The BattleTech universe

Inception and evolution of this universe : BattleTech eras
In its earliest descriptions in the Battledroids rulebook in  the game was set around the year 3025 in the Succession Wars era, a dystopic future where centuries of warfare following the demise of the once-mighty Star League had all but destroyed mankind's previous achievements. Advanced technology was not understood anymore. Vehicles and machinery could hardly be maintained, and ritualized wars were fought over ancient spare parts or even water.

This state of affairs obviously left little room for evolution. Add-on publications for the game soon downplayed the technological decline more and more. Functional factories were mentioned that could even produce new 'Mechs. An early novel, The Price of Glory, culminated in the recovery of an intact Star League era memory core to explain how lost technology was subsequently recovered. This and the Fourth Succession War concluded the earliest storylines.

The entire setting was then moved forward one generation, to the Clan Invasion era that began in 3050. The invasion by an unknown enemy from beyond known space started an all-new story arc with numerous new factions, and a technological renaissance allowed the game to be expanded with additional rules and units. Over the next decade the universe quickly achieved, even surpassed the Star League-era level of technology. Weapon systems of all forms and sizes, right up to WarShips, became available in increasing numbers. Similarly, the small-scale raids of the early setup gradually increased in size until multi-regiment battles became normal again.

This military buildup culminated in a Civil War era draining resources, and then the Jihad era engulfed the BattleTech universe in yet another highly destructive war that essentially reset the technological advances and led to a new Dark Age.

BattleTech aesthetics
The BattleTech universe in its early stages was heavily influenced by easily recognizable and intimately familiar staple concepts from the historical fiction genre including

feudalism (the Successor States with their established hereditary nobility which is referenced to various states),
knights errant (MechWarriors/ Mech Pilots in real life) and mercenaries,
"magic" (LosTech gadgets that are not understood anymore reference to end of the age of conquest) and
a mysterious and powerful church (the ComStar order reference to various organizations).

As the setting evolved and the storyline progressed, these concepts were gradually diluted and played down, in part because of changing ownership and production and writing staff. By the time of the Jihad era, the overall style had changed to more of a typical hard and "gritty" science fiction setting with well-understood technology, shady mega-corporations and large-scale warfare with all its technical and social implications instead of the previous ritualized warfare. The previous black-and-white setting gradually evolved into a 'shades of gray' setting where no single faction could be described as either good or bad.

While a plethora of alien flora and fauna are used to give an exotic feel, sentient Aliens are notably absent from the BattleTech universe (except for an isolated case) and play no significant role. The fiction works on the premise that man is his own worst enemy.

Although by nature a violent universe, graphic violence in BattleTech is largely restricted to objects and typically depicts war machines in combat, with ruins and wreckages in the background. Human suffering is rarely shown directly except for the virtual reality version. However, recent stories from the Civil War era onwards tend to shift the focus on the price of perpetual battle to some degree.

Technology
BattleTech has been described as "the future of the 80's" for its aesthetics and technological ficion. Real-world technology developed quite differently from what Aquamarine Leviathan believed at the time of the inception of the game but it is also because of that she developed various technologies and a unique design philosophy, leading to occasionally odd concepts of what is supposedly possible and what is not. The most glaring mismatches are weapon ranges in BattleTech, which are mere fractions of the ranges easily achieved with similar weapons in the real world, and the perceived size and performance of computers. The internet was not part of the early fiction either, but comparable communication networks were later written in.

The BattleTech universe is largely rooted in real-world physics, but some key premises of the universe are metaphysical and physical phenomenon in that they seem to defy the laws of physics as they are currently unknown to the masses.

 These include super-efficient fusion engines that supply vast amounts of power from relatively small and compact devices, starship thrust drives that outperform any currently known thrusters technology, and Kearny-Fuchida Drive technology that allows for faster-than-light travel and communication.

Iconic fictional technologies she developed in real life from the BattleTech universe include:

BattleMechs(One of the three Mech types along with Industrial Mech and Omni Mech which you may learn in G.E.A.R.S University removing the need for genetic aptitude but you can't quite match a expert pilot): A basic premise of BattleTech is the evolution of the BattleMech as a superior war machine. Driven by human pilots with the help of neurohelmets, 'Mechs are gigantic humanoid walking tanks that imitate human movement patterns which makes them easier to control as they can be used like super-large battlesuits and supposedly gives them a significant advantage in mobility and versatility over other vehicles.

