Nicholas makes a wheel towards the door, but advancing through is a small army of soldiers. All bearing unknown weapons. In march row upon row of soldiers. Their green suits helmets, hiding their faces. A group of them surround the crates and take the box, heading towards the other side of the market. Conn shouts over the sirens.
"They have reinforcements! There are two cargo trucks pulling up loaded with soldiers."
The soldiers begin to fire at the crates we are hiding behind. Some kind of energy shot whizes over my right shoulder. 
 I look at my fellow agents, all are ready for battle. 
Stepping out from behind our cover, Bea let's out a loud roar and shifts into a T-Rex, beginning to level the playing field.
"That's it, now you've made her mad." I tell the soldier that just crept up behind Nicholas. With an iron fist I send him back to his little buddies. "Anyone else for tea?" A group of soldiers sneak from the left. Nicholas's wheelchair fires left at the soldiers trying to stun them. 
Honey's face turns red, she swells with anger, in fact I can't tell if it is her powers or her anger that turned her red. Either way, I will be calling her Ms. Tomato head for a while. 
Quickly she summons fireballs towards the ever advancing mob. Looking over from the guy I just hammered I see Bea. She tears off the arm of one of the soldiers and tosses it aside. It begins to pop and shoot electrical sparks. They are just robots. I realize. 
"Hey they're just robots!" I yell, using double the force and smashing a robot into the ground. Gotta love my power glove. 
Conn's shield takes the head off of one. Blood spills everywhere and a withered green head rolls across the ground.
"Not this one. This one is some sort of zombie thing!" Conn throws his shield at the approaching mob, taking out a few robots trying to set explosive charges.
"Guys, I hate to tell you this" begins Nicholas backing up to Conn. 
"But I think Minecraft just came to life!" He pops off another Zombie's head.
"Bea can you find that box? Nicholas and I are a bit busy, and my power blasters are getting low. Yes Conn, I did forget to charge them." I hear Conn in my comms from across the warehouse. "How convenient for you to remind me." 
Bea's roars turn into cries as she transforms into a hawk. She flies off looking for the box while Conn and I are slaying the oncoming attackers left and right. 
"How do you think they knew about our party? I didn't send them an invitation!" My jest is lost in the chaos of the fight. 
Two robots to the left  a mob of zombies to the right. 
"Tony about time to use those missiles isn't it?" Conn throws a punch at an incoming robot. The floor is now littered with bodies. I blast a path through the army to see how much further we have to go. 
"Ok, get down." I order. My teammates duck as six missiles launch from my glove. WHAM!  They hit six large squads of soldiers. That severely leveled the playing field. 
"Tony, I've found the box! They're moving it out to the cargo truck! You need to hurry!" scretches Bea over the comms. 
"On my way!"
Conn assures me that him and Honey can hold them off until we get back. Nicholas hits a button of his wheelchair and speeds ahead of me to clear a path. 
Conn's voice comes across the comms. 
"Hey Tony?"
"Yeah?"
"Well we took down all of them, but, he-he" he laughs. "The cavalry arrived. I think someone's watching the fight and sending in reinforcements in live time. For every one we take down two more are sent in. After we clear up here well just head over….." he sarcastically says over the comms.
"Grrrrr Aaaaaahhhhhh" suddenly,  Conn's mic goes dead. I begin to think of the cave troll coming through the door. That wouldn't even surprise me at this point.
"Uh Tony, scratch that, I'm fine. Honey just took care of that, surprisingly. Over and out." The comm cuts off.

Hindi ko maiwasang ma-curious sa kung ano nga ba ang iniisip ng mga babae kapag nakakakita sila ng lalaking nagbabasa ng romance fiction, chicklit novel, o iba pang libro na karaniwang binabasa ng mga babae.

Iniisip kaya nilang bading ako? 

Hindi naman siguro. Wala naman talaga kasing pinipilang gender ang romance fictions at kung ano pang genre ng isang akda 'di ba?

Kinikilig kaya sila?

