Leslie Johnson is a twenty-one-year-old college student whose past is very dark. Her mom's company hosts a party for youths her age in the small business industry where she meets the main character, Liam Sanchez, whose past is also something he would rather keep to himself. Was their meeting by fate or just by chance?

    Before entering the conference room, I changed our clothes into formal attire. Headmaster Amos, Prince Gregory, and Professor Knights are already seated on the big circular table, while the rest of the members are seated in the back seats.
  
    "It is about time, Prince Flynn and Princess Malia, please have a seat." Headmaster Amos said to us.

     "We will be divided by five teams, I will be the leader for the Chroma Team, we will be wearing blue, Ischyros Team will be led by Malia and your color is green, and the leader for Vermilion team will be Flynn and your color will be red, Neroz Team will be headed by Gregory, who will be wearing orange, while the Knight team leader is Mr. Knight himself, and your color is yellow." Headmaster Amos explained.

      "I am sorry Malia, you have to use your real family name now, no need to use your human surname, as you can see the name of the team is based on the family name of your leader to make it easy to remember whose command you are under, I would like the Leaders to please stand up." We all follow the request of the Headmaster.

      "Now as for the members I will just make a spell right now, what ever color come out from your right palm, you automatically belong to that team." He said then murmured a spell, then different colors of light come out from the palm of the remaining members." I can see the annoyance of Prince Flynn's face, and I was wondering why he suddenly got irritated, then I see the light that come out from the hand of Nick, dazzling green color continues to flow from his right hand.

    I was not able to control my laughter that made everyone looked in my direction, and there are confusions on their faces and it made Prince Flynn angrier. I bowed down my head, because Prince Flynn looks so cute when he is jealous, I never expected this to happen, to feel the overflowing love of Flynn for me.

   "Hey! Jealous much lover boy?" I asked him on his head, then he raised his head and looked at me directly, and he smiled weakly. He avoided my gaze and never looked at me again, and worse, he never answered my question, I was just trying to pacify him.

    "I am sorry Flynn, I never expected you to easily get jealous, every time you feel that way, please remember to look back what happened during the Festival Ball, so that you will realize how much you mean to me. I don't need to remind you always that you are the only one, just remember that night, even if we are far away from each other." I talked to his mind again, then before he can answer I get out of his head, and use my power to shut off everyone who has planned on talking on my head.

     I can see the effort of Flynn trying to penetrate my mind, but he will never get through my thoughts unless I allow him to. My heart is dancing with happiness due to Flynn's reaction, but I need to focus on listening to our guild leader first to be able to save King Robert, and of course, for me this mission is not only saving the King of Aeras, but I will save my parents too, whatever it takes.

   "Now team leaders, please gather your members, so that we can start our discussion about strategies and methods we should use to infiltrate the Dark Kingdom."  

    Each Leader has twenty to twenty-five members, I am so glad that Nick is with me, at least I have someone I can rely on, the problem is, Prince Flynn, who is giving Nick hard stares every time their eyes met, and Nick is enjoying the show, he is really my friend, I have to talk to them before we set off for our journey to go easy with each other.

    I raised my eyebrow on Prince Flynn, when I see Princess Suzanne seated so closely with him, I can see that he is trying to get away from her, I just shake my head, and continue familiarizing my team members. Headmaster Amos only gives us fifteen minutes to correlate with each other, because as per Prince Flynn we are fairies, and we are born smart. I was able to know my team members by simply going to their heads. I only get basic information like names, affiliations, kingdom, education, and achievements. I didn't go deeper because I promise myself to use my power fairly.

    "Any questions?" Asked the Headmaster, two hands were on the air immediately, one is Flynn, while the other is Gregory.

   "Wow, Prince Flynn and Gregory, I will never get tired of your forever competition, I don't know who to call first, you might say I am biased." The headmaster is shaking his head, and now I believe the two of them when they both tell me that they will forever be each other's opponent.

    "Okay, I will just use my magic pointer, to decide." He said, then suddenly, a stick with golden light that resembled a chopstick goes up in the air and goes directly in front of Gregory. 

    "Sorry Flynn, but Prince Gregory will ask his question first, what it is Gregory?" Asked the headmaster amused, he already knows that this will be another exciting long day.

     "Can I be a member, I would like to exchange places with my brother Nick, I want him to lead, since I know his abilities, he is also powerful, he was chosen to be Malia's protector before, that responsibility alone makes him eligible for the position as a team leader, I think it is time for Nicholas to be recognized." Gregory explained in front of us confidently, but before the Headmaster can answer, my boyfriend stood up looking at Gregory indignantly.

    "Really Prince Gregory, I know you are doing this for personal reasons." Flynn said and I can't believe that we are both thinking with the same thing, are we really that compatible with each other to think the same way?

     "Prince Flynn, I know Gregory has a point, but Prince Gregory that is the reason why Nicholas has been chosen by the green light to be with Princess Malia's team, since he has been her protector, so I think I can't allow you to swap with your brother, now Prince Flynn I want to hear your questions or concerns regarding this mission." He asked Flynn, then I couldn't believe that in front of all the members of the guild Prince Flynn's face turned red, he is really blushing.

     "Actually Headmaster Amos my request is the same with Gregory, I wanted to be on Malia's team, because we have been chosen by the magical cord recently, I don't want to be separated from her, I want to be there to protect her." He is pleading to the Headmaster, and I can feel his sincerity because I feel the same way too.

    I am not used to say what is on my mind and heart, especially in front of a large crowd. Flynn is known to be a silent type too, they said you can never tell what he is thinking, but right now he is begging just to be on my team. 

   "I am so pleased to hear that a lot of you care so much about Malia's safety and all of you are powerful fairies, thank you for your concern, but let me remind you, we are talking about the Spektra here, the only one ever born with such kind of power." The headmaster is trying to convince them to listen to his reasoning.

