Night came and she was taking care of the two children by telling them a story. The king would also come over to the children's room. To put it nicely, he was here to spend time with his children as father and sons.
It might have been because of the king's presence, but Jing Xi felt like she didn't know how to tell the story anymore. So as to not cause them to become bored, Jing Xi intentionally said, "Little princes, do you guys want to listen to an even better story?"
"Yes! We want to listen to it!" the two children shouted energetically.

The children started to listen earnestly. Jing Xi was also listening. She realized the story the king told was very enjoyable. The reason it sounded so good might be because of his attractive voice.
As Little Grape listened to it, he thought of an idea. "Dad, can you lie down to tell your story?"
He hoped his dad could also lie beside them to tell them stories.
"Okay then!" This was exactly what Huo Yunshen wanted so he took advantage of the moment and came to lie down.
He leaned against the front of the bed and pressed against Little Grape and Little Apple. Coincidentally, Jing Xi, who was at the side, was also within his vision.
There were two children between them but the distance couldn't be considered far.

Together, the two children made her stay. Huo Yunshen also said, "Since the children don't want you to leave, then just stay and lie down!"
"This…" Jing Xi looked at the big bed and hesitated, thinking about what she should do.
"I am the king and even I don't mind, so what is there for you to feel concerned about? I asked you to lie down, so just lie down!" Huo Yunshen intentionally spoke more forcefully so that it sounded like an order.
Jing Xi had no choice but to obediently go lie back down. And so, two adults lay down side by side with two children.
While Huo Yunshen slowly told the story, he would occasionally glance at the children and the woman who was directly in front of him.

Secondly, there was Little Red Mushroom. It was a stage name. She, too, was a female children's fairy tale author. The sales of her books were inferior to Tao Xueru, but the most famous fairy tale in the country was hers.

The both of them were practically propping up about half of the children's fairy tale industry in the country.

There were other children's literature authors. Many authors of fairy tales that people were familiar with when they were young had submitted their stories to the essay competition.

The ranking was as follows.

Little Red Mushroom: 28,018 votes.

Tao Xueru: 24,311 votes.

Old Lee: 17,223 votes.

Zhang Qiang: 16,976 votes.

For the story competition, the authors who submitted their works would show their verified status. For example, Little Red Mushroom and company all had their verified status. Zhang Qiang, who was ranked at fourth place, was a children's literature author. Only Old Lee, who was in third place, was not in the industry. In his verification status, there was written "Office Employee".

Zhang Ye flipped through the stories. Ever since the world changed into a different world, Zhang Ye always had a feeling of looking down upon others. Life never came easily for Dino.
Everything he did would 99 percent of the time fail.
Everyone he cared for would abandon him, in one way or another.
Money would pretty much run off on its own, somehow.
The only thing that came easy to Dino was dying.
But for all the times Dino died, he would never stay dead.
His death count at the time he was twenty one had already hit seven.
Doctors would always say what a miracle it was, the fact that he'd revive himself from death every single time but to Dino it was a curse.
The only peace.
The only tranquility. 
The only time he felt like everything would be okay was when he was dead, as odd as that sounds.
The quietness of death was comforting to him.
Don't get me wrong, Dino never tried to kill himself; it was just his bad luck.

But he'd still keep himself busy.
At care homes, helping the elderly.
At the local orphanage, teaching the older children basic maths, English and some history and geography.
For the younger children he'd read stories or make them up.
Stories of gallant heroes, god-like adventures and super powered beings from otherworld's.
It was fair to say that the children, old and young loved him but as did everyone else in his life, they would eventually leave and he'd still be stuck; never going forward or backwards.
Time rolled by.
Dino was 23.
He was still helping out at care homes and at the orphanage.
But the difference between when he was 21 and 23 was simply success.
When he was 22 he had decided to write the stories, he'd told the children over the years down into books and their success exploded.
Selling millions of copies all over the world.
Some had even been turned into movies and comics.
Gaining success similar to the marvel movies and comics.
Fanfiction had even started to be written about them, which Dino had to admit he enjoyed reading.
So let's just say he wasn't short on money.