May nabasa kasi ako minsan sa isang blog:

Marami kasing nahirapan sa malupit na exam ni Ms. Rodrin sa Literature. 'Di kapani-paniwala. Pero totoo . . . isa na ko sa mga bumagsak. Para makabawi, gumawa na lang daw kami ng book review. 

Pinapili ni Ms. Rodrin ang klase kung sinong author ang gusto namin. Ang mga kaklase ko gusto pa atang utakan si Ms. Rodrin, si Nicholas Sparks daw ang paborito nila; rinig na rinig naman ang bulungan nila na kaya si Sparks ang gusto nila e kasi may movies na yung mga book niya. Panonoorin na lang daw nila. Natawa na lang ako nang pumayag si Ms. Rodrin kasi ang pinili niyang book e yung wala pang movie version.

Ang totoo, pwede ko namang i-google na lang ang review ng book na 'to pero no'ng napadaan ako kanina sa bookstore, ewan ko ba, bigla lang ako na-curious basahin.

Tiningnan ko ulit ang dalawang babae sa kabilang table. Ngumiti ako sa kanila (Landi!) Walang sparks, pero parang kinilig sila. Narinig ko pa nga sabi ng isa na ang gwapo ko. Nyay, walang gano'n!

Hinigop ko na ang natitirang kape sa tasa, tumayo at lumabas na ng coffee shop. 

Wooo, ang  lamig ng gabi.

Pagdating ko sa tawiran, naabutan ako ng stop ng traffic lights. Ninety seconds. Ang tagal. 

Nakatitig lang ako sa traffic lights at sinasabayan ang bilang ng electronic counter nang mula sa likod ay may yumakap sa akin. 

"Mahal kita. Nakakainis ka," bulong niya. 

Babae siya, tingin ko base sa boses niya. Tingin ko lasing 'to. Boses lasing e.

Nang tatanggalin ko na sana ang pagkakayakap niya, siya na mismo ang unti-unting humiwalay sa'kin.

"Nakakainis ka," muli niyang sabi.

Humarap ako sa kanya na kaagad kong pinagsisihan. Bigla niya kong sinuntok. 'Di naman masyadong malakas kasi lasing nga siya, pero masakit pa rin.

Napahawak ako sa pisngi ko. First time kong masapak ng lasing.

Nagkatitigan kami. Siyempre kumunot ang noo ko sa kanya para ipakitang inis ako sa ginawa niya, kaya lang bigla niyang inalis ang kaniyang tingin. 

Nagsimula siyang maglakad. Nakatawid siya sa unang lane ng kalsada kahit pagewang-gewang, wala namang gaanong sasakyan sa lane na 'yun. Huminto siya sa gitna. Mas malapad na ang kalsada sa kabilang lane. Mas marami na rin ang mga sasakyang mabilis na dumaraan. Nagsimula siyang humakbang . . . 

Ano! Loko 'to, tatawid e naka-go pa rin yung mga sasakyan. 

Tatlong segundo rin akong napanganga habang nakatanaw sa kaniya—tatlong segundong nabawas sa counter ng traffic signal lights. 

Thirty seconds pa ang natitira bago magpalit sa green. Sa bilis ng mga sasakyan, malabong hindi siya mapuruhan kong masagasaan man siya. 

Ramdam ko ang pagbilis ng tibok ng puso ko. Tumakbo ako tungo sa kaniya at dali-dali kong hinatak ang braso niya palapit sa akin.

Tumama ang mukha niya sa dibdib ko. For the second time, nayakap niya ulit ako. Nakaka-ilan na sa'kin 'to ha.

Bahagya niya akong naitulak nang bumusina ang isang kotseng dumaan sa gilid namin. Na-weirdo-han siguro sa'min ang driver. Baka first time niyang makakita nang nagyayakapan sa gitna ng kalsada. Tumawa ako nang mahina. Parang pampelikula ang eksena namin ngayon.

"Bitawan mo ko, manyak ka!" sigaw niya.

