Si kembar menyantap makanannya dengan semangat, tak sabar untuk berlari ke area bermain. Sehun juga terlihat semangat seperti mereka. Lalu mengapa Yoona terlihat gelisah? Ternyata dikarenakan banyaknya pengunjung yang mengamati mereka.

     Pengunjung yang berada disana rata-rata adalah pasangan suami istri beserta anak-anak mereka. Dan ketika Yoona, Sehun dan si kembar memasuki tempat itu, tentu berbagai macam pandangan langsung mengarah ke mereka. Itu hal mudah untukku.." pria itu sudah bangkit dari duduknya siap melangkah menuju kasir. Tidak mungkin menyetujui hal itu, segera Yoona menghalanginya.

"Yak.. yak.. yak. Jangan." memaksa Sehun agar kembali duduk. "anja." pria itu mendengarkan perintahnya dan kembali menyantap makanannya.

"Hoh, jantungku berdebar hebat berkat teriakanmu." pria itu menggeleng tak menyerah. Ketika itu terdengar suara tangisan Seoeon. Dengan gerakan cepat Yoona segera melesat menghampiri adiknya itu. ternyata si kembar tengah berebutan mainan. Dan Seojun yang berhasil.

"Seojun-a.. bermainlah bersama hyungmu.." bujuk Yoona seraya mengelus pundak Seoeon. Seojun cemberut tak ingin. Merasa sedih, Seoeon memeluk Yoona dengan isak tangisnya yang berbisik. "apa kau senang melihat hyungmu menangis seperti ini?" Yoona mulai bertindak serius kepada Seojun. Dilihatnya disana, Jae Suk, Jong Kook dan Joong Ki menertawainya. Mereka geli bukan main melihatnya. "aish hyung! Apa-apaan ini!" teriaknya hingga suaranya serak.

"Aaaa!" kali ini suara teriakan ketiga pengawal itu. mereka ikut tercebur bersama Kwangsoo berkat dorongan dari Gook Joo. Kekasih Kwangsoo yang berbadan gempal itu mengacungkan jari tengahnya ke mereka bertiga. "Apaan sih!" teriak mereka, tapi Gook joo sudah melangkah pergi. Bersebrangan dengan Yoona yang baru saja menemukan keberadaan mereka disana berkat suara teriakan itu.

"Oppa, kalian sedang apa?" dengan polosnya, melangkah ke tepi kolam. Mengamati seniornya bingung.

"Apaan ini? Kalian mau latihan militer? Berenang dengan setelan jas?" sela Chanyeol yang baru saja tiba disana. dibelakangnya terlihat Kai yang memilih duduk disalah satu kursi pantai, duduk santai sembari menikmati drama korea dari tabletnya.

"Hah, omong kosong apa itu. kami baru saja didorong sama si gempal Gook Joo." kata Joong Ki yang baru saja berhasil keluar dari kolam. Begitu juga dengan si kekar Jong Kook yang dapat keluar dari kolam dengan mudah.

"Yak, bantu aku." Jae Suk meminta Jong Kook untuk menariknya dari kolam. Pada awalnya Jong Kook benar-benar menarik tangannya, tapi ketika nyaris berhasil, dengan santai Jong Kook melepas tangan Jae Suk. Tentu Jae Suk kembali tercebur kedalam kolam.

"Aku ganti baju dulu." si kekar pergi begitu saja diikuti Joong Ki yang berusaha untuk tidak mengiraukan Jae Suk. Masih didalam air, Jae Suk hanya bisa menyumpahi mereka dalam hati.

"Nuna, ikut denganku." juga tidak berniat membantu, Chanyeol menarik Yoona untuk segera mengikutinya. Bingung dan merasa aneh, mengapa Chanyeol harus menarik tangan? Mengingat Chanyeol adalah salah satu Tuan muda dirumah itu, Yoona pun merelakan dirinya ditarik seperti itu.

"Tuan, kita mau kemana?" tanya Yoona berusaha mengikuti langkah Chanyeol. Mereka melangkah menuju parkiran mobil.