They all knew where it came from, their big brother Dino or that's at least what all of them had taken to calling him.
He still read to the younger children and taught the older children which they all seemed to listen to more than their actual teachers.
The only down side to all to the last few years was the fact that Dino's heart condition had become more life-threatening.
How you ask?
Unlike before, where there was only a chance of him dying at any moment; now it was almost a certainty. Although he was safe as long as he didn't physically stress his body, which was pretty simple with his current lifestyle.
Well that's what he thought anyway.

When your luck is so bad you die 11 times by the age of 23. Most people would give up but not Dino. He kept walking forward despite all the obstacles placed before him. Helping people as he went. When he finally died he was given a chance at a new life with some perks. Which he embraced wholeheartedly. Follow him as he journey's in this new world, he now calls home.

Growing up the stories use to scare us. leaving this scar of fear to the thing that makes the bump sound at night. 

How evil will evolve and become powerful enough to change you. 
There were stories of how these beasts came about in my culture and it was gained by a murderous intent. People have tested the story and only caused themselves harm. Why anyone would want that trait I don't not know?

Becoming older while growing to be wiser, attaining balance on mind body and spirit became more of curious mystery with a feeling to solve.. understanding and accepting that all can evolve. That peace is an attribute.

In our clan our generation origins are passed down through the daughters, we inherit our mothers blood. 
She is the giver of who we are to become. To carry on the tradition.
When my mom talked about animals and become one with our spirit we though more simple, be good to everyone, respect everything. 
So when she would talk about how beautiful animals were, what they look like in the forest. How they look when they jump and run almost inspired us to ignore the rest of the story get up and take a nature walk to see what she see's...
How inspired it made u feel about loving life, all of it. The smell the weather the way the trees sounded the amount of animals that can change how u take in one moment. 
She would mention how beautiful a deer was wonder in the world, how they see the light and hear every sound and the wonders of what a puma must feel being wild it's feet going anywhere, no wall to stop a run and the withdraw was a vacation from crowd, how a wolf strength and love was so strong the wonderful smells the earth puts off, how sweet streams must taste to a wolf. She made it sound like a dream a beautiful dream.
She loved animals. She loved nature. She was the light that grounded us the compass to where our hearts would lead us. 
We've heard the myth of shapeshifters, howlers, skin-walkers, werewolves. Science dismisses them. So there stories become horror stories Amongst the common people. 
Mother never cared for movies because of this. Anymore that had those in the synopsis she refused for us to watch or read about. It didn't stop us from being curious. 
We were away it was part of the religion to fear. 
The reason it was always a backstory was do to the people who were murdered to be given and evil gift they didn't receive.

Our heritage was such a dominate lifestyle. How we treat each other and show our love for one another. 
It's filled with stories and origins. Tales of what can be. 
How our life in this glitter world is to provide life's gifts, the greatness of what people can become. The effort and pull between good and evil was another life, we must preserve the story of how good prevailed and with it a present was given to the first women. She was the deity. The one to restore goodness in this world. 
How we mustn't throw it away because of greed. We mustn't let this world go because we might not be able climb our way out to the next.

Moms clans start of when the first entered, she was taken by others who hadn't discovered what they could become yet. Her gift were taken advantage of. She became a warrior or which we strive to as women . She lead the people who adopted her to a better place to live good lives. 
The story wasn't happy. As she got stronger those who followed her developed hate and jealousy. They wanted what she had. The tricked her into giving them the gift. Drinking all of her life force like it was a the only way to attain . There actions lead to a lack or protection, she was their savior, their compass to where life can exists. She had been teaching them how to evolve, to become better beings within themselves. She was already trying to show them how a gift  can be earned. She was willing teach it, but she found out to late that her gift was her own, that she could change people's perception of respect. Her influence only changed a few. People who admired her courage. Respected her actions as an orphan who lead and protected a clan that she was not born into. 

