At first Anna had been gratified to see the final Quidditch Cup go on so long - as a Gryffindor she was a bystander at the House Cup thing, it wasn't like Gryffindor ever won. In contrast, last year's World Cup of Quidditch, to which her family had bought some very expensive tickets, had been over in ten minutes which was awful. Modern Quidditch games had become too short, the Snitch caught much too quickly. It was a widely-talked problem among aficionados: broomstick enchantments had advanced, while the Snitch stayed the same regulation speed, with the result that Quidditch games had become shorter and shorter. At professional levels the sport of Quidditch had been reduced to a contest of who had the deepest pockets for their Seeker's experimental racing broom, and the rest of the players might as well have been watching from the stands.
Everyone knew something had to be done, the situation had been getting worse for centuries and now it was intolerable. But the International Confederation of Wizards' Quidditch Committee was mired in all the usual acrimony of the I.C.W., screaming disputes between Germans and Bulgarians, and somehow nobody could agree on exactly how to fix the rules. To Anna the correct course seemed obvious, just make the Snitch fast enough to restore the four-hour or five-hour games of the early nineteenth century and the Golden Age of Quidditch. Except the Belgians thought the duration of a professional game should be two hours like in La Belle Époque when Belgium had dominated Quidditch, and the lunatic Italians wanted to go back to the week-long Quidditch games of the fourteenth century, and Britain's even crazier blood purists kept on talking up the occasional day-long Quidditch match as proof that broomsticks couldn't really have improved since everything was better in the old days which was not how the Interdict of Merlin worked.
She was one hundred percent on the side of Harry Potter that it was time for Hogwarts to give up on those gibbering slowpokes and just change the rules, starting here and now. But not by eliminating the Snitch, that was going all the way back to eleventh century Kwidditch. It didn't matter if Headmistress Hufflepuff had first introduced the innovation because one of her students had wanted to play the game but not been suited to the usual roles. Snitches had caught on internationally because it was more exciting when the game could always end in the next minute.
Anna had been arguing this viewpoint at the top of her lungs for the last thirty minutes, quite forgetting to pay attention to the game. Thanks to a lucky coincidence of seating she'd been near the Boy-Who-Lived and his sign, and hence she'd managed to stake out her position right from the start.
She was aware, in the back of her mind, that if the Quidditch rules really did change starting here and now, then this was the most important thing she'd ever do. She could almost feel the pressure of Time twisting around her as though the fate of Quidditch Itself were being settled this very day, and she was standing close to the center of it... though she hadn't gotten high-enough scores in Divination to actually sense anything like that, of course.
She hardly noticed when at one point the Boy-Who-Lived stood up to go to the bathroom.
The Boy-Who-Lived did catch her eye when he trudged back; Harry Potter looked a bit tired and wobbly, though his uniform appeared as trim as if he'd just changed into a new one.
She noticed half an hour later on, when Harry Potter seemed to sway a bit, and then hunch over, his hands going to cover up his forehead; it looked like he was prodding at his forehead scar. The thought made her slightly worried; everyone knew there was something going on with Harry Potter, and if Potter's scar was hurting him then it was possible that a sealed horror was about to burst out of his forehead and eat everyone. She dismissed that thought, though, and continued to explain Quidditch facts to the historically ignorant at the top of her lungs.
She definitely noticed when Harry Potter stood up, hands still on his forehead, and dropped his hands to reveal that his famous lightning-bolt scar was now blazing red and inflamed. It was bleeding, with the blood dripping down Potter's nose.
She stopped talking mid-sentence. Other people turned to look at what she was staring at.
"Professor McGonagall?" Harry Potter said in a wavering voice. There were tears in the corners of his eyes, which shocked her; the Boy-Who-Lived did not seem like the sort of person who would burst into tears. Harry Potter raised his voice further, as though it were hard for him to speak. "Um, Professor McGonagall?"
Professor McGonagall turned away from where she was arguing with the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. The Head of Gryffindor's eyes widened in shock, and then she was moving people out of her way, almost running. "Harry!" she said. "Your scar!"
Silence was spreading, in a widening circle.
"I think," Harry said, his voice still wavering but louder, "I think he's back. I think I'm seeing - through Voldemort's mind -"
Anna took a step back at You-Know-Who's name and nearly fell over a bleacher. An older boy standing next to her gave a cry of dismay, and then the Boy-Who-Lived shrieked even louder.
"HE'S KILLING THEM!" screamed Harry Potter.
Half the Quidditch stadium turned to look at him.
"The ritual!" cried Harry Potter. "Blood of his servants! The blood, the life! He summoned them, he took their heads, their blood, the life, to renew his own - THE DARK LORD RISES, VOLDEMORT IS RETURNED!"
Madam Hooch blew a shrill whistle, and the Quidditch brooms that hadn't already stopped in midair began to slow. For herself she wasn't sure if this was a joke; if it was, Boy-Who-Lived or not, he was in more trouble than she could even imagine.
Professor McGonagall raised her wand into position for a Quieting Charm and Harry Potter caught her hand.
"Wait -" Harry Potter gasped, his voice lower, but still loud enough that she and the people near her could hear clearly. "He can be stopped - I see his mind, his mistake - he can be stopped now - THE WAY IS STILL OPEN! SHE'S FOLLOWING HIM! SHE WHO VOLDEMORT SLEW!" Harry's voice rose further, as Anna's own mouth fell open in sudden confusion. "RETURN! RETURN, RETURN, REVIVE AND STOP HIM! STOP HIM, HERMIONE!"
