“Dindi!” Gwenika called from the woods. “Where did you go?”

Muck and mercy. Dindi hopped down from the log, scrambled into her outer wrap and backbasket and managed to be seated sedately on the riverbank by the time Gwenika caught up with her.

The travelers had stopped an hour before sunset to eat evening meal and camp by the river. The two groups of adults were too busy talking amongst themselves to bother about enforcing the No Talking rule among the Initiates. The boys had gone hunting together.

Dindi had hoped to spend some time alone, but Gwenika had found her, as usual, and now Dindi heard the voices of other Initiates meandering toward the log bridge.

“Your mother is a Zavaedi and you dance just as well as she,” Jensi was telling Gwena, the elder sister. Kemla and five or six other girls were with them too. “They say you’ll be invited to join the Tavaedi for sure.”

“So you’re that good, are you?” Kemla, nearby, shoved her way into the conversation. “What can you do? Let’s have our own little Vooma.”

Gwena looked coy. The Tavaedies were out of sight behind some trees around a bend in the river. “You know we can’t perform tama.”

“Who said anything about tama? I just want to see what you can do. Do you see that log? Can you do this?”
Kemla ran to the log and cartwheeled across it. She held her arms up in a V on the other side. “Well?”

“That’s so easy I can do it with one hand behind my back,” said Gwena. She cartwheeled over the log with one hand resting in the small of her back.

“Who needs hands?” said Kemla. With a rush back across the log in the opposite direction, she executed a no-handed cartwheel, landed on the log and did a handstand off the edge of the log to drop to the bank again. She crossed her arms and smirked at Gwena.

“Fa!” said Gwena. “Babies could do as much. Try this.”

Bending over backwards, Gwena flipped swiftly across the log in two successive back handsprings.
Kemla immediately followed by attacking the log with a round off back handspring.

Gwena replied with a full-twisting double back leap, an amazing move that ended with two backwards somersaults in the air before she landed several paces past the log.

“That’s nothing,” Jensi said loudly.

Kemla and Gwena both swiveled their heads in her direction.

“You think you can do better, Jensi?”

“Not me. I’m not insane. But I’ve seen Dindi do flips like that on a branch half as thick and twice as high off the ground. Haven’t you, Dindi?”

Dindi turned flame red. “Jensi, what are you doing?”

“You’re better than both of them put together. Show them what you can do!”

She wanted to sink into the earth and dissolve. “Um.”

“Yes, Dindi, show us what you can do,” Kemla said like sticky sweet poison.

“Sure, Dindi, give it a go,” Gwena said, more kindly. “It’s all in fun.”

Urged by the other girls, Dindi stood up. She ran toward the log.

“Dindi, wait, don’t you—” began Jensi, but her warning came too late.

Dindi flipped herself into a handstand at the end of the log before she realized she had forgotten to take off her shoulder basket. Turned upside down, the flap at the top snapped from the pressure and the entire contents spilled over her, down the log and into the river.

She squealed and tumbled out of the handstand. She caught her fall in a roll in the soft mud of the bank, so she wasn’t hurt, but the fall must have looked less controlled than it was because Jensi screamed, Kemla laughed and Gwenika gasped, “Mercy! Are you all right?”

True enough, it made a mess. When Dindi stood up, river slime coated her face and hair, not to mention her white wrap. Worse yet, her beautiful white dancing costume had fallen in the river, fortunately just in the shallows, and was covered with mud as well. Several of the heavy stone tools had rolled in deeper, and Dindi had to wade into the chill water up to her thighs to find them all. Was that everything?

The corncob doll.

She didn’t see it either on the bank or in the water. She was just starting to panic when she heard Kemla burst into another peal of laughter.

“Fa la, Dindi, is this your totem doll?” Kemla asked, holding up the ratty cob by its torn dress.

“Give it back to me,” said Dindi. The water reeds in the river tangled her feet as she struggled to climb back up the riverbank to grab the doll.

“Just look at it! Have you ever seen an uglier doll?”

Kemla threw the doll to Gwena, who sniggered. “She’s bald!”

The girls played keep-away with the doll, throwing it from one to another every time Dindi tried to snatch it back.
“She has no face!”

“All the beads have fallen off!”

“It looks a hundred years old!”

“What a disaster of a totem!” Kemla cried. “How—appropriate!”

The other girls on the bank laughed. Even Jensi. Not Gwenika though.

“This isn’t funny,” Dindi tried to jump and catch doll from out of the air, but Kemla caught it first and did a one handed cartwheeled over the log with the doll in her other hand.

“You have to come get it,” Kemla said. “Cross the log for it—on your hands. If you let your feet touch the log, I’ll throw Baldy here in the water.”

Gwena led the rest of the girls in a slow, rhythmic clap. None of them would help her. They thought this was just a game. If Dindi tried to warn them of the real danger, they would laugh and tease her.

What choice did she have? She couldn’t think of any clever way to put them in their place. If her fae friends were here, she would have at least had allies. But the only faery watching was a blue haired rusalka who lurked in the deeper currents at the center of the river. Feral glee swirled in her eyes and her waterweed hair swayed with the whitewater eddies of the river. If anything, she seemed to take more pleasure from Dindi’s misery than the human girls—rusalki were nasty Blue fae who enjoyed drowning humans. Fae weren’t always nice either.