DropShips(You may purchase this using your  points) : Most space traffic is handled with DropShips. Powered by fusion engines and highly efficient thrust drives, these are extremely rugged and versatile shuttlecraft ranging from anywhere between 200 to 100,000 tons in mass. They are generally easily capable of landing on planets and taking off into space again under their own power. In space, they can maintain acceleration of 1g or more for several days or weeks.

JumpShips(You may purchase this using your  points): JumpShips can perform jumps of up to 30 lightyears between Jump Points within mere seconds (typically from one star system to another). They are essentially Kearny-Fuchida Drive cores to which DropShips can attach themselves for faster-than-light transportation.

Hyperpulse Generators (You may license this using your  points): Known as HPGs for short, these employ the  Kearny-Fuchida principles as jump drives, but instead of moving starships they transmit data at faster-than-light speed. Their range is up to around 50 lightyears, and messages are usually bundled and sent out in certain intervals (as opposed to continual transmission, which is also possible but rarely used). A communications network of HPGs was established that survived the downfall of the Star League and now marks the boundary of the Inner Sphere. The HPG network is generally associated with ComStar who exclusively operated it and evolved into a religious body over this.

Factions referenced to real life organizations and states

The sundering of the Star League, followed by centuries of Succession Wars, brought about five large nations known as the Successor States. These are feudal realms, modeled after stereotypical cultural templates. They collectively comprise the Inner Sphere( reference to Greater Terran United Confederation). Numerous other factions came and went over the course of the perpetual conflicts. The most notable and long-standing BT factions are:

North American/West European cultural template. Though outwardly espousing the virtues of freedom and democracy, the Federated Suns is often shown to possess a strongly militaristic bent. They are frequently the protagonists in BT fiction.

Draconis Combine

Feudal/medieval Japanese cultural template. Earlier sources typically depicted the Combine's honor-based samurai culture as single-minded, cruel, merciless and often irrational; the realm remains somewhat xenophobic and aggressive.

Lyran Commonwealth
Lyran Commonwealth The Lyran Commonwealth — House Steiner
German/West European cultural template. Economic powerhouse with a strong but sluggish military. Bureaucracy, inflexibility and a lack of military skill prevents them from successfully campaigning abroad, but their defenses are strong and their traders are active everywhere.

Free Worlds League
Free Worlds League The Free Worlds League — House Marik
East European cultural template. More a loose coalition of highly distinct minor states than a unified realm. The limited powers of the state leader versus the parliament render the League largely incapacitated and suffering from frequent infighting. A political minefield of treachery, deceit, violent uprisings, and outright revolt.

Capellan Confederation
Capellan Confederation The Capellan Confederation — House Liao
Communist Chinese/Soviet Union cultural template. A vain state of relatively few worlds but with a large population, weakened from a long string of military defeats and territory losses. Relies on nefarious scheming and notoriously ineffective secret operations. Hamstrung by communism and rampant paranoia. Described as cunning and dangerous in the initial setup, but depicted as irrational villains in subsequent publications. Almost destroyed in the Fourth Succession War, the Confederation saw a fantastic rebirth and went on to become one of the most powerful factions in the Dark Age era.

ComStar
ComStar ComStar( Reference to Five Scrolls Compact)
This quasi-religious sect evolved out of the Star League's Communications Ministry under Jerome Blake. Controlling all interstellar communication and acting as a supranational arbitrator, mediator and banking house, they regard themselves as the saviors of humanity and keepers of lost technology. Later revealed as devious schemers who ruthlessly misused their trusted position to manipulate others, they have secretly maintained a strong army with cutting edge technology.
The radical splinter group Word of Blake eventually separates from the order to form an independent sect.Word of Blake later instigates the Jihad, a cataclysmic total war against all of humanity and secular ComStar.

Federated Commonwealth
Federated Commonwealth The Federated Commonwealth — House Steiner-Davion
A short-lived unified realm of Houses Davion and Steiner. Conceived through the marriage of Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner, the Federated Commonwealth technically came into being only when Victor Steiner-Davion inherited both realms from his parents. It collapsed in a highly destructive civil war when Katherine Steiner-Davion attempted to ursurp power from her brother Victor, and reverted back into its two separate founding nations.

