Kiryu laid on his bed. He had his favorite comic book in his hands. It was the only comic book he had. He read it over and over. The hero in this story saved people, and he never lost. He had superpowers, and he had huge muscles. He looked up to the hero. The only thing he hated about the story, were the victims of the villain's crimes. They were weak, and they could do nothing for themselves. They always relied on the hero. He hated them because they reminded Kiryu of himself.
"Kiryu! Go down to the market! We have enough for some bread today."
Kiryu's father was weak. He was bedridden, and they didn't have enough money to help him. His situation was hopeless.
"Ok, dad!"
Kiryu jumped out of his bed. He put his comic underneath his pillow. He liked being the only one who could see it. It meant he was the only one who knew what a hero was like. Kiryu grabbed the cash he needed, and he left towards the market. It was about a half an hour walk if he didn't stop. But he liked to stop. He liked to look at the clouds. They were powerful, and they were free. They could turn into tornados, and they could throw down lightning. They flew where no one could reach them, and they had not a care in the world. Kiryu made sure not to spend too much time looking at them because his father would probably become hungry. It had been 15 minutes since he started walking, and he saw something.
"A dog!"
Kiryu was excited. He didn't see many dogs around here. He took a step towards the dog, but he stopped. It appeared the dog was scared of him.
"You're weak, just like me."
Kiryu gently picked up the dog. He was so skinny, he didn't even feel like a dog. His bones protruded through his skin. Kiryu was happy that the dog trusted him, but there was something else. Somewhere in his heart, Kiryu felt disappointed. Not even this small dog saw him as a threat. Kiryu left the dog there, and he continued on his way. He entered the market and headed towards the bakery. The streets were filled with other people. Some were trying to sell goods, some were trying to sell their bodies, and some just had no place to go. They sat with their heads down, and they accepted despair. It was a disgusting sight. Kiryu could only afford one loaf, but that was better than usual.
"I'm home."
His dad was watching TV. The government issued out a TV to each family. It wasn't a luxury though.
"Your mom and sister should be here soon to watch the broadcast."
Kiryu broke half the loaf, and he handed it to his dad.
"Eat dad, you need your strength."
Kiryu sat on the ground, eagerly awaiting his sister and mother. It was his sister's first day of work. She was someone Kiryu looked up to because she was always smiling. Even in their hopeless situation, she would lighten up the mood. 
"Welcome home!"
They walked in. Kiryu looked up at his sister, and he expected her to say something witty. Maybe she would tell him about her day. But, she said nothing. Her eyes lacked any light. They were empty.
"Sis?"
She looked down at him. She said nothing. Her youthful innocence, what happened to it? Although Kiryu was clueless then, he later knew what happened. Her innocence was taken from her that day. Kiryu's mother and sister sold themselves. 
"The broadcast is starting."
Kiryu lived in a country far to the east of Yakusoku. The King here was cruel, and he enjoyed seeing other people's pain. He held a lottery every night, and if your family was chosen, they'd be killed in front of him. That's what happened next. 
Kiryu and his family were immediately transported the next day to the King's castle. They were brought before him. Kiryu was forced unto his knees, along with the rest of his family.
"Welcome, humble guests. I do this very often, so I think I'll skip the speech. Bring me the girl."
The soldiers grabbed his sister, and they threw her in front of the King. She had no reaction. Even as they tore flesh from her body, and tortured her, she didn't even flinch. It was like she couldn't feel pain. Eventually, she died in front of them all. Kiryu sat there, and he did nothing. He could do nothing.
"She was boring. Bring me the mother."
He continued. He killed Kiryu's mother and father next. They were exactly the same. They felt nothing. Kiryu was brought forward, and even though he tried to hold them back, tears fell down his face.
"This one is a bit more lively. Keep him alive as long as you can."
Bits of flesh were slowly cut off. Kiryu cried out in pain with each cut. He looked at the corpses around him. He couldn't do anything to save them. He couldn't even raise his voice to speak. He was truly weak. And with the sudden realization that he was powerless, he lost hope. He had always known he was weak, but he thought that maybe he could become strong. But now, it was over. No more chances. His soul faded. He was still breathing, but inside he was dead.
*CRASH*
The wall to the left had crashed open. Kiryu didn't raise his head to look. There was no point. Kiryu heard screams, and he heard explosions. He was picked up, and he passed out in an unknown man's arms. Later, he woke up in a room unfamiliar to him. His wounds had healed, and he felt something surging inside him. There was still some hope left.
"Where am I?"
"You are at the Capitol of our country, Yajusoku."
Kiryu's head jolted back. He didn't know someone was in here.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I should've been more careful. I'm Levi Tsuyoi, and I'm one of the King's Chairmen."
Levi raised out his hand, and Kiryu shook it.