"Temani aku ke suatu tempat.." tiba dihadapan mobil sedan barunya. Mendorong paksa Yoona agar segera masuk kedalam mobil, lalu berlari menuju pintu lainnya. Beberapa detik kemudian mobil melesat kencang keluar dari halaman rumah itu. di titik lain, Sehun yang baru saja bangun dari tidurnya, berdiri dari balik jendela kamarnya yang menghadap ke halaman depan rumah itu. awalnya ia masih belum sadar sepenuhnya, tapi ketika dilihatnya Chanyeol yang menarik tangannya Yoona lalu pergi bersama meninggalkan rumah, Yang tadinya hendak menguap mulutnya malah mengatup rapat membentuk garis tipis. Terdiam mengamati kepergian mereka. tapi sedetik kemudian ia kembali ke kasurnya. Berbaring sejenak lalu kembali tertidur.

"Kemana semua orang?" ketika masuk kedalam studio itu. tidak ada seorang pun disana. sofa penonton terlihat kosong melompong.

"kemarilah." panggilnya menyadarkan Yoona yang masih termenung di depan layar raksasa itu. dengan langkah ragunya, Yoona melangkah perlahan menaiki anak tangga yang berlapiskan karpet merah. Melewati sofa-sofa mewah yang pastinya sangat empuk. "duduk." perintah Chanyeol yang meminta Yoona untuk duduk disampingnya. Yoona mengikuti permintaannya. Baru saja gadis itu duduk, sofa empuk itu bergerak pelan, membuat tubuhnya nyaris berbaring seperti di kasur. Sedetik itu Chanyeol melempar sebuah selimut berbulu yang lembut ke mukanya. "kau hanya perlu duduk manis disini hingga aku selesai menonton filmnya." jelas pria itu.

Mendengus sejenak. "yak, jika ingin menonton film, kenapa kau membawaku? Kenapa bukan pengawal yang lain?" keluh gadis itu menepikan selimut dari wajahnya.

"Mereka terlalu berisik. Lagi pula akan terlihat aneh jika aku pergi nonton dengan seorang pria." ujarnya dengan popcorn yang memenuhi mulutnya. "nuna, kau pasti akan menyukai filmnya." dan mendadak bersemangat ketika film sudah mulai diputar.

"Memangnya film apa yang akan kita tonton?" tanya Yoona mencoba membenarkan letak tubuhnya agar lebih terasa nyaman.

"Horror." sahut Chanyeol.

"Apa?!!" kaget bukan main. wajah Yoona mendadak memucat.

"Nuna! Kau mengagetkanku saja." popcorn yang ada dimulutnya berhamburan keluar.

"Kau bilang kita akan menonton film horror?" tanya Yoona lagi.

"Hmm.." Chanyeol menyadari itu, wajah Yoona yang sudah memucat dan tatapan gadis itu yang terlihat gelisah. "nuna, jangan bilang!" menutup mulutnya dengan telapak tangannya. Menahan tawa yang hendak meledak. "kau takut dengan film horror?" tanyanya dengan tawanya yang tertahan. Tidak menjawab, mencoba tenang, Yoona menyelimuti seluruh tubuhnya dengan selimut. "huahahaaaa... kau lucu sekali nuna.." Chanyeol tertawa geli.

"Diamlah." menyikut lengan Chanyeol agar pria itu segera menutup mulutnya. Dengan penuh tenaga, Chanyeol mengatup rapat mulutnya. "aish, kenapa harus film horror." batin gadis itu mengutuk dirinya sendiri.

     Film terus berjalan dengan iringan musik horror yang mendebarkan. Kemunculan-kemunculan sosok-sosok menakutkan mulai terlihat. Suara teriakan sang aktor menambah kesan mencekam pada studio mewah itu. tapi sepertinya Chanyeol sangat menikmati film itu. berbeda dengan Yoona yang terus bersembunyi dibalik selimut, dengan kedua tangannya yang menutup telinganya dengan erat. Bahkan di ruangan yang sejuk itu keringat tetap mencucur di kening gadis itu.

"Nuna, kau akan terus seperti itu?" panggil Chanyeol berbisik. Yoona tidak ingin menghiruakannya dan terus meringkuk kikuk di sofa empuk itu. "nuna.. apa kau mau aku memutar satu film lagi?"