And then Harry Potter fell silent. He looked around at the people staring at him.
She'd just about decided that this had to all be a prank in unbelievably poor taste, when a distant but sharp CRACK filled the air.
Harry Potter swayed, and fell to his knees, even as her heart jumped into her throat. An explosion of excited babble rose around them.
She could still hear the words from Harry Potter's mouth, as Professor McGonagall knelt next to him. "It worked," Harry Potter gasped aloud, "she got him, he's gone."
"What?" cried Professor McGonagall, then glanced around. "Quiet! Quiet, all of you! Harry, what happened?"
Harry Potter was speaking rapidly but loudly. "Voldemort - tried to revive - he summoned Death Eaters and he killed them, stole their blood and life - Hermione's body was there, I don't know why, maybe Voldemort was planning to use it for something - Voldemort came back, he resurrected himself, but Hermione followed him back and she destroyed him, he's gone, it's over. It happened in a graveyard near Hogwarts, it's," Harry Potter rose to his feet, still swaying, "I think it's in that direction." Harry Potter pointed in the rough direction the CRACK had come from, "I'm not sure how far. The sound from there took twenty seconds to get here, so maybe two minutes on a broomstick -"
With a motion so smooth it looked unconscious, Professor McGonagall shifted into a stance and said "Expecto Patronum." She addressed the glowing cat that then appeared. "Go to Albus, tell him he must come at once -"
"Dumbledore's gone!" cried Harry Potter. "The Headmaster is gone, Professor McGonagall! The Dark Lord trapped him, he reversed some kind of trap the Headmaster planned and Dumbledore was caught outside Time, he's gone!"
The horrified babble around them rose in pitch.
"Go to Albus!" Professor McGonagall said to her Patronus.
The moonlit cat only looked at McGonagall sadly, and Anna sucked in her breath in sudden horror, feeling like someone had punched her in the stomach. It was real, it was all real, this wasn't a joke.
"Professor McGonagall, Hermione is alive!" Harry Potter raised his voice again. "She's really alive and not an Inferius or anything, and she's still there in the graveyard!"
"A broomstick!" Professor McGonagall shouted. She turned to the players hovering motionless over the Quidditch field. "I need a broomstick. NOW!"
Despite everything, Anna raised a hand in mute protest, then caught herself, even as the Ravenclaw and Slytherin Seekers came zooming over (with excellent strategic sense, since they weren't actually doing anything).
Harry Potter was already retrieving another broomstick from his pouch, a multi-person one.
Professor McGonagall saw this, and nodded firmly. "You stay here, Mr. Potter, unless there is some excellent reason you must be there. I will go at once."
"You mustn't!" squeaked Professor Flitwick, who'd shoved his tiny way through the crowd, occasionally running under someone's legs. His eyes were wide, he looked as though he wanted to faint. "You have to stay at Hogwarts, Minerva! You - you're the -" Professor Flitwick seemed to be having trouble speaking.
Professor McGonagall spun around to face Professor Flitwick, and then stopped, blood draining from her face.
Then she seized the broomstick from Harry Potter's hand, and presented it to the tiny half-goblin Professor. "Filius," she said crisply. All the incipient panic had disappeared from her voice, she now spoke in her crisp Scottish accent as though addressing lessons on Monday. "Look for the graveyard of which Mr. Potter spoke, find Miss Granger. Apparate her to St. Mungo's and then stay by her."
"I think -" Harry Potter said hoarsely. "I think Transfiguration might have been used in combat there - Professor Quirrell tried to fight Voldemort - take precautions -"
Filius Flitwick nodded without halting in getting on the broomstick.
"Professor Quirrell's dead!" wailed Harry Potter. The anguish in his voice carried clearly. "He's dead! The Dark Lord killed him! His body -" Harry Potter choked up. "It's there, in the graveyard."
She stumbled back again, feeling it like another punch in her gut. Professor Quirrell had been - one of her favorite Professors, ever, he'd made her rethink everything she'd believed about Slytherin, she'd known in some distant way that he was probably going to die very soon but to hear that he was really, truly dead...
The Boy-Who-Lived sat down on the bench, as if his legs couldn't support him anymore.
Professor McGonagall turned to the crowd, touching her wand to her throat. "QUIDDITCH IS OVER," her amplified voice boomed out. "GO BACK TO YOUR DORMITORIES -"
"Don't!" screamed Harry Potter.
Professor McGonagall turned to look at him.
Tears were leaking down the Boy-Who-Lived's cheeks, he looked like the interruption had surprised himself as much as it had surprised anyone else. "It was Professor Quirrell's last plot," Harry Potter said, his voice breaking. The Boy-Who-Lived looked at the Quidditch players who had now flown to nearby, as though speaking to them directly. "His last plot."
Harry Potter was floated off by Professor McGonagall to the infirmary. The other Professors ran off to oversee who-knew-what, leaving only Professors Sinistra and Hooch behind. At the stadium, rumors ran wild; Anna repeated everything she could remember hearing as best she could. Something had happened to Dumbledore, some Death Eaters had been summoned and killed (no, Harry Potter hadn't said which ones), Professor Quirrell had gone out to face the Dark Lord and died for it, You-Know-Who had returned and died again, Professor Quirrell was dead, he was dead.
In time most of the students wandered off back to their dormitories, to sleep if they could.
Anna stayed in the stadium, and watched the rest of the game, ignoring her body's need for sleep, and her eyes that often blurred with tears.
The Ravenclaw team put up a valiant fight.
But there was no Quidditch team anywhere that could've defeated the Slytherins that day.
Dawn was tinging the sky when the Slytherins won their final game, the Quidditch Cup, and the House Cup.

