a skyscraper. There were shadows of cars on the streets below him.
The top right corner of the comic book carried the numbers '1962', and the bottom left
corner was labelled '12 cents'. The word Marvel was neatly printed above Spiderman. It
was a Marvel book.
Hans said, "Dramatic? I am beside myself. This seems to be the first Spiderman comic
book from 1962. If it really is, this is very valuable."
"More than ten million dollars?" Li Du asked expectantly.
Hans rolled his eyes, "How can that be? But it might fetch a few hundred thousand or a
few million."
Once he laid his hands on his laptop, Hans quickly made an internet search. Then, a
piece of news flashed on his screen. There was a picture of their comic book on the
news website.

The news article described the story of that comic book. At an auction in Paris last year,
that first issue of Marvel's Spiderman comic was brought out, and Comics Connection
bought it for 1.2 million. It was actually exhibited in its town hall!
After reading that piece of news, Hans carefully removed the packaging to examine the
comic book more closely.
Having read the publishing details, he could not help but pump his fist in the air. He
yelled, "Yeah, yeah, yeah! This is awesome! It's this book! One million and 200,000 !

Shocked, Li Du asked, "Really? Someone would actually fork out over a million for a
comic book?"
The most expensive books that Li Du had come across were the set of National
Geographic magazines he kept. They were priced at more than ten million.
However, that was ten million for more than a thousand magazines. Besides, most of
those were the only existing copies in the world. Also, from his perspective, National
Geographic magazines represented parts of history. It belonged to the narrative of all
humankind, and was not something that comic books could compare to.
Now this comic book disrupted his understanding and knowledge of magazines and
their value. A comic book, one that was published only fifty odd years ago, could
actually be worth more than one million?
A million was not the most they could earn from the comic books, however. As they
continued to organize the stack of comic books, they found a few more that were as
precious or even more so.
One of those was the first issue of Superman. On the front cover, Superman was
wearing his iconic red cape, blue spandex top, and red pants. He was running away
from a storm, looking as cool as ever.
In the middle of the front cover were the words 'Action Comics #1'. This meant that it
was the first issue.
Hans caressed the dated comic book and said, looking punch-drunk, "This is history.
We are looking at history. Buddies, this was the start of it all, the birth of American
heroes! We are looking at a baby photo of an American hero!"
Li Du asked, "Is it very valuable? Run an online check, how much can it fetch?"
Hans said, "There are no trading records online. At most, there are only ten copies of
'Action Comics #1' in the entire world. Even DC Comics Company don't have it… oh,
they had it previously, but it was stolen!"
Li Du was optimistic, "Then it should be worth a lot, right?"

The Shadow has a long and storied history. Over the course of the character's radio and publishing history, The Shadow became an American icon in his own right, and was even the inspiration for Batman, V for Vendetta, as well as being cited as a strong influence on the evolution of comic book heroes in general. 

The Shadow has many ties to DC, even though the character was published by many different companies at different points in history.  Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, and Lester Dent (who wrote the Doc Savage stories) both wrote stories for The Shadow, among others.

DC Comics first published a Shadow series in the mid 1970's. An aging Shadow also appeared in Batman comics in which it is revealed that (in-universe) The Shadow was Batman's "biggest inspiration", as well as the surprising facts that The Shadow saved a young Bruce Wayne as a boy, and that The Shadow knows who Batman is, but the secret is safe with him. Batman also referenced The Shadow when he was once disguised as a night janitor at a police station, a method which The Shadow often used to obtain access to police records in his day. 

Another couple of DC published Shadow series was released in the 80's, and there was one more in the 90's. The Shadow also made a few cameo's in other comics in the 90's. 

This fanfic blends the radio version with the novel and comic book version. Certain RPG systems have been used to provide stats for the character to make tracking of changes easier. This interlude does not cover the many other Shadow comics, novels, pulps, and even movies that have been published over the years.

The Living Shadow, more commonly known as simply The Shadow, is whispered about but seldom seen, feared and mysterious, but frighteningly effective once involved. The Shadow has worked with famous figures such as Doc Savage and Batman, and is even cited by Batman as a source of inspiration and a model figure. 

Decades have passed and nothing as been seen or heard of The Shadow. Criminals have forgotten the chilling whisper in the dark, "The weed of crime bears bitter fruit!" Nor do they recall the frightening laughter in the dead of night. 

But soon the streets will again be haunted, the criminals stalked, evil pruned.

It has been almost 3 months since the start of school and we were scheduled to have our first exams next week. It would be the start of summer vacations after that. For now, I have been able to keep up with the curriculum even though I have only vague recollections of what this body's previous owner learned in middle school. I have been struggling the most with 2 subjects - Japanese and Japanese history, especially Japanese history. That's 2 out of the 5 subjects we have. Luckily, we would be able to choose streams next year and I would not have to touch history again. But it was imperative that I learn Japanese properly if I wanted to pass as a true Japanese man. So from the very first day that I possessed this body, I have been trying to cram as much knowledge about the language in my mind as I can. Luckily, I inherited some proficiency of the language from this body's previous owner, enough to understand hiragana. This helped me to understand the guide books to kanji, that I bought secretly. I can't even ask for help as people would get suspicious.
 