     "Prince Flynn and Prince Gregory the Princess does not need your protection, she can take care of herself, don't forget what she did during our last encountered with the Dark Forces, Malia were able to release all the fairies who had been tied by the dark ropes, you were there Prince Flynn what are you so afraid of?" Asked the Headmaster.

    I don't know what I feel at the moment, I am not used being the center of attention, but my heart melts when I heard Flynn's reply.

   "Never in my life I fear of losing someone, until I met her, I don't know what will happen to me if something ever happened to her, I can't forgive myself, I just want to protect her Headmaster, so please let me be with Malia, and let Nicholas be the leader of my team." Flynn is begging the Headmaster.

  "I understand your feelings Flynn, but remember your responsibilities as the Crown Prince of Erthesia, sorry but I can't grant your request, you are one of the best among all the members of the guild, we need you Flynn, anyway you are one of the persons who are tasked to get inside the Dark Kingdom and Malia too, then you will be there to assist her." 
Headmaster Amos never turns away his eyes from Prince Flynn.

   "We need to do this on my way Prince Flynn so that Malia's life will be safe forever, you know that the Dark Kingdom is willing to bargain peace in exchange for the princess, now is the time for us to attack, while they are still planning to do the same." Said Headmaster Amos giving Prince Flynn enough reason to understand, I feel sorry for my boyfriend, I can see the looked of disappointment on his face.

    Finally, Prince Flynn and Prince Gregory went back to their designated places, the Headmaster didn't give in to their request, then we started brainstorming about how to go inside the Dark Kingdom, nobody knows about the inside design of their territory, it has been a long time, since they have separated from Erthesia's union.

    They discussed different spells, but I don't have any idea of what they are talking about, I just simply listened to them, and I will try to remember everything, it could be useful for me too. It was already lunchtime, when the Headmaster allowed us to go, but he reminded us to be back after two hours of break to continue the meeting.

Book 1 and Book 2 are complete while Book 3 is ongoing.

♔Flynn (P.O.V)
It's been a week since Eustacia left.
It's also been a week without his wolf, but that doesn't bother Flynn. Although without his wolf, he can't shift back and forth freely like before, he still has his ways if it comes down to it. The answer is in a small syringe he has capped and tucked away safely in the front pocket of his blue jeans. A small yet big enough amount of Foxglove that will make him shift into his wolf once injected into his thigh, almost like an EpiPen.
The cure? That's safe with Gedeon. A small mixture of hard to come by flowers and herbs, carefully mixed by a high-rank witch. If he didn't have it, he'll be stuck that way. After all, his wolf is gone.
A werewolf's wolf counterpart leaving is a rare occurrence, but it happens. Sort of the Moon Goddesses way of repenting for what monsters she created. Only to the animal's side though the humans have no choice.
"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. Welcome to the beginning of a new order!" Flynn shouts into the wireless microphone he holds, standing in the clearing in front of the fighting pits.
The large opening is barren of trees, and only grass covers the ground, beautifully and perfectly grown. A large crowd stands in front of him and Gedeon.
Flynn wears a solid black tank top and navy blue jeans with black tennis shoes. His medium brown hair that is normally hidden by a beanie flows freely in the air.
Gedeon stands beside Flynn, his dark hair that is normally slicked back, flows freely as well. He wears a dark maroon button-up shirt with the collar carefully folded down with black jeans and dress shoes.
The cold nip in the air doesn't bother the werewolves that litter the crowd gathered around him. They all dress in short sleeves, jeans or shorts. Roughly a hundred scatter around staring at their alpha wide-eyed. All of them are sixteen even up to elders who are still able to walk and function properly.
The cold breeze bothers the other two factions loitering in the crowd, even with the afternoon sun brightly overhead. Nearly ten people are female witches, wearing solid black cloaks pulled over their heads. To keep warm, hold an orb of a fiery ball cupped in both hands. At least forty of the men and women wear heavy coats and hats that cover their ears. Crossbows strung on their backside by a strap over their shoulders. Werewolf hunters.
"We have prepared for a week. A week's worth of creating, planning, and training.
Beside me, I have my Beta Gedeon, who will lead our troops into battle. My werewolves will be armed with silver claws fashioned the same way the once-proud Shadow Thorn pack did! With one stab it opens the spring-loaded claws and releases wolfsbane into their systems, directly through their open wounds," a wicked smirk crosses Flynn's face as he waves his hands addressing the crowd.
Walking forward towards the small group of witches, who all appear to be in their twenties, Flynn smiles brightly rubbing his left pointer finger on one of the girl's right cheek. Quickly he brings his attention to the entirety of the witches with one swooping hand gesture.
"My witch friends, you will march in the very back, providing boosts to our archers and offering healing to our wounded. You have a key role in our victory!" He shouts, his voice booming through the mic.
Turning his attention to the group of hunters behind the witches, he approaches them calmly. One of the males in the front line appears to be twenty-one around Flynn's age. Dark brown hair and chocolate eyes, he wears a large brown winter coat and a white toboggan with black boots. Flynn greets the young man by a simple fist-bump and motions to the entire hunter crowd.
"Hunters! I know we have a long and brittle history, but together we can bring down this monarchy and bring a better and equal peace to our people. Instead of being forced to hide and sneak out both our parties will be free! You will march in the middle of our line, your bows will be laced with a new liquid we like to call 'Wolf Hunter.' A mixture of both silver and Wolfsbane."
Flynn walks calmly back to the front of the crowds beside Gedeon who has a serious look on his face and hasn't uttered a single word. "I will march behind you to make sure no one flanks us, and if they do they will be sorry. We leave at midnight!" He howls, nodding his head at his accomplishment as the crowd disperses.
♔Gedeon (P.O.V)
"Thank you, Gedeon," Flynn stated to him, which made guilt swell in his stomach.
"It's no problem. Um- I'm going to spend some time with Leah before we head off. . . Just in case," he smiles bleakly at him.
"That's cool, I understand," Flynn smiles, patting Gedeon on the back.
Gedeon smiles as he heads toward his bedroom. "This has gotten out of hand," he whispers to himself.

