Those USB drives would act like temporary storage rings allowing them to put the items that they wanted to buy into it since most items were enchanted with anti-storage ring to prevent looting and theft from happening.
Either that or they could personally hand carry them on the carts provided. However, the technological advancement in recent years had made online supermarkets extremely popular, and the Offshore Sea Store was no exception in participating them.
With the help of the System, Jin had assisted Lai Fu in creating an online mart on the Pandamonium App as well as applying to the famous supermarket delivery services apps. As Lai Fu previously subscribed to be one of the sellers in those apps as well, the System merely aided him by instantly updating the items that were left in his store to those apps. In fact, every purchase in the Tiangong Tree Mall would allow them to earn Panda Medals which could indirectly be used to either obtain items in Jin's store or used as the premium currency for his mini games and dungeons.
During his downtime from the day before, Jin had planned a road map to revamp the usage of Panda Medals. The same was true for Lai Fu's Instance Store. The current Day One discount was the biggest discount he had ever offered. By buying five items, one of the five cheapest items would be discounted at 99% (up to a certain price point of 100 Yuan). Hence, many people took the chance to buy the more expensive stuff all at once, mainly comprising the premium food stock from Jin's Agriculture Sector.
Even Lai Fu was shocked at how fast Jin's food stock vanished, and when he queried some of his long time customers, their reasoning made perfect sense. "There was no scent of pesticide used on these at all! The colour of the vegetables is very prominent too! It has been so many years since I saw this kind of naturally grown fruits and vegetables." the collective opinions of his customers who were equally health conscious in their advanced age answered him. (Things which Lai Fu already know when he personally examined the goods too, but verification from his peers sealed the deal for him even further.)
"Do you know that considering the quality of the products, the price you place on it is freaking cheap? Of course, I will get a bulk of them before it gets all sold out!" His customers said frantically and went to the payment cashiers where a team of Deep Ones were manning the cashier booth.
One scanned the items, the other two packed them up before the customer could choose between delivery to their house or self carry. Most were okay with carrying thanks to the power of the storage ring, but some did choose the delivery option, taking advantage of the Day One discounts to buy for their relatives too.
As Lai Fu began developing a friendly relationship with the Deep Ones, he even requested more of them via the Pandamonium App while they were still free. (He still would be charged according to their numbers starting next month). Sure, he still had some of his old employees, but many quit after the incident, with only a few loyal enough to remain behind.
Thus, Lai Fu ended up deploying them for all kinds of jobs. The owner used them for cashier services restocking the items and currently (maybe most importantly) for crowd control. Lai Fu believed that they were the ideal monster NPCs which were fierce enough to go against the crowd.
There were instances where those greedy uncles and aunties were tempted to take fresh stock from their hands, (mainly because of the discounts Lai Fu had provided) which caused the Deep Ones shouted at them and even scratched them superficially as a warning.
The customers in return demanded for compensation, but before Lai Fu could intervene in any way, the Deep Ones officially issued a duel challenges to settle the store. Should they accept and win the duel, they would get their compensation, fair and square along with an apology.
The ignorant older cultivators thought this was a simple fight and part of Lai Fu's new instance, so they fought against them recklessly. (The only ones who had the last laugh were the cultivators that had experienced Jin's stores and knew what capabilities these fishes had.
…So far, none had won against the mighty Deep Ones and the customers learnt the lesson not to disturb the Deep Ones during their restocking. What followed was an extremely ridiculous sight to behold. Lai Fu had never thought it possible to witness customers standing at the side, mere inches away from a Deep One, patiently waiting for him to finish restocking the items before pouncing on the goods and merchandise.
"Each Yuan for these angry fish is worth it." Lai Fu chuckled to himself as he sat at the side of the recently arrived Discount Pirate Ship and enjoyed some fishing.

Arriving at the lecture hall, he doesn't see Jake so he sits down at the back of the lecture hall.

15 minutes pass by and Jake still hasn't entered despite being over 10 minutes into the lecture.

Soon it is the end of the lecture and he hasn't seen Jake, left with nothing to do, Ronan walks back towards his dorm, somewhat panicking, using all that time to finish the textbooks would be a waste if he can't collect the money.