"Oo?" ditariknya selimut itu dari wajahnya. Ternyata filmnya sudah selesai. Dengan penuh syukur ia menghela nafas panjangnya. "kita pulang sekarang." tidak perlu menunggu perintah dari Tuannya itu, Yoona langsung melangkah cepat keluar dari studio mewah itu.

"Hoh, kenapa dia yang memerintahku?" menggeleng tak paham. Lalu kembali tertawa geli mengingat ekspresi Yoona tadinya. "dia benar-benar lucu." berlari guna menghampiri Yoona yang sudah melangkah jauh. "nuna, tunggu aku!"

     Mereka kembali kerumah dan tiba disaat sore telah tiba. Di sore itu halaman depan rumah terdengar sangat berisik seakan dipenuhi banyak orang. Namun yang terlihat hanya si kakek bervespa, Kwangsoo, Kai, Jae Suk, Jong Kook, Joong Ki dan Gook Joo. Sedang apa mereka? Bermain Tenis. Sepertinya si kakek gaul itu sangat menggemari bidang olahraga. Dengan tubuh gempalnya Gook Joo berlari penuh tenaga. Dibantu Kwangsoo, mereka tampak seperti pasangan petenis handal. Dengan lawan mereka yang tak kalah tangguh, si kaca mata dan Bos kesayangannya, si kakek bervespa. Dipinggir lapangan, Jong Kook dan Joong Ki membantu menyoraki mereka agar lebih terasa seru. Lalu Kai? Tetap setia dengan tabletnya.

"Baiknya rumah ini dijadikan GOR saja." ujar Chanyeol yang mulai melangkah menghampiri mereka. Tapi paling tidak, Yoona lebih suka menghadapi hal seperti ini dari pada harus menemani Tuannya menyaksikan film yang paling ia hindari.

"Oo Yoona-a! Kemarilah, gantikan aku." teriak Gook Joo yang sudah keluar dari lapangan. Memberikan raket tenisnya kepada Yoona, gadis itu tersenyum mengingat dulunya ia juga pernah berlatih tenis. Sepertinya sudah saatnya untuknya menunjukkan kemampuannya disini. Dengan senyum beringasnya, melangkah masuk ke lapangan yang entah kapan menjadi lapangan tenis itu. Sajangnim, mianhae. Ujarny dalam hati. Dan pertandingan yang sebenarnya pun dimulai.

Six weeks later, Arial was deep at work proofing the last audiobook narration. Gracelyn had done a fantastic job and she was looking forward to bringing her art to audiences in five days. It was a bit frenetic around the office these days and she was worried about every detail being perfect. The enormity of the coming deluge of feedback from an audience the size she had never imagined putting her writing in front of was narrowing in on her psyche. 

Holly barged into the room out of breath. 

"You okay?"

"Oh, my goodness Speindler wants a meeting! Today! Before the books," she stopped and bent over slightly out of breath. 

"You need to take a deep cleansing breath," Arial said with wide eyes trying to figure out exactly what she was trying to tell her with all that gibberish. 

"Arnie Speindler called this morning from Hollywood and wants to talk with you about optioning the script of the books. He wants to do it before they come out, as Byron had told him about this and wants to get ahead of the deluge."

"Great, when?"

Holly wrinkled her nose, "wheels up in three hours."

"Today! I have so much to do!"

"Private jet to get us there, and back tomorrow morning early. We will be back before anyone can miss us, and possibly with a new contract in place that could change your life in even more meaningful ways than your current contracts."

"Okay," she said after a few minutes. She had long agreed to be along for the ride of this crazy train of a new author, so if this was part of the deal she was in. 

"I also have a little surprise for you," Holly said with a huge smile. 

"What?" 

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you," she said. "Now take a quick walk, pack an overnight bag and meet me back here in," she glanced at her watch. "Forty minutes."

"Okay, well that means I have to run," she said. 

"Go!" Holly said clapping her hands. 

Nine hours later, Arial was sitting at the tiny table in a swanky restaurant in LA trying to keep her stomach from growling. The crazy meeting with the great Arnie Speindler had gone great, though Arial still couldn't wrap her brain around the fact that it looked as if he was on board to direct her book into a movie. The screenwriters were over the top excited, and lawyers twittering during the meeting. Her brain was struggling to keep up with her reality. Private planes, lawyers, agents, and people starting to know her name was a new realm. 

