Have you ever wondered why some of the novels you see in Webnovel have no star ratings? They are the novels that have gray stars on them and most people don't bother giving them a second look.

Elyon was one of them. Whenever he encounters a novel without a star rating he just overlooks them and proceeds to check other novels. His reason? He thought that those novels with gray stars are dropped or in hiatus. Basically, he labels them as "dead novels."

He didn't know that the majority of these novels are the stories of new authors, who just started writing their story in Webnovels. There are literally thousands of novels that are written in this platform and some of them are buried in the pages of history.

So what is a star rating? A star rating is the rating that you see on a novel. Some of your favorite novels have 4.6, 4.8 and some of them have 4.9 ratings which are quite high. A novel's rating come from the reviews of their readers. In order for a novel to have a star rating of its own, it must first have "10 reviews" and the average of those reviews will form the star rating. 

After becoming an author, Elyon changed his point of view regarding novels without a star rating. Some of these novels appear on the daily updates and the trending list. The trending list is one of the best places for a novel to be advertised. Even now, Elyon doesn't know the requirements on how to appear on the trending list.

His fellow senior authors said that the trending list is completely random. Even those novels who are very popular will not necessarily appear on the trending list. The only requirement is that your collection should not exceed over three thousand to be featured on the trending list.

Elyon just finished writing a chapter and decided to take a rest. He looked at the front page of Webnovels and saw the trending list for the week (the trending list lasts for a week and is reset afterward). 

More than half of them don't have any star ratings and he immediately understood that they are stories made by new authors. Elyon casually checked the titles and he found one title at the very back of the trending list.

There were no reviews, no comments, no anything. He decided to start reading it because he has a feeling that this novel will bring him surprises. 

He read through the chapters and contemplated. The overall appeal of this novel for him can be summed up in three words and that is "Simple and Clean."

There are no complicated writing, there are no complicated scenarios. Everything was simple and that is probably the reason why it is easier to read. For him, it was a good novel. It has a lot of potential and even though there some grammar and spelling mistakes, it doesn't change the fact that the novel is a good read.

He returned to the front page and once more looked at the grayed out star rating. He closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, he clicked the give a review button.

"Let me be the first one to give you a review. I hope that it will help other readers get a good impression of your novel." Elyon wrote his review. He didn't bat an eye and gave it a perfect 5-star rating.

In the past, I don't really pay attention to any novel without a star rating. I thought they were dead novels. Little did I know that these novels are very much alive. The authors behind these novels update them on a regular basis with the hope that someone out there will be able to read and appreciate their stories.

Some of these novels are dismissed and most people don't really care about them. They rot in some corner of the web and the authors who wrote them either gave up or persist in their work.

I believe that perseverance is a good trait a person must have. But sometimes, reality makes it hard even for the most stubborn of people. People wants to be appreciated. No matter how small, no matter how big, they want to be appreciated.

If someone doesn't pay attention to their efforts, then these people will ultimately lose their motivation. Their drive to move forward and persist will disappear. When the author loses all hope and abandon their works, then that is the time that the novel dies.

So please my dear readers. If you happen to see a novel on the daily updates or the trending list that have no star ratings, don't dismiss them right away. Give it a chance. Give the author a chance. Wouldn't it be great if you found a hidden gem along the way?

Once you found one, don't forget to leave a comment. It will work wonders and make the Author happy. If you want to go that extra mile, give it a review. Sometimes, even bad reviews can help as long as it's an "HONEST Review."

Point out the things that you like about the story and point out the things that you don't like. If you really like it, make sure to encourage the author not to drop his novel. Trust me, these simple things can split the sea and move mountains.