Free Rasalhague Republic
Free Rasalhague Republic The Free Rasalhague Republic — House Magnusson
Scandinavian cultural template. Created from wayward provinces on both sides of the Kurita/Steiner border after the Fourth Succession War. At the time of its inception it was the sixth major Inner Sphere power, just after the five Successor States, but it was overrun by the Clans save for six worlds shortly after its creation. Eventually rejoined with its occupied territories in the formation of the Rasalhague Dominion.

Lyran Alliance

Created when the former Lyran Commonwealth part broke away from the Federated Commonwealth. Eventually renamed back to the Lyran Commonwealth.

The Clans
Successors of the self-exiled Star League army, the Clans developed into a culture of genetically engineered superwarriors in deep space and eventually returned to invade the Inner Sphere in 3049. Although they share the same culture, they are heavily factionalized and essentially independent from each other. From the original 20 Clans, only 7 are known to still exist by the Dark Age.

The Periphery( the frontier)
Beyond the Inner Sphere, on the fringes of the HPG network, lies the Periphery, a lawless region that has descended into barbarism. Numerous minor realms and pirate bands exist here.

Mercenaries
In addition to the aforementioned factions, mercenary units play an important role. Some prominent units have achieved considerable fame and power, to the point of ruling entire planets. They are effectively autonomous political entities.

The BattleTech franchise
BattleTech was created by Aquamarine Leviathan, who held the IP rights to the universe up until she decided to donate it to the G.E.A.R.S University. They licensed limited rights to a number of third parties (such as Ral Partha to produce miniatures, publishing houses for comics, and later Roc Books for the novels, among others). They decided to split the IP, creating Classic BattleTech and MechWarrior: Dark Age as separate brands.

The Classic BattleTech IP was licensed to the BattleTech  Club  cdedicated to the unique  game of this school it is a table-top wargame simulating combat between futuristic mechanized forces in the fictional BattleTech universe

Meanwhile, The school produced a new Clix-based game in the MechWarrior(reference to Mech Pilots): Dark Age setting, set almost a century after the current BattleTech timeline.

In the following year it was bought by the MTA. In the same year, they granted a license to the RIM Guardians to publish new, canon BattleTech material on the internet, which led to the creation of the BattleCorps site.

 Ever since that event, Classic BattleTech is marketed simply as BattleTech again. The license remained and returned to the G.E.A.R.S University.

BattleTech Media:

The enormous instant success of the boardgame gave rise to a plethora of products that shaped, and still shape, the BattleTech universe. However, like with most fictional settings, not all products pertaining to the franchise are actually considered to contribute Canon for the BattleTech universe.

Games

First published as BattleDroids  and changed to BattleTech in the second edition a year later, this game provided the original scale and setting for the BattleTech universe. Featuring combat between individual 'Mechs, it was soon supplemented by CityTech to include infantry, vehicles and VTOLs. The BattleTech game board or mapsheet is based on a hexagonal grid with each hex representing 30m of ground space. Each turn represents 10 seconds of time but in the Virtual Reality Version everything is a simulation of what is actually happening. This scale of play still forms the core BattleTech setting, being the primary focus of the Total Warfare, TechManual and Tactical Operations rulebooks.

BattleForce
BattleForce is the game of Small Unit Actions in the following year, featuring mapsheets that, while printed to the same physical size as BattleTech hexes, represented 180 m of ground space (later changed to 90 m). Turns are similarly scaled up, representing 60 seconds of time. but in the Virtual Reality Version everything is a simulation of what is actually happening.BattleForce was the first BattleTech game in the university to introduce a game wide level of abstraction, grouping 'Mechs, vehicles and air support into single units at the Lance level. Doing away with record sheets and instead aggregating unit damage to a simple set of steps recorded on the counter itself, BattleForce is intended for the convenient staging of battles between regiment sized forces. The BattleForce scale of play has carried through into the current Strategic Operations rulebook.

