The frenetic battle continued as both sides incurred damage. Roshaw carefully fired his hand cannon at the helmets of his remaining attackers. Everyone knew this, but their loadout was limited. Ketis knew that if she didn't join the fight, all of her comrades would die without achieving any result!
However, her armor sustained severe damage after being hit by Roshaw's hand cannon at close range. Cracked armor plating and failing components marred her Rising Red Dragon's abdomen. Combined with all of the other damage her suit had already incurred, her mobility and protection was no longer as good as before.

Though she eagerly wanted to charge forward to assail the Grand Protector with her sword, she eventually settled for pulling out her compact laser pistol and firing it at the pirate lord at its highest power setting!
The second-class laser pistol immediately attracted Roshaw's attention as a powerful laser beam vaporized a portion of his chest armor!
"Insolent!" He roared and ignored the remaining survivors in order to take out Ketis!

Before he fired, Ketis turned her damaged bulk to the side in order to let her side armor take the brunt of the blow. Plating shattered and delicate components blew up under the force of the attack!
"Ahh!" Ketis shrieked in pain. Though the inner layer of her armor managed to protect her arm, the impact still pushed her backwards.
She fired back with another full-powered shot. This time, she managed to hit the pirate lord's already-damaged faceplate.
The attack was so alarming to Roshaw that he quickly aborted his attack and switched his helmet to full-combat mode. Only a vague snake-headed visage faced the Mirror Raiders which looked ready to sink its fangs into their flesh!
The gear owned by the pirate leader of a great pirate group was not comparable to the Mirror Raiders! As the now-exposed Larkinson clansmen spread around Roshaw and tried to attack him from multiple angles, the great enemy ignored their attacks and focused solely on killing the greatest threat, which was Ketis!

[Where... Where am I...]
Ashlynn is awoken to a scene of a shadowy world. Its her father's old house, back in her old life. She looks behind her, but there is nothing but smoke. A car can be heard coming.
[1970s Ford Bronco¹... just like mom's..!]
The car stops in front of the house. Out from the driver side comes a nineteen-twenty year old woman. The woman has blonde hair, clear blue eyes, and bright red lips.
[Am I seeing that day again? But why?]
The woman marches right up to the house, rings the doorbell and then waits. Tapping her foot rapidly while waiting. After several minutes a gruff, late twenties looking tall man with a large beard and brown eyes comes out. The two argue for a couple minutes, the man looking exasperated and the woman getting angrier and angrier the longer the conversation lasts. Eventually the conversation explodes, and the woman angrily marches back to the car. A minute later a commotion happens in the car, with a five year old kid with a backpack coming out of the car, slamming the door.
[Ah.. I remember, that woman didn't want to come with me as I met my father for the first time in my life. I felt so betrayed that day...]
The kid, no, Alex begrudgingly walks up the steps to the man, stopping half-way through to look back at the car where the woman was, only to see her to start to leave. Alex starts to rush back, running down the stairs but doesn't reach in time. He reaches the pavement only to have her already down the road, turning away from the block. 
Suddenly Ashlynn is looking through the eyes of Alex, as he stares down the road. He catches a glimpse of her before she disappears, only its not Alex's mother, its Katrina.
[Mother?!]
The scene shifts. Now in the torture chamber Ashlynn was in before she fell unconscious. Another Ashlynn is on the chair in the center of the room. Slowly symbols start to appear above the other Ashlynn's skin. The Sith symbols for Passion, power, strength, victory all appear with electric currents connecting them all. Slowly the symbols start to glow. From a Dark red, to a glowing yellow they slowly start to creep up as if the symbols were a hot iron. They start to creep down slowly, almost reaching her skin. 
[Hot... burning hot...]
Unknown as to when, Ashlynn's perspective is now in the chair. Her body in this shadowy world and her mind becoming one. She can see the symbols floating just above her skin, she can feel the heat radiating from them. They attempt to complete the final step and go into Ashlynn's skin.
[HOOTT! Aaaaaaagh!]
But they are rebounded, unable to merge with her. The lightning network, seemingly upset over the failed merging, separates from the network of symbols and attempts to invade her eyes. Her neural network lights up, pain wracking her eyes, head and body. And then the lightning disappears, and the whole world goes black.