"Leah," he greets his mate as he opens their bedroom door. She's sitting on the couch in the living room, a large white clothes basket in front of her legs full of freshly dried clothing. Gently she folds them one by one and places them on the couch cushion beside her.
"Gedeon, we need to talk," she says in their mind link, motioning toward their bathroom.
"Why do you need to use the mate link?" Gedeon questions, what could be so important or secret she would need to?
"I told you I wouldn't stay if he did anything to Eustacia, and he has. I also know he fucking decapitated a grown-ass woman with his bare hands with no mercy! The rest of the pack doesn't know these things, but I do," she states sternly.
Leah was right, she had said something like that, and he agrees with her. Flynn has completely cracked, and the ordeal with decapitating Emma has proved it. Now he's going after a pack of Lycans, stronger werewolves, but even if they have strength Flynn has witches, hunters, and surprise. Something the Royals won't have.
"What do you want me to do about it? If I try to go against him, I'll die and he might go after you and I can't risk that." Gedeon murmurs, sadness filling his heart at the very thought of them harming his mate.
"Well, the answer is in the bathroom."
"What the hell is in the bathroom woman?" He asks, confusion and concern evident.
"Go look," she says shrugging as she goes back to folding clothes.
"I have an idea to get out of this mess though, Leah. Can we talk about that first?" He questions.
"After you go look."
He obeys and walks to a door directly across from the living room which is closed tight- the bathroom, and it's normally open. Opening the door he's started to see a young man sitting fully clothed, in Gedeon's clothing that swallowed the short fellow, on the toilet. The boy appeared to be around Flynn's age, with vibrant short red hair matted with leaves.
"Who the hell are you?" Gedeon asks the boy, who looks up at him, his yellow eyes make a chill run down his spine. Even without an answer, he knew what he was, and where he was possibly from. "You're a lycan."
"Yes. My name is Luka Collins, Tristen instructed me to stay behind and watch you all," he coldly states.
"You're in my bathroom, why?"
"For a week, I have run around your border and even inside it, watching as a wolf. You see, I flew in with Tristen when he came to watch the show, while I stayed in the shadows. Just in case something went wrong-"
"It did, I'm assuming."
"Yes. Tristen's father had suspicions of this pack and the things they were doing. So when Tristen took over, it was one of the first things he looked into, and everything just sort of fell into place. Then he found out his mate was one of the wolves fighting, but also was a mate to Flynn. So he made me stay to watch and report if anything happened."
"That doesn't explain why you're in my bathroom, or in my clothes," Gedeon states.
"Oh. Your mate saw me and realized where I came from. She wanted an option out so I offered to take you all back to the pack. I didn't see any harm in it, but she insisted I come back and talk to you personally- she was afraid you wouldn't agree with it," Luka says nonchalantly.
"Well, that was sort of my plan. Except this is better," Gedeon sighs, the weight being left off his shoulders. "I need to personally talk to Tristen, and we need to leave now because they leave in less than ten hours."
"Alright, it'll take a few hours to get a flight," Luka pauses as if he's thinking, "but if we run there in our wolf form, we might get there quicker. You won't need to pack anything either, they can provide clothing," he states almost reading Gedeon's mind.
"Thank you," he breathes, leaving the boy in the bathroom.
"Leah, we're leaving. We're going to warn Eustacia and her mate about what's coming," Gedeon informs his mate through their link.
"Oh, Gedeon!" She shouts loudly, dropping clothing on the floor as she runs and jumps into Gedeon's arms. "Thank you," she whispers.

Tristen Clark, the prince of all werewolves, has yet to find his mate in the last four years, nor has he had the authority to leave his homeland. Soon he will become King at a glaring cost.

Beneath the sands of Hueco Mundo, within the forest of monsters, time becomes irrelevant. Eternal night, surrounded by monsters. Truly a nightmare for the average person. Ten years, by the living world's standards, have passed since the little swordsman's brush with death. Still, it hunts and is hunted. Even as the threat of destruction at the hand of a raging Gillian looms over it, the little swordsman continues to run, to fight, to kill and to survive. 

The little Hollow kneels atop a branch, watching like a silent avenger as the Hollows beneath share in chatter, seek shelter from the stronger, even sharing meals together. Though the meals consisted of cannibalising other Hollows, the thought of Hollows behaving in a somewhat civil manner whilst revelling in their own disturbing aspirations and delusions of grandeur. The sight disgusted the little swordsman to the core, verbally realised by the low growl from beneath its mask. 

One of the Hollows, a pink-skinned creature slightly larger than the average adult male, with a long mask and a small hole in the back of its neck, opens its long mouth and lets out a silent screech. The moment the creature closes its mouth, its beady eyes immediately lock onto the small, hidden figure above them. Their eyes meet and barely a second later, the little swordsman disappears. A spray of dark red blood spews forth from the creature's neck, followed by the dolphin-like hollow vanishing from existence. Standing behind where the hollow once stood is the little swordsman, its eyes already firmly latched onto its next target.

The second of the hollow group snarls at the little swordsman. Its legs tense as the sand beneath its feet sprays backwards when the Hollow leaps towards the small attacker. The little swordsman stays motionless for a moment before a crimson light flashes from a nearby direction. The area they stood is completely annihilated by a familiar crimson blast. A gust of wind blows from the impact zone as the little swordsman reappears on a branch, closely followed by an ungodly roar. 