After arriving at his dorm the first thing he does is text Jake and wait for a response, whilst waiting he starts fixing more bugs on his app.

'Turns out there's a lot more to do with this app than what I planned, then again I was a newbie starting a fairly big project but the only reason it has taken off was mainly from Jake, it seems like he had managed to spread it pretty far and wide.' Ronan was thinking of the many reasons why his app was taking all his time.

1 hour later and Jake still hadn't gotten back to him, so he called.

"Hey Jake, so you ill or something?" Ronan got through to Jake when he called.

"No, something just came up, I'll be busy for a couple of days, a week at most, if you want to hand in those textbooks you can either wait or give them to one of my 'minions', they'll be in a lecture in 2 days with the money." Jake replied with a somewhat tired voice.

"I'll wait, my apps taking up 3/4 of my time anyway and I can use these days to rest and focus on my app." Ronan said, whilst opening up his statistics on his laptop.

"Oh, I forgot to thank you for telling your friend about it, it became somewhat popular so now I have to do all kinds of bug fixes and look for various advertising platforms. I'll be getting my first paycheck from it as well in a couple of days." Ronan carried on, spilling everything to Jake as if they were part of the same family.

"That's good, you still want the textbooks to fill out? If the apps taking up most of your time maybe you want to stop with the textbooks, especially if you can make more money from the app." Jake started the sentence tired but ended almost exhausted.

"You sound tired, anyway I'll think about it and get back to you later, go sleep or something, it's not good for your health." Ronan replied while thinking 'Damnit, now I'm starting to sound like the system, at least I didn't make him run for 2 hours a day, that'd be killer.'

After hanging up Ronan looked at his statistics, just over 55k now, over 5k in 1 day, but compared to previous days it's starting to die down, with the advertisements maybe it'll get a new boost of people.

Ronan went to sleep thinking about his various plans on how to improve his app.

Ronan woke up to his alarm, he had set one the previous day because he was feeling more and more tired, getting up at the same time to run and use all his energy on coursework and his app, then he would have to find more time to complete the textbooks for various people for money. All in all, it was extremely tiring for Ronan.

'At some point, I'm going to have to create a schedule for my day, not just for running.' Ronan thought whilst getting ready to run again.

After running Ronan checked his stats and went back to a day of grinding the bugs down in his app and soon the day was over.

The next day Ronan woke up from his alarm, he was going to a lecture today to hand in the textbooks so he doesn't forget in the future, it was also the day he was getting paid, it was supposed to be tomorrow, but its the weekend so as the last day of the workweek, so he gets paid a day early.

After the lecture was done, he took a look at his Riverwood account, the money wasn't directly put into his bank account, but it could be set up that way, as Riverwood had many different products and services for sale you could get a discount if you use money inside your Riverwood account and the main reason why he kept the money inside the Riverwood account was due to this, you could withdraw money, but not deposit money into your account.

It was only $1747 but it was still a large amount, but considering that he doesn't get that amount, he has to take off the $262 that he pays the Agency, in total he gets $1485, which is still a large amount of money and because he paid for the majority of his apps features (Advertising on other websites, servers, Riverwood, etc.), he doesn't have to exchange it unlike the money from his textbooks, so he can buy a prosperity point with it, but it was not recommended so as he would have next to nothing left if he did, making it harder for him to gain more money in the future, especially if the app flops and he only manages to make 1 month worth of money out of it, despite it being in its infant stage and it only being available for around a week.

Ronan spends the next few hours looking at the various products and services he can buy at Riverwood, he buys some essential items such as DDoS protection so they can't target his servers, setting that up only took several minutes as both Riverwood and the company he was renting services from we're part of the same business group and they have worked together hundreds of times.

Ronan Atkins is a 20-year-old student, he studies Business Administration at Trinity College, it is considered as one of the best colleges to learn Business Administration in the world and in order to obtain a scholarship Ronan had to pass many tests, most of which have nothing to do with the actual course he was studying in, after passing all those tests he was finally given the scholarship he dreamed off, but even after getting the scholarship his life was hard, he had to work several jobs in order to pay for food and accommodation.