"Mr. Potter from here on, I forbid you to even attempt legilimency without my approval. Is that clear?" The Hat finished in a tone that indicated that Harry had no option but to agree with him.
Harry Potter quickly nodded, and he shuddered at the consequences of being lost in another's mind. The thought of being stuck in a foreign space for an indefinite period severely dampened any idea of attempting to navigate another mind.
The Hat tilted his pointed end towards Harry in recognition of acknowledgment. The Hat knew many a great witch or wizard who has lost themselves in the path of mind magics. He can only hope that the young Potter can master a few aspects of mind magic without losing himself. "Now, as I said previously, the first step in learning occlumency is to establish familiarity with your mind. We will be doing with a guided meditation. Instead of thought processes, you will be using your magic to guide you through your mind."
Harry tilted his head to the side in confusion; this seemed like mind navigation, the very action that The Hat warned him from trying without his approval. "Isn't this mind navigation, the one thing you very much spent the last several minutes warning me not to do?"
The Hat gave his customary chuckle. "Mr. Potter I warned you against navigating another person's mind. This is not ` 1really navigation in so far as developing a greater understanding of your mind. Unlike a foreign mind, your mind and magic will help you through the process. Why? Because quite simply, it is your mind. You cannot get lost in your mind. Although certain external factors can make you so, you trying to develop an understanding of your mind does not drive your mind to insanity.
"The meditation technique is pretty simple. Close your eyes and focus on a memory, the more recent the memory, the easier the process is. Now try focusing on your magic as you recall the memory, visualize yourself casting a spell inside your mind. Now, let the spell traverse through your mind. As you delve deeper into the memory, you would start to recall various sensations and thoughts you had at that moment. The greater degree of familiarity that you have with your mind, the greater the details that you would recall. You can then string the pieces of memories together and follow the magic. As you do, immerse yourself in the emotions and thoughts you felt then.
"Initially, you will lose track of time and you will break from your trance at a random time. I suggest having Dobby wake you up after a period when you meditate away from my presence. As you become more familiar, you can move in and out of that state freely and easily.
"The benefits of this exercise are quite numerous over the long run. You will have increased retention and processing capabilities. You will have greater control over your emotions. Your familiarity with your magic will increase over time, a topic for another time. Now, let us get started. First, pick a spell that would guide you through your memories."
Harry had the perfect spell to help him guide him through his memories, the Patronus Charm. What better spell to act as a guide than a guardian that wards off his worst fear? He took a minute to focus on the components of the spell and he sat down in an armchair nearby. He closed his eyes and recalled the events of last night. He called his magic and thought, Expecto Patronum.
A silver stag guided him through the confrontation he had with Ron, comforting Hermione, the dinner, the revelations, and until the moment he fell asleep. He felt a few emotions, but they felt dull. He heard a few thoughts, but they were whispers in the wind. He let the stag guide him further. He saw each event as he experienced them, the deeper he event, the less detail he could perceive.
He felt his magic reaching out and try to repair the blurred details, and certain details became clearer. He recalled the conversation with Death, confrontation with Voldemort, and the Battle of Hogwarts. He felt going deeper and deeper into his memories. The emotions and thoughts were less detailed, but his magic tried to unearth as much as he could. He went as far back as his eleventh birthday when he was snapped out his trance.
"Ah, Mr. Potter. Welcome back to the world of the living. How deep did you dive into your memories?"
He blinked owlishly for a few moments and it took a few moments to register that The Hat had questioned him. "Until my eleventh birthday. Though the deeper I dived, the less detail was able to gather. But my magic reached out to some of these memories and tried to clean the blurred memories. Certain memories became clearer, some remained obscured."
"Well Mr. Potter, you are progressing much faster than I initially thought. I assumed that you would just be able to dive into memories that were about 3 years back at most. I did not expect your magic to start refining your memories until another month or so into your meditation. You seem to have quite the aptitude to mind magics. This certainly pushes our timeline forward by quite a bit. Out of curiosity Mr. Potter, what spell did you use as your magical guide?"
Harry smiled, "The Patronus Charm. I could think of no other spell that could serve as the guide to my mind."
The Hat chuckled, "Wonderful selection Mr. Potter. A Patronus is a manifestation of all you hold dear. To use that spell to anchor your mind is truly innovative by your part."
Harry nodded and smiled at the ancient artifact. His foray into mind magics this time around has yielded much better results this time around. And I intend to make the best use of every possible opportunity thrown at me.
"Now Mr. Potter I advise you to at minimum practice that meditation once a day. I will be assessing your mind whenever we meet to garner when we can start constructing some occlumency shields. Is there anything else would you like to ask me?"
"I was wondering if you could teach a few of my friends some mind magic?"
"If you request me to do so, I am obliged to teach them. Is that all?"
"For now, yes."
"Well then Mr. Potter, until next time."
With that, Harry Potter left the Room of Requirement and had Dobby pop him over to the bathroom in his dorm. Would not want them to start wondering why I just disappeared out of their sight. Of course, he had Dobby check if there are any occupants. Would not want to appear inside a bathroom when Ron is dropping a deuce. No sir, hippogriff dung smells better than whatever Ron lets out.