Ashlynn's eyes shoot open. The beautiful gray tainted by a tiny shade of yellowish red and flickering with purple lightning. She jumps out of bed.
[Where am I?! Where's Mom? Where's...]
Ashlynn's eyes start to wander. She is in a tiny room, her hands able to reach the ceiling if she tiptoes. The room is narrow, and sparsely decorated. Only a metal bed with a dirty mattress, a badly kept carpet, and a mirror with cracks running through the whole surface. A flickering light built into the ceiling above. 
[Wait..]
The prior evening's activities flares back from obscurity. The collaring, and the.. Branding. 
[They... How Dare they?!] Ashlynn's anger flares. And she takes off her shirt, reaching to her back. It takes her a minute but she eventually feels the burnt, mangled flesh. She turns her back to the mirror, the Brand in full view. A circle with the letter V inside reaching the circle. In the middle of the V is a mini empire symbol, symbolizing the family's historical standing with the empire despite not having force-sensitives inside their family. Tracing over the symbols, Ashlynn's eyes flare with noticeable traces of lightning.
[Utter barbarians this family... Wait, Lightning?]
Ashlynn hurriedly turns around, drawing close to the mirror and inspects her eyes. There are faint traces of lightning flickering in her eyes alongside a yellowish red tone tainting the outer bits of her Sclera².
[Is the force already showing? But I have not at all used the force during my time in this universe as far as I can recall. In fact, when I tried around a year ago, no matter how hard I tried, I could not feel any connection to the force. I postured over a mirror for a minute trying to get something to happen...]
Ashlynn blushes, and shakes her head in an attempt to get the embarrassing thought out of her head. She leans in again, focusing on the lightning visible in her eyes and tries to make it move. Nothing happens. She tries again, focusing harder... And the lightning refuses to budge. She focuses extra hard, her face turning red in the process... and nothing. 
"haaah... this is hard..." she mutters, blinking and massaging her neck. 
[One more try...]
She leans back into the mirror, studying her eye only to notice the lightning alongside the yellowish-red tone are gone. 
"What?!" Ashlynn screams in shock.
[Are they really gone? My one tiny glimpse of space magic gone in a blink?! Damn it!!]
*Shiink*
The door opens just as Ashlynn leans again to the mirror. Leena comes into the room with a myriad of various things such as a bowl, a spoon, multiple rags, a new set of clothes, etc.
"Ashlynn!" Yells Leena.
*Crash* Leena drops everything she has onto the floor and rushes to Ashlynn, dragging her into a hug. After a minute of hugging Leena turns Ashlynn around, and exclaims,
"How are you feeling? Is there any burns or bruises? Is there-"
"I'm fine." Ashlynn assures, cutting off Leena. "Or, I think I am. Besides that, what happened? How long have I been asleep? Where's Mother?"
"Your Mother is working, but first, the Young Master would likely want to speak with you." answers Leena, then continues, "I mean Geez, he's been antsy all week about you waking up. If he was so worried, he shouldn't have thought to brand a FIVE YEAR OLD CHILD!" 
"The Young Master wants to see me?" exclaims the surprised Ashlynn.
[I mean, I remember something about the Young Master before I fell unconscious... But the whole event is a little fuzzy...]
Ashlynn shivers, a thought appearing in her head,
[Except the burning. I can still... feel that part...]
"Well... I should probably go see the Young Master... But.. Before that... can I go put on my shirt..?" mutters Ashlynn to Leena, pointing to her shirt on the floor.

He touched his own face in disbelief.

"This…is me?"

He was surprised to see that his character's appearance looked identical to his real-life appearance! The similarities were uncanny!

After many, many minutes of waiting inside the character creation room which was just an empty room with a large mirror, and barely needing to do anything himself, Xiao Yun has finally finished his character creation and was ready to begin his first journey in a virtual world.

30 seconds passed by in a flash when Xiao Yun was in a thinking mindset trying to comprehend the things he saw during the character creation such as Skill Tree and Bloodline.

Soon, a bright white light bathed Xiao Yun's figure, blinding his view and causing him to disappear from the empty room.

The next time he would open his eyes, an unfamiliar scenery of some village would greet his view.

"This is…"

Xiao Yun looked around with curiosity, and the first thing he noticed was how close the clouds in the sky seemed to him, looking almost reachable if he had a ladder.

Next, he would notice the way his character felt, and unbelievably, it felt like his real body in the real world!

His sense of smell, touch, taste— all of his senses were working so flawlessly that even he wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this game and in real life!

The next thing he would notice was the people; it was crowded as hell.

Never in his life has he seen so many people in one place let alone being within the crowd.

There were at least a thousand people here, and being around this many people made Xiao Yun uncomfortable at heart.

And because of the discomfort, it did not take long for him to decide to leave his spot to find a quieter place despite not knowing where to go, so he wandered around this village-like place.

The place was vast and open, without any walls or blockade in sight. Both large and small buildings made of wood were scattered around, and despite walking for many minutes, Xiao Yun was unable to find a place in this large area where the population was not so big.

It was only until he reached the outer circle of the island where he could see and touch the gigantic wall that separated him and the other side could he feel at ease.
Here, at the outer circle, there were only a dozen people at most, and a merchant who seemed to be selling bottles filled with colorful bottles by the walls.

Xiao Yun, not knowing what he should be doing, decided to go speak to the merchant by the walls for information.

"Hello, how may I help you?"

The young lady behind the cart with the colorful bottles neatly displayed asked him when he got close enough.

"I am new here, and I would like to get some advice," he said.

"Oh, then you're not here to buy my potions?"

The cheerful expression on the young lady turned into disappointment.

"These colorful bottles are called potions?" he asked, seemingly interested in anything that was colorful.

"Yes! I have both health and mana potion if you wish to buy some! They will greatly assist you in your journey outside these walls!" she said with anticipation in her voice, hoping that he'd buy some after hearing her words.

"How much do you want for one?" Xiao Yun asked.