The next day Michael headed into his office and was surprised to see all the employees gathered together. 

" What is going on?" He asked.

" Look, the game has been exploding since yesterday." Arjun turned around and pointed at a screen. 

Michael noticed that the game was currently rank 94 in Google play store and 92 in the Apple store. For an app to break into the top 100 within one day was an astonishing achievement. He noticed that there were already youtube videos of the game. One of them was a famous YouTuber who was probably hired by the marketing agency. 

The first episode of the lets play series already had 30 million views. The comments were supportive and the game was appraised as the game of the year. The download count was already at 25 million. 

"Well, that is good news. Hopefully, we are just getting started." Michael commented and walked away. 

Arjun was flabbergasted by Michael's response. Michael did not even seem excited by the game's performance. Just what sort of company did he join? How high was Michael aiming?

When Michael sat down in his office. He finally let loose and breathed out. It was not easy to make a successful game. The competition was tough and most of the top rankers were supported by mega-corporations. 

Occasionally some indie developer will have high rankings and it would be a popular story. The reason why it would gather attention was because it was a rare incident. Long gone was the time that the top apps were created by hard work and creativity. All the current apps were dragged to the top by marketing and massive developer teams. 

Even if he had the system, Michael was nervous when he released the game. However, the results gave him confidence. Furthermore, He knew that he needed to build more games. Capos was an adult game centered around crime so it had a limited market. He needed to design more games to reach a wider audience. 

Michael had plans to move on to console games; he wanted to dominate both markets. In reality other than gaming and trading stocks he did not have any other business idea. Eventually, he would expand into other industries but gaming will always be his cornerstone. 

First, he needed to figure out how to monetize Capos. Right now the game was completely free and had no purchases. He wanted to make sure the game was popular before adding in-app purchases. After brainstorming, he decided to add diamonds as a premium currency in the game. Michael wanted to add premium accounts with faster leveling and more loot from missions. 

Michael felt like premium accounts were a reasonable way for developers to generate revenue while keeping players happy. The casual players can just play free and have access to the whole game. While the hardcore players can use premium mode to cut back on the grinding. 

It did not take long to add the diamonds to the game with the help of the designer. The diamonds could be redeemed for one month of premium rank for player accounts. They can also be sold and exchanged by players in the game. Michael set the price for diamonds at five dollars. He felt like five dollars a month was a fair price for such a revolutionary game. 

Michael called Arjun over. Arjun was the team lead and had the most experience working for gaming companies out of all his employees. He explained the diamonds and their uses. 

" Hmm… The base idea is very good. However, if you let players freely exchange the diamonds then you will have real money trading problems. Basically, some players will try to set up farming groups and will sell the diamonds on the black market for cheaper prices." Arjun warned Michael. If they set up direct monthly billing for premium accounts then this would not be an issue. However, if a commodity was used for premium services then farming groups will eat away the company's profits. 

Michael did not consider that problem at all. In hindsight, he knew about the existence of Chinese farming clans that sell in-game currency on grey markets. Unfortunately, he could not come up with a quick solution. He instructed Arjun to update the game anyway; hopefully, his game would not attract the large farming groups.

A week later

Michael was sitting in the cafeteria eating lunch with a smile on his face. The reason he was smiling was that all the college students around him were playing Capos. He did not know what the latest rank was but he knew that the game definitely broke some records.

" Dude have you checked out Capos?" Peter asked him. Everybody was playing Capos now. Well everybody that met the age requirements at least. Even though the game was based on illegal activities; the unbelievable graphics, the enticing plot and the innovate game mechanics had won the hearts of all the gamers. 

"No, I don't have an account yet." Michael replied. He wasn't lying, although he used an admin account for testing the game. He did not have a personal account yet.

" Dude your missing out man. I heard they are making a student Capos club; We should go check it out. This game is the future, the early players will have an advantage so don't wait too long to start or you will regret it." Peter explained. 

Michael smiled and did not respond. It felt wonderful to have someone worship his creation like this. He quickly finished lunch and headed home. After the first day, he did not check the rank again because he wanted a surprise. It was time to find out the end results. 

