What if one day, we could pierce through that illusion and break past the shackles of human perception? What sort of wonderful things would we be able to witness? 

Since ancient times, humanity has always wondered about how and when it was born. About how life was born on Earth. And, of course, about where humanity was heading...

But there are some questions that were meant to be left unanswered...

Unfortunately for Isaak Gladstone, a seemingly normal college student, these questions came looking for him. 

Without warning one day, he was mysteriously spirited away while taking an impromptu nap during one of his classes and awoke only to find himself in a terrifying, brave new world.

A ruined, hostile world filled with strange people, strange creatures, and even stranger secrets. A planet overflowing with death, nearing the end of its life.

Earth.

Why was Isaak brought to this dying planet? Who or what is the culprit behind this unexplainable abduction? 

And most importantly... who killed the world? 

Somewhere within these questions was the answer Isaak needed to get back home. Problem was that it would not be easy to acquire it without... a little love and death in the mix.


A tall, slender figure stood motionless in her simple black robe in front of the mirror, or rather in front of one of the mirrors.  The upper side of the mirrors was bordered by an arch, which was provided with equally dark blue signs that only said something to the users of this room. Each mirror had exactly 6 of these signs, but they were never the same, even if one or the other sign was repeated on one or the other mirror frame. The black-robed figure stared motionless into one of the mirrors and made hand-wiping movements. The images in the mirror changed at a frenzied speed. Hardly imaginable that someone could have taken the pictures in itself at this speed, yet the figure was still extremely satisfied with what he saw. With a finger sticking out from under the wide, heavy robe, he painted signs in the air that took on a light blue colour and sank into the mirror. Shortly thereafter, the robed man wiped the pictures aside to take other pictures, which he also provided with bluish characters. Eventually, a single picture emerged from the chaos of different pictures. A stream of dancing lights in all the colors of the rainbow were seen rising from a mountain. The lights formed a thick pillar of a spiraling stream of rainbow-colored light spiraling up to the sky. The figure stared spellbound into the mirror and used the fingers to draw further characters in the air and let them sink into the mirror. But the picture did not change. He repeated the process, but nothing happened. Furiously, he clenched his fists and made a wiping movement over the mirror and the image disappeared and only the silvery surface, in which the blue light of the Kronur coals was gently reflected, remained. With an energetic step, the figure left the room through one of the mirrors.

Under the street lights, Hao Ren picked up the wolf fur which he found on the ground. Despite being drenched in cold sweat, he managed to regain his composure quickly thanks to the ‘training’ he had in numerous past encounters . He first wanted to make sure that there were no other suspicious signs within the vicinity—a lesson he learned while spending the previous two days with Lily and Vivian. The presence of ‘the other kind’ could usually be detected simply by identifying the characteristic signs and phenomena. For example, the breath and beastly smell of a werewolf or the blood-tinged chill of a vampire. He felt that the dream had to somehow be related to ‘the other kind’ (after all, he had bumped into many of them during the last couple of days) although, his sixth sense detected no trace of any anomalies.

"Landlord?" Lily looked at him, her eyes appeared unusually bright and spooky in the dark. "What’s wrong?" she asked.

"Did you find anything amiss?" Hao Ren knew that the wolf was a highly vigilant creature. He could still vividly remember the moment of the wolf’s attack in his dream.

Lily got down on the floor and sniffed around carefully. After that, she got up and shook her head. "None that I could find. Everything is as usual. You saw  something unusual?"

"Never mind, let’s head back." Hao Ren took the wolf fur in his hand as he headed back home. Lily carried the deckchair and followed cluelessly from behind.

Back in the living room, Hao Ren sat on the sofa looking solemn and quiet. Sitting across him were Lily and Vivian who did not have a clue what was brewing in his mind. An old coffee table had been placed in the middle by Hao Ren as the previous one was wrecked by Lily and Vivian earlier on. Placing the wolf fur on the table, Hao Ren confessed to Vivian, "I saw something strange."