Before she died the children in her care two of whom were her own children in all the braves were a number of 9. 7 given to the clan after being outcasted . They held her power because she raised them. She fed them, she taught them how to survive, how to read the land and smell the weather. She gave them the steps and traits to evolve into her family. 

They were casted out after. Those who respected and trusted her with all they had followed them. The start of her clan lead by her adopted and born children. They held ideas of what we can be as people. As a clan they were formidable in battle, respect in all families, gave without return. Encouraged and never lied to themselves.
Followed instinct and trust intuitions. They relied only on self obedience to maintain peace within the clan. Ages pass and the clan still takes these teachings and they pass it down to the children. We're taught the first law she had provided, only applying to ourselves and no one else. As individuals we encourage ourselves to follow them. 
The world has changed since then, cities, towns, skyscrapers, national parks, its been so long and those stories old enough to be before settlements happened. How wonderful it might have been to have seen that the world in that time. The simple wonderful life.

These are just stories, told mostly by my mother. How it's the origins of our clan. My grandmother tried to tell us but she never would go into detail, I never meant my great grandmother so her stories never made it to our ears. My father parents had stories to, they were as wondrous as my mothers. How they explain the life force of animals and how beautiful the weather felt, it seemed like they had this deep understanding of life, a connection to anything that had electricity. 
I envied they're voice, there deep focused eyes when the paragraphs  entangled with visions because it made sense. Life was right when they spoke of this.


"Mrs. Fuentes!" I perk up as my name is called out in a small child-like voice. "Can you tell us a story?"
I smile warmly and settle onto my bench under the shadowy canopy of our rooftop paradise. A class of around twelve children sits in front of me, a blending of schools from Sector One and Sector Thirteen. Over the years we discovered what a benefit it was to have the children go on field trips and learn together. As the threat of Primitives grew less and less, we started taking groups of children beyond the wall, out into the desert so they can experience the bounty of our planet beyond Sanctuary. 
Today they are on my rooftop learning about the value of greenhouses and hearing sensational stories of their mighty Warlord and his rebellious wife, the Desert Wren. I hadn't intended to discuss our past with them, but then I'd broken down and told a few stories. It's good for them to understand what sparked the rebellion and how we managed to resolve it.
I'm surprised and pleased that these children know of my old nickname. Either they are taught about us in school or their parents are gossiping. But it's harmless, since our story has a happy ending. Or I should say middle, since our story is by no means done yet.
"Of course, I'll tell you a story," I say, sitting on the warm bench near the ledge looking out over our Sanctuary. Diogo built a higher fence on it so none of the children can climb up and accidentally fall. "Have you heard the story of Stryker and Abrielle?" A few nod, but most tell me no, I haven't told them this one yet. "Well, let me tell you then. Stryker was a mighty warrior, almost as mighty as our Warlord. He was happily married to the lovely Abrielle in the San Antonio Sanctuary..."
I tell them of Stryker's story, giving them every detail I remember, a story that I repeat over and over, along with all the other stories I've gathered. I tell them the sad along with the happy, though I do make sure I'm speaking in age appropriate terms. I have made it my mission to collect and tell stories, to encourage others to remember and repeat these stories. Paper is scarce, as is our ability to record information that isn't absolutely necessary. Thus we are using the tradition of oral storytelling, a practice used by many cultures before writing was developed. The oral tradition conveys generations of information that might otherwise become lost. I talk about Emery often, Garrett, Talon, Stryker, Jorje Cruz, Victoria Greystone, my parents, my grandparents, everyone.
I talk with the children, telling them stories and then listening to theirs, laughing and clapping with them. Time and again my gaze is drawn to one little boy with his cap of dark hair and penetrating grey eyes. His expression is so solemn, but I know he is just thinking, processing everything we say and turning it over in his intelligent little mind. I know this because I am his proud mama.