She loved that something she created was getting so much attention, but she was struggling to figure out how to act. What to do with the new income? And honestly, who to trust to help navigate this new world. She just needed someone to talk to, and Adryn while he tried wavered between over the top happiness, jealousy and just telling her to go with it. He just as lost as she with all the new inputs happening to her world. 

She sighed and waited to glance at a bit at the high-end restaurant. She recognized a few actors in the room and felt like she was definitely in the wrong spot. As she sank a bit into the cushioned booth, the tiredness overcame her. She had been running on fumes for weeks, but this trip and the subsequent meeting had just about been the tipping point. 

"Hello Ms. Right," a deep voice rumbled throughout her system. Her heart tripped over itself, and her breath suspended as she turned in a fog. 

A tear threatened to overflow when her eyes traveled up the entire height of Zander. 

She slid from the booth, and without a moment's hesitation reached up to hug him, as he bent wrapping his arms around her waist. 

"Oh my goodness," she whispered in his ear. "I missed you so much."

"The feeling is mutual," he said lifting her off the ground. When she lifted her head from his shoulder they were face to face. 

Time suspended as she bit her lip, and watched as his eyes slid to her mouth. Every nerve ending in her body was alive and dancing, begging for something just beyond her reach. He bent forward slightly until she could feel his breath, and felt her lungs suspend movement. 

When his lips lightly fluttered across her, she had to hold on a bit tighter to his broad shoulders. She wouldn't have been able to stand up on her own two legs. She slanted her head slightly and fully sealed her lips against his. She felt like she was flying, and the feel of this kiss was short-circuiting her entire system. For just a brief moment she didn't care that they were in the middle of a public restaurant. 

"Wow!" Holly's voice cut in. 

Arial pushed back from Zander, as reality crashed in on her like a bucket of ice water. He put her down slowly, and she stepped back as her face flushed a crimson-hot red.

"I didn't realize you two were an item," Holly said looking ashamed. "I just thought it would be nice to surprise you with dinner with Zander."

"Oh we aren't an item," Arial assured. 

"I appreciated the call," Zander said. "I have been working for weeks straight, this was a great surprise."

"Great! You just kissed the up and coming author of the new Speidler film in a public restaurant in LA. You two better get your stories straight on what your relationship is because tomorrow there are going to be gossip rags picking this story up. Zander Tirado hasn't had a girlfriend in how long," she asked with a wave of her arm toward Zander. 

"Can we sit," he asked glancing about. 

Arial slid into the booth without another word, Holly came in next to her and Zander across from them. 

"It has been three years."

"What?" Arial said shocked. "How long since your last date though?"

"A year maybe."

"They are ripe for a new story to follow, and this will be it," Holly said. 

"We just won't respond and it will die," Arial said lightly. 

"Yeah, let's see how that goes. You do realize you look like a lovestruck teenager whenever the two of you are in the same room," she glanced between them. "So we can ignore it now, but soon this will come to a head and you will need to face your feelings for each other."

"I could use a drink," Zander said after a moment. 

"Me too," Arial added trying to keep the tone even though she wanted to slink off into a corner and lick her wounds. She wiped her finger across her lips, as hers found Zander. He smiled lightly at her, and she knew at that moment. They might be trying to act like nothing was going on, but that kiss told her differently and that smile let her know that the day was coming when they would need to discuss this thing between them. 

Tonight though was about friends and new opportunities on the horizon.

When Arial calls the wrong extension at work, she find a voice on the other end she wants to call again or maybe he could be the one she was looking for all along.