As soon as Michael reached his house he immediately bolted to his room and pulled up the ranks. Capos was ranked 14th place in both Google and Apple play stores. He had expected more; however, 14 was a high rank considering that the game had a limited audience. Not to mention, the game was number one in the weekly list. He immediately checked the mission details.

Michael was curious about the reward given by the system. He noticed that an update was ready for the software and immediately downloaded it. He opened the game engine and checked out the updates. 

There was a new library with billions of models, music and everything else needed to build a game. He already had several new ideas pop up in his head just by looking at some of the 3D models. It was going to be a lot easier to build games in the future and it would save him a lot of time. 

After getting familiar with the library, Michael decided to go to his office. He had scheduled a meeting with Eminence gaming executives. Even though he knew what the app download rank was; The most important figure was the sales of Diamonds. After all, if the app could not make money then it would be useless to him.

Michael was just an ordinary boy living in modern-day America. He grew up in an orphanage with a bleak future. One day he acquired a mysterious package only to inherit a system. "Ma I can work at the restaurant at night after I get out of the office." 

           Daniel listened to his mother ramble on about how she was scared the restaurant would go under because she hurt herself and couldn't work as much as she wanted. Daniel sighed and rubbed his hand across his face and just continued to listen to his mother ramble on about how his father was to busy with work. And, he was to busy traveling for work to help her and what was she going to do? Daniel scooped a lock of hair out of his face, he thought once again about cutting it off. But, then he remembered her playing with it and how she loved it when he was growing it out, so he always changed his mind. 

       His mother screeching brought him back to the present. She went on some more about how the restaurant was her dream not his fathers and his father just let her do it to indulge her, but she wished that he would help her out more. But, his father wouldn't do anything to help her and said that this was just her hobby especially since Daniel was grown and working. Daniels father felt that his wife should stay at home and be a housewife.

       Daniel and his family had moved to New York right after he had graduated high school because his dad's company had given him another big promotion. Daniel hadn't wanted to leave California and his friends, but he had convinced himself that they would all be going to separate colleges and we're going to probably lose touch anyway. Plus, his dad had convinced him that he was needed to help his mother and he could save money by going to an in-state college and stay at home

 "Ma, I have to get back to work this company isn't going to run itself." 

 Lu Yi could only stand by and squeeze his hands and listen to the bosses mother yelling about something. Daniel looked up and covered the phone. "Go get lunch while I finish up with my mother." Lu Yi nodded and was eager to rush out. Daniel went back to listen to his mother complained.  But, this time about Daniel not eating enough and being too skinny. Then she started bugging him about needing a wife so that she could have grandchildren before she died. His mother was sixty she wasn't dying anytime soon, which prompted his mother into another rampage about him getting a wife and grandchildren before she was too old to play with them. After about twenty minutes of that, Daniel finally hung up the phone and turned back to his computer. 

A message popped up on his computer from Facebook and then Instagram. Daniel pulled up Facebook first. It was a picture of his friend Allison smiling eating ice cream with her son. They were smiling joyously at the camera with ice cream all over their faces. He missed Allison, out of all his high school friends, she was who he missed the most.

 Daniel remembered when they first met in high school. It was their sophomore year. Daniel's father had moved the family from China to San Diego because he received a promotion and his dad's company wanted to open an international division. So, here he is the skinny, pimply face, glasses wearing new kid in a new school, whose English wasn't that good. He had learned English before moving here to the U.S. but he still wasn't that good, therefore he was the awkward kid in the school. 

Halfway through the year, some guys had started bulling him and even though he fought back. One day they all jumped him and there were too many of them and he caught a serious beating. Then Allison runs up like a beautiful warrior woman, pepper spraying the guys and calling the school security guards. She stayed with him the whole time he was in the infirmary and talked to him about any and everything to keep his mind off the pain. He thought she was an amazing black angel, she had this beautiful caramel colored skin, big expressive brown eyes, her hair was in long pretty braids, and she had curves everywhere.