A Guide to Webnovels
 
Some of you may have heard of webnovels / webfiction by now. Huge successes like Worm or The Wandering Inn have certainly not gone unnoticed by speculative fiction fans and most of us have heard whispers about that legendary site: Wattpad. Still, webnovels remain a niche product, with its audience being mostly teenagers. People might avoid them because the quality of the novels wildly vary and it takes too long to sift through so many options until you find something decent. But how is that different from looking through self-published books? Another reason is that people might simply not know where to look. Especially with webfiction guide not accepting new users, there's no other sites that list webnovels from various sources for you to look through. Or are there?
Well, buckle up, fellow speculative-ists, I'm about to help you out with finding new, free fiction that releases at a faster rate than that one book if you've waiting for for 5 years!
(Full disclosure: I am a webnovel author. You may find my name / novel pretty quickly on one of the sites I will mention in this guide because I'm on trending and high up on the dark fantasy tag there. I'm not writing all of this for self-promotion purposes, however. It honestly makes me sad to see amazing webnovels doing poorly while average ones do amazingly simply because the audience is severely skewed. This is my attempt to broaden the audience a little bit, while giving other speculative fiction fans the chance to find amazing stories and fellow authors another outlet for their creations.)
Let's get into it:
The cons of webnovels
Quality does vary greatly and you'll have to sift through tags and read synopsis, reviews and first chapters looking for something you like and that is a bit timeconsuming. I still think it's not much different from looking for books you might enjoy, if you search efficiently.
Novels tend to be dropped. A lot. The golden rule that everyone tends to follow is: if it's less than 20~30 chapters or 200 pages, don't touch it. Filter out everything that is on hiatus. Big yes to novels that have at least one arc / volume / book finished.
The pros of webnovels
They're almost all completely free. Authors will have patreons, paypal and ko-fi if you want to tip them or get extra rewards, but that's it. If you don't like something, you've wasted nothing but a bit of time.
Fast releases. To make their novels competitive, authors tend to release new chapters at the very least weekly, with the most common release schedule being 2~3 times a week. Some even release daily. Some, still, release several chapters a day. You can follow the novel, forget about it during the week or for a month and end up with quite a stash of chapters to binge.
Being part of something that is being created "in real time". Webnovel authors will often ask for input from their readers, have fun polls where they ask them to vote on certain things, active discord servers, etc. You can also come up with and discuss theories and character growth as the story advances. It's a livelier community than getting a book that's finished and then you just talk about a full, finished project.
Where to look for webnovels?
With webfiction guide not accepting new members, it becomes a bit harder to find an impartial list of quality webnovels. You can still look at their top webfiction guide, but you're likely to have heard about some, if not all of the authors there. So, what to do when you've read through this list already (or browsed through it and nothing caught your attention)?
Muse's Success - This is a "sister site" to webfiction guide that serves as a directory. Webnovels have to be added manually either by fans or the authors and there is a rating system, but I can't vouch for how reliable it is.
If you want to forego directories and go right to the source, however, I'd say RoyalRoad is the biggest site for speculative webfiction. Yes, Wattpad exists, but it's largely for romance (some with speculative elements, of course), but it's also a bit of a mess to navigate and it's very unkind to new authors and works more like a SNS than an actual writing site. RoyalRoad offers better options in terms of following webnovels, looking through and filtering tags, getting rid of fictions you don't want to see, etc. It's a very good platform, overall, the best of its kind, I would say. It does lack a mobile app, but that's being worked on at the moment.
The Tops and Lists
Of course, the first place most people will look at is the tops and most viewed lists on any site. Don't be surprised if you find yourself disappointed with some of these. It happens. Make sure you don't stick to the first page only.
Best Rated - As the name indicates, this is a list of the best rated novels in the entire website. Some of them are already finished and have been so for years, some are still ongoing and have been so for years. You can select the complete only and active only best rated depending on whether you're looking for completed or on-going novels, too.
Trending - This is a list of 50 fictions that are doing the best at the moment, on the site. They call them the "rising stars" because they tend to be newer fictions, but you might find some older ones there as well.
Popular This Week - Again, as the name suggests, the novels that have been most viewed and rated the past week.
These lists tend to be somewhat repetitive. If you're on the top 7 on trending, you get a lot of exposure and that makes you rise on Popular This Week and Best Rated. It's kind of a cycle. So, what to do if you're done reading everything that interested you on these?
Search Feature