Roxy and Netro broke into there facility and placed a hardware that fried up their software and equipment. As Stealthy as they are‚ they were able to break threw they're defenses and were sneaky‚ "What Are You Talking About" Natural said Confused‚ Netro zoomed in and seen the guys talking and Seen Static‚ he had the File that read Instic walker 23 dot Lily. "So your saying he stole my mother's file and took it to a lab" Unknown said as Calabaza nodded his head while Netro ended the Display Of The Footage‚ "Me And Neely Have Find Out happened to our mother" Unknown Said As Natural Slammed his fist "How Did Static get himself Involved into this‚ Someone Must of set him up" Calabaza said as He Worried Of What happens next‚ as it fears him worst than worst‚ "No he didn't drag himself into this‚ he probably had stolen it cause he new Unknown would try to find what happened to your mother's past‚ and he doesn't want you to-to know what he had done to her" Natural said in a serious face as Unknown's Eyes Widened "What did He do to her" Unknown said as Natural stayed quiet as Unknown began to yelled "Tell ME‚ WHAT DID HE DO TO HER" Unknown Freaked Dramatically and Anger'd as Neely walked in "What's going on" Neely grab a cup of coffee "Static killed Our Mother" Unknown said as Neely's eyes widened as he looked at Natural "Natural is he lieing" Neely said as Natural began to speak "I was blacked out when it had all happened‚ I tried to save her but I was too late." Natural said As Unknown turned away "Neely let's go‚ we're gonna Confront Static For One Final Time. Natural You did all you could cause i forgive you‚ Roxy Netro What Else are they planning" Unknown Said as Netro Looked at Natural then looked at Unknown "If We're gonna do this‚ we're doing it together. Cause Static is being settled up" Netro And the others Went out the door and Natural followed while silver spoke "Verilan won't be able to help us out‚ he's out of town" Silver hugged Natural "It's Fine I don't blame what you and Unknown are going through‚ if it were me I do the same to find answers" Silver said while Natural nodded‚ "But that's the thing‚ I don't know what happened to her‚ I was blacked out" Natural said while silver understood "it's okay‚ no worries" Silver said as Netro Broke through the facility and scientist started to panic in fear‚ a person looks in the camera and sees them breaking into the facility "So I Was Right He is Here" The Guy said as He turns Around to static "Go Do Your Job Static‚ they already suspect you to be the bad guy" it said as static nods "As You Wish Hakai Suru" Static said Being Controlled by a fictional character. They Yelled As He Smiled.

The town guards swaggered over to us. The waiters and attendants of the restaurant moved instead to soothe the other patrons of the restaurant about the disturbance.

One of the town guards, a broad-faced man with a rough mustache and stubble chin, pulled at an empty chair and pushed it over towards our table. He sat on it, facing backwards, and grabbed a chicken leg off the spread.

He munched on the meat and then pointed with the bone at Yae, "I remember you. Didn't I tell you to keep out of trouble? I see you've found yerself a whole new set of troublemakers."

Yae frowned slightly. "They were the ones to accost me, what was I supposed to do? It was self-defense, that it was."

"I'm not talking about some little crooks. You should just have ran away instead of makin' a show of it! Violence is not a solution to everything!" and then he pointed at me, "And you… what's your excuse?"

I smiled. "It was crazy, officer! There were these idiots who just wouldn't let us go until we allowed them to run their faces into our fists! Repeatedly!"

He scoffed. "A joker, huh? You'll find we have no patience for jokes in this here parts. No one asked you to butt in, you lot did more damage to the town than anyone."

"They were threatening to do things to Yae!" Elze shouted out. "You can't blame us from DOING YOUR JOB FOR YOU! What sort of town guards are you anyway? Where were you when all of this was happening?"

"Hey, what we know is what we can do about. If rascals want to rumble in the streets, that's not something we can fix until someone tells us so we can go there! You know how big this town is? We were actually just about to get there when you lot just all decided to run away! Don't you play dumb now, there's lots a' people who saw you fighting recklessly in this here good town!"

"Hmm? Why is damage to the town more important than criminals accosting people out on the street?"

Monika pulled up relevant info about town guards. When thinking about town guards, what immediately leapt to mind was Sir Terry Pratchett's novels about the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork in Discworld.

/"But that itself was inspired by the Rembrandt Van Rjin's painting of the Night Watch, which itself was commissioned by Captain Banning Cocq and seventeen members of his Kloveniers – civic militia guards! So… town guards might not actually be directly employed by the local lord or mayor!"/

She looked at the town guards. /"Yet volunteer militia would certainly be better dressed, better equipped, and better motivated for crime prevention. I think maybe they're less volunteer police officers than the more structured protection racket of the local government."/

Wait.. that brought up a strange idea. Could… could the whole thing actually have been staged, and the town guard were about to swoop in and show themselves being all protectors of the peace? The deliberately leaked Yae's location as bait as an excuse to show off and gleefully and justifiably break some heads? Remind the shopkeepers about how much they were 'needed', maybe?