The little swordsman looks back to see a large white hand digging into a crystal tree as eyes, blazing with utter hatred, focus their attention on the little Hollow. The huge, lumbering creature walks forward, revealing its missing right arm, though it's cloak seems to have repaired itself. These two Hollows had been behaving like this for ten years. Ten years of hate fuelled cat and mouse. During those ten years, the little swordsman has grown stronger through battle and the constant presence of the Gillian's powerful reiatsu. More alert, thanks to its constant need to stay on guard, the Gillian refusing to give up its chase. Faster, as it runs, leaps and otherwise avoids the Gillian's onslaught. 

Overtime, this game of cat and mouse became a part of the little swordsman's life. The chase became a source of training, while the Gillian itself became a weapon for the little Hollow to use as it saw fit. Naturally, the Gillian had caught on to this, though pushed by its instinctual fury, it never strategised, never made a plan. Why would it? Its entire life spent within the forest it has been the strongest. The weak bowed down and became food while the strong ignored it completely. So why would it ever see such a small creature as a threat? Why would it allow such a creature to wound it and escape? It wouldn't. It would crush the little Hollow beneath its feet. So why? 

This game of cat and mouse would end today. Both sides had grown weary of the other. The Gillian's fury not subsided, it continues its useless assault. The little swordsman, having grown past any sense of fear it once felt from the larger Hollow. Its speed far outclassing anything the Gillian could deal with. Perhaps that's why. Why the Gillian has lost sight of its prey. Now in an area thick with crystal pillars. The perfect place for an ambush, though the Gillian had no thoughts on the matter. Its rage outmatching its intelligence tenfold. 

It lets out a cry of anger, releasing red orbs into its surroundings. The blasts wreak havoc upon the enclosed space. Hollows and lesser Gillians alike, completely eradicated by the crimson balls of fury.  The trunks of the crystal trees have already been heavily damaged by the outburst of crimson reiatsu but the little swordsman is still nowhere in sight. The Gillian lets out another screech, swinging its arm around and smashing through a nearby pillar, leaving the upper portion hanging by a thread from the forest ceiling. 

Above, the little swordsman hangs from his blade sheathed within another crystal pillar. Watching the crazed Gillian from above, it quietly removes its blade from the pillar, allowing itself to fall a short distance before its feet connect with the crystal. Now dashing down the pillar at high speeds, the little Hollow prepares its blade by its side. Its eye hole begins to glow with a silver light for a moment before It leaps, leaving a small indent in the crystal pillar as its body seems to vanish. 

Barely a moment passes when the little swordsman reappears, slicing across the Gillian's back. The giant lets out a roar of pain, twisting its body unnaturally with its arm swinging widely in an attempt to slam its attacker. The giant's hand misses its target completely as the little swordsman reappears again, this time slashing at the Gillian's upper arm, though not enough to seperate the arm from its torso. It lands on the extended arm and leaps away with haste, bouncing from branch to branch, avoiding the crimson blasts with relative ease. Each blast levels the platform the little swordsman once stood upon, gaining on the little Hollow, as though the Gillian was finally using what little remained of its brain and predicting where its target was going. Or perhaps, the Gillian was simply growing stronger, its hunt fuelling its power.

As the blasts neared their target, the little swordsman pierces its sword into a tree, using its momentum to swing itself around the trunk and launch itself off of a branch back towards the Gillian. The little Hollow bares its blade at the giant Hollow's face, however the Gillian, whether through intelligence or instinct, brings its fist skyward and slams into the little swordsman. A large shockwave emanates outwards from the little swordsman's body as it's sent towards the sandy ceiling. It lets out a pained groan as the force of the blow manages to send him through the ceiling, carving through the rock until a strange scenery fills the airborne Hollow's eyes. 

Desert as far as the eye can see, small crystalline trees dotting the landscape as the bright moon shines down upon the white sand, illuminating the barren landscape. A scenery that seems to last for hours, when in truth, only lasts for seconds as the little swordsman places its feet on thin air, rebounding at incredible speed back down into the depths of the forest. Below, the Gillian rears it's head upwards to face the rapidly approaching creature. Within seconds, the giant forms another ball of crimson reiatsu, intent on finishing their game of cat and mouse forever. 

The blast barely reaches completion as the soaring figure of the little swordsman collides with the mass of spiritual energy. The surroundings are blown back by the resulting shockwave. Crystalline trees are torn apart, causing small cave-in's while the sand below is blown away, creating a small sandstorm around them. The Gillian lets out a roar as it pushes against the little Hollow. Its opponent, clashing its blade against the crimson blast responds as its mask opens to reveal a mouth beneath, releasing an ear-piercing scream as the bones in its body begin to crack and break. 

Pushing against the torrential power of the Gillian, the little swordsman finally manages to break through, connecting its blade to the monster's face. One more, final push accompanied by a resounding roar and the Gillian's mask cracks, breaks, shatters. The little swordsman's small frame is sent flying back as the Gillian lets out its final cry of agony, falling back before dissipating entirely. 

The little swordsman on the other hand, continues to soar, eventually making contact with ground and bouncing to a stop within the trunk of a crystalline tree, shattering the trunk to the point where the little Hollow's body is completely hidden from sight.

Many years ago, back when Karakura town was nothing more than a few poorly made huts, a group of hollows, a soul reaper, and a terrified little boy meet face to face. 

Hueco Mundo is the home to hollows. 
Soul society is the home to Shinigami.
Where would one belong, when rampaging between worlds.