They soon became fast friends. Allison was sort of an outcast herself being only one of twenty black kids in the whole school of two thousand kids. She was lively and happy but didn't really fit into the I want to be the next best rapper scene like some of the black kids in school. Or the I am only into white guys/girls like my friends are scene. So, she stayed to herself most of the time or hung out with maybe three other friends. A white girl named Ann, a white guy named Keith, who was also Ann's boyfriend, and another Black girl named Rasheera and now him.

 Unbeknownst to Allison, Daniel started having a slight crush on her from the day she saved him.  Not just because she saved him, but also because she was beautiful. She had the most amazing personality, beautiful skin that was soft to the touch, and an awesome body that he craved to hold. It always amazed him the contrast between them. She was soft, lush, and curvy where he was skinny, wiry, and imply faced, glasses wearing teenager. Not now, now he was cut up from working out every day, the pimples had long cleared up, and the glasses had given way to contacts.

He wondered what Allison would think of him now, God he missed her so much, they became best friends after his incident and he would sit with her and her small group of friends, eventually becoming one of them. They would all go out together, eat lunch together, bought each other gifts, and talked or texted every day. Daniel didn't know how he would have gotten through high school without Allison and the others. They made him laugh when he wanted to cry, Allison would study with him when his mom and dad yelled at him about his grades. 

They kept the bullies away from him, mostly because Keith was on the football team and he was huge. So, no one wanted to mess with Daniel and possibly upset Allison, which would upset Ann, which would then, in turn, upset Keith. Who had no qualms about beating any and everyone up who upset Ann. He truly missed them, but it was his dad's fault that he couldn't stay with his friends. At the time Daniel hated his dad for it, but now as an adult, he understood, his dad at the time wanted the best for his family. 

But, throughout his whole high school experience his dad kept moving up the corporate ladder and finally, towards the beginning of his senior year, his dad received a promotion that moved them from San Diego to Los Angeles. 

 It was heartbreaking to leave Allison, but he was okay because it was only a two-hour difference so they started visiting each other on the weekends. They would alternate weekends, and it surprised him how he could wait a whole week. But, he was willing as long as he knew he was going to get to see Allison. Then at the end of his senior year, his dad received yet another promotion that moved them to New York. Daniel had never seen Allison cry as much as she did that day when he went to visit her and told her that his family was moving to the east coast. 

Now, eight years later he was still in New York running his own tech company that he built from the ground up in college. His company Blue Phoenix mostly specialized in apps that helped streamline your business, but those weren't the only apps they created. They also created gaming apps and apps for special needs kids. But his most popular app and the one that made him famous was the app that stopped you from drunk texting people. 

He noticed a lot of his college friends would get wasted at parties and wind up texting crazy stuff to their friends and family. One of his friends actually sent a dick picture to his mom and asked her out, he was so wasted. She cursed him out when he was sober then laughed and smiled that he felt she was still attractive even though she was old. From that day forward, Daniel created the app named Don't Text Drunk or Trunk as some people called it a shortened smashed together version of text and drunk.

 It garnered him a whole lot of acclaim and business, and he just hit the ground running from there. He had wanted to share it with Allison, but he hadn't really spoken to her in the eight years he had been in New York. At first when he moved they had text and called every day, but then as time went on and they both went on with their lives the calls became less and less. The text became shorter and shorter until they were almost nonexistent. Then four years ago right after she had graduated from college. He found out on social media that she had gotten married and shortly after had a son.
 It had broken his heart because he had wanted to be that husband and father to her. 

But, he never told her how he felt about her, scared she would reject his feelings and it would make their friendship awkward. He valued their friendship more than anything else, so he kept it to himself and tried not to get jealous when she got excited about a guy asking her out. Or tried not to kill the guy when he eventually broke her heart and left her crying on Daniel's shoulder. But, somehow he made it through especially knowing that those relationships would always be short lived. 

But, when he found out that she was married, it broke his heart into a million pieces, she wouldn't come crying on his shoulder this time. It wasn't like he could be upset about it. They hadn't talked in almost eight years, an occasional hello and happy birthday, holiday, etc… on social media but nothing more.

 He didn't know much of her life and she didn't know much of his. He didn't even know if she knew that he was the one who created most of the apps that she used on her phone every day. He didn't know if she had ever become the ambassador for international women's rights liked she'd dreamed of becoming. There wasn't much on Facebook about her life, just pictures of her son. 