His dormmates were still asleep when he entered the dorm. He quietly made his way to his bed and had Dobby wake him up once his dormmates were starting to wake up. He then resumed his meditation. This time he perceived a few more details from his mind than the last time. Dobby snapped him out of trance roughly an hour after he began. He went through his morning ablutions and got ready for breakfast. He went down to the common room, sat down on a loveseat next to the fireplace, and waited for his friends.
I might want to do something about Hermione's SPEW aspirations. She is right in that house-elves must be treated better but freeing them is a fate worse than death for them. I wonder if Neville can lend a hand. He was drawn out of his musings when the subject of his thoughts drifted down from the staircase. Harry smiled and patted the space next to him, "Morning Hermione. I was just waiting for you and Neville to head down for breakfast."
Hermione sat down next to him and they sat in companionable silence for a few moments. Hermione turned to Harry, and she spoke before her eyes betrayed her emotions. "I don't think I thanked you for what you did yesterday Harry. Thank you for being a great friend."
Harry placed his arm across her shoulders and drew her closer to him. Hermione leaned in closer. The one person who I was always comfortable with physical contact was Hermione. "That's what friends do Hermione; we stand up for each other. He was insulting your character and I can't just let him walk all over you. You are a great person and a witch and don't let anyone tell you otherwise."
Hermione sighed and smiled. That was so much like Harry, yet so much more. Everything about Harry yesterday was different. More confident, more eloquent, and more expressive than ever. They once again fell into silence, merely enjoying their moment early morning. Their moment was interrupted by a throat clear.
"Ah excuse me. I do apologize for interrupting your lovely moment there, but blimey I am hungry. You two do look comfy there. Mind snuggling with me next time Harry?"
Neville stood behind their loveseat sporting a cheeky grin. Hermione turned a light shade of red and Harry grimaced. Didn't even notice him coming down, the bugger has the gall to take the mickey out of me! I swear his newfound confidence is biting me in the arse!
"Sorry Neville, I only snuggle pretty, intelligent, brown, and curly-haired witches with chocolate brown eyes. Find your own cuddle buddy."
Before Neville could even respond, Hermione quipped back, "I head Malfoy might be needing one. Daddy took him away yesterday."
"Nah I rather eat hippogriff dung. Shall we go down already?"
With that, the three of them made their way down to the Great Hall. As they went down to the great hall, several gazes shifted towards them. Harry ignored the gazes and continued to walk down to the Great Hall. Hermione and Neville, less used to the looks of the masses, hesitated before they followed Harry. Neville looked slightly uncomfortable with all the attention. Hermione, being around Harry over the last two years, was somewhat used to the stares. Harry glanced back at his companions and sighed. Would not blame them for being uncomfortable, public attention can catch you off guard.
The trio made their way into the Great Hall and took their seats at the Gryffindor table. A few minutes into their breakfast, the youngest male of the Weasley family and Percy entered the Hall. The Gryffindor table quietened at their entrance, well aware of the events that transpired last night. The rest of the Great Hall were puzzled when the usually boisterous lions grew quiet. Harry drew his gaze to the head table and saw the inquisitive gazes of the professor's. McGonagall looked at him directly with narrowed eyes, and he shook his head in response.
Ron's face grew a startling shade of puce when he saw the individuals responsible for his plight. However, Percy jerked his arm and pulled him away from the entrance and seated him next to himself and the rest of the Gryffindor Prefects. The silence continued for a few minutes and the conversations slowly worked itself back to the table, except this time several students from other houses made their way to their Gryffindor friends to learn of the latest happenings.
Harry rolled his eyes and ignored everyone but his friends. Hermione occupied herself by going through the notes of the classes she missed, and Neville looked slightly troubled. Harry noticed the distracted look on Neville's face. "Ignore them. Being the center of attention means that people are going to talk about you until they decide otherwise. Worrying about what they think or say is not healthy for anyone."
Neville slowly nodded and went back to his meal. The three of them went about their breakfast and walked out of the Great Hall. Harry dragged the two of them to an empty classroom. "There is one other thing I forgot to mention yesterday. Dobby!"
With a snap, crackle, and pop, the eccentric shadow of Harry Potter made his entrance. Dressed in a navy-blue three-piece suit, midnight blue tie, a sky-blue fedora, and a pair of navy-blue dress shoes. Harry was amused by the look of confusion on Neville and Hermione and impressed by Dobby's Wardrobe. Beats the bright ensemble of socks he had last time. "Let me introduce to you, the one and only house-elf extraordinaire Dobby!"
With an elaborate bow, Dobby added, "Also elf to the Great Master Harry Potter sir!"
"Oi! How many times does it take me to get you to stop calling me that?"
"Great and Brave Master Harry Potter sir, you must have woken up from the wrong side of the bed today. Then again, you say this every time Dobby sees you, so you must be waking up from the wrong side every day. Poor Great and Durable Master Harry Potter sir! Dobby must make sure his master sleeps well. It would not be good for Master Harry Potter sir to be a Great and Grumpy Master Harry Potter sir, " with a sage-like nod of his head, he pulled a notepad and a fountain pen out of thin air and wrote a reminder for his new task. Harry's brow twitched at the ribbing he received from his elf.

