As Dog Two ran like crazy, Wang Ling and the others drew closer to the Altar of Water in the south. The set-up of the world of the Palace of Mirrors was in fact very simple, but the shadow army invaded and forced it to become more complicated. 
As they drew near to the Altar of Water, Wang Ling and the others stopped and approached in secret. 
Wresting control of the altar now would mean regaining sovereignty over the world. Once the operation of the five element altars was restored, this swarm of shadow army invaders would be forcefully sent back by the nomological laws in the Palace of Mirrors to their original world. The departed spirits wandering around in this world would in turn return to their original worlds and rest in peace. 
As for the innocent killed by the shadow army, they would become inhabitants of the Palace of Mirrors. The nomological laws of the world would create new bodies for them, and then strip them of their memories of this world before sending them back to their original world. 
The nomological laws of the world were an order unto themselves. 
When the order was disrupted, the world fell into chaos. 
When order was reasserted, everything would return to what it was. 
In the real world, Gu Shunzhi's role was to maintain the order of the universe. 
But the Palace of Mirrors was obviously something Gu Shunzhi couldn't predict. 
This was an unusual world which existed in between the cracks. 
And an extraordinary world would usually only open in extraordinary circumstances.
So here was a new question for Wang Ling.
If the key figure behind the shadow army invasion wasn't the master of this world, then who on earth was the real master who created the Palace of Mirrors? 
Each altar had its own characteristic. 
The altar wasn't simply an array: its structure was far more complex. 
Each altar was composed of three key constituents. 
One: A material object of a highly spiritual nature that aligned with the altar's attribute.
Take the Altar of Water for example: its material object was very likely a river or a lake. 
Two: Offerings had the same attribute as what was used to build the altar. 
The offerings were usually magic artifacts with tremendous, ancient power. These sort of magic artifacts were mostly antiques that had already lost their original effects, but could still be used as sacrificial tributes. Dharmaraja's Holy Thunder Pill, for example, was a holy relic passed down in the Thunder clan for generations, and which was perfect as an altar offering.
Finally, the third and most inhumane key element: the altar envoy, who guarded the altar. 
Altar envoys were like sacrificial offerings themselves: they were people offered up to the altar, who resonated with the altar's attribute and were carefully selected. 
After becoming the guardian envoy of the altar, they would receive the altar's power and become immortal. On the other hand, they would lose their freedom forever. 
The altar was like a prison for the guardian envoys; each one was imprisoned inside, where no light shone… 
In the ancient cultivation world, various types of elemental altars were usually used to protect cities. Ancient cultivators used the power of the altars to defend their kingdoms. 
However, with the onset of modern cultivation culture, the altar became an inhumane and forbidden technique. 
Hundreds of years before the modern era, there were cultivators who had looked into upgrading the altars. After the upgrade, an alternative for the third key constituent was found: an "artificial puppet." However, these soulless puppets were, in the end, non-living things, and couldn't exhibit even a tenth of the power of a living person. After the altars' power was drastically reduced, they naturally phased out. 
Later, with the advent of modern cultivation, the sacrifice of living things was added to the list of forbidden techniques banned under the Cultivation Convention. 
Wang Ling had heard Old Antique talk about this part of history in class before, but it wasn't a test point and was just a piece of additional trivia in the modern history of cultivation course. 
Old Antique had vast experience far beyond what many people could imagine; he could be said to be erudite and well-informed, and could almost be described as omniscient. That particular lesson was still fresh in Wang Ling's memory, because he had been eating a crispy noodle snack on the sly in that class before Old Antique found and confiscated it!!! 
As everyone expected, up ahead was a marsh surrounded by a sea of tall reeds, which made it hard to see and could completely swallow up an adult. 
"There's a very strong aura." Stopping in front of the sea of reeds, Dog Two frowned deeply and involuntarily bristled. This was a natural manifestation of its perception as a beast, which indicated that there was hidden danger inside the reeds. 
"This is the Altar of Water. I explored it once before, and I got stuck and almost couldn't get out of the sea of reeds." Mother Juan shivered as she said this. 
"You weren't caught?" Dog Two was surprised. 
"The shadow army have never done anything to the original inhabitants of this world; our status gives us immunity. I pretended that I lost my memory and entered this area by accident; when they found me, they brought me out," Mother Juan said. 
Mother Juan's cooking skills were a little weaker in the Palace of Mirrors, but at the late Nascent Soul stage, her realm strength in fact wasn't low. However, it was still very dangerous to approach the altar. 
Perhaps the reason why the shadow army hadn't silenced Mother Juan was because they knew that the original inhabitants of this world would gradually lose their sense of self. 
"Don't panic. Let me and Old Guo check it out first." As they hid behind a rock, Wang Ming held out his index finger, and the metal covering it slowly opened. Several mechanical flies flew out directly into the sea of reeds. 
These were tiny reconnaissance drones in the shape of flies. Dog Two swallowed when it saw them.
It had been a very long time since it had eaten big meat flies… it really missed eating them. 
While Guo Ping was analyzing the terrain from the scans the drones sent back, he and Wang Ming jolted at a sudden shrill sound from their headphones which made them dizzy and their ears ring. 
"What's the matter?" Dog Two asked. 
"The drones were intercepted… None of the twenty-nine flies made it…" Guo Ping checked the image from the last fly drone before it disappeared: a small, muddy hand broke the surface of the marsh and directly dragged the drone down into the marsh and engulfed it. 
"It seems that passing through this sea of reeds won't be as easy as we thought." Looking at this scene, Dog Two shuddered. 
It seemed that the sea of reeds was already under the enemy's complete control. This sort of wide-ranging magical ability was very tricky, as there was no way to immediately find the spellcaster, while the other party could instantly start monitoring your position. Once you were dragged into the marsh, you might not be able to break free with your own power. 
The nature of a marsh was that the more you struggled, the deeper you sank. 
"Let's go." At that moment, Wang Ling stood up. 
He walked toward the sea of reeds. 
Then, an incredible miracle happened. 
As Wang Ling advanced, the marsh parted to create a path… 
The Great Sea-Parting Spell… This was one of Wang Ling's passive Heavenly Dao.