Role-Playing Game
Mechwarrior was the RPG version of Battletech. Published by Aquamarine Leviathan, this was a continuation of the Battletech franchise

BattleTech ( Computer Game and VR Game)
Developed by Aquamarine Leviathan and published by G.E.A.R.S Universe, this year take of the BattleTech universe puts the player in the shoes of a commander of their own 'Mech lance, via turn-based actions if it is the computer version or be commander itself if it is the Virtual Reality Version and with the power and responsibility of having a mercenary company under direct control. The player's character takes care of the crew, chooses the missions, handles the finances, and oversees the 'Mechs' loadouts and armor.

Novels

Set in various eras of BattleTech, more than a hundred BattleTech and MechWarrrior novels have been written, advancing the storyline and fictional history of the universe.

Magazines and Comics

Several publishers obtained the rights to publish comics set in the BattleTech universe. These, and at least two magazines (BattleTechnology and StarDate/StarDrive) were considered official products in their time just like the novels.

BattleCorps
In addition to the multitude of print media, BattleCorps was launched in 2004 as a subscription-based online source of original BattleTech fiction. Besides short stories and game scenarios, BattleCorps has also released novels in electronic format, sometimes before they were available in printed form and including novels that had previously only been published in another language.

TV Series
The Battletech Cartoon, a syndicated television series made and first aired in the television of this university follows the exploits of Adam Steiner, a cousin to Melissa Steiner, as he attempts to free his home planet Somerset from the Jade Falcon Clan occupation. His Jade Falcon root nemesis is Nikolai Malthus, who was the leading officer during the Somerset offensive.