Arc 1: The Sword Demon of Hueco Mundo - OP: Dramaturgy - Eve. (English Ver. Jubyphonic)

The bright fiery foliage stands in stark contrast to the grey backdrop of the skies. It was as if somebody had lit a bonfire of orange, red and yellow in the branches of the trees, and Nyx tilts her head back to appreciate the beauty. In the distance, she could hear Allison's loud cheers as Flynn chased her around the yellowing grassy field.   
Thankfully, they didn't stand out much. Although they had arrived much earlier than anticipated, and it was only one o'clock in the afternoon, the park was fairly crowded. Many other families were sitting underneath the thick canopy of the trees, hosting picnics of their own. The playground area was full of little kids scampering about, and the fields were filled with people playing a variety of sports. 

"Hey!" she waves over the pair of siblings. Flynn runs over, Allison bouncing in tow. She lowers her voice when Flynn approaches. "Keep an eye out for suspicious figures."
"You're taking this really seriously," Flynn giggles. 
"It doesn't hurt to be cautious."
Allison tugs on Flynn's hand, beckoning for him to come closer. Flynn bends down, and she cups her hands to whisper something in Flynn's ear. Flynn smiles at her reassuringly and glances at Nyx. "If it's OK with you, Allison wants to play hide-and-seek."
Allison's eyes are wide with hope and Nyx smiles. "Sure!"
Flynn leans over. "She's kinda shy," he whispers. "She doesn't like talking to new people, so be patient."
"I've noticed," Nyx replies dryly. "She's very well-behaved though."
"Uh huh."

The game has begun. Nyx is designated as the seeker, and while she closes her eyes and counts to thirty, she could hear Allison's giggles and Flynn's shushing as the two rush off to find a hiding place. 
"Twenty-nine, thirty!" she announces. "Ready or not, here I come!"
Starting at the park entry, Nyx takes her time, strolling leisurely through the park. Following the paved trail, she first passes by the thick cluster of trees where she had seen many families picnicking. She takes a mental note of the bunch of low-sweeping evergreens, which could provide a good hiding place if they could squeeze between them. 
The fields that lay beyond the treeline were out of the question -- there was practically no cover to be seen. Nyx shakes her head, sighing. The park didn't have any good hiding places. Perhaps they'd have to take the other route of using disguises to hide their identities from the other competitors' prying eyes. 
She absentmindedly continues her act of searching for the siblings when a rustling in the bushes near the playground catches her eye. She walks towards it, and peeks over, finding the two siblings crouched underneath its branches. "Found you!" she calls playfully. 
"How did you find us?" Allison pouts. "Our hiding place was so good!"
"Next time, try not to move so much." Nyx teases. "You have to be very still and silent. Then you'd be impossible to find!"
Allison tugs on Flynn's shirtsleeve. "Yeah Flynn! Next time, don't move so much!"
"Sorry," he says sheepishly. "It was too uncomfortable."
"Do you want to play again?" Nyx asks Allison. 
"Yes!"

And so time flies, playing hide and seek. Soon it turns into a game of tag and as the trio chase each other around the fields, Nyx momentarily forgets all about the Game. She enjoys the mindless, childish fun and she feels the lightest that she had felt in a long time. 

Flynn is the "it" this time, and after having indulged his little sister for a couple of minutes before finally tagging her, the real game is on. 
For the past 10 minutes,  he had been in pursuit of Nyx. The two had raced around the park, and Nyx did whatever she could to dodge Flynn. Presently, she had climbed up the playground structure to avoid him. He clambers up the ladder and pounces at her, but she's already sliding down the slide, away from his grasping hands. She turns back to wave tauntingly at him before sprinting towards the wooded area. 
She could hear the thumping footsteps of her pursuer close behind her as she weaves around the trees. The exertion is getting to her, and she's panting hard. Her pace is definitely slowing. She glances back to gauge the distance left between her and Flynn, and finds that he is quickly gaining on her. His stamina far outstrips hers, but she hasn't given up yet. She ducks beneath a tree branch and leaps over a hedge of bushes, landing nimbly on the other side. Without waiting, she leaps at the tall chain-link fencing bordering the park and the sidewalk and quickly scales up to the pointy top. She swings her body over to the other side and jumps down, landing safely in a crouch. 
Just in time too, as Flynn pulls up short at the fence. He harrumphs, annoyed. "You're out of bounds!"
"We never set any boundaries."
He stares incredulously at Nyx. "How am I supposed to climb over that thing?"
Nyx shrugs. "Guess you'll never catch me."
"That's unfair! Unlike you, I'm not secretly a monkey!"
"And unlike you, I'm no human-horse hybrid with a ridiculous amount of stamina," Nyx retorts. "I just made use of my natural abilities. If you want to catch me, you could always try climbing up the fence yourself. It's not that hard," she adds, a little smugly if she were to be honest. 
Flynn eyes the fence warily before shaking his head. "I don't wanna break my bones."
"So do you give up?"
"Yeah, you win," he concedes grudgingly. 