When her alarm went off, Danika stretched and smiled at her familiar kitten and dragon sticker. She pulled herself over the edge of the pod and dropped to her floor which had finished warming back up to its usual temperature overnight. She got dressed and carried her laundry down for pick up and was back in her room and ready in time for her grocery delivery to arrive.

She felt like it had been ages since she'd done her daily exercises and cooked a breakfast, but when she pulled herself back into the VR-medi pod to begin her series of adventures she was feeling pretty good. 

The first repeatable quest location was in a town to the south of Windbur. On her way out of town she spotted Hearthdragon and waved to the other fairy dragon player. A very cute little house occupied the tree behind Hearthdragon, and Danika wondered if the other player had already become wealthy enough to buy a home. She surreptitiously activated her Analyze Target skill and saw that the fairy dragon wizard was already level 78, and that it was entirely possible that with a little luck had indeed been able to buy a house already.

On her way to the town of Ebonroot, Danika lucked across a couple of creatures that she didn't think she'd collected hair, tooth, scale or nail from. She stopped and checked her forum post and found a new suggestion someone had left that suggested she contact pet shops for more rare animals. Another person had left a list of marine animals that had teeth even if they didn't have hair or scales. She sent a message to the NPC dolphin bard, Sea Song Tione, after reading that one.

In Ebonroot, the repeatable quest that had been introduced during the Week of Hearts was not too difficult to find, but Danika wasn't certain that she'd be able to complete it alone. Fortunately, as she'd hoped, Hikaru counted as a partner. Having a pet was really helpful sometimes.

She and Hikaru were given a list of materials to collect. The one that took them the longest was collecting 20 buckets worth of ebony sand that had been discarded from the alluvial deposits in the nearby gemstone mine, and carrying it to the glass blower. Hikaru didn't actually carry any sand, but the firefly cheerfully accompanied ZipZing, who carried all the sand needed in the embroidered pouch that could hold an unlimited amount of any one thing.