"10 copper for health potions and 20 copper for mana potions!"

"10 copper…how much is that?" he asked.

"Eh?"

The young lady looked at him with a weird expression.

"I just started, so I do not have anything on me…" he then said.

"Is that so…"

"Then how about this? You can help me gather some ingredients and I'll make some potions for you in return. How does that sound?"

"But I came here for information..."

"I'll also tell you all that I know if you help me!"

Xiao Yun thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Okay. What do you want me to gather, and where is it?"

"I just need 10 Restoration Seed. You can find them right outside the east gate."

Although he didn't really need to do all this extra work for information he could probably get from asking someone else, the potions had piqued his interest, and he wanted one for himself.

"Okay, I'll be back," he said.

Xiao Yun was adopted by a modern-day assassin when he was a mere toddler, which lead him to grow up in an environment that was dyed in black and red.

After his mother that was also his master died, Xiao Yun has to decide for himself what he wants to do with life.

Will he continue his mother’s legacy as an assassin, or will he try to blend in with the rest of the world, where the majority also live their other lives in virtual worlds?

Hana suddenly turned around and seriously scrutinized Shiro as she suddenly realized about something. It made Shiro felt extremely restless with the penetrating gaze; he felt like his fur had been shaved off, leaving him bare and disgraced.

[Why did Mom look at me so seriously, this time? Is it because I smell bad? I've made sure I washed thoroughly just now..] 

Shiro turned to his own tail and consciously sniffed it again. Hana was the one who smeared smelly things on him before. 

[Or is it something I say which had offended Mom?]

"Oh yes, Shi-chan, you're saying you're a Glass Mirror fox? What sort of fox is that? I thought you're a giant overfed aardwolf. You know, the one who ate bugs and lived in the Savannah." Hana chuckled mirthfully. "And why did you have 'mirror' in your name?"

She had not known Shiro's species before. Even when she heard about it, she still had never come across the term. The name was quite cool sounding.

 Shiro nearly fell down from hearing what the Aunty was asking as three black lines appeared on his forehead. [Since when my name got any glass or mirror?! And what are glass and mirror?!]

With an exasperated expression, Shiro tried to calm himself and smiled awkwardly. He was still getting used to the aunty's trash talking and was trying to focus his thoughts. A faint mocking laughter can be heard at the side, coming from the little black snake, which added to Shiro's dismay.

[Ehem, it's Glacier Mirage Fox, Mom. Glacier mirage foxes had the ability to manipulate ice and ice-related vapors.] Shiro shook his fur slightly. They puffed up slightly as tiny whitish glittering particles emitted from each end. Upon closer inspection, the tiny particles were tiny ice crystals imbued with spiritual energy. 
 
[Mom, look up.] 
 
After he explained to Hana, he continuously emitted an intense chilly air from his body. The air moved upwards and enlarged into the shape of a translucent shiny concave. As the sun shone upon the chilly 'air', the concave undulated slightly. Suddenly, the bare sky had been covered with an image of a realistic tree canopy; a carbon copy of the rainforest nearby.
 
"Woahhhh! So OP! So cool! It's a camouflage technique!" To a plebeian like Hana, it was a grand magic show. With this, her worry was reduced greatly. The scenery in the sky was too open as their abode lay in the center without a single cover. What if some other strong animals came over? She had read enough novels about OP divine beasts wreaking havoc just simply because they didn't have better things to do and had found a conspicuous target to toy with.
 
[That was why, no outsiders ever seen us.] He talked animatedly before his voice in Hana's mind trailed off. Hana could sense his changing mood into a broody one with solemnness, sadness, anger, confusion; all mixed together.
 
Shiro wasn't willing to continue any further as he looked away with dispirited eyes.
 
Hana sighed internally as she rubbed Shiro's head. She immediately changed the topic as she walked forward and squatted down near a large crumply-like shriveled 'cloth', "Is this your molted skin, Ku-chan? Can I have it?" She held it with both hands and used all of her strength to flap it to check the real size and length. Being properly flapped, the skin was tens of meters longs, with burns and gashes at some parts. However, most of it was intact and in decent condition. It was really big and long! Just like a huge roll of unique-textured cloth!
 
Kuro was speechless for a second, but manage to answer, "Sure, Mommy."
 
The aunty took out the clawknife and tried to cut the shriveled skin a little. However, it only left a faint white trace. She deflated while sighing. She then tried to stretch the material with all she got. It was actually quite pliable. 

[A pity... If only I could cut it, I could even turn all this into a simple hammock with leftover materials to turn into swimsuits, innerwear or something...] The aunty sighed again dispiritedly.
 
Kuro chuckled amusingly while observing his mommy's antics. [Mommy, allow me. Kuro slithered towards Hana's arm which held the knife and spit his saliva over it. Smear it well before trying again.]

Hana hesitantly used two fingers and cautiously smeared Kuro's spit on both sides of the blade. The aunty then tried the same thing again on the shriveled skin and found that she managed to cut the material easily this time! Her eyes shone with delight in the midst of her pets' confusion. She then bundled up the shriveled skin happily and put them aside. She could already envision her next project!