He talked about the strange dream he had in great detail. He told them especially about the vast grassland and two silver moons, hanging in the sky. "I got this when I woke up from the dream. I may have taken a shortcut to the other side or mastered reality warping superpowers," he joshed, pointing at the wolf fur.
Vivian did not find it amusing. She raised her eyebrows while picking up some of fur from the table. "It has the smell of an animal, not of black magic. This is definitely animal hair. Hey, big dog! Can you please confirm this?"

"Okay!" Lily took the wolf fur. "It smells very different from what I know. It has a different scent... the smell of another city—a mixture of soil and grass in it.  This subtle variance can only be picked up by werewolves." Then suddenly, it hit her. She banged the table as she  lashed out at Vivian, "Wait a minute, who did you just call a big dog?!" 

"Oh c’mon, be gentle!" Hao Ren pleaded. The old table could have met with the same fate as the tea table if Lily was in a transformed state instead. He turned  to Vivian, "So, what do you think? Was it some kind of magic?"

"It’s pretty simple to explain if it’s just a dream; sorcery and hypnotism could have achieved the same thing." Vivian’s eyebrows were still raised. "I could build a dream world big enough for hundreds to dream in without them realizing it was a dream. If one was creative enough, the person would believe he had made it to the other side. But I still can’t explain the object you brought out from the dream. As far as I know at least, there isn’t any magic which could have done that. It couldn’t possibly be magic. The dark side is a much more complicated world than I had imagined."

"Maybe, it could be this..." Lily eagerly interjected. "First, he was induced into a premeditated dream by way of sorcery or hypnosis, and the wolf fur could have been planted in his hand while he was asleep..."

"Oh please, can you say something more constructive?" Vivian chimed in before Lily could finish her sentence.

However, Hao Ren found that what Lily said was completely plausible. Her simple mind aside, her theory was a perfect explanation for what could have been an unsolvable mystery. Sometimes complex questions had simple answers.

Nonetheless, Lily had already ruled out the involvement of ‘the other kind’ so, her argument that it was a premeditated act did not hold up.
"I’m sure that what I got into was of something unusual; as sure as I am that God made little, green apples." Hao Ren sighed. "That’s just fate. Whatever comes, let it come but before that, I need to take a break!"

Both Lily and Vivian had learned that Hao Ren was conned into signing a fishy employment agreement with the self-proclaimed Goddess. Vivian was a smart girl—way smarter than Lily. She could see in Hao Ren the quality of extraordinary adaptability and guts as well as the ability to think on his feet despite his humble background as a sluggish youth, who wanted no trouble. Yet, Vivian did not know any ways to make him a superhuman overnight.

"Did Raven 12345 leave you any cheat codes or something?" Lily asked as she laid her face on the table. "I read from human novels that if you work for a God, the God will provide you with some kind of personal protective gears?"

"Hmm, she may have forgotten. I didn’t ask either," he said as it just crossed his mind. "I’ll ask when I see her. Anyway, I tried to call but I couldn’t reach her cellphone. I guess another trip to that place is necessary. I have a goddamn feeling that the Space Administration is a broken reed."

"You already had your first, strange dream. You need to fix the problem right at the source. I think it’s a day late and a dollar short now. As per sorcery norms, you’ll continue to experience the same dream again unless, you’re a bullfrog that doesn’t sleep." As Vivian talked, she slowly shapeshifted into a vampire. "I’ll give you an amulet. It will protect you from whatever sorcery or black magic."

The many talismans she wore caught Hao Ren’s eyes. "Do those things even work?" he asked cheekily.

"Who said that I was going to give you that?" Vivian’s eyebrows were raised. "What I mean is the power of the Blood Clan!"

Without hesitation, Vivian bit her finger and a drop of golden red blood was seen coming out from her fingertip. "Come over, I’m going to rub it on the back of your hand. It’s powerful enough to stop the worst sorcerous dream."
Hao Ren hesitantly reached out and looked on as Vivian rubbed the blood onto his hand. "Legend has it that vampire blood can help turn humans into vampires. So, am I being turned right now?"