I shrugged. "So what's the problem?"

"The problem is that you used magic in town. That's against the law. You damaged town property! And that's gots its penalty!"

"One could also argue that being under fear for our lives, NOT resorting to magic would have been dumb as hell going four against about, what, ten armed and hostile criminals? Criminals who had some strange courage to commit such violence in the middle of the day, threatening **** and death, and people were just watching interested at seeing a young girl beaten down."

Then I shook my head sadly. "I do not have much sympathy for this town."

"Who needs yer worthless sympathy? Two gold penalty for ye," and he looked at the girls, "each of ye, or ye spend a month in the clink!"

"Ha! Good lu-"

I reached under the table and patted Elze's knee to keep her from resorting to violence. She glared at me, pop-eyed, from the side. I shook my head gently. We did not actually have the budget to pay for an interesting restaurant floor fight scene with tables and plates and fleeing diners flying all over the place.

I had a thing against ruining other people's honest business for no good reason. I was always on the side of the poor innkeeper on those kung-fu movies and wished they had a decent bouncer to toss these hot-headed idiots out on the street.

"I guess that just leaves one question, then…" I reached into my chest pocket and flashed my purple Adventurer's Guild card. "Am I being detained?"

Monika groaned and palmed her face.

The town guard tsk'ed. "Just like I figured. You lot always think you can get away with anything. Just a Purple? Don't get too full of yourself, boy."

"There's nothing wrong with taking free legal advocacy that comes with being a duly licensed adventurer. The Guild does not usually interfere, but that doesn't mean they can't be asked to intervene. Some of us choose to follow laws as much as possible – and expect that the law treat us fairly as well."

"Just for that, it's three gold and if not we're bringing ya in right now!"

I raised my gloved hand up, still urging Elze or Yae not to move. The town guard flinched a bit, but then there was that flash of eagerness passing across his face?

I held that pose for several long agonizing seconds. I measured how much hassle it would be to just fight our way out of this joint. The guards had their hands on their swords and bent down slightly ready to move, but as the seconds passed no one budged.

I stared at the guard in front of me, meeting his eyes with the blankness of my own plastic-shelled visage until I could see him sweat. His face broke open in a contemptuous sneer. 

"You… you don't even actually want to do that, do you?" I murmured. "You want me to swing the first punch…!"

I closed my raised right hand to one pointing finger. "[Playback], please."

Then I had Monika replay the recording of what he had just said for the past thirty seconds. The sneer slowly faded from his face as he realized we had some magic to accurately replay events as evidence to his own superiors. Null magic was personal magic, it was not something they could stop just from denying access to magic stone.

"Oh. Right! I forgot, you did say you could perfectly remember and repeat again everything you could see and hear!" Elze gushed out melodramatically.

All the way back at the start, I had asked for and read the Guild guidebook. Reflet Guildhouse was happy to assist, it was always good to see new adventurers treating their new career seriously.

There was actually a very strong precedent for this and helped to protect the Guild's neutrality across different nations. Trumped-up charges was the best way for local lords to try make adventurers 'learn their place', until they learn that the adventurer they were hassling just so happened to have strong ties to an army or well capable of blasting through their town walls all on their own.

The Guild usually did not interfere with their adventurers unless what they were doing impacted the reputation of the guild as a whole. It actually turned out that local puissant lords thinking they could push around the guild and threaten adventurers was a threat to their neutrality. If their kings had already granted the Guild their grace to operate, from where do these petty tyrants get their arrogance?

Adventuring was also an old past-time of royals sending their sons to more directly gauge the mood of the populace and ferret out malingering lords. As the history of the Adventurer's Guild stated, not just a few adventurers became nobles in their own right, even kings. The monarch of a certain northern neutral kingdom was even a Guild Grandmaster.

"Is it just because we're adventurers? Do remember that there is nothing that prevents nobles and royalty from becoming adventurers as well, town guard. I know that you don't know who I am, so let me just ask you this – are you feeling lucky?"