A few moments later, the aunty started to twist her waist, bend down and touch her toes and twirl her arms seriously. She then cracked her neck left and right and stretched her hamstring in a most exaggerated manner. She did the series of motion trice in front of her pets, who were currently so confused, their mouths were agape, feeling speechless yet again. Once the aunty was done, she made a satisfied nod and started walking to a partially disintegrated uprooted timber as large as three adults holding hands together not too far away from her pets. She positioned herself well and pushed the large timber with all seriousness! 

"Urghh! Urghh!" The aunty's not-so-nice grunting voice resounded loudly.
 
Kuro and Shiro looked at each other in exasperation with a big question mark in their mind. 
 
[What are you doing this time, Mommy?] They asked together with synchronization; a tinge of helplessness in their telepathic-voices with their Mom's random antics.
 
[Nothing. You asked me to gauge my own strength before. Now, I'm just testing my strength while clearing the place a little. I want to make a nice straight path from our house to the river. Don't worry about it, leave everything to me!] Hana answered confidently in between her huffing and puffing. She planned earlier to show off a little to her pets. The big shattered tree trunk was not moving at all. Hana struggled with all her might until her face turned red. 

Two minutes later, her pets sweated as they saw she slipped and banged her forehead on the tree in front of her. The aunty stood up with a red swollen forehead, and an extra-aggrieved look. 

"You guys tricked me. You said Mommy should've gotten stronger." She rubbed her forehead while puffing her cheek. "I thought I've become as strong as Goku(1)." Her voice trailed off as it turned into embarrassment. 

Now her whole face had turned red like a melon when she thought about it. [To think that I finally had a chance for posturing in front of the kids…]
 
Both kids were speechless and nearly fell!
 
Their mommy had really overestimated her own progress. Although she felt very healthy and brimming with power, her previous sloth-like nature had made her actual strength to already hovered below average of a normal woman. At this moment, her constitution had only reached the condition and strength of slightly above a healthy male at his prime age. 

Instead, her soul had undergone a qualitative change altogether; becoming more tangible within her, with vestiges of soft multicolored light surrounding it. Her soul's strength had soared to five times more than a normal human being. It was even stronger than some of the average low-leveled spiritual beasts. However, only Kuro could directly see the progress of her soul. Even her other pets were unable to. Unfortunately, this level of soul strength was thousands of miles apart from Kuro's prowess, but Kuro could see their mommy's potential in this area.

She squatted down dejectedly while drawing circle after circle with her index finger, exhibiting an extremely pitiful sight...

After all the drama, the small family of three worked together until late into the evening. Since the shade of the arboreal trees were nonexistent on their work ground, they had ample amount of sunlight to complete their work on clearing the surrounding.
 
At the end of the day, just before the sun disappeared from the horizon, the aunty did achieve her goal; a cleared up location surrounding her naturally elevated dwelling, although not the way she imagined (Author: Not so soon Hana, you've just started, can't let you be so OP haha). 

She had even managed to lay down a tiny path paved with stones directly from her house to her favorite spot beside the stream. The stones were from the shattered boulders in the vicinity, carved by herself and Shiro into pretty flat grayish steps, arranged loosely like an aesthetically pleasing mosaic. The other large debris were segregated according to their type. Most of the tree barks were further cut into large stakes and were made into a loose 'fence', encircling the open area, just like Shiro's little garden beside the stream. The only difference was, it was much larger in space and were loosely placed at the boundary of the destruction as 'territory marks' rather than a barricade to keep animals away. The leftovers were placed at a corner of their 'land' to dry before they will be used as firewood perpetually. From today's work, she realized how big a difference her strength and stamina had been. It wasn't as exaggerated as her favorite Saiyan idol, but at least she felt that she was as strong as The Rock! Well, minus all the unsavory bulging abs. It was a pleasant surprise for her. At least she could carry a few boulders and a bundle of bamboo poles on her shoulder with ease now; more importantly, minus the back pain.
 
The trio returned to their cave dwelling with a light gait on their steps, with one lady posturing her awesomeness with carrying a bundle of bamboo poles on her shoulder!!!