"Not in a million years," she sneered. "Humans believed that a vampire bite is the vampire’s way to reproduce. If that’s true, we wouldn’t have to endure the persecution from the monster hunters and the church. We would have taken over the world since the bronze age."
While relating the history of human’s brutal persecution of the vampires, Vivian as a vampire herself, did not show signs of hostility towards Hao Ren.

"That’s impossible!"

Vivian yelled as she was shocked to see the drop of blood had disappeared the moment it made contact with Hao Ren’s hand.

The blood was completely absorbed.

 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living at ease in my home and prospering in my palace. I saw a dream that frightened me; my fantasies in bed and the visions of my head terrified me. So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, in order that they might tell me the interpretation of the dream. Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the diviners came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not tell me its interpretation.

This book takes its name from its hero, who was allegedly among the first Jews deported to Babylon, where he lived at least until 538 B.C. Strictly speaking, the book does not belong to the prophetic writings but rather to a distinctive type of literature known as “apocalyptic,” of which it is an early specimen. Apocalyptic writing first appears about 200 B.C. and flourished among Jews and Christians down to the Middle Ages, especially in times of persecution. Apocalyptic literature has its roots in the older teaching of the prophets, who often pointed ahead to the day of the Lord, the consummation of history. For both prophet and apocalyptist there was one Lord of history, who would ultimately vindicate the chosen people. Apocalyptic also has roots in the wisdom tradition. Daniel has the gift of discernment from God. Greek wisdom (represented by the Babylonian “magicians and enchanters”) is ridiculed (see especially chaps. 2 and 5), whereas God reveals hidden things to faithful servants.

This work was composed during the bitter persecution carried on by Antiochus IV Epiphanes (167–164 B.C.) and was written to strengthen and comfort the Jewish people in their ordeal. The persecution was occasioned by Antiochus’s efforts to unify his kingdom, in face of the rising power of Rome, by continuing the hellenization begun by Alexander the Great; Antiochus tried to force Jews to adopt Greek ways, including religious practices. Severe penalties, including death, were exacted against those who refused.

The book contains traditional stories, which tell of the trials and triumphs of the wise Daniel and his three companions. The moral is that people of faith can resist temptation and conquer adversity. The stories bristle with historical problems and have the character of historical novels rather than factual records. What is more important than the question of historicity, and closer to the intention of the author, is the fact that persecuted Jews of the second century B.C. would quickly see the application of these stories to their own plight.

There follows series of visions promising deliverance and glory to the Jews in the days to come. The great nations of the ancient world have risen in vain against the Lord; his kingdom shall overthrow existing powers and last forever; in the end the dead will be raised for reward or punishment. Under this apocalyptic imagery some of the best elements of prophetic and sapiential teaching are synthesized: the insistence on right conduct, the divine control over events, the certainty that the kingdom of God will ultimately triumph and humanity attain the goal intended for it at the beginning of creation. The arrival of the kingdom is a central theme of the gospels, where Jesus is identified as the human figure (or “Son of Man”) who appears in Daniel’s vision. The message in both parts of the first chapters is that history unrolls under the watchful eye of God, who does not abandon those who trust in him and will finally deliver and re-establish them. Moreover, it can be pointed out the same teaching in different symbolism; even describes the king’s dream as a “vision.”

Arnaut was deep in thought, as he munched on the tomato and basil salad that Ein had traded for his kimchi. 

He was listening to Ein as he spoke about the dreams that visited him this morning as well as the dreams he experienced while he was unconscious. Eventually, Arnaut finishes his food and sets down the empty lunch box. A relieving sigh escapes from his mouth.

"It's good to hear that you're experiencing dreams in your sleep. At least it's a good indication for me that you're getting enough rest! Haha!" Arnaut gives a pat to Ein's shoulder.

"Sleep is good, but being woken up by nightmares every now and then stresses me out more." Ein stretches his arms and sits up straight on the hospital cot. 