Soon the children are gathered up and taken back to their schools, an echo of 'thank you's' thrown back at me as they leave. I wave to them and tell them to be careful on their trek back down the stairs.
"Mama." I look down as my four-year-old daughter grips the edge of my shirt and scowls up at me.
"Yes, Rayne?"
"When can I go to school?"
I smile at her and gently remind her that she has one more year before she's old enough. She's been asking this question almost every day for two years as she watches her brother leave the apartment each morning with Diogo where he will be dropped at his school with his bodyguard Karl in tow. Rayne hates being separated from her older brother. And he is, of course, patiently wonderful with his demanding little sister.
I sit on the warm patio tiles and pull Rayne down onto my lap. Together we pull a pot toward us. A tomato pot that we planted only the week before.
"Look at the tiny little sprout," I point out to her.
"Your favourite, mama," she says happily digging her fingers into the dirt next to mine.
"Yes, my favourite," I say with a grin and drop a kiss on the soft red flyaway hair.
Together we sit out there in the warm sunshine planting more for our rooftop garden and talking about her desire to adopt one of the city animals. I laugh at her childish arguments. They need homes. Aren't they cold in the barns? Wouldn't the baby chicks be more comfortable set loose in her bedroom?
"But what about Skye?" I ask her, trying to divert her attention. "I don't think she would like to share her home with another animal. She's kind of a loner."
We both look up at the bird chirping in the foliage above our heads. The desert wren that comes back every year to visit and recreate her nest. The first time she came to us I'd been stunned and had exclaimed excitedly to Diogo that somehow our bird had found us. He was sceptical and dismissed my fanciful idea, saying it was a different bird. But I know it's her, my original Skye, my sweet little desert wren.
I know, because she came to me two weeks before I gave birth to my daughter. I was terrified about something happening. The stress of Blaze's birth left its mark on me, one that I will never get over. That stress caused complications in my second pregnancy. But the moment I saw that bird I knew I wasn't alone. We were two mothers who had found our Sanctuary. I spent every moment I could watching her build her nest and lay her eggs, taking comfort in the normal instinct-driven routine. Then it was time for me to give birth.
Bishop came to our apartment and, with Diogo at my side the entire time, I birthed our daughter in the comfort of my own bed. As we looked down at our brand-new daughter together, I couldn't help but feel an intense hope. Hope for us, for humans, as we begin to flourish once more. Only this time we will do better, we'll learn from our mistakes and nurture a healthy and strong world that our children will be proud to live in. 
"I don't think Skye cares if we have baby chicks," Rayne pouts. "She's just a bird."
"She's more than a bird, sweetheart, she's a symbol."
"What's that?"
I explain to her about my belief that Skye is a symbol of our healing planet, that she comes to us each year to show us that our natural world is still producing miracles, still surviving despite what humans have done to it and ourselves. Eventually she will learn in school about the rise of the Primitives and the hand that humans had in the spread of the disease. Most historians believe that Necrotitis Primeval could have been stopped in its infancy if humans had taken a different path.
For now, we compromise, and I agree to take her to the farm tomorrow so we can play with the baby chicks. A reasonable compromise to having chicken poop all over her bedroom.
Later, as I lay in bed with Diogo, our children safely in their beds, I make slow leisurely love to him, worshipping his body with my tongue and hands. With every sweep of my hands on his body I tell him of my love for him, with every kiss I thank him for my life and my children. And as I mount him and take him into my body, his hands on my hips, the entire world fades to just the two of us. Time stands still as we move together, coming together in an explosive climax. He catches my face between his palms and kisses me with the fierce love that has grown brighter and hotter with each passing year.
We hold each other after, no words between us. Only our breaths mingling until they slow as we close our eyes on the gift of another day, the gift of Sanctuary.