Accepting his admission of defeat, Nyx climbs back over the fence and swings to the other side
'It's getting dark," Flynn remarks. "Don't you have to work?"
Nyx checks the time on her phone. "4:43," she announces aloud. "I have some time left."
They spot Allison sitting alone on a swing in the playground, feet dangling. She's watching the other children playing with a wistful expression. Nyx feels a tug of guilt for leaving her alone for so long, and runs the rest of the way to her, waving enthusiastically.  
"Allison!" she calls. 
Allison brightens when she hears Nyx. "You came back!"
"Of course," Nyx replies. "We wouldn't abandon you. Flynn," she turns in the direction they came from. "Do you…" she trails off. 
Flynn is standing in the distance, gaze focused on a point beyond the park entrance. 
Nyx's shoulders tense. Could there be something strange going on?
"Come on," Nyx says, grabbing Allison's hand. They run towards Flynn.
Nyx cranes her neck, trying to see for herself what Flynn was so fixated on. She could have sworn that there was a dark lone figure standing at the park entry, but when she squinted her eyes, the figure vanished. Nyx slows, confused, and Allison's hand slips out of hers as the little girl runs ahead to her big brother. 
"Flynn!" Allison calls.
Flynn doesn't respond. 
"Flynn?" Allison repeats inquiringly. 
Nyx has caught up to them by now. She taps Flynn on the shoulder. "Earth to Flynn!"
"Huh?" At the touch, he snaps to attention. 
"Is something the matter? You look rather pale."
"So pale!" Allison chimes in. 
"N-no, I'm fine."
Nyx tries to follow his gaze, but still she could see nothing. She lowers her voice. "Did you see another player? Did you recognize someone?"
Flynn shakes his head. 
Nyx frowns. Flynn was a terrible liar. It's obvious from the slight tremble of his hands and the pallor of his skin that he was hiding something from her. 
"Are you sure?" she pressures. "If someone is spying on us and causing trouble, then we can figure this out together."
"Somebody's causing us trouble?" Allison asks worriedly. 
Flynn lets out a forced laugh. "You guys are worrying too much. I'm fine. Nothing happened. See?" he waves generally around. "I don't think there's anybody weird. What about you? Has anybody caught your attention?"
"No," Nyx responds. "Everybody looks fine."
"That's great," Flynn replies brightly -- too brightly, Nyx notes suspiciously, in comparison to how anxious he'd been moments earlier. She decides to let it go for now. She would ask him about it later when he was no longer accompanied by his sister and felt more comfortable. For now, she decides to follow his flow. 
"It's a possibility that we weren't thorough enough though." She scratches her chin. "We got distracted -- there could be people hiding amongst the crowd," she scratches her chin. "Shall we try investigating?"
"You're overthinking this!" Flynn objects, laughing. "After all, it's only going to be a meeting."
"It could dissolve into chaos. It's better to be prepared, just in case." 
"But how is knowing their looks going to help us?"
"What meeting?" Allison's high voice pipes up. "I want to come!"
Flynn kneels down beside her and bops her nose. "It's for school, so you cannot come." he says sternly, waving his finger. 
"Aw," she whines. "But I want to see Nyx again!"
"Huh?" Nyx says, confused. She points at herself. "Me?"
"Yeah!" Allison nods. 
"But we've just met…"
"You're fun!" Allison declares. "So I want to play with you more!"
Flynn whispers over his shoulder. "Since she doesn't meet a lot of new people, she grows to like people really easily. Don't question it."
Nyx had forgotten the innocence of childhood, and the trusting nature of children, having not been around them for so long. Their unrelenting brightness was admittedly a breath of fresh air.
She leans down to Allison. "I promise to visit often, so you don't have to worry." 
"Really?" 
"Really."
Allison cheers. 
"Alright, alright," Flynn says. "Nyx has to work soon. We should go home."

Nyx, an orphaned teen, finds a single mysterious card left behind on the sidewalk. Unbeknownst to her, this would be her invitation to participate in a competition to obtain her greatest wish. 

Through this game of betrayal and trust, where the cards become the players and the players become the cards, will she be able to make it out and claim the seat of the coloured joker? Exactly what will it take to win?