One of the skills that Danika had eventually been able to teach Hikaru was her Assimilation skill. But Hikaru hadn't yet learned any skills on its own, until they watched the glass maker create the surfaces for the mirrors. When the soft chime of a skill learned rang out, Danika pulled up her menus, but couldn't see any change at first. When she finally looked at Hikaru's page, she felt a little shocked. 

She eyed her firefly doubtfully, but Hikaru flew in its usual lazy circles with no sign that it had suddenly learned to cut glass. It didn't seem like it was a skill that a firefly would use often either, but Danika was really curious about how Hikaru would be able to cut glass. 

After a dozen discs of glass were cut from the enchanted cylinder, that the dark sand had been magically melted and blown into shape of, they were polished. First they were ground against a soft stone, and then they were ground with paste. Danika suspected that like the olive oil processing the witch had done, the processes had been sped up a great deal within the game.

The discs of smooth dark enchanted glass were then set into wooden frames. Another enchantment was cast upon each pair of mirrors, using the double winged seeds that Danika had been instructed to gather from a Sugar Maple, the eyes of a crayfish, and diamond dust.

When the six pairs of magically connected mirrors were completed, Danika and Hikaru were gifted a pair of the small dark mirrors. Presumably the others would be sold, but the NPC was rather vague about what would happen to them when Danika asked.

Each pair of mirrors acted like, well, magic mirrors. Or in modern terms, they could be described as limited video chat devices that could only talk to each other. They had been designed as toys for couples, but Danika could easily think of a dozen times in her adventures within "Living Jade Empire" when the pair of mirrors would have been extremely useful.

After leaving Ebonroot, Danika traveled farther south and west. As MatchlessMinion had described, the farther south she went, the hotter it got. ZipZing didn't suffer the heat the way his plush furry form had, because she didn't lose health, but she felt that the air was rather suffocatingly warm. Hikaru seemed quite happy though.

The next repeatable quest on her list was in the Etain capital city, and the city was built into the cauldron of an active volcano. It sounded like a very picturesque city if you were a fire elemental, but Danika wondered how dangerous it was going to be, until she arrived. 

The city was gorgeous and the lava had been tamed by some kind of elemental magic. There were falls and fountains and canals of liquid flame running through stone channels that didn't seem to be dissolved by the molten rock that they carried. There were also broad streets, wide enough for humans to travel upon comfortably despite the tiny stature of the elemental residents, and low protective barriers between the beautiful displays of tamed lava and the rest of the city.

The repeatable quest was for a messenger animal, a scarlet peacock butterfly. The butterfly apparently didn't actually live within the cauldron city, but the NPC who would direct you to the fields of Firespike flowers where their caterpillars could be found worked in a local pet shop.

Danika also took advantage of her visit to the pet shop to take the advice of the helpful person from the forums, and paid a hefty, but not unmanageable sum to collect hair, claws and scales from another dozen new animals. They refused to let her have any teeth, as none of their animals could regrow lost teeth. Danika tried to argue that the animals could be healed, but the pet shop shopkeeper adamantly refused.

The fields of bright red Firespike flowers among the cone shaped mountains of the southern volcanic range were beautiful, and Danika regretted that she didn't have screenshots unlocked. She had enough Karma left that she could have paid the tribute to the Twin Goddesses of Memory, but she wanted to keep a reserve for emergency uses of her restore prayer, as well as maintaining a reserve in case she needed to revive someday.

The bright red and black messenger butterfly was also very pretty, and Danika was very tempted to replace the snow leopard cub for awhile.

After a great deal of preparation, Danika begins her new digital dragon's life in a very small way.

They say the "Living Jade Empire" creates individualized quests. They say it can read your mind. They say you can find your heart's desire. They say that there's never been a game like it, and they're right but… they're also wrong.