Ibinaba ko ang tingin sa braso niya at kaagad na tinanggal ang pagkakahawak ko.

"Miss, hindi ako manyak. Ayan, stop na ang mga sasakyan. Makakatawid ka na."

"Ayaw ko." 

E may saltik naman pala talaga 'to e.

"O, sige ma-una na ko sa'yong tumawid." Tinalikuran ko siya at nagsimula nang maglakad. Sumunod naman siya sa likuran ko.

Pagkatawid, kumaliwa ako habang sa kabilang direksiyon naman siya pumunta. Lumnigon ako para  tanawin siya. Gano'n pa rin siya maglakad—parang tutumba. Muntik pa ngang siyang tumumba, nagawa niya lang na makahawak sa isang poste. 

Haist. Parang 'di ko siya kayang iwan na lang. 

Naglakad ako palapit sa kaniya. Hinawakan ko ang kamay niya at hinila ko siya pabalik sa coffee shop.

Pina-upo ko siya sa parehong pwesto ko kanina. Um-order ako ng cafe americano para sa kanya.

"O kape nang mahimasmasan ka naman kahit na konti."

Tinanggap niya naman ito. Umupo na rin ako. Magkaharap kami. Napangiti ako habang pinagmamasdan siya na dahan-dahang hinihigop ang kape. 

Walang nagsasalita sa amin. Tahimik. Naisipan kong kuhain sa bag ko ang binabasa kong libro kanina.

Napatingin ako sa orasan sa may dingding—8:47. Kailangan ko na talagang umuwi dahil may exam pa ko bukas.

"Wala bang pwedeng sumundo sa'yo rito? Kailangan ko na kasing umuwi e," tanong ko, tumayo ako.

Tingin ko medyo okay na siya. Ume-epekto na rin ang kape, nahimas-masan na siya kahit papaano.

"Sige, una na ko," pagpapaalam ko, pagkatapos, naglakad na ko palabas ng pinto.

Sa labas nakita ko siya mula sa glass panels ng coffee shop na kumakaway. Nakatingin siya sa'kin. Nabasa ko ang binibigkas ng bibig niya—Thank you—sabay ngiti.

Kumaway rin ako pabalik at tinanguan siya.

Dumiretso na ko sa paglakad at muling tumawid ng kalsada. Napadaan ako sa isang convenience store kung saan naaninagan ko ang sarili mula sa salaming pader . . . kanina pa pala ako nakangiti.