Struck by the Killing Curse of Lord Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest, Harry Potter meets Death. Death provides him an opportunity. 

An opportunity that allows him to do more than survive, to finally live the life he has been deprived of. An opportunity that sends our protagonist back in time to the end of his second year. Rated M just in case.

Harry then blurted out his feelings in a word,"WHAT"

Harry digested his ,words and finally asked out in small stutter, "Y-You told for public, what about for you?"
Orion was expecting rejection but not that. He asked out Harry truthfully, "I didn't think for you to ask that."
Harry shrugged his shoulders and said , "Well vernon and petuina told everyone they met that I was a mean boy who beat up dudely and called everyone rude names. That my mother was a whore and father a drunk-"
"NONSENSE"-yelled out Ripdage and Blackfang.
"Lord and Lady potter were one of the greatest warriors I knew and Lady potter was the brightest witch of her generation and kind soul who even came to our aid during the war with Voldemort and had a eye for business like lord black."
Harry then spoke up breaking the tense environment ,"Thank you Ripdage. That means a lot to me. So I want to know about the truth as my parents wouldn't name Sirius as my godfather and most of all the reason for my benefit of doubt to House black is because of you." He said the last part while looking at Orion
"Huh!"
Harry explained his reasoning to the curious room, "You have took me out of there and the shown me about the wizarding world. Even the goblins seem to respect you."
Orion laughed at that and said , "Hahaha! Thank you Harry that means a lot to me. Now take the heirship of house potter and pervell. Repeat these words -I,hadrian james potter son of james charlus potter take the heirship of most ancient and noble house of potter/pervell"

Harry nodded seeing the grave face on Orion's face. Blackfang then said 
"Ripdage. I want you to call for your best healers to heal Heir Potter as it seems he is malnourished and has other injuries."
Ripdage nodded at that and called for someone in goblin language-Gobbledegook
Meanwhile Orion looked through the House Potter's Bussiness and said to Harry  "House Potter's business are doing well. Just invest in firebolt brooms like mine .Others will be done by you Harry as it is important you learn them" Orion put up his hand to stop Harry who seemed to have something to say, "I will help you learn little bro but not everything will be spoon fed in life."
Knock knock
Orion looked towards Blackfang who gave a nod back . He then yelled out "Come in."
A female goblin in 1950 s healer clothes came in."Greetings Lord Black, and Heir Potter. I am Albinook."