The game is a data mine, built to retell the old tales that humans have been telling each other since language was invented. It doesn't read your mind, but it reads your search history, your favorites, and your blogs. The "Living Jade Empire" is literally crafted from fables, legends, fantasies, and maybe just a bit of stardust.

But in the end, will the game be able to figure out what Danika wants most? Will the desires of other players take priority? Or, will playing it change her, until she desires what it can give her?

A journey is always made up of many small steps, and this game has still only just begun.

We entered the treasure pavillion while talking and me telling him the story about me and the princess. Then a beautiful lady came to us offering to show us around. I thought why not i might as well check out some treasures and get to know their uses. Lin didn't even give her a glance. Then we followed the lady. She showed many pills and good swords to us. I did buy a few pills though because my original body has not started cultivating yet and getting pills in modern era would be really difficult and expensive. I could just sell the pills and use the rest of them in cultivation. I had been calculating each move i had been taking right now thinking of how it might be useful to me in future.
                          Then the lady suddenly stopped and while making a shy expression she asked," sir, we also have some good things you would want to gift to your loved one..... the ones for females." That was quite funny for me. i did smile sneakily and then keeping my composure i looked towards Lin and he was also laughing. I pushed him a little and then i said," looking might not hurt". The girl smiled and said," follow me". We went to another floor. That was a total paradise i must say. Like so beautiful, the room entrance opened with white curtains with hanging beads curtain. Then inside there were mirrors all around along with beautiful jewellery. 
                                         No wonder the treasure pavillion make so much money they are really good at advertising their products i thought. Afterall I'm still a woman even though i am in a man's body. Even i was mesmerized. I took a look around. There were all kinds of makeup. But makeup was my last concern afterall it couldn't compare to modern makeup. Then i went to the next door. There were all kinds of swords and artifacts. Also there were many beautiful body protective suits for females. The lady walking us around noticed my interest in swords and things like these for females. She one by one showed beautiful and really protective suits.
         There was one which caught my eye. It had the exact size as what i had wanted. Also it was really beautiful it had a silverish colour to it while i asked the lady to try it out for me. From her expression and body movement it looked comfortable to walk in. It had a white......

Li walked through the miles and miles of lush grass with his feet tingling with every step.
"I should probably make some clothes". Li thought, looking as his now tanned body from the direct sun. His hair started to grow longer the day he got here and it looked silver, reflecting into the grass. 
"Am I not human? No human has this kind of straight silver hair." He realized he hasn't actually looked as his full body yet due to lack of mirrors. Li started to think about mirrors and their reflection, but nothing showed up in his hand. 
"Mirrors are of glass and metal put together..... I should start with the desert biome." Li began to think about the hot sun with burning sand and the dunes. He soon found a pile of coarse sand in his sand, about a good handful. 
AUTOMATED SYSTEM: SAND ACQUIRED
" I want a 1000 mile by 100 mile square area of sand. Can you do that system?
 AUTOMATED SYSTEM: DONE
"Bu...." Before the words could get out of his mouth, a land of sand started to spread quickly to an exact square of 1000 miles by 100 miles if you could use something to look into space. Sand saw slowly heating up and flying into the air due to the present breeze. 
"So... yellow" What a wonderful shade! Li ran around and jump through the sand mounds randomly generated, feeling the rough yellow substance across his entire body. It didn't feel uncomfortable, despite being naked. The breeze also felt nice as he "swam" through the area. 
"I should start making some buildings, i'm not a naturalist". Li thought about the pyramids based in Earth's Egypt, filled with items not known by many people. He opened his eyes and saw a large pyramid, as big as he imagined, but it soon fell down, creating a small dust storm. From the collision with the ground, the air picked up and a large dust storm, approaching Li fast.  He tried to bury himself within the sand , but it was too late as Li got hit was millions of sand particles. He closed his eyes and braced for the worst. He brought his toned, bronze arms and shielded his face. He didn't feel any of the sand hit his arms, in fact, the only thing he felt was the wind. Li looked up and found the sand circle him, like there was a transparent wall.