Dindi handstanded onto the log. Her muddy skirt flipped down over her waist, revealing her loin girds, which caused more giggling. She grit her teeth and ignored it. Palm by palm, she hand-walked down the log. The moss slipped under her fingers, but she grasped the grooved bark underneath to keep her grip. It had been easy when she’d been practicing by herself, but now she felt self-conscious and clumsy.

“You have to ask nicely,” Kemla shouted from the far bank as Dindi neared the center of the log.

“Can I please have my totem doll back?” Upside down and covered with mud, she felt like an utter fool, but she had to have the doll back before it hurt somebody.

“Sure, Dindi. Here it is!”

Kemla threw the corn cob doll as hard as she could right at Dinid’s stomach.

Light flashed all around her. No, not now, was Dindi’s last thought before she tumbled into the water below and into the other mind.


A DESPERATE GIRL...

Dindi can't do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. Looking at my pile of items and my crafting menu I notice I can make new items after I got my knife sorted. The first is a basic wooden spear it simple costs 1 branch, but after I made the knife a new spear popped into place after it. A basic stone spear. I can use a knife, a wooden spear, and some lashings to make a stone tipped spear. 

I quickly fashion myself one and make another few sharpened knives. I need to have a knife for some other crafted items just like a hammer. 

I quickly just start making random items to see if I can unlock anything. I make a clubs and some small cages. I figure I can smack one of the smaller lizards on the beach if I can catch it and store it in a small cage. I have to be very careful though as the smallest I saw was about iguana sized and the biggest was komodo dragon sized. Both had sharp teeth and strong looking tails. I'll avoid those for the time being. 

I craft up a small looking campfire spot. I can't light it right now nor would I as I have nothing to cook and limited wood. 

Next up comes a basic axe. It required a club which is made from a branch. Some lashings and a stone. There is no pickaxes. I mean really do you expect stones to just look like a pickaxe head? What would I even use it for I'm on a Sandy beach.

[Stone Axe: a sharpened stone axe. Can be used to gather materials at a quicker rate. Can be used as a weapon. Can be used to process certain materials.] 

Basically I just have to have a nice thicker branch and gouge out a hole at the top with my knife and hammer. Then we put in a stone and tie it together with some lashings and boom a nice axe. I even ground it down with the whetstone. 

Looking at it I'm curious as to how my harvesting skill works with this. I pop outside my farm with my axe, spear, and knife. I keep the knife in my jeans belt loop the spear in my right hand and the axe in my left. I make my way over to a nice palm tree. I look around to make sure there's none of those terrifying lizards around. 

I raise the axe and give the tree a nice whack right at the base. 

*THWACK!*

.....nothing happens. 

*WHACK WHACK WHACK*

[Log Acquired x1] 

The notification pops off into my mind and there's a thud next to me. I look down and spot a perfectly cut log. 

"Fuck me this is fantastic." I mutter.

I quickly pop it into my farm and keep chopping. I receive some information in my head that I can get an item storing function if I build items in my farm. I'll look into that later.

I continue my chopping on the tree making sure to keep cutting around the base. It hurts my hands as I'm not used to doing things like this and I guarantee I'll have blisters from the vibration. 

*WHACK WHACK [log x1] WHACK [Tree bark x1 Acquired] WHACK WHACK [log x1]* 

I take a few breaks in between and test out some things. I cannot store the entire tree in my farm. I basically can't store anything I can't pick up or that's connected like massive boulders or rooted trees. For water it's kind of like sucking it into my hands bit by bit. I can spit out items from my farm though like all the water and sand I tested it out on. 

After about 45 minutes the tree finally falls. I store the fallen tree and items around me in the farm. Then pop back inside. I've got about 30 logs, a full tree, and 6 unripe coconuts. I've also got about 5 slabs of tree bark. 

I grab a log and a tree bark and head over to my work bench. First I check out my new log.

Pretty simple. I look up what I can craft with the log mostly it's buildings like a log cabin. it can be processed more with a splitting stump. Which I'm curious about. 

I pop out of my farm and start wacking at the tree stump I left behind. After about 5 minutes I get the notification. [Wooden stump acquired x1] [Palm roots acquired x5].

At this point in time my hands are killing me and I'm sweating up a storm. No use crying about blisters at this point. I pop back into the kingdom to rest and experiment. 

Sitting down at my table and just catching my breath. I calm my mind and just focus on the task at hand. I pull up the stump. basically it's only use is to make a log splitting station. for the log splitting station I need an axe and a wooden stump. 

When I'm done making it I use a log on it and it splits in half as I hit it with the axe. I split one of the halves and carry both of them to the workbench. What I ended up with was.

[Half log: A split log. Basic crafting material. Can be processed further.] 

[Firewood: 1/4 of a log. Can be burned for longer lasting fires.] 

Well that was a waste of half a log but oh well. The half log can basically be further crafted into smaller items like wooden bowls and cups. Basic wooden items. It can also be used with twine to make a basic bucket. 