A few pictures here and there of her husband, but not even a lot of those, and even less on Instagram. He wanted to know about her now and what she was up to. He thought about reaching out so many times. But, always stopped himself because the distance was so great. Not just in miles, but the distance from what they had been to what they were now. Daniel shut down his social media pages and went back to concentrating on work. These applications wouldn't write themselves.

Who would have ever thought that an Asian man and a Black woman could ever fall in love.

Cyberspace was a world of wonders to my eyes. It was a place where everyone could be anything they wanted to be with just a simple cord attacked to the jack that connected each person into it. All it took was a single cable or wireless jack and our minds were inside cyberspace. Most people knew Public//NET. Public//NET was the public series of networks and servers known to the common user. They were usually packed with ordinary people who wanted to escape reality without the dangers of BTL labs and their inherent risk of brain damage. If the average wage slave wanted to cheat on his wife, Public//NET's LovR app was the first place he would look for possible partners. LovR was a virtual dating app made for avatars to mingle and date each other in hopes of finding love in the real world, but most people just used the app for virtual hookups. If a group of social outcasts wanted to escape from a world where they were weak and helpless to a world where they could become heroes of some fictional world, they would either be playing the Legends of Corel'Thas or Hero Universe apps. In some cases, dividing their time between both. LoCT was a popular fantasy game. Think swords and sorcery with cyberbrain controls and you've got the right idea. Hero Universe was pretty much the same crap except with superheroes set in the early 21st century. But people like me didn't play the apps on Public//NET the way the developers intended.


Instead, we roamed Shadow//NET where we fought, hacked, and stole to prove we were the best deckers in all of cyberspace. Usually, we would hack servers for data we could sell for credits. But sometimes, two or more deckers would have beefs with each other. Sometimes, even Shadow//NET would be shaken to its foundations. But there was a cabal of deckers who basically kept the chaos of the networks organized. If Public//NET was a downtown area, Shadow//NET was the underbelly. I usually came here to test my skills against other up and coming deckers to see who could copy data from the public servers and transfer the payloads first. However, this afternoon, I was after something more valuable than simple transaction histories and VR logs. I was after secure information on Libra Industries delivery schedules and personnel files.


My handle was Merle_Byrne#7805, but those who knew me gave me the nickname 'Birdie' because my avatar was an actual recreation of a raven. Just an ordinary, inconspicuous raven. Some people liked to use animal avatars and I was no exception. I simply chose this avatar because it was smaller and harder to spot than most others. But this fateful afternoon would prove most disturbing for me.


"Step into my parlor, said the spider to the birdie," A female voice called out to me. "Or as your friends call you in meatspace... Yata."


It was unsettling how she knew my real world name. So unsettling that I couldn't say a word, so I simply turned around to see her avatar. It was a spider that was roughly the size of a human coated in black hairs with a white design on the back sac. It was none other than the famous decker known as Arachne. She had a reputation for getting even the most guarded information with relative ease, and her black widow avatar would often be the last thing an enemy of hers would see in cyberspace. Some rumors say her cyberdeck loadout had repurposed ICE programs that killed other deckers. Others say she simply figured out a way to permanently lock a user from ever returning. I believed she simply DOXed her rivals to local corp sec with the data she controlled. But what worried me most was the fact that I was in her sights. And when most deckers saw Arachne, it was too late for them. I tried desperately to load my emergency exit program in hopes of getting away from her, only to see that it was locked, much to my dismay.


"Don't run away, little birdie," She said in a mocking voice. "I'm simply here to make a deal with you."

"To what do I owe the pleasure of your presence?" I asked. "Clearly I must've pissed off someone powerful enough to warrant you showing up."

"It's not who you have pissed off in the past that got my attention, Birdie," She replied. "It's who you are going to piss off that caught my eye."


Arachne crawled sideways twice. Her arachnid mandibles looked like they were ready to snack on prey, and her eyes seemed focus on making my avatar the next meal of hers. The most shocking part is that the line between Mr Johnsons and our team's briefing room was designed to be secure. Maybe this was a sign that we needed to destroy the table and buy a new one. And perhaps move our hideout to a different location as well. I knew plenty about cyber security, but even a tech illiterate plebeian like Quince could figure out that we were compromised on Mr Johnson's end.