Apprehension weighed heavy through the room as worried eyes traveled back and forth between the now draining tub and Raven as she unloaded her drug store shopping bag. With every drop of water that passed the drain and every centimeter the water dropped, Jos's condition worsened. Her pale skin took on a slight blue tent as her breathing became more labored. 
Russ felt his chest seize with panic as Jos's eyes rolled back in her head and her body began to shake violently. "Raven! Raven!" He yelled as he held Jos's writhing body tighter against his. 
Raven glanced over but didn't slow her hands. She fought hard not to show her own worry and concern for one of her oldest and dearest friends. "It's okay, just keep holding her. Don't let her hurt herself. I'm almost ready." Once she had all the items separated out and nodded to Orion and Arei. "Do either of you have anything of the ocean with you?" She asked them hopefully then added, "Or are any of your tattoos directly linked to the ocean or your father?"
Arei and Orion nodded in unison, each lifting their shirts to reveal their personal banding. Orion had a large bear head set inside a drawn bow and on either side of it was matching tridents standing out from the surrounding tribal designs. Arei's branding sat in the exact same place as Orion's, atop his heart. His was dual horse heads facing each other, one of the sea, with a long fish like body and the other with wings that curved around meeting the fish like body and completing a circle. the large trident sat above their heads and its long shaft separated the stallions. His too was encircled by intricate tribal designs all etched into the smooth tanned skin overlaying massive, strong muscles. 
Raven's eyes widened in a mix of appreciation and surprise. "Well... that will do…" One side of her mouth curved up as she continued mixing her purchased items in separate bowls. "I'm sure if the spell itself doesn't snap her out of this, you two will." Her eyes sparkled mischievously as her eyes traveled over each of their lengths noting the various patterns inked into each of their skin along the bases of their wide necks, the bared skin exposed by their short sleeves, and each of their currently exposed chests and stomachs. Her smile widened as her eyes lowered and she noticed ink through the holes in Arei's jeans and the numerous patterns covering all of Orion's bared calves and legs. "You guys are covered in tattoos? Are they all linked to the sea and ocean?" She asked a spark of excitement colored her words.
Orion nodded, "Yes, they each depict different aspects of our lives. We get new ones with each journey we complete." 
Arei laughed and chimed in, "We are pretty old ya know... We had to get a bit creative in... places..." He grinned and winked at her as he dipped the waist band of his jeans down with the other hand. 
Raven's eyes widened and she shook her head. "Well one thing is sure. She has good tastes..." She clucked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. "I'm going to need you guys to... expose... any areas that may have symbols linking to the ocean or sea. I'm going to use them to help draw power." Her smile fell and expression turned more serious as she focused on the supplies before her. "I'll admit, I was a little worried whether this would be enough." She lifted a shell trinket from the jewelry section of the drug store. Setting it to the side she finished with the various herbs and oils separated out into several different bowls and grabbed the sharpie from the bag on the bed giving Shelly a comforting half smile as she did so. She then hurried to the mirror beside the large jacuzzi tub.
Orion was the first to finish stripping down to a pair of short, dark navy boxer briefs. "What now?" He asked. 
Arei glanced over at his brother, a light blush creeping up his neck. "This probably wasn't the best time to go commando…" He laughed when the wolf on the bed rolled her eyes and the boy in the tub gave him the worst of looks. He smiled and shrugged his shoulders, "What can I say, it's hard getting too much squeezed into the jeans..." He laughed when the wolf shook her head and turned away. 
Raven glanced over her shoulder as she drew a large sigil on the mirror. "As tight as they are, I'm sure you won't have any problems cupping the contents in one palm." 
Arei arched a brow at her, "Is that a dick joke? Are we making dick jokes right now? Maybe you should go put yours on and we'll compare sizes." he said as he unbuttoned his fashionably faded black jeans. He pulled down the zipper suggestively, teasing her. 
Raven rolled her eyes into the mirror as she continued working. "Only if I get to use it on you after." 
Arei let go of his fly and through his hands up in surrender, "Alright, alright! I'll not press you." His grin widened as he shot Orion a glint. "But Ry may take you up on the offer later." 
"Fuck off Arei! Can't you ever be serious." Orion asked walking closer to the tub and cupping a hand over Russ's tense shoulder. 
Arei snorted turning away from everyone's eyes as he dropped his pants to the ground. "I am being serious. I bet it would tickle all your fancies... may even open up a whole new world of adventures." He held out a hand, his tight ass cheeks clenching involuntarily against the cool breeze of the AC unit. "Could you toss me a towel while you're just standing there?" He caught the wolf's shy eyes gazing over at him from heavily veiled lashes. He turned his hips slightly farther away from her, cupping himself the best he could, and flicked the extended hand toward her. "Just turn your cute fluffy head that way, this is no sight for a child." He stuck his tongue out at her teasingly, "Just proves my point about dogs and cats being pervs."  
Orion huffed, "She's hardly a child, Arei. She was married for the sake of the gods." He threw up a hand toward her not realizing how his words had pained her more than Arei's teasing. He frowned as the wolf's head jerked toward him and tears began streaming out her bright blue eyes. She leaped down from the bed and took off toward the door. Orion's irritated look shifted to surprised understanding. "Shit!" He took off toward the door but Raven stopped him. 
"Don't! She'll be back in a minute. Trust me she won't go too far from Joslyn's side, especially right now." Raven stood back and admired her art. There were two large circles on the inside of another. Between their rings there were words written in an old dark language. Four smaller circles broke through the rings and writing marking north, south, east, and west. The symbol of Poseidon sat inside the north circle, south was an ocean specific water symbol, east held a symbol for healing, and the symbol inside the western circle was a possession symbol. A large seven-armed pentagram filled the center and inside the small circle of the pentagram held two intersecting infinity symbols for protection. She crossed an arm over her chest and cupped thumb under her chin and rubbed it with her finger. Looking from the sigil to the table of bowls, she mumbled. "Something is still missing..." Her eyes traveled over Jos's pale, weak body encircled in Russ's large, trembling arms to the massive twins that now stood by the tub. Her eyes traveled across Arei's tattooed body that was covered only by a small towel in the front most vital area over to Orion's equally tattooed body. "Humm…" She searched the ink across his chest working her way up until her eyes landed on a stone hanging from a necklace around his neck. Her eyes narrowed and she moved quickly to his neck, flipping the stone over in her hands. "This, is it natural? Did you find it by chance?" 