Now back to the other item we neglected, the tree bark. Basically the only good thing we can make with the amount we have right now is a wooden shovel.

All In all I think I've gained a lot today it's time for me to crash out. No use being exhausted so I find a nice piece of floor to curl up on and get some rest.

You've wasted all your potential just sitting around so I'm going to force you to learn and survive.

"Hop on." Terrance said as he pointed to an exercising bike. He turned it on and the screen glowed. He set it to level one resistance helped to strap Sarah's feet in.
Sarah began to pedal. The wires were attached to her again and the data was filed into a system connected to a small, black device. She had no idea what it was or what it was for. Like the exercising she had done on the treadmill, she would do each level for one minute. She had very similar results as the previous test.
She would be perfectly fine until level 13, that was when she could no longer breath normally. She was soaked in sweat and she would begin to slow down.
Terrance noted down her results.
End of Stamina test number two.
Next, Terrance showed her to the spinning logs. He showed her how she needed to walk along one end of the log to the other side. It was like walking along a fallen tree trunk, except if she didn't have perfect balance and the perfect speed amount, it would spin like crazy, causing her to fall into the sea of square, foam blocks underneath. 
Unlike the other tests, being able to last a long time was not the objective. Nor was the objective to just keep going. This was a test of balance, patience and skill. She had to carefully walk across the log, trying to make sure it did not spin because if it did, she would have to walk across a spinning log. And that was not something she looked forward to.
Terrance assisted her as she climbed up a few steps to stand on a block of wood before stepping onto the challenge. She looked over at Terrance who was holding a stopwatch. He would time her every single try it took her until she made it all the way across the spinning log without falling or until she reached twenty tries, whatever came first. 
He nodded and she nodded back. He would only start the clock once she had both feet on the log.
She took a deep breath and tentatively placed one food onto the log. The log itself was slightly hollowed in the middle, making it possible to spin by putting a metal bar into the middle of i t and making it lighter at the same time. Because it was lighter, it made it a whole lot easier to accidentally spin the log while walking on it. 
She placed her other foot on it. Terrance had begun to time her. She lifted her right foot again to take another step and then-
Bang!
She fell into the foam pit.
"Ughh." Sarah groaned as she rolled over to look at the ceiling. She had landed face first into the foam. He was glad that it was filled with foam rather than water like a pool because she would have belly flopped and the impact surely would have given her a bloody nose. "How'd I do Terrance?" Sarah asked, her face grimacing, prepared for the terrible results.
"That is personally, the fastest time that I have ever seen somebody fail on the log runner. Needless to say, I hope you do better before your twenty tries are up." Terrance said. 
Sarah just groaned again and rolled out of the foam pit, landing face first onto the ground. "Ugh!!!" Sarah said. "Why! Why do I have to suck so bad at this?!?"
Soon, there was laughter coming from the doorway. Sarah whipped her head around to see who would dare to mock her and her failures when she saw a sharp jawline, freckles and short, curly black hair. "Alex! If you dare to laugh at me, let's see how you do better then!" She shouted. Rage written all over her face.
Alex looked at her blankly and that's when he knew; he messed up.

Alex climbed on top of the step, leading up to the platform. His guide, Molly, flipped through her clipboard and clicked her pen. She might as well write down the results of his attempts, it would save them from having to do it all over again, save time, and his results would be different because he would have already attempted it before. 
Alex stood on the block of wood before the log. He stepped onto it and then placed his other foot on. Molly started the timer and he took another step forward.
Bang!
Just like Sarah had, before he could even put his foot down, he had fallen, face first, into the foam pit.
For a moment, there was absolute silence. Then, there was Sarah. She was doubled over with laughter, wiping the tears out of her eyes and pointing her finger at him. "You thought you were so great! Hahaha! And-and then you- Hahaha! You did as terrible as I did! Make fun of me. Hahaha! You can do no better! Ha- hahaha!
Alex got up and brushed himself off. Because both Sarah and Alex were doing the same exercise, Molly brought him to one of the other spinning logs in the room so that way they could just finish the test that they had already started. 
Alex and Sarah both kept getting back onto the log to try again. Always trying to best each other. Soon, another pair walked into the exercising room. They did the treadmill test, the bike test, then they went over to the log test By then, Sarah and Alex had both finished the test and were coming out of the changing stalls after switching into their provided swimsuits. 
They watched as the person looked carefully at the log and then placed both of their feet on it They walked gracefully to the other side of the log on their first try."What the-" Sarah said.
They looked to see who was talking to them and they waved. 
"Max- how. How did you do that?" Sarah said astonished. Both Sarah and Alex had barely taken three steps when they had been flung off the log before their twenty chances were up and here he was, Max. Making it all the way across after his first try. 
Max shrugged and said, "What do you mean? All you had to do was walk across the log." 
"But the log spins!?!"
"So…? You just… walk. It's not that hard." Max replied
Sarah and Alex were stunned speechless. That log spin test was hard! He did it so easily. Then, Sarah remembered something. "Princess training?" She asked sweetly.