Orion then said ,"Albinook! I want you to check harry and provide the necessary treatment."
"Yes, Lord black .Please remove your clothes Heir Potter." replied the healer while looking towards Harry. Orion rolled his eyes at his embarrassment as he said - 
"Oh please! For them watching you naked is like watching a rabbit naked that means nothing"
After checking Harry with a few diagnostic spells Albinook swore in Goblin nature for some time and told the rest of room-
"Heir potter is malnourished with improperly healed bones  and brusies,no vaccines for any kind of disease both muggle and magical. There is fucking soul piece attached to his scar. Blood wards to his core and magical blocks. All of them could be cured except that scar without knowing what it is."
Orion then spoke up saying , "I think I know what it is"
All of them turned to Orion and He explained to them the story about his father and Voldemort's horcruxs-
Albinook shook her head as she said,"Unbelievable to think that mad man made those vile things, much less 7 of them"
Harry who was new to the magical world asked them "So will it be possible to heal me? "
"Yes, Harry . Goblins are the greatest healers, especially in terms of soul and blood magic"
Albinook nodded at the praise, "Obviously as Lord black said we will heal you . Come with me Heir potter."
Orion shook his head at the nervous kid. He soothingly said ,"Go harry they will heal you and Ripdage take the payment from Potter vaults"
Ripdage nodded at that and said, "Yes Lord Black"
Ripdage and Harry followed albinook to ritual room for healing him. After he saw that Harry went out leaving Him and Black fang back, He said out loud to Blackfang,-
"Black fang. I believe one of Voldemort's horcrux is Helga Hufflepuffs cup and it is inside the lestrange vault."
Blackfang shot to his feet in anger as they were forbidden to be held in Gringotts ,"WHAT?"
Orion then said "I am afraid so my friend."
"We have to inform the bank director and king Ragnorock immediately"

Chapter 10 – Halloween

 

Weeks passed, and while nothing precisely changed, everything was slightly better for Harry. His schoolwork improved, though it was in no way spectacular (to Hermione's chagrin). But he was no longer achingly behind his classmates, except in Latin. His study sessions with Snape weren't as awful as Harry had suspected. Snape was unfailingly grim and critical – Harry only knew he'd done well if the insults were weak. But in a way it was a bit like Hermione's condescension – it was just the way they were, and it was easier not to take offense. Still, Harry knew he wasn't Snape's favourite person, and some of the insults could have real bite, and Snape had a tendency to call him "boy", which Harry hated with a passion. Nonetheless, he was getting along in Latin.

Art was all right, too. Harry didn't know anything about art, and Trelawney wasn't likely to teach him, but he didn't mind messing around with paints or ceramics or whatever Trelawney had them working on. Nothing he made ever looked like anything, but Trelawney didn't care, so Harry did whatever he felt like – mostly, he liked using different colours. It was stupid, but if he had to spend a few hours a week doing it, why not do what we wanted, whatever it was?

His relations with his Housemates had also improved marginally. Hermione did most of his talking for him, which was just as well, because otherwise he'd have little to say. But the Gryffindor boys had become more forgiving of his – whatever – after he'd won their match against Hufflepuff. Well, Longbottom didn't seem to particularly care, but he went along with the others. Harry thought he was a sort of mascot to them now – in a way, just like Hermione – someone they didn't particularly like but who was one of them, conferring benefits on them. So if someone from another House said something about Harry, they'd get upset, as if only they were allowed to wonder why he was still so hostile, or where he came from, or how he got so good at football. Harry knew they'd noticed that he never changed in front of any of them, but that was part of their new attitude as well – they respected his privacy, never saying a word about him waiting for them to leave before he changed, or about him getting up early to shower. They wondered about it, but could only conclude that it was one of Potter's odd quirks, totally mysterious in origin, but best not to challenge.

Malfoy's hostility continued unabated – he sneered at Harry any chance he got, mocked him when he didn't know the answers in class (Harry hadn't expected the poncey little snob to be so smart, especially given how much he called Hermione a know-it-all). He insinuated often that Harry was poor and made unflattering remarks about what Harry and Hermione were getting up to. Harry found all of this juvenile, and while he understood that Malfoy was doing his damnedest to be a bastard, he usually ignored it without a second thought. So things were stable, and calm.

Until Halloween.

A few days before Halloween, Harry noticed people staring at him and whispering. At first he was actually pleased, because the difference meant that people had stopped staring at him for a long time. But it didn't stop – it only increased. Harry had no idea what was going on.

Finally, he asked Hermione. "What's going on?"

"I don't know what you mean," she said, looking away.

"People are acting weird. They're staring at me. Even you've been looking at me funny."

Hermione looked nervous. "It's just – you've made it very clear that certain things are private, and that privacy is important to you. I didn't want to intrude on that."

Harry was utterly perplexed. "What? How would you be intruding? I don't understand, Hermione."

Her eyes got big and wide, and she opened and shut her mouth several times. "I really don't get you sometimes, Harry. You make the biggest deal out of the stupidest things, yelling at me and never telling me anything about you, even though I try so hard to be a good friend to you – and now – and this – and you act like nothing's wrong, like you always do – and you expect me to – I didn't want to hurt you by talking about it and now you pretend it's nothing!" Both upset and infuriated with Harry, Hermione wiped roughly at her eyes and then stood up, huffing out of the common room.