I am doing okay with science. Sae-sensei helped me a lot with maths. And lastly, English - the only subject I am comfortable in.
 
Monday. The day started with Sae-sensei's class as usual. She was done with the topics that were going to come in the exam. So she gave us a mock test. The questions were as tough as it could be for the limited topics that were going to come in the exam. Nonetheless, my preparation for maths was solid and I got all answers right. It was a self-evaluation, so I have no idea how others did, but listening to Endo's groans and Akagami Hime's dark expressions, it was obvious that they were not that comfortable with the subject. Luckily they were unwilling to discuss the mock test after it was over so we were able to avoid a possible awkward situation.
 
The next periods were mostly revision and doubt clearing. By the 5th period, the class was getting a bit rowdy, so I decided to ditch it and go study by myself in a quieter place. As the class representative, I could not just leave willy-nilly so I had to call in a favour. I texted Sae-sensei and asked her to get me out. Yes, you read that right, I had managed to get her LINE number during one of our after class study sessions. For some strange reason, she always sits alone in the History club's room (she is their advisor), instead of mingling with the other teachers during her breaks. I also feel that her relationship with the other teachers is a bit cold. But that is an investigation for the future. For now, I had to get out of the self-study class that our history teacher had given us while he dozed in the chair.
 
I walked up to him and told him that I was required elsewhere. He opened one eye to look at me and waved his hand, indicating me to leave. I told Endo, who was busy chatting with the guy sitting behind him to text me if somebody asks for the class representative.
 
"You leaving?"
 
"Yeah, I have something to do…, just message me if any teacher asks for me."
 
"Will do bro…see you soon."
 
"Yeah…"
 
I took the notebook in which I took notes and left the classroom. The history club's room is not far from us so I made it there in no time. As expected, Sae-sensei is sitting there by herself, reading a comic I'm sure she confiscated from a student in the morning. I have heard the comic community is very strong in Japan and the body's predecessor had an unhealthy obsession with comics and cartoons, but I personally don't understand a single one. It may be because I was poor in my last life and did not have any exposure to comics and video games during my childhood.
 
I knocked on the door, informing Sae-sensei of my presence.
 
"Ah, you're here. Can't concentrate in class?"
 
"Yeah, there nothing much to do and the students are getting rowdy."
 
"What subject do you have now?"
 
"History."
 
"And your teacher…?"
 
"He gave us a self-study class and is taking a nap."
 
"Really?"
 
"Yeah, and I couldn't do much self-study in the noisy classroom, so I asked you to get me out of there."

Sae-sensei went back to her comic and I started going through my notes. One of the advantages of studying in the history club's room is that they have a ton of reference books lying around, and I really needed to cram those dates before the exams. So I picked some that were relevant to the upcoming exam and began studying. The room descended to a comfortable silence, with only the sound of pages turning. That is until the bell signalling the end of the period rang. When I looked up from the book I was reading, I found that Sae-sensei had put down the comic at some point and was staring at me.
 
"Pretty focused… you didn't look up even once."
 
"Yeah, I'm a little weak in this subject."
 
"You gonna stay?"
 
"If you'll allow it, then yes."
 
"Got nothing to learn in class?"
 
"The portion has already been covered. The assignments and quizzes have also been collected and evaluated. So, there's not much left to do in class."
 
"Okay, I'll leave this room to you. I'll be back in the last period."
 
"Thank you very much."

The next two periods went by smoothly. I texted Endo a couple of times to make sure that I was not needed in class and his replies told me that I was not even missed. I kept to my business and did as much study I could fit in these 2 hours.
 
15 minutes after the start of the last period, I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up to find Sae-sensei looking over my shoulders.
 
"Uh, History…it was one of my weak subjects too. Did you take a break?"
 
"Not really, no."
 
"C'mon, you'll get neck pain if you keep your head buried in books from 3 hours continuously. Go buy me a coffee, black. Also, wash your face before you come back."
 
"Yes ma'am."
 
I went to the washroom and splashed my face generously with cold water. I hadn't noticed the fatigue that had built up while I was studying. I cracked my neck a couple of times to relieve the stress in my shoulders. This body is still a little softer than my previous one even after the exercise I have given it for the past three months. I dry my face and go to the vending machine to get 2 cans of black coffee and return to the club room.
 
"Hmm? You like your coffee black?"
 
"I don't drink coffee often, but when I do, I prefer it black."
 
"Somehow I can imagine that…come sit down and tell me how's your preparation going. You ready to take the top spot in our class?"