"Actually… you only had one dream Ein, two of those dreams that you mentioned, sounded like a memory." 

Arnaut crosses his arms and glances at Ein curiously. "When people dream about bad memories, they would consider it as nightmares in their sleep."

"Two of them were memories?" Ein's dark blue irises dilated in shock. 

"Dreams in psychology are usually interpreted as one's subconscious desires or repressed emotions. I saw signs of those from your second dream… but the first and the third…" Arnaut scratches his head in frustration. "Yeah, the first one is clearly a memory since I remember reading that from your daily journal when we first had our sessions. But the third, it has the signs of a dream but…" 

"Strange… I can't recall anything about meeting a blonde-haired kid." Ein sighs as he ponders. "And I certainly do not recall anyone with the name of Hobbes."

"Well… I'm taking a guess, but I think it had something to do with the memory lapses you incurred after the assault incident." Arnaut's expression stiffened and his eyes were glued onto Ein. 

"Ein, could it be that you're starting to recollect your lost memories?"

"I don't know… My memories after getting kicked out and Monique's family taking me in are still a blur, so I'm not sure." Ein massaged his temple as he felt a dull headache coming at him.

"Well, don't force yourself to remember, that will just stress you out, you know!" Arnaut stands up from his seat and clears away the empty food containers from the overbed table. "I'll clean up first, you should stay here and rest for the meantime." 

"Alright, see you in a bit, doctor." Ein gazed at Arnaut with a forlorn face and waved his hand, it looked like he was giving his final goodbyes to Arnaut.

"Hey, don't do that! It feels ominous!" Arnaut groans, he felt goosebumps grow on his nape. "I'll be back after a few minutes to check on you and close the windows, so you better stay put. And don't remove that monitor on your arm, Ein!"

Arnaut shuffles out of the room and closes the door gently. He went to the health centre's kitchenette and placed the food containers in the dishwasher. He then pulls out his phone and sends an email to Monique, copying Seori into the thread.

[Subject: Ein Therapy Log 10/16/2023]

[1:02 PM Just finished eating lunch with the patient. Apologies for the early log. (• ▽ •) Ein is on leave tomorrow so this has been sent a day in advance. (・–・) Sorry for the unexpected spam.]

[Ein is stable, but still recovering from the stress of the anxiety attack. He refused to speak further about the incident at the elevator. I asked him if it was related to his college memories and he said yes. Ein mentioned he dreamt thrice today.]

[1st dream was a memory of the past when he was disowned. The 2nd dream was where he met his child self and pushed him away. The 3rd dream was a memory about a blonde-haired, beaten up kid he met, but Ein was unsure as he can't recall further. He did mention the name "Hobbes" but doesn't recall meeting anyone with that name.]

[No signs or symptoms of concussion yet, but I suspect that Ein is gradually recovering his lost memories. After all, his lapses in memory were the aftereffects of overdosing flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) at the time of his sexual assault.]

[Will monitor him until the end of business hours (6 PM) and send him home after. (・–・)ゞ  I recommend that he goes for a check-up the day after tomorrow to rule out a concussion.]

Arnaut sends out the email and slips his phone back into his pocket, he then closes the lid on the dishwasher and turns it on to clean the food containers.

He felt his phone vibrate and pulled it out again to check His face grimaced as he read the name on the notification bar. It was a direct reply from Monique.

Arnaut was intrigued at Monique's reply. "What does she mean I already met Hobbes?" Arnaut felt confused as he read Monique's note. "Hmm… additional rewards?" His eyes squinted as he scans the attachment. "I hope this isn't a scam."

He then opened the attached file on the email. His jaw drops as he sees several Amazon UK gift vouchers amounting to £5000. 

"Holy shit!" Arnaut almost drops his phone in joy. 

'Well, I guess this will help me and Seori complete our stations in the game room.' Arnaut's eyes sparkled with glee, he quickly redeems the vouchers and places orders on a set of his & hers gaming chairs, peripherals, video games and volumes 1-5 of Love Bus manga.