When Celestial Bane reached 100,000 words, there were already as high as 150,000 bookmarks. At the same time, it ranked tenth in recommendation votes and was already competing with many other great authors on the list. The battle was a fierce one.
Things did not stop there when Celestial Bane reached 150,000 words and there was not the slightest hint of decline in support. On the contrary, it continued making headway. Bookmarks reached 250,000 in one fell swoop, climbing up the recommendation votes list and achieving third place!

At 200,000 words, Celestial Bane's bookmarks had exceeded the 400,000 mark. It overwhelmed the recommendation votes and made it to the first in the recommendation list!
During the past few days, Celestial Bane received an influential banner recommendation from Genesis Chinese Literature. It was then that everyone realized how explosive it was!
The bookmarks skyrocketed to 800,000!
Even those renowned authors on the net could only watch and dream of such a result.
Ye Lingchen's editor Yogurt was stunned too. Although he knew that Celestial Bane would blow up, he never expected it to be so hot. It went against all odds, and if the result were to continue, it would surely suppress Genesis and set a new precedent of its own!

In the book review area of ​​Celestial Bane, comments numbering in the hundreds of thousands appeared every day. They were all compliments, leaving behind links in the hopes that Ye Lingchen could go to their respective websites. The attitude shown by those comments was that of absolute humility and respect!

Most agreed that its value depends on the readers' willingness to pay for a novel. And the most selling here in WN are romance and h e n t a i.

Honestly, it is true in a sense that most authors who don't write these two genres or have the general audience receive lesser income to none. However, there are also other genres that are popular.

What saddening is that a story which has no s** will be buried deep in the list of books.

One time, a person told me that he won't read books without s**. I think you understand what I mean.

Those good literary authors will just choose Amazon. I totally agree with that.

But, is that what really makes a book valuable? So, the authors will just resort to writing stories with s**  since most will welcome it.

I feel sad if it is.

I've been reading and watching epic and classic stories like Mary Poppins, The Twelve Kingdoms, Fushigi Yuugi, The Vision of Escaflowne, Star Wars, Anne of Green Gables, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, and others. 

These are great books but I'm not sure if the new generation is still reading them.

Hoping they are.

So, what is the worth of a writer? Of a person's storyteller's heart and creativity?

Will it just be buried deep in isolation? Will it just be following the flow of readership and abandon its desire to produce good stories?

I disagree. We still love good stories. There are still more readers who love good reads. In fact, these type of stories are more engaging and imploring. Those epic stories won't be called epic if no one reads them anymore. They are classified as such because their worth is beyond trends.

They simply go against the flow and create a tsunami, leaving people awestruck.

That is the type of book I want to write. I prefer to be remembered as an author who writes good stories without compromising the principles I believe.

Don't get me wrong. There are still good books with a bit of those s** things out there that you can read. But they don't focus on those scenes but on the story itself.

I am a person who never follows trends. And I care less what people call me. I will rather be true to myself than to follow the crowd and lose my self-respect.

In my opinion, the worth of a story is not only on the business side but also on how much heart and effort the author gives to his/her books.

To authors: Let us enjoy writing good stories. Let us be proud of what we write for not everyone can be authors. And not all writers can finish a book. The truth, most books here are unfinished.

To readers: Support good books and give the authors that confidence to continue writing good stories. Without your support, the authors might give up. If no one read good stories, then there's no point on writing one. But I believe most readers still love those type of books.

This is a novel encompassed with mystery, ethics, family ties, and romance. Of course, the highlights of this book are the murder cases. 
Although it’s a modern setup where none of the characters have a system or any other cheats, the Author managed to delight me with her writing, creative plots and a good pace without dragging her story. 
I marvel at the way the Author links up the clues and plot to explain the individual cases as well as paving the way to unravel the huge conspiracy behind the individual murders. Romantic plots are light-hearted so readers could take a breather from the plots of gruesome murders.