Orion furrowed his brows. He glanced down a Jos. "I didn't... it was gave to me... by her... shortly after we met. I turned it to a necklace after holding onto it for so long." 
Raven smiled pulling the necklace loose from his neck. "A holed stone from her home, perfect!" She gripped it tight in her hand and quickly grabbed the five gallon jug of spring water from the floor. She shoved it toward Orion and clutched the necklace to her chest. "Start pouring this over her slowly as I chant. She began chanting in the same accented dark fae language until all the water had been poured out into the tub. It didn't cover much more than the bottom, but Raven carefully dropped the necklace down into the small pool of water letting the chain glide out of her grip. She closed her eyes lifting both hands out straight, one in the twin's direction and the other aimed at the sigil. This time the rhythm and wording was different but it was still in the foreign tongue. 
Orion and Arei both let out a pained grunt as if they'd both been punched in the gut. Their eyes widened as they exchanged looks. Several of the tattoos covering their bodies were glowing a vivid blue. They turned in unison to the sigil. It too was emitting the same vibrant blue. They could see the curious gaze of the wolf as she stuck her head into the room. 
Russ's eyes were closed, his mouth pressed to Jos's head whispering reassuring words into her wet hair, and his arms wrapped tightly around her shivering body. A cold chill ran up his spine and goose flesh covered his body. He wanted desperately for the words he was whispering to be true, but fear set in as the already soft tap of her heart against his chest slowed and the time between the taps spaced farther apart. "I can't lose you... hang in there, baby." He gripped her tighter as tears streamed hotly down the cool skin of his cheeks. "I love you, I love you so much! I don't care what you are!" He buried his face into her hair as he began to rock her limp body in his arms. "Please, baby don't leave me... not like this..."
Arei could feel his own eyes burn as the boy's hushed words reflected his own thoughts. He fought the urge to push the boy out of his way and hold her tightly himself, but another painful pulse coursed through his body reminding him of his own role in it all. He clinched his teeth as he pulled his attention away from Jos's lifeless looking body to the sigil on the mirror. The two outer circles turned in opposite directions casting a bright glow over the room. The smaller circles of the four corners sat out boldly over the top moving rings and the center pentagram had opened up and was now the refection of a sandy beach with soft waves lapping at her banks. His eyes widened and the pain radiated farther into his body causing him to grit his teeth harder and clinch his fists. He could feel every muscle of his body ripple and pulse against the pain and a draining feeling. Something took over and he could feel it consume him... control him. 
Orion and Arei both threw their heads back and cried out at once, their arms out by their sides with palms facing the sigil. Water from the tub flew out and into them as if commanded. Raven's chanting grew louder and more rapid causing the markings along the twin's bodies to light up more. Their eyes popped open simultaneously emitting the same brilliant bright blue light and focused directly on the sigil. "Φ?ρτε στο προσκ?νιο" They said over and over in unison. 
Shelly couldn't help stepping farther into the room. Even with all the stress and worry over Jos's well being, the sight before her was enchanting. She watched in amazement as the huge, hulking men called forth the oceans and the tides of the sandy beach on the other side of the sigil began to rise and flow out of the mirror into the tub. The now rough waves splashed through the room soaking everything but also filling the tub with fresh, natural, warm ocean water. 
The chanting's tempo slowed, and she slapped her hands loudly together causing the sigil's center to close and the brilliant blue light dimmed. Orion and Arei both let out loud gasping breaths and fell to their knees beside the tub. Raven said softly, exhaustion heavy in her words. "It's done." She staggered back to the closest of the two double beds and sat down resting her elbows on her thighs as she struggled to catch her breath. Shelly came up beside her and nudged her with her nose. Raven stroked the soft fur of her head. She gave Shelly a weak smile. "She'll be alright now." She glanced up to Russ and the other eyes that were on her. "She'll just need her rest, as I'm sure we all do by now." She gave a half laugh. 
Russ nodded, his attention fully on Jos. "Her breathing seems to be easing, and I can feel her heart better now though it's still not beating as strongly as usual." He gently pushed her hair from her face as he continued examining her. 
Arei pushed himself up from the floor and leaned over the edge of the tub. He reached an arm in and stroked his hand over Jos's back. He let his palm rest firmly against it to feel her heart as well. He nodded, "She'll recover." He Pushed himself up bringing the towel back up with him. He reached his free hand down to his brother and help Orion up as well. They exchanged glances and both nodded. Orion and Arei each set a hand into the water letting the saltwater charge their wounded bodies. Arei removed his first and drug the remaining salt water on his hands across his face and into his disheveled hair. "Well that was something else... Didn't realize we could do... THAT..." 
Raven smiled tiredly up at them. "Me either, but it was worth a shot... and it worked so..." 
Arei arched a brow and chuckled, "Worth a shot? You didn't even know it would work yourself?" He shook his head. "You may actually be crazier than me." 
Orion rolled his eyes as he gathered his wet clothes. "You have know idea. The first time I met her was dragging her ass into the council for misusing dark magic to create fucked up weird animals." 
Raven shrugged. "I don't understand the difference between making them magically than the gods creating them from having sex with literally anything." 
Orion huffed out a begrudging laugh, "Fair enough point, if it wasn't for Isha you would have never gotten off so easy." 
Raven smiled her eyes focused more on past memories than the present. "Good times..."
Arei walked over between the beds and grabbed his clothes as well. Though they had fared better than Orion's, they too were soaked. "Glad I packed plenty of extra. How about you, Ry?" 
Orion frowned, "I'll need to borrow..." He rolled his eyes. "Forget it I'll just wear them wet." 
Arei chuckled "What's wrong bro? Afraid ya can't fill them out?"
Orion scoffed, "Afraid I couldn't fit in them, you wear them so tight." 
They continued bickering and teasing each other through the rest of the night until exhaustion finally caused them each to drift off into an uneasy sleep, except Raven. Once she was sure everyone was asleep, she grabbed the unused bag of supplies and some of the leftover herbs and oils from the dresser. She dipped the container meant for ice in the tub scooping out some of the water and made her way silently out the door.