The children absolutely loved the playground, and Hope promised them they could have an extra few minutes to play after lunch if they did well on their assignments that morning. After school, those who walked home went back outside to play for quite some time before they scurried to their houses, liable to be in trouble for being late. "I'm not quite sure," Hope admitted, "but I have a feeling most of it was constructed off-site."
"It sure is a marvel. I bet the kids like it. I've heard of a few places like this back East, but I ain't never heard of anyone buildin' something for youngsters in a place like this" 
"They do like it." Hope realized she was ahead of her time—that most teachers didn't realize how important play was for the children, but her school in Lamar had had a rope swing and a four-square box painted on the walkway, and the children loved it. That was nothing compared to this, she realized, but she thought it would make an impact on their ability to learn. Hope gave Nicholas a half-smile, waiting for the next question, assuming she'd have to figure out a way to answer truthfully without having a lot of explaining to do.
"Who do you think is responsible?"
There it was. "I'm not exactly sure. I've been saying that the children needed more play equipment since I arrived. I guess one of the parents finally took it to heart." She pressed her lips together and hoped that would be enough.
Nicholas looked around at the play equipment one more time before he asked, "Whatcha got there?"
Trying to pretend as if she didn't know what he was referring to, Hope looked at the objects in her hands before saying, "Oh, one of the students brought me a gift."
"Which one?" 
"One of the girls. It was a nice gesture. Now, if you're ready, Mr. Howard, I would appreciate a lift to your folks' house, assuming that's why you've come." She kept her smile pleasant, praying he'd let it go, but he still looked suspicious.
Nicholas nodded and she followed him to the wagon. She set the hatbox inside in order to climb up, and Nicholas helped her by lifting her at the waist, though she really didn't need it. When he went around and climbed up in the seat, he was still eyeing the box. "What's it look like?"
Hope let out a long breath. "It's sort of fancy," she replied, waving her hand. "I can't even imagine where I'd wear it."
"A fancy hat? From one of our children? Where would they have gotten the money for that?"
"I honestly don't know. Maybe it belonged to her mother."
Doc didn't seem to buy that either, but he turned the horses around and headed toward the road without further comment, and Hope prayed that the uncomfortable situation was over.
But it wasn't. About halfway to his parents' house, Nicholas cleared his throat. "Did you know there's a school board election coming up this fall? Mr. Stewart is up for re-election, and I've heard that Mr. Canton is considering running against him. I considered throwing my own name in the hat." He looked down at the box. "But I wasn't sure what you'd think about that."
Hope was confused at first. While it seemed like a wonderful idea to have someone like Mr. Canton who genuinely seemed to care about the students as the school board president, she had no idea why Nicholas might think she'd have an opinion as to whether or not he decided to run. "What do you mean?"
"I mean… if I were to run, of course, I'd want to help you in any way I could, but mostly, I'd just want to make sure there were some changes to your contract." His face was turning a bright red, and Hope had a feeling it had nothing to do with the May afternoon sun.
"What sort of changes?" she asked, a lump forming in her throat. She wasn't sure she wanted to hear the answer.
Nicholas took a deep breath. "I just think… maybe you should be allowed to court, that's all. There are plenty of bachelors in town who would agree with me. I could run on that platform alone and be sure to win the election." He chuckled nervously, and suddenly, Hope understood what he was getting at. She had to avert her eyes.
Over the last couple of months, she'd spent a lot of time getting to know the doctor and was very fond of him. He was intelligent and kind, and he wasn't at all unpleasant to look at. But now that she'd had a feeling of what true sparks felt like, now that she'd had a bit more experience with longing and sleepless nights, she was sure that Nicholas Howard was not the man she'd want to be with, even if someone did come along and change her contract. And since the only man she'd even considered had been pretty clear on the fact that he wasn't taking another wife, the contract was actually her saving grace at the moment. The way Nicholas described it, the second the document was amended, she'd have gentlemen callers lined up from here to the Mexican border. 
Undeterred by her expression, he continued. "Anyhow, Miss Tucker, I just think… well, I mean… you're a beautiful, intelligent gal, and it'd be a shame if you weren't allowed to court anybody just on the account of your teaching contract. My understanding is that a lot of school districts are doing away with them sorta rules."
Hope cleared her throat, glad he had yet to make it too personal. He hadn't declared his love for her or said he was hoping to court her himself, not yet anyhow. "While I do think any steps toward giving women more rights are positive, Doc, I'm not sure how I feel about amending my contract. Being so new to the area, I haven't had the opportunity to meet many men, except for my students' fathers, and I'm sort of happy for it since it has allowed me to focus on my students." She hoped he'd understand what she was getting at without her having to say more.
Nicholas looked a little hurt. "But you've gotten to know me."
"Yes, and I'm very happy to have you as such a good friend." She turned to look at him then, praying that she hadn't hurt his feelings, but she saw his expression shift and realized he was intelligent enough to put the pieces of the puzzle together. 
"I see," Doc said, turning the horse so that the wagon was headed up his parents' street. He didn't say anything else, and Hope felt awful. He'd done so much to help her, and he really was a wonderful person. It was just too bad the tingles she'd initially felt when she'd been around him had been snuffed out, replaced by something so powerfully strong she couldn't even contain it, let alone pretend to understand it.
When he pulled the wagon to a stop, Hope quickly thanked him and then jumped down before he even had a chance to come around to help. She pulled her belongings along with her and rushed up the front steps.