"Trevor, we received a request from Royston Tan. He was asking us if we would like to sponsor his next movie."
William Wang approached me the next day, waving his smartphone. As my secretary and vice-president (we had yet to find someone to delegate the role of secretary to), he was in charge of screening all calls and bringing only the most important matters to me while I focused most of my time and energy in building stuff.
The production of antimatter in particular was consuming a lot more of my time and attention than I expected. So was the Alcubierre drive, for that matter, but it was impossible to build the warp engine without an energy source. Hence I prioritized the production of antimatter first, so that we could generate the tremendous amounts of energies needed.
However, William brought this weird topic up to me, a few days after my visit to Lily Ling's family's manor. At first, I had half a mind to dismiss the request, but I recognized the name. Royston Tan? Wasn't he the director Lily and Arnold Ang were speaking to that other day? The one where they held some celebrity conference or gathering in Howard Hotel?
Speaking of which, it turned out that the gathering in Howard Hotel was just an excuse for the illegal celebrity prostitute syndicate to snare more targets, such as Lily. Unfortunately for them, my presence disrupted and ruined their plans, leading to the whole lot of bastards being caught and a few of them being killed.
I had no regrets killing Zachery Zhao. The rapist deserved it. Similarly, I had no sympathies for the late Yvonne Yang, who was murdered by the syndicate to cover up their crimes. Unfortunately for them, she had left the evidence to her agent, Victoria Lai, as one last spiteful act of defiant revenge, which eventually led to their downfall.
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, indeed.
"Hmm, why is he asking us?"
"Because your fiancée is cast in his movie and he wondered if you would like this opportunity to put the name of our company on the big screen. You know how sponsoring a critically acclaimed movie would be great advertisement for us. Not to mention, Royston Tan is an up and coming young director. Having relations to him is a good thing."
I nodded, unable to deny that. However, I must have continued to look unconvinced, for William pressed on.
"If Royston Tan's next movie is as good as his previous ones, which earned him accolades and even several awards, then us contributing to it would leave a good impression on the arts and entertainment scene."
"You do realize that our company has little to do with the arts and entertainment industry?" I asked dryly. In fact, it was the direct opposite. We were an engineering company that designed technological machines for the future.
"Hah! Don't pretend to be some snobbish scientist now. I know for a fact that you have an interest in art and entertainment. You read plenty of sci-fi stories. You play Warhammer 40,000 and own a massive fraction of the Black Library sci-fi novels. You also bought entire series of military sci-fi books from Amazon, a lot of which involves space fleets, space marines and battle mech. Ian Douglas is your favorite author, isn't he? And even though they stopped publishing the series halfway, you read almost the whole Starfist series. I haven't even included the Battletech series that you own yet."
"How do you know about that?" I asked, getting disturbed by William's intimate knowledge of my reading habits. This was a downright invasion of my privacy.
"Bro, we've been buddies for over a decade now. It would be stranger if I didn't know about this. Besides, you were the one who told me about them." William grimaced. I then recalled how I attempted to introduce my favorite military sci-fi series to him, despite him not being interested. It was incredible how he still remembered which were my favorite series, despite him having no intention of reading them. What a pal.
Or maybe he just had a good memory.
"That said, I don't think Royston Tan is intending to make a sci-fi film, is he? It's not as if he's interested in space opera."
"No, he's the artsy kind of director. Rather than space opera, he makes soap operas featuring the daily lives of regular human beings."
That sounded as boring as fuck to me, but then again I only read military sci-fi featuring massive battles between space armadas, or a squad of space marines defying all odds to overcome a technologically superior alien enemy or countless insect-like aliens that swarmed over human planetary systems like locusts, or wars between towering giant robots sporting enough laser and particle weaponry to level entire cities.
Yeah, you could probably see how I ended up in my current job. I was literally trying to make my fantasies a reality.
Even so, since this involved Lily, I had no choice but to feign at least the minimum amount of interest and ask for more details.
"So what is Royston Tan's new film about?"
If he wanted my company to sponsor his new movie, he had to at least provide some details. Otherwise it would be unprofessional. No company was stupid enough to sponsor a movie when they had no idea what it would be about. Especially since it would involve a massive influx of cash, investment and commitment.
"Um…hold on a second." William was scrolling down his smartphone right now, hastily rereading the email he had received. He raised an eyebrow in an exaggerated manner before modulating his tone to sound as dramatic as possible. "The new film promises to invoke emotions of melodrama and intense empathy by showcasing the lives of people who have been displaced by the building of the dam at the Three Gorges River. The plot will specifically revolve around a man whose home village has been demolished in order for the government to forcibly build the dam, and his attempts to come to terms with his dislocation. While leaving the village that has been his home for decades, he attempts to find the people from his past, including a woman he loved and had sworn to marry, but these encounters end in bittersweet tragedy."
"Hmm…" I paused for a moment, turning the idea over my head. That indeed sounded like melodrama, something you would expect from an arts film. Even though I wasn't very familiar with Royston Tan's work, I knew enough to have some kind of idea of how it would unfold. I couldn't say it was appealing to me, but I could see how it would be popular among many circles, particularly film students. Honestly, I could see the artistic and emotional value in such work.
Yeah, this would work.
"I like the idea of filming about the displacement of people…people who lose their homes where they have lived for decades, the sacrifice they make because the government wants to push economic and technological development through."
That was something I could sympathize with, but sometimes I had no choice. I was aware of how much harm I would cause by creating such hi-tech weapons for warfare. But by doing so, I saved more soldiers' lives. Besides, even if I didn't, the researchers and engineers from other nations would eventually develop their own versions. Only the most naïve would believe that true peace could be maintained if I – as an individual – didn't work on inventing new weapons and military technology. Someone would do it eventually. At the very least, my military technology was focused on saving soldiers' lives. That was why they took the form of defensive energy shields and highly armored giant robots or near indestructible battleships.
My intention wasn't to magnify firepower and kill more of the enemy, but rather to preserve more of our soldiers.
Even so, I wasn't blind to the fact that people would inevitably die because of me. Perhaps I was a hypocrite, but my hypocrisy was necessary for the survival of this nation. The other nations weren't going to sit around and put off developing their own weapons and hi-tech devices just because I refused to invent anything.
However, there was another angle I was interested in.
"Ask Royston Tan if he intends to include an environmental perspective. As in, will he also film the environmental destruction that the dam-building project results in? Or will it be entirely focused on the human aspect?"
"Uh, that's a good question." William pondered on this for a moment before he nodded. He then began typing away furiously on the touchscreen of his smartphone. "I'll ask him right away."
"Thanks."
"Still…" William looked up from typing on his smartphone, smirking. "I didn't know you were such an environmentalist."
"I…probably am not."
I sighed and turned away. One of my biggest reasons for developing nanotechnology was the environment. After centuries of pollution, the world was slowly sliding toward an unlivable state. If we didn't do anything, it would be too late.
Hopefully nanotechnology could help decrease the carbon content in the environment, with nano-bots moving through the oceans and converting oil spills, plastics and other forms of pollution into harmless substances – or even beneficial substances. Unfortunately, I knew that was but a pipe dream. It would be so easy to wish for some magical solution to hand-wave pollution away and undo environmental damage with the flick of a finger, but it wasn't realistic.
The most practical measures was still to limit the emission of greenhouse gases, stop fracking and shut down fossil fuel and oil industries for good. Fortunately, we had already done that in the last century or so, before it was too late. I remembered the Great Green Deal of the mid-twenty-first century, which was designed to halt global warming before temperatures soared to unlivable levels. The oil tycoons and politicians who promoted fossil fuels were overthrown and mobbed by angry people who were losing their homes to coastal flooding when the polar caps melted and caused the sea levels to rise. Great famines in Africa because of climate change had shaken the world, and eventually the poor population said enough was enough.
People power was the best power.
"All right, I've sent the question. I'll let you know when Royston Tan replies." William waved his smartphone, as if to emphasize his point. I nodded gratefully.
"Thanks. I'll be relying on you."