London in the day was a bustling city with carriages speeding along the cobblestoned streets and women selling flowers in heavily perfumed baskets while the crowds perused the shops and paid calls on friends. But as darkness fell, shadows could play tricks on the eyes of those foolish enough to walk the streets after the sun dropped beneath the horizon.
And I am one of those fools.
Gillian Beaumont squinted at the nearest alley, swallowing hard and holding back a scream of fear every time she thought she saw something fluttering in the mews like a bat's wings. The coach she had taken to the Temple Bar district was already rattling away, leaving her alone. The leaves of the early fall scuttled along the ground, tangling in her skirts like brown spiders, making her jump. She gripped her gown below her knees and gave the fabric a shake, trying to loosen the dried leaves from her dark purple satin gown. Then she faced her surroundings. She stood on the street close to the Royal Courts of Justice and the entrance to Twinings tea shop.
Through the heavy gloom she could see the gilded sign that read Twinings, and she could just make out the two Chinese gentlemen sculpted into the stone above the tea shop's name. Their faces seemed fierce in the shadows, and Gillian looked away, turning her attention to the tall black form of the griffin statue that now looked more like a dragon because the shadows played tricks on her eyes.
In that moment she wished she was back in her warm bed. Asleep. Asleep and dreaming of one particular man and the stolen kisses they'd shared that kept pushing into her consciousness.
James Fordyce. The Earl of Pembroke was a dashing gentleman with a heart of gold and the warmest brown eyes she'd ever seen. She could still feel her hands threading through the strands of his dark hair as he kissed her in the corner of a bookshop and whispered poetry to her. He was everything she'd dreamed of but could never have. She was a servant and could be nothing more than that. A pang deep in her chest made her catch her breath, but she straightened her shoulders, shrugging off the pain, something she'd been trained to do for many years.
As dangerous as a dream of James was to her equilibrium, it was a far sight safer than what she was currently engaged inchasing after her wild, headstrong mistress, Audrey Sheridan.
Audrey was this very night attempting to expose a group of scoundrels who belonged to a hellfire club known as the Unholy Sinners of Hell. Such a dreadful name for a dreadful group of gentlemen. As a lady's maid, Gillian's duties ought to have been limited to tasks like dressing Audrey, preparing her for the day, and coming up with new ways to style her hair. She should not be sneaking about the Strand after dark in a domino half mask and a dark purple evening gown with an impossibly low bodice, searching for a group of dangerous men who were rumored to seduce virgins and make sacrifices to the devil.
"Heavens, Audrey, what have you gotten us into?" Gillian muttered to herself. She hastily examined the addresses of the buildings nearby, recalling the location from a letter Audrey had shown her earlier that morning which contained directions to the club.
The letter said the club was inside a tall white building two doors down from Twinings tea shop. The door knocker was an iron gargoyle's face sneering at all visitors. As she reached the rather unremarkable structure that supposedly housed a den of devil worshipers, Gillian studied the door. Her heart tripped a few beats as nerves threatened to freeze her in place.
There was no other option than to go inside. Audrey, her wayward mistress, was also her friend, and earlier that evening she had promised Gillian she would not go to this place. Yet when Gillian had awoken and found Audrey gone, she knew where her mistress must have gone.
She lied to me. No doubt out of some silly notion that she's protecting me, but she isn't.
Gillian would have charged into the fires of hell to protect her mistress. They were the same age, only nineteen, and in another life they might have been close friends, meeting for tea at Gunter's or going off to balls together. 
In another life If she had been born an heiress to her deceased father's estate instead of the daughter of an earl's mistress.
Her half brother, Adam, was now the Earl of Morrey, and her half sister, Caroline, didn't even know she existed. The previous Earl of Morrey had been careful in keeping his longtime mistress, Gillian's mother, well set up in a house in Mayfair and had even seen to Gillian's education, but even with such aid, her future had held limited options.
Gillian raised a gloved hand to the grotesque gargoyle and rapped the knocker twice loudly. Her breath held fast in her lungs, and she waited, her body shaking at the thought of the nature of the men inside. When the door finally opened, a grim-faced butler looked her up and down, before his lips curled back in a cruel smile.
"A little late, but 'tis no matter. They've plenty of energy tonight to see to every lady." He waved for her to enter. Gillian hesitated before taking a tentative step forward. Her skin crawled as the butler came too close when he closed the door, sealing her inside. She tried not to think about what his greeting suggested.
"This way." The butler led her down the corridor to a chamber and opened a door for her to enter. The drawing room, if indeed it could be called that, was outlandishly decorated with dark brocade furniture and red satin walls. These dubious men were certainly trying to create a sinful and seductive atmosphere, but rather than tasteful, it seemed crass. Yet they were clearly prepared for guests. A fire was lit, and a tea tray was on the table.
"Freshly brewed," the butler assured her. "Help yourself. When they are ready, you will be summoned."
Gillian murmured her thanks and settled herself on the couch. She reached up again to make sure the domino mask hadn't slipped. It was still fixed securely over her features.
Where was Audrey?
She had left half an hour before Gillian woke, according to the other servants in the Sheridan household. Had she sought out the protective escort of Charles Humphrey as she'd said she planned to? Gillian dearly hoped so. Otherwise, Audrey was putting herself at great risk. The Earl of Lonsdale was an eminently trustworthy gentleman, but he had a wicked reputation that would allow him entry to this club.
Earlier that day Gillian and Audrey had been warned by a man of their acquaintance not to seek out this hellfire club tonight. One of its members, Gerald Langley, had vowed vengeance upon Audreyor rather, upon Lady Society, Audrey's anonymous identity as the writer of a social column. She had destroyed his reputation. Her remarks in the Lady Society column had been accurate and honest, but the outright cut direct from all of the ton against Langley had made him desperate for revenge. 
Fortunately, he did not know Audrey was Lady Society; that was at least one small blessing. But Audrey and Gillian had been warned that Langley would lure Lady Society to his devil's lair with the threat of debauching virgins against their will, among other things, and Audrey was not the sort of woman to turn back on a challenge. But they'd had a plan, one they'd made together earlier that morning. They were to reach out to a few female members of that silly hellfire club and switch places with them for a proper payment. Yet after the adventures of the day and the dangers Gillian had faced when a man had attacked her, a man she suspected was in league with Gerald Langley, Audrey had promised to abandon the plan of going to the club tonight. Yet when Gillian had woken from her rest, she'd found her mistress gone. Had Audrey contacted one of those women? Surely she had.
Gillian stood and paced about the room, worry growing in the pit of her stomach. She didn't like that she was alone and liked even less that she didn't know where Audrey was. They were supposed to be here together, facing the dangers of this club side by side. She bit her lip nervously and after a moment decided to have a quick cup of tea. She hastily prepared a cup and drank it, hoping to calm her nerves. Then she set it down, hating the bitterness and wishing there had been sugar, but there hadn't even been a pitcher of milk. Only true devils would serve tea without access to milk and sugar.
Gillian was unable to ignore the stifling heat from the fire. The house around her was silent except for the occasional bark of distant male laughter from another room. Each time she heard that sound she tensed.
Part of the wall suddenly detached and revealed itself to be a door. A figure in black breeches, a white shirt, and a black waistcoat emerged. He wore a domino mask that had the delicate outline of a devil's features painted in red over the black.
"Good evening, my dear," the man purred as he held out a hand to her. His long fingers were white and strangely menacing.
Gillian gulped. "My friend and I were supposed to be here together. She will be wearing a red dress. Has she arrived yet?"
"Ah" The man's lips twitched. "The lady in the red dress. She is here, waiting for you." The mask did little to hide the cruelty in his eyes, and she shivered.
"Waiting?" Gillian wished she had even a tiny inkling of what was about to happen, but she didn't. She was running headlong into this dark and dangerous world of devils.
The man curled the fingers of his still-open hand, beckoning her. "Yes, we are about to begin the feast."
Gillian came toward him, and he reached down and took one of her gloved hands. She allowed him to lead her into darkness.