I smiled thinly. You want to hassle me with legalese for dealing with your job of failing to keep the peace from criminals in your own town? Then be prepared for me to hassle you back with politics.

"Feth!" he spat aside. "You adventurers are all the reason we have this problem in the first place! You all think you can just walk into town and cause trouble? We have to live with the mess you all leave behind!"

"I would normally be much more sympathetic with the damage we caused, but really it's a good reminder that there are some people whom stupid untrained criminals can't just push around. If they had any real strength, they'd have been adventurers instead."

He grit his teeth. Implied of course, was that anyone with any real strength would be an adventurer instead of a mere town guard.

"So what if we're just town guards? You're going up the whole of Amanesque! You're just another criminal if you try to fight us!"

"And if I actually don't, you're just another crooked servant trying to steal good coin from their lord by under-reporting income from fines! I get to spend time in jail and get this whole thing made into a scandal for your master and then win money from him! You get to lose your head!"

I laced my fingers together in a Gendo pose and grinned. "Some property damage is nothing compared to evading your lord's rightful dues! I think we should be talking about how much you should be paying /me/ to keep silent about this instead."

"You…! You won't get away with this!"

/"Wait, why have the roles seem to have reversed so suddenly?"/

I kept pushing. "You won't get away with lying about anything, town's man. That eight gold you're trying to extort from me, I could pay a whole lot of adventurers and barristers to swarm this town instead. You know you don't have the personal strength to bring me in, and if you wake up the knights they're not going to thank you for it.

"You're vastly overstating the damage you're using as an excuse for this. I could easily prove that it was nothing more than some broken flagstones on the road and some scratches on the wall. That would be trivial to fix even by the shop guilds nearby. Why don't we go talk to the actual magistrates about the proper fines, hmm?"

/"Oh, I get it. All of this – it's a provocation. It's funny, maybe they actually were going to try to frame you or scam you through the Guild but you accidentally used their very own tactic against them first!"/

He scowled back at me for a few long moments, and I feared we'd have to resort to violence anyway.

But then he spat at the floor. "…. feh. I've no time for this noise. Lord Klass is nae impressed with any dang adventurers, you'll see. But I'm not gonna be stupid enough to get his attention, it's always in a bad way." 

He seemed to weigh the risks of me making some official ruckus versus the ruckus he wanted to get. Without a wrecked restaurant, he wouldn't have as much excuse for the hefty fines and the pleasure of seeing us on the rack. Once outside, adventurers would be far more easily able to overpower them, escape, and leave town with minimal damage. Just some adventurers roughing up the town guards... that was not worth the knights' time, making them chase down some miscreants on command. 

The tail should not wag the dog.

But adventurers wounding the pride of the powers of the nobility, that was another matter entirely.

He grabbed at a sandwich and motioned for the other guards to start plundering our table as well. "Count yerself lucky it's too late in the evening for me to bother dragging all of youse all the way down town!"

"Yes, that certainly is a believable excuse not to do anything," I replied neutrally.

The town guard snorted again, and then spat out a glob of phlegm at my face. "Wind," I uttered. The snot-ball was deflected off to the side. A waiter yelped out in disgust and dismay at the stain on his uniform.

"Whatever, boy. I'll be watching you. One more step out of line, and I'm tossing you into a cell, see if I don't!"

"We're just passing through, we'll be out of your hair by tomorrow." Or what's left of it, I didn't say. "And if we do meet again, I will remember you too."

Grumbling, they left the restaurant. They took whole dishes with them, and I meant including the dishes. They could probably pawn those off somewhere too.

"Honestly, such ruffians!" the waiter snorted in their wake. He glanced at our purple card and his nostrils dilated in barely-disguised disdain, but a Purple could become a Red or Silver eventually (and thus earn far more) and get famous. A town guard would always be just another trumped-up commoner.

"... I think it's great that you solved that without violence, Mister Zah," said Linze. Unlike her sister, she was much more sensible and didn't enjoy the thrill of combat and didn't hurting others even if they deserved it.

I exhaled roughly and slumped in my seat.

… yeah, this place needed a Sir Samuel Vimes far more than it needed a Batman.