Putting down his cell phone, Zhang Zian lay down flat on the bed. Soon, he was half-awake and half-asleep, and he would completely fall asleep at any moment. 
In the darkness, Pi had been watching him the whole time. It had barely moved, except to slightly change its posture after its legs started to get numb.
Pi had always known about Zhang Zian's actions. It could tell from Zhang Zian's exhaustion. 
Since Zhang Zian was so tired, it wouldn't matter if he did these things later, right?
Pi opened its mouth and silently imitated the shape of someone saying "thank you."
What?
Zhang Zian thought he heard something. It seemed like someone was talking to him. He barely could open his eyes. His drowsiness was as heavy as a mountain, pressing down on his eyelids.
He looked around and found nothing out of the ordinary. He unlocked his phone screen and saw that it was past two in the morning. 
Since he hadn't logged out from the Qidian app yet, he clicked open Yang Chenkong's comment section, the second reading list owner he advertised on that night, hoping to find Yang Chenkong's review on Pi's novel. However, he found no review, and saw that the advertisement he had posted was gone.
No wonder the comment section was so empty. As it turned out, Yang Chenkong deleted all of the advertisements in his comment section. Zhang Zian's efforts were again all in vain. 
He couldn't keep his eyes open anymore. He shoved his cell phone under his pillow and fell asleep.

Alright so this is just some things I thought I should probably explain going forward a bit along with some questions about things I was wondering if you guys wanted or not. But first off I would like to thank everyone for reading this little story of mind. Thanks for all the comments, collections, reviews, power stones etc. They really help out new authors like me and I encourage you guys to do similar things for other new authors that write stories you're interested in. Oh and I would still like for you guys to put out some reviews so I get an idea of how you feel about this story so far, it also helps bring in new people to read the story sense I'm fairly sure a lot of people don't read stories that don't have enough reviews yet. So that would be helpful.

Anyways going forward I'm definitely going to have to add some more tags to this story based off of the epilogue alone, so if there are any tags you guys think will fit then go ahead and add them in the comment section and I'll put them on it if it fits the ideals of the story. By the way don't worry about me doing some sort of drastic out of left field change to the story, if there is a change coming then there is probably going to be foreshadowing for it before hand. I've never been one to like when an author changes a big part of what people like about the story without reason behind it. Also I will probably add another character list that says volume 2 behind it with any new characters from that volume. I don't want people just starting the story to go into the character list and be spoiled about stuff they're nowhere near ready for. 

The last thing I wanted to ask was if you guys wanted like a status page in the auxiliary chapter. I will only be keeping track of Joshua's stats, but I will usually give you a frame of reference of how strong other characters are, just not an exact description. I've already been keeping track of his stats for myself, but not for every time he levels just when portions of the story ends, or after a major training session or something along those lines. Oh and there are no health points in this story. If you take a lethal blow (like getting your head chopped off or something) then your dead. No healing magic or medicine or anything is going to bring you back from that. I explain a lot of these things through out the upcoming chapters, but I don't want to just do constant info drops so I spread it out a bit as Joshua encounters situations to learn about such things. If there are any other things you think I should put into the auxiliary chapters let me know and I'll try to do it to the best of my abilities without spoiling to much.

Joshua is a young man fresh out of college and preparing for medical school. After dropping his friend off at the airport and packing up he takes a road trip to Las Vegas to meet up with his family on vacation. On the way a weird ringing sound grabs his attention and before long take his consciousness. When he wakes up the world has changed, several people have disappeared, and dead miasma born creatures walk the streets. Will Joshua be able to survive his circumstances and figure out the mysteries of the strange occurrence?

This story will be PG-13 (didn't want to say general audiences considering some vivid imagery)