James Fordyce, the Earl of Pembroke, stared at the card tables in the private gathering place of what London knew existed only in rumors. The Wicked Earls' Club. Members could be identified by a small silver pin they wore in their cravats. Once it had been a guild of prominent and powerful men who met in secret to make deals and curry favor, but their purpose had dissolved into a more corrupt world. It was not a place of malevolence or evil, but as James considered the men around him, their eyes locked on the flipping cards, the bottles abundant on the tables and the occasional woman draped over men's arms, breasts spilling over to please the eyes of every man in the room, there was a darkness of a kind here. The darkness that came from broken lost souls.
Souls like mine.
A dark figure loomed in the back of the room, and James recognized him, the leader of their club, the Earl of Coventry. Coventry gave James a small nod in silent greeting. James returned the nod and surveyed the room again. The ranks of the club had thinned in recent years, and he smiled at the thought of so many of his friends settling down with wives. Marriage to good women had a way of keeping men away from clubs like these.
"Coventry looks pleased with himself," someone muttered beside James. To his left he saw his friend Pierce Chamberlain, the Earl of Wainthorpe. 
"Wainthorpe, I didn't expect to see you tonight. I thought you were among those lucky enough to be basking in marital bliss."
Wainthorpe cracked a smile, which lightened the small scar of his temple. "I will agree to the bliss, but if you dare breathe a word to anyone" Wainthorpe growled.
James chuckled at his friend's reaction. Wainthorpe acted rough but was one of the most softhearted men James had ever met.
"Your secret is safe with me," James promised. "What did you mean about Coventry?"
Wainthorpe crossed his arms and scowled. "Every time one of us gets leg-shackled, he starts grinning from ear to ear as though he played some part in our marriage or is somehow profiting from it. Damned odd."
For a moment neither man spoke. "What brings you here tonight, Pembroke?"
"Trying to drown my sorrows," James replied sardonically, but bitterness clung to his words because they were true. Earlier that day he had met the most wonderful woman and then promptly lost her. Gillian Beaumont was a complete mystery to him, and he feared he might never see her again.
"Oh Lord, come and have a drink with me and tell me all about it. As a married man, I can offer solid advice on the fairer sex. None of it will be worth a halfpenny, though." 
Wainthorpe's teasing made James smirk again. They took two chairs at a table far enough away from the men playing cards that they could speak without being distracted by the games. A bottle of scotch sat on a silver tray with several glasses, and Wainthorpe poured them both a healthy amount of the drink. They clinked their glasses in a toast, and each took a sip.
"So let's hear about your sorrows."
James sighed. "I met a woman today at a modiste's shop. I was with my sister, Letty, and we made the acquaintance of Miss Gillian Beaumont. You don't happen to know her, do you?" He'd spent all evening asking everyone he knew if the name was familiar, and so far no one had given him any positive responses.
"Beaumont?" Wainthorpe rolled the name over on his tongue, tasting it. "I knew a man named Beaumont, the Earl of Morrey. His son, Adam, is now carrying the title. Decent fellow. His sister is quite lovely, but her name is Caroline. Not Gillian."
"A distant cousin, perhaps?" James wondered aloud.
"Perhaps." Wainthorpe poured himself another drink. "I could put my cousins on the matter. They're quite good at tracking ladies down."
James snorted. "Lord save anyone who tried to hide from your formidable but lovely cousins." James hastened to add the last bit lest he upset his friend.
"So the woman has you tied in knots, you say?"
"Yes." Tied in knots was the right way to put it. After stealing a few kisses in a bookshop, he could still feel her lips against his own like a phantom presence, and her sweet taste still haunted him. Had finding her been simply a matter of curiosity driven by lust, that would have been one thing, but he had a dreadful feeling that she was in grave danger. And he couldn't bear the thought of that, not if it was in his power to protect her. 
Earlier that evening, he'd escorted her home after she'd received a letter at Gunter's. When he'd let her out of the coach, she'd been attacked by a lowly coward of a man and rendered unconscious, and the letter she'd received had been stolen. When James had pressed her for details, she'd refused to share anything with him. He'd had no choice but to drop her off at the townhouse of a friend, Viscount Sheridan, and then she'd vanished. He intended to seek out Cedric Sheridan tomorrow and ask who his mysterious guest was and why she might be in danger.
"Well, you can begin your quest tomorrow, eh? You don't want to be out on the streets tonight. Gerald Langley, the one from the Lady Society column, is meeting with that hellfire club he runs. Sometimes that lot gets a bit unruly and takes to the streets. Anyone in their path can find themselves in danger. They almost killed a man a few months ago. They were ready to throw him in the Thames until the Bow Street Runners came upon the scene."
"What? That's awful!" James remembered reading something about that Langley fellow. The man had made a wager with James's blood froze in his veins. Langley had made a hefty wager to anyone who would seduce a lady named Alexandra Rockford. 
James's friend Ambrose Worthing had taken up the wager, but only in order to spare the lady, and he'd later confessed his involvement in the Lady Society column. That column had irreparably damaged Langley's name. Langley had been spreading rumors around town that he would not only unmask Lady Society but do her harm as well. 
And today, Ambrose Worthing had given Gillian a note that had resulted in her being attacked. Surely shecan't be Lady Society?
"Where does Langley's hellfire club meet?" James demanded, praying Wainthorpe would know.
"On the Strand, or so I hear. Nasty devils. Langley likes to lure virgins to the meetings with promises of finding wealthy husbands, and well, you know" Wainthorpe didn't finish, but his dark scowl told James everything he needed to know.
James leapt from his chair. "I've got to go. Thank you for the drink." 
"Where are you going?" Wainthorpe stood with him, worry knitting his brows.
"To stop Langley. I have a suspicion my mysterious Miss Beaumont might be Lady Society."
"What?" Wainthorpe gaped. "Do you need me to come with you?"