HIDDEN TRAIT FOUND: RESISTANCE ISN'T FUTILE
Li found the the statement surprising and soon relaxed.
"At least I can't be killed anytime soon, though I wonder what will happen if I create life?
SYSTEM: YOU CANNOT CREATE LIFE YET. IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO KILL YOURSELF. IF YOU DO, YOU SHOULD REMEMBER THE CONSEQUENCES. 
Li shuddered as he thought about what mythology's hell looked like, with lava, obsidian, and Hades, lord of the Underworld.
SYSTEM: CONGRATS, YOU CREATED FIRE, LAVA, AND OBSIDIAN BASED OFF YOUR IMAGE.
Li looked in his hand and found three things. A golden flame that stayed stable. Along with the fire was a small block of black rock, obsidian. The third thing was a small drop of molten lava. Li started to panic, feeling the invisible pain fire and lava should, but soon found the fire and lava didn't burn through his hand. He didn't even leave a scorch mark.
"I can play with fire! I've got the thank the system for the resistance"

"Oh mana exist? I haven't heard about mana since I've read those web based novels. I wonder if this is similar to mana from the novels." Li pondered but eventually stopped, and thought about a mirror. Some reflected glass appear, with no frame.

Li was finally ready to see what body he had given since he been reincarnated. The results left him speechless.

Li is ready to pass on into the afterlife until a unique system makes him become a god of his own world.

Evelyn rushed as she placed the stone in a jewellery pouch she had saved from a Christmas present and ran towards the portal, and clapped her hands.

Evelyn: Hecatia City, Caleste.

The lights she had seen earlier glowed brightly as Evelyn ran through quickly. Now back in the capital city and kingdom of the Hecatia Realms, Evelyn ran out of the Portal Station and onto Spells Parade, and ran down the street, the auburn girl noticed a cafe and ran inside it and towards the counter, where there was a female barista with tattoos and a blue pixie cut hairstyle serving.

Barista: Hi, welcome to the Brews Cafe, what may I get for you today?
Evelyn: Did you see a girl pass by? Blonde hair, pale to fair skin, she was wearing a star jumper and boots? 

Luckily for Evelyn, she had the memory of an elephant and remember anything that she thought of. In some ways, that was a perk of autism, especially now.

Barista: Oh, yeah. I think some girls took her to Lady Hera Hospital.
Evelyn: Where's the Lady Hera Hospital?
Barista: It's on Wand Avenue. Take a map, it's free.
Evelyn: Thank you.

The auburn haired woman walked towards a stand to take a map and leaves the cafe. As soon as she was outside, Evelyn looked t see if anyone was in earshot, but the streets were empty, and the Australian woman spoke softly to herself.

Evelyn: *quietly* Okay, Spells Parade..... go up and turn left on Mirror Drive, then turn right onto Wand Avenue. Claire, here I come.

Evelyn ran in the direction she observed on the map and slowed down as she approached the hospital, which was identified by the huge sign saying LADY HERA HOSPITAL. It looked like any modern hospital in a capital city. Evelyn noticed a doctor and ran towards him.

Evelyn: Excuse me, was a blonde girl admitted here? Claire deLuna?
Doctor: *shakes his head no* No, no one here was admitted here by that name.
Evelyn: She might've had two girls with her? Please, it's important.
Doctor: Look, I don't have time to worry about some kids, okay? I have to heal all sorts of injuries and cure illnesses.

The doctor walked away, making Evelyn growl loudly and angrily as she sat on a bench by the hospital's bus stop.

Evelyn: Where did you go, Claire deLuna?

All of a sudden, the citrine star began to glow brightly, almost burning Evelyn's hand as she yanked it out of her pocket and looked at it.

Evelyn: Claire deLuna's whereabouts.

The star glowed brighter as Evelyn got up and began to walk, following the glowing of the star.

Evelyn: Where are you leading me, little star?