Harry was gobsmacked. He had no idea that Hermione had wanted him to – share things with her. Why would she? He thought they'd been getting along well. And he still didn't know what this newest issue was.

She'd said she didn't want to hurt him by talking about it. Harry could think of one person who wouldn't care if he hurt Harry.

He went to find Draco Malfoy.

Draco left Uncle Severus's office feeling slightly disturbed. It was as he, and everybody else in the school, had concluded. He knew it – he just wanted confirmation. It was horrible to think about. He'd made jokes about it so many times before – or not jokes, exactly, but it had been a story they told one another, along with the one about the babysitter who received threatening phone calls, only to realize at the last minute that he was ringing from inside the house – except they'd also known this one was true.

Another piece of the Potter puzzle, but it wasn't satisfying at all.

"Malfoy!" called out the last voice he wanted to hear right now, and he stopped in his tracks and turned around.

"Potter," he said, without his usual vehemence. Potter had been driving him mad, acting like Draco was something he'd peeled off the bottom of his shoe, but after speaking to Uncle Severus, Draco couldn't summon up the energy to wind up Potter.

Potter didn't seem to notice. "Look Malfoy, I know something's going on. Everybody's – looking at me funny. You have to tell me." He glared at Draco for good measure.

Draco struggled to regain his usual composure. "Why don't you ask that Granger girl? She fancies herself the font of all knowledge, doesn't she?"

"Hermione – she wouldn't talk about it. Got all huffy about something, and said she didn't want to – to hurt me." Potter hurried on, looking uncomfortable. "And I know that won't bother you."

Christ, thought Draco. Was everybody too scared of Potter to say anything to his face? He felt a sudden loathing for every single person at Hogwarts, forcing Potter to come to Draco, of all people.

"Please, Malfoy," said Potter, looking like it strained his very soul to say the words.

Draco realized briefly that this could be useful – he had power over Potter right now – he could make Potter do anything. He then cursed himself for the string of dirty images that crossed his mind. Sometimes he thought he was getting gayer by the second. Could he offer Potter information in exchange for – no! No! He didn't want that from Potter! Besides, Potter would probably beat him to a bloody pulp.

Besides, Draco thought, sobering, this wasn't really the type of thing that ought to be sold like that, for a laugh.

Potter was waiting, showing more emotion on his face than Draco had ever seen him do.

"It's – everybody knows, Potter."

The colour drained from Potter's face. "What?" he said hoarsely.

"We've all figured out who your parents are. Were." Draco watched him closely, but Potter obviously hadn't been expecting that. He shook his head as if to clear it and stared in Draco in confusion.

"Wait – what? My parents?"

"Yes," said Draco. "James and Lily Potter, right?"

"Right," said Potter warily.

"It took us a while, but people started making the connection a few days ago. Because of – you know."

If anything, Potter looked even more confused. "People here have heard of my parents? I mean, I know they were students here, but – "

Draco felt like he'd entered the twilight zone. "Well, yes, but they've become well known because of…how they died." It was markedly uncomfortable, talking to someone about his dead parents.

"How did you know my parents were dead?" asked Potter. Then he seemed to replay what Draco had said to himself. "What do you mean, how they died? They were in a smash-up, there was – someone was drunk. It happens all the time," said Potter, looking strained.

Draco felt like the bottom of his stomach had dropped out. Did he not know? He swallowed. "Who – who told you that?" he whispered.

"My – " Potter stopped whatever he was going to say. "Is it – not true?"

Draco looked down at the carpet, and shook his head. Good God. How could he be the one to tell Potter how his parents had really died? It was horrible! He felt burning shame for all the times he'd told the story to younger students to scare them on Halloween, never realizing so clearly that it had affected somebody real. He felt anger at Potter for putting him in this position, and anger at whoever out there ought to have done this, and didn't, someone who cared about Potter and who Potter cared about.

"Malfoy," said Potter urgently, stepping close, his eyes bright and intense, "you have to tell me. Please."

Draco looked away again, but told him. "It was Tom Riddle, the Headmaster before Dumbledore. The Potters – your parents, they were trying to get him sacked, to replace him with Dumbledore. Apparently, they accused him of a number of things, and he objected, but it turns out Tom Riddle was – totally insane. On Halloween in 1981 he came to their home and he – he murdered them."

He looked up. For a moment, Potter had looked absolutely gutted, but then he schooled his expression so that it showed no emotion at all, the face he wore most of the time.

"How?" he asked simply.