When he woke up, he found himself traveled back in time. What choice would he make to change his future?

(Author's Note: There are quite a few grammatical errors in this one, and it will take some time for me to rewrite the whole story. Unfortunately, I'm working on a contracted novel, and I will do it only after finishing the other one. If you are okay with a few errors, you can go on and try this out. It's a slow-paced novel. SHORT STORY of WARD COURIER: The Inventor's Tale: "The Blacksmith and the Mirror," Conclusion

A beam of light from the lot cast a glint on a still sprinkler above them. "He cut off the water," said The Brother, looking to it. He clenched a hand as though feeling the beat of his own heart and reflected as though undergoing a debate. "So be it," he said when his fury allowed him to speak. "So be it. Then he must lose his deepest desire."
He turned like a general rising from the war-table after settling on a battle plan. "There will be a consequence to this, but no one must know till the time is near." He shook his curled hand into his own core again. "And he must lose his deepest desire."
The next meeting again took place at the door to the Inn, and it again led by surprise from day to dark. The Brother had a sense of mission. "I can only say this once, man," he said as the pair walked in the misty, seemingly early spring night.
After Vauno had gone back through the Inn door, he must wait for dark and then go on a mission several miles out of town to a large home that was fated to burn later that evening. He was to break into the house and take from the elegant basement lounge a certain carved metal ornament, actually a large medallion. This would be taken directly out to the old ring of stones east of town that Vauno should remember from their former journey. He was to dig into the exact center of the ring until an object came forth. The metal ornament was to be placed precisely there, and whatever he found in the circle on the ridge would be taken to the basement of the Inn. If Vauno remembered where he had dug for the trunk, that was where he must site this object several feet below the surface. Entrance to the Inn would be easy, and a mark would be waiting for him in the dirt of the floor.
"Make no mistake," said The Brother. "Much depends upon this. You may understand it someday, but it does not concern you now. And don't worry about stealth in any of your efforts tonight. Just do things exactly as I say. Things will never again be as they were."
"The New Atlantis," said Vauno, savoring the phrase. He was sure he understood.
As if surrendering to a merry thought, The Brother looked from over his shoulder in the shadows and said, "Indeed... The New Atlantis." A band of light from above them fell across his eyes like a mask.
"But can only one do all of this?" said the Blacksmith, who, when it came to it, had a fear of dark places and lonely errands.
"If you think," said The Brother as if improvising. "Indeed. What of your friend, the one who came with us?"
"He will help. But then after, is he fit to go there with us?"
The Brother rubbed his jaw. "It is only for the chosen."
"I understand," said Vauno, with the thrill of 'Challenge, and then reward.' "But what of him? Can he be trusted to remain behind, knowing what we have done?"
The Brother thought and said, "Maybe not. His time is not to be long, anyway, and he can be spared. Yes... Now, how can it be done?"
He rubbed his jaw. "Yes, this is it. One can do the rest. Tonight it will be a freeze, and you know how he likes drink. You can return to the Inn alone for what must be done. Make sure there is drink on hand after your work at the stones. Night and nature will take care of things from there."
Most went as it was planned. A back door was left unlocked at the fine country home to which they were sent. Its alarm was mysteriously silent. The item they were directed to confiscate turned out to be a stylized metal version of the very seal the Roycroft enterprise used on all its productions. It was a curious artifact, with many suggestive icons etched onto it. It was, though, neither burdensome nor especially heavy. The Brother could have fitted it inside one of his own long coats! Why The Brother could arrange to have it set out waiting in an unlocked house yet not simply make off with it himself was for the Blacksmith another of the night's puzzles.
The Blacksmith had his own worries, though, and he was beginning to wish he had not brought his friend. The man's comments were distracting, and his antics were foolhardy. Convinced by Vauno's assurance of supernatural protection, he even seemed to be enjoying himself. He could not resist taking a few other items from the house and he insisted upon returning to the Inn to dispose of them in his own room. Vauno had misgivings about the plunder as well as the extra stop, but he held them all in. The items were best out of the bed of his pickup truck as soon as they could be. He would not be there long, anyway.