"I already know about the package your team was hired to intercept last night," She continued, her mandibles tapping together in a seemingly sadistic delight. "Your client really wants that package. But he cannot have what he doesn't deserve. I will tell you what that package is as long as you promise me two things, Birdie."
 

"And what exactly are these two things?" I asked


"First, you must speak of our conversation to no one. Not even Mr Hatchet. If I have even the slightest clue that you tipped off the rest of your team, I will personally make sure to hinder this mission. And by hinder, I mean outright prevent by any means necessary."


"What else?"

"The other thing is that you must, under no circumstance, allow the client to get his hands on the package. If I find out that Mr Johnson has whatever he paid for, your entire team will suffer."


I wanted to question the validity of Arachne's threats, but someone of her reputation and decking prowess figuratively had my meatspace body by the balls from where she stood. She knew the name behind Birdie. My friends. My enemies. If she wanted to, she could have every other merc in the city on a manhunt for us. So my only option to keep the rest of the team safe was to play ball with Arachne's demands, then plan to screw Mr Johnson over without having Ray beat the crap out of me. At this point, I had no idea what was worse. Neither the possibility of retribution from Ray's fists nor getting my whole team captured by Remus Sec were appealing options. But Arachne was making me decide between outcomes where the odds were against my favor.


"You have until next Friday to decide the fate of your squad." She said. "If you choose to accept, I will explain everything. But if you refuse, then you don't deserve to know shit."


For the first time in my life, I feared another decker this much. I thought back to the job my team was hired for as I jacked out. There appeared to be something about this package that everyone wanted. Sadly, I was starting to have second thoughts...

The year is 2088

In the city of New Detroit, an up and coming band of mercenaries tries to get by with the jobs they normally work. But one job threatens not only the mercenaries, but the entire city.

Yata, Ray, Quince, and Dragon must not only deliver a stolen object to their employer. They must also survive against Remus Security, who wants to keep it for themselves.

One thing is for sure: The fate of New Detroit and the rest of the world depends on it.


Pi was fond of reading Chinese books. At first, it was not very used to them. But the Chinese language had a magical power, in which each word was formed by special rules, and each word's form had a special meaning. This was fascinating to Pi. Take the word "mountain" (山) for example, by looking at this character, the peaks of the mountain seemed visible. 
It followed Zhang Zian's suggestions to sit straight in front of the computer and type for a while, then sit on the window sill to look into the distance and observe the busy pedestrians. After a few minutes, as the eyes were adjusted and relaxed, it sat in the basket hammock chair and read books on the tablet, then repeated the cycle. Pi enjoyed the routine.　　
Maybe Pi was already used to searching for information in the complex records of the nameless book. It was able to read extremely fast and not only was it able to understand everything, it was able to remember them. Each time Zhang Zian came upstairs to check on it, he found it reading a different book.　
"Eeek!"　　
Pi typed its explanation: "I've read the English versions of these books. That's why I read fast."　　
Zhang Zian nodded in acknowledgment.　
The books that he transferred into the tablet for it were the electronic versions of the old and contemporary classics, most of which had been translated into English and introduced to western readers. It was normal that Pi had read them before.　　
Pi enjoyed any type of books. Novels, traveling journals, essays, poetry, science, biography...it enjoyed all of them. To satisfy his growing appetite for books, Zhang Zian retrieved the books he read in his childhood from the storage room, and borrowed some more from Wang Qian and Li Kun. He stacked the books next to the basket hammock chair so that it could access them any time.　　
Pi was gentle with the paper books. It handled them with care, and was careful when flipping the pages, yet these didn't slow down the reading.　
Soon, Pi finished reading all the paper books in Zhang Zian's house and those he borrowed elsewhere.　　
Apart from the daily business of the pet shop, Zhang Zian had an additional task of browsing the online shopping website for discounted books. He would buy some every time there was a promotion.　　