Draco struggled. It was horrible, but Potter could find out the details easily in the library. "With a knife. He – it was – " He didn't finish, didn't tell Potter that it had been some sort of ritual. He didn't tell Potter that it had apparently taken James Potter seven hours to die, and Lily even longer. He didn't tell him about how he had tortured them, carving them to bits, displaying their entrails and carcasses. He couldn't. "You were there," Draco told him. "He gave you that scar," Draco gestured to Potter's forehead, "the lightning bolt." Riddle had disappeared, been long gone by the time Dumbledore had shown up and contacted the police, but Draco didn't tell Potter this either.

Potter looked a bit pale, but otherwise completely normal. He nodded. "Thank you for telling me, Malfoy."

Potter walked off, leaving Draco alone in the dungeons. Draco's hands were shaking and he was sweating and his nervous tension slowly began to ease.

"You're fine, Draco," said Uncle Severus softly from behind him. Draco wondered how long he'd been hiding in the shadows.

"I," he couldn't get the words out, to say how disturbed he felt right now. Sick, and sad, and angry.

"You were right to tell him. He asked you to," said Uncle Severus, putting a hand on Draco's shoulder. Draco leaned in to him, needing the support.

"Did you know he didn't know?" he asked, his voice muffled slightly by Uncle Severus's vest.

"No. But I should have guessed," said Uncle Severus grimly.

He held Draco slightly tighter – physical affection uncommon but not unheard of for them – and Draco wondered who was going to comfort Harry.

Harry walked as far as he could, unseeing, until he stumbled over a suit of armour in an empty corridor. He paced in circles, his blood thrumming through his body, his hands clenching and unclenching.

His parents had been murdered, horribly murdered.

Today, fourteen years ago. And everybody knew – everybody.

He felt betrayed, somehow, that everybody else could know something so personal, and he had to find out from Draco Malfoy, how his own parents had died.

Why was he so surprised that Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia had lied to him? But why had they lied to him? Had they been waiting to spring it on him at some particularly cruel moment? Had they decided to keep the truth from him in one small moment of compassion?

He remembered, then, something Vernon had said to him once, something that he'd never thought much about because he hadn't understood it, hadn't been able to connect it to anything.

It was the summer he was eleven, the last summer before he was sent to St. Brutus's. Vernon had been struggling to get a reaction out of Harry all day, and finally when he started saying nasty things about his mother, Harry had shouted back at him, in a rage, and threatened to kill him if he didn't stop. He'd had no thought then of actually doing it, it was said in anger, but Vernon had used this as an excuse to attack Harry, punching him brutally in the face several times before picking him up by his shirt and throwing him into the kitchen table. Harry had struggled up and tried to run through the kitchen, but Vernon grabbed him and threw him against the cabinets, saying that Harry's mother had always liked it rough. Harry found himself with a kitchen knife in his hand and he'd launched himself at Vernon with it. He didn't know the first thing about fighting with knives, though he'd since learned, and had got a few lucky cuts in during the ensuing struggle. Vernon – a big man by any standards, let alone compared to a skinny eleven-year-old – finally threw him off. "You're just like him," Vernon had spit. "Your parents must be rolling in their graves. Fucking mad, you are!" He'd picked up the telephone to ring the police, and Harry, in a panic as he realized how much he'd wanted to kill his uncle, ran out of the kitchen and out of the house, grabbing Vernon's wallet on the way.

He'd never given it too much thought before – it wasn't the last time he'd thought about killing Uncle Vernon – and he'd never given much credit to the thought that his parents wouldn't want him defending himself – at least that's how he liked to see it.

Harry punched the wall savagely, as hard as he could, in an effort to stop the next thought. He punched it again, wincing at the pain, and slid to the ground, tucking his knees into his chest.

He'd been – he was – just like Tom Riddle, the man who'd murdered his parents. Violent, criminal, mad. Uncle Vernon was right about him. A little freak who shouldn't allowed around decent folk. He belonged at St. Brutus's.

Harry squeezed his eyes shut. He tried to control his breathing. He wouldn't cry. He couldn't. He imagined his mental cell, metal and grey. He felt a little colder, like he always did when he imagined it. He counted to one hundred, and then two hundred.

At two hundred twenty seven, a loud "mrrrrooww" interrupted him.

He looked up. It was that cat, the caretaker's cat, Mrs Norris. Hermione had pointed her out – said she was unfriendly and scratched anyone who tried to touch her. She even hissed at passing students.

But now she was rubbing up against his legs, leaving hairs all over his black trousers.

"Get away from me," he hissed at her, but she ignored him, rubbing more insistently against his legs.

Finally he lowered them and she crawled into his lap, purring loudly. Tentatively, he reached out to pet her, and she put up no resistance. She was warm, and soft, and her body seemed to curve under his hand. She made little noises of pleasure when he did something she liked, or reached up to rub the side of her face against his. He concentrated on learning the right way to pet her – she demanded it.

Harry didn't return to the Gryffindor dormitory until the sun started to rise.