The Blackmith breathed easier when they came to the arc of stones. He had found a sheltered parking space for his truck. Moon and stars were out, the night was crisp and cheerful, and there would soon be nothing to connect them with the site of a robbery and what he fully believed would be an arson. They did the digging in the center of these rocks and were much surprised to find a pale, gritty, ovoid stone, about double the size of a human head, two feet down. It resembled little more than a large egg. It had an odd texture to it like it was made of plaster or cement. When it was out and the ornament in its place, they sat on the stones and celebrated with a spell of drink. The Blacksmith paced himself, but when Igor staggered to the bushes to relieve himself he tumbled down a wooded slope. The Blacksmith knew that the creek was far below and that the banks were steep. As he was leaving Vauno thought he could hear a donkeylike bray, an indignant demand for help, but he could have used a little with his own burden, and that made it all the easier to walk away.
When he returned to the Inn through the door The Brother had told him would be open, the Blacksmith was mildly shocked to find things changed since his last visit with The Brother. Gone was the rough, unfinished surface into which he and his comrade had dug their hole in the tower's foundation. A fine floor was in its place with an open space in the middle and a stack of tiles waiting to be reset. A wheelbarrow was waiting, too, to hold the excavated dirt, and brooms and pans set out to tidy up after.
The Blacksmith set to his digging and was puzzled to find nothing but dirt in the space of the trunk he had deposited there on a day - or was it a night? - that seemed so far in the past. He had no theory for why The Brother would go to such elaborate and secretive measures. There was so much to piece together, and this type of thinking was never his favorite.
Other things were on his mind, too. He had heard the fire reported through the radio of his truck, and realized both that this was the home he and Igor had pillaged and that he who had died in it had once owned the Inn. It was the man who, rumor had it, had tried to burn the Inn for the insurance money. A wave of fear went through the Blacksmith, and he did not even wonder what caused the blaze, though there was evidence to link them to the spot - to an arson death! - if anyone discovered Igor's loot. 'Curse the fool!' thought Vauno. He deserved what came to him. Thank the stars, thought Vauno, that he himself would be here little longer!
It was near dawn when he looked out a window. The police were pulling in the lot. Had someone seen his truck near the house before it burned? That must have been it. There was one thing to do, and that quickly! He must stay in his room and pretend to be asleep. He must say that Igor borrowed his truck, that he had returned it and not been seen in hours - that was it! Igor was nowhere to be found, and would deny no story when he was. It was then that he spotted the blasted silver candlesticks on his own bed. Curse the day that he had shown the lout where he kept his extra key! He must have stashed his booty here to save the walk to his own quarters on the third floor! There was nothing for the Blacksmith to do but to do immediately what he was planning to do soon.
He sped through the dark banquet hall and kitchen, a way no stranger to the Inn would choose. No one would cut him off before he came to the dim bar, lit only through the windows by the growing dawn. He sat before the mirror with a sense of surety that fought the panic anyone else would be feeling. He was nearly beginning to doubt The Brother when he heard the familiar voice. "What can I do you for?"
The voice sounded so clearly that he turned to look at the chair to his right. There was no one, but when he looked back in the mirror before him, The Brother appeared exactly as if sitting on the stool beside him. He wore his signature hat and an old-fashioned raincoat as if ready to leave on a journey. Something was different about his manner.
Vauno heard talking and footsteps in other parts of the building. "Brother, remember what we have always resolved: Challenge, and then reward."
"Challenge, and then reward," said The Brother as if joining a toast, and more quickly than Vauno would have liked.
"The job is done," said Vauno, uncomfortable asking something of The Brother. It had always been the other way around. "Let us go."
"Good, I am ready," said The Brother, clapping his hands to his knees and making eye contact through the mirror. "Where?"
"The New Atlantis," said Vauno. "For those who have surmounted challenge, and then will receive reward."
In the mirror, the reflection of The Brother was as crisp and cool as that of any one who had ever sat at that bar, but there was just a flicker to it. It was a liquid reflection, as if in quicksilver, as if deliberately made to seem too real. "Reward?" said the image. "Of course. You shall have it."
He could see by their reflections that the policemen were now behind him, reading him his rights. Who knows what they thought of him, speaking frenziedly into a mirror? Could they see what he saw? "They'll get me for theft! And arson!" he said. "Maybe even murder."
"Those are possibilities," said The Brother. "Maybe we should have stuck to the first plan."
"It isn't fair!" said Vauno.
A hand fell on Vauno's shoulder, and The Brother put on his hat and stood to go. His image in the mirror flickered, and his last expression was one of rueful admission like a teacher whose pupil has failed a test. He said something that Vauno recognized as one of the historic Elbert Hubbard's more famous sayings: 'Punishment should suit the criminal, not the crime.'