Evelyn walked from Wand Avenue to Potter Lane, where there was a shop with a sign reading CALESTE MAGICAL ANTIQUITIES, the star glowed so brightly, Evelyn had to put it back in the pouch and back in her pocket, before entering the shop to see a kind well-dressed gentleman standing behind a desk.

Owner: Hello, what may I do to assist you today?

He was probably hoping for a sale as it hadn't been visited by a shopper for ages, judging by the dust and cobwebs... at least Evelyn hoped they were forgotten Halloween decorations.

Evelyn: *politely* Would you happen to sell little hand mirrors, the ones you can hold in the palm of your hand?
Owner: Yes! We do sell those. Finally, I've been wanting to sell those little things since I purchased them from a dealer. How many would you like?
Evelyn: Give me... 2. 
Owner: Okay... and would you like them in a pouch? 

This was his big sale of those mirrors. 

Evelyn: *nods her head yes* Oh definitely.
Owner: I've never seen you here before? Which kingdom are you from?
Evelyn: Earth. 
Owner: *looks interested* Oh, Earth. Lovely land, they have some nice stuff there.
Evelyn: Yep. Great land, although this place is trying hard to top that.
Owner: What part of Earth are you from?
Evelyn: Australia.
Owner: Oh, Australia! What is with those hats with the bottle lids?
Evelyn: Keeps the flies away, saves your hands doing all the work with the unofficial Aussie wave. How much?
Owner: $10 dollars.

Evelyn looked at her small purse that she hid on the inside of her jacket pocket her mother had sewn into for safety. Evelyn opened the wallet and was relieved when her mother taught her to keep a small amount of money. The Australian did indeed have ten dollars in her purse and she took it out of her wallet and handed it to the shop owner

Evelyn: You accept Earth currency? It's all I got.

The owner looked at the girl before him and could tell she was distressed, but at least was gracious to still be polite.

Owner: *speaks softly and smiles kindly* Keep your money. It's on me.
Evelyn: Thank you so much. Caleste Magical Antiquities.

Evelyn began of memorise the name for reference and perhaps future shopping. She smiled before walking outside and pulled out one of the handheld mirrors, and looked at it intensely.

Evelyn: Show me Claire deLuna.

The mirror's reflection went from Evelyn's face to Claire, kept unconscious in an abandoned shop front

Evelyn: Show me her exact whereabouts.

The mirror showed a map of Hecatia City, including where Evelyn was and how far away she was from Claire. 10 buildings away. Evelyn sighed and went back inside the antique shop and to the owner.

Evelyn: Hi. Me again. Are there any abandoned shopfronts in this street?
Owner: Yeah, there's one 10 buildings away. It used to be a pawn shop but it was shut after the owner committed theft and accessory after the fact. Why?
Evelyn: My friend is being held there
Owner: I'll notify the Imperial Police.

He grabs a phone and dialling the number for the Imperial Police.

Evelyn: Would you happen to have blueprints? Or anything like that?
Owner: Luckily for you, I'm an L-FAM graduate. Class of '88.
Evelyn: *smiles* That's super helpful, thanks.

The owner, who Evelyn noticed wore a badge with the name Leonard, pulled out a basic oak wand and conjured a blueprint of the pawnshop, tapping his wand on the small mirror as the blueprint now popped onto the mirror's face.

Evelyn: Thank you so much!

Evelyn exited the shop and looked further down Potter Lane.

Evelyn: I'm on my way, Claire.

Meanwhile, inside the pawnshop, Claire was still unconscious, hovering up and down, whilst Erica was searching her bag and pockets, including her wand, whilst Keriana was looking to see if any bystanders were looking in on the abandoned shop front.

Keriana: *gleefully* Six more stones and I will be the Empress.

Erica walked up angrily to her mistress.

Erica: She doesn't have the stone!
Keriana: *yells* What?!
Erica: The Citrine Star is missing! It's not anywhere on her!
Keriana: We need that to get the Grim Grimoire open, you idiot!
Erica: I know, I'm sorry...

The sound of a glass being smashed and a door opening stopped the two villainesses as a familiar auburn-haired young woman entered the room.