"Master, this is heavy! You are receiving a lot of couriers lately."　
Wang Qian and Li Kun walked into the shop with two heavy boxes, and placed them next to Zhang Zian's reclining chair.　
"Yes. I bought some books."　　
Zhang Zian removed the packaging with a knife. It was book series and journals. The journals were from last year, so the price was good. Pi was not picky about the publication dates anyway.　　
Wang Qian and Li Kun looked at the Abyssinian cat breeding book next to Zhang Zian, and asked in confusion, "Master, you've been buying so many books, but we've never seen you reading them..."　　
Zhang Zian rolled his eyes at them. "Do I have to let you see me reading? Can't I buy books for other use? Cut the crap. Go back and prepare for your exams!"　　
He didn't tell anyone else about Pi's arrival for now, especially Wang Qian and Li Kun. These two idiots had big mouths and liked bragging everywhere.　　
"Yes, Master!" They spit the tongues and ran back to school.　
After they left, Zhang Zian carried the books and journals to the second floor.　
"Pi, new books again."　　
"Eeek!"　　
Pi jumped out of the basket hammock chair, and came up expectantly to look at the books. Before Zhang Zian had finished stacking the books, it took one of them and started reading greedily, nourishing itself with knowledge.　 
After seeing how happy it was, Zhang Zian felt both glad and troubled.　
A mound of books had risen next to the basket hammock chair. His old books, borrowed books, recently purchased books and journals were stacked into four peaks of a mountain. The tallest one was the same height as a person, and the smallest one was as high as the waist.　
Zhang Zian could not find the books as fast as Pi was reading them. The books would reach the ceiling in a few days.　　
Paper books were more expensive and less frequent in discount. Storage was also less convenient. Books and journals were consumables to Pi, and had little long-term 

storage value. After all, it owned a nameless book containing everything. Reading Chinese books was only to appreciate the beauty and depth of the language.　　
When not reading, Pi appeared lonely, bored and melancholic. It knew that it could not go downstairs and show up in front of other people, which might bring trouble to Zhang Zian. Even if it did go downstairs, there was nothing to do and it could not communicate with the other elfins. It might as well stay upstairs to type. But typing all day became boring too. So it often sat idly on the window sill.　　
Zhang Zian was worried about Pi, and so did Old Time Tea, the traditional Chinese medicine expert. Old Time Tea said that long-term melancholy was not healthy, and Pi would fall sick if it continued this way. In modern medical terms, Old Time Tea meant depression. When someone was alone and low-spirited for a long time without interaction with the outside world, it could end up having depression.　　
Humans were social animals, and so were monkeys. Pi might be the same, who behaved like a monkey. But Zhang Zian couldn't possibly get a troop of monkeys to play with it.　　
Many studies suggested that negative mood had a negative impact on health, and may cause a variety of acute and chronic diseases, such as gastric ulcer, endocrine disorders, hair loss, etc. He did notice a lot of short yellow hairs while sweeping the floor lately.　　
Since paper books were not enough for Pi's reading appetite, after much thinking, he decided to seek help from the omnipotent internet.　
"Pi, would you like to try online novels?" He suggested to Pi.　
"Eeek?"　　
Pi was reading in the basket chair, and was distracted by his question.　
Zhang Zian explained, "Online novels are a new form of reading as the internet grew popular. They are pretty much like the e-books, except that they were created to be shared on the internet."　　
"Eeek?"　　
Pi put down its book and typed on the laptop: "Are they fun to read?"　
"Some of them are, and some are not. Online novels have a lot of genres, and are many in number. You can always find the ones you like." Zhang Zian answered honestly. In fact, he had not read many online novels. He didn't sound very confident. 　 

Leaving literary and artistic quality aside, the biggest advantage of online novels was its volume and number. Before he could find a better solution, they could at least gratify Pi's reading appetite, and chase away the melancholy and boredom.　　
"Eeek!"　　
Pi nodded and typed: "I want to try some."　　
"Good. I'm downloading online reading apps for you."　
Zhang Zian took away the tablet, downloaded multiple popular online reading apps in the App Store, registered accounts for Pi, then taught it how to search for books.　 
Pi took back the tablet happily, and dived into the ocean of online novels.