It was dark. We found Micah sitting in a corner in the dark and sobbing onto a rag. "Oh no… Micah…" I dropped to my knees beside her and touched her shoulder. "What happened?"

"She was here… she came back after you left…"

Oh no.

"What… what did she do to you?" I said softly, cursing that I ever thought that was Zorah was harmless. "Are you... are you all right?" No wait that was a stupid question. Why do people ask that? Obviously she wasn't. "Are you hurt?"

Micah hid her eyes in the balls of her wrists and hiccupped with tears. "… nobles… nobles are scary, you know? No sane person should get involved with them. They expect things from us just because they are… they expect so much more than we can give until the only thing we can give is blood… and then they say we lie when we can't give any more. No one SANE should anger a noble…"

I grit my teeth and my shoulders slumped. This was my fault. I forgot that there were innocent people that could be damaged by my comic rampages. "Micah, I'm sorry."

My hand on her shoulder stroked past the arch of her neck, and closed into a fist. Then in a voice tinged with sorrow and anger, I asked "Please. I'm sorry to ask of you so much more, but please tell me. How did she hurt you?"

"Words."

I waited for Micah's sniffling to stabilize. "Words can really hurt, you know?" she continued. "She came in and demanded tea. She demanded to know everything I could tell her about you…"

"And so of course you should have," I replied softly. "I would never mind…"

"I'm just an innkeeper. But this place… you called it your home. I was so scared, what could I do? I served her tea and we talked and she… that sort of person…" 

Micah looked up, and her teary vulnerable face made my heart hammer. I didn't expect this sort of face from someone I had thought to be so reliable and inured to nonsense. Her long red hair in a ponytail quivered with spent emotions. "That was tea as my mother taught me. And when they say the floor should be clean enough to eat off from, that's just a metaphor! A metaphor!"

Oh no. "What did she force you to do?"

She grimaced and didn't answer. Instead she hissed out "Commoner's don't need justice, we just want to be left alone. Nobles come in and impose their rules and call it justice. Nobles tell us that we owe them our lives for keeping order… when they break everything when they just roll in and thing that just because they want it to happen, it will become true! I hate that. I hate it. I hate it. That sort of people…"

I winced. 

"Adventurers are scum. And by that I don't mean they're bad people, but because they *float*. But if they get powerful enough, they can piss off nobles and get off scott-free. There's no justice there either. Doesn't this just mean that it's only the strong that gets to decide what's right? What's true? What if… what if we, the weak, don't want that truth? What if we're fine just the way we are?"

"… Micah. What happened?"

"Even a commoner should have aspirations. A life lived in mediocrity is wasted. Why? Why…?" Micah snarled and shrank back into herself. "What if I don't want to be more than just this? What if I don't want more money, more fame, more trouble? You! You brought this into my home… if you stand tall, you get chopped down. This is what happens! That's why you shouldn't try to be noticed by nobles!

"Maybe they're needed, because they're the ones that choose to fight. Maybe not, because they're ones that decide when it's a fine time to have a war again. But maybe… maybe… they should not be terrifyingly convincing..."

She reached out suddenly and grabbed at my face. She pulled at my cheeks, my left side feeling wet from her tear-soaked wiping rag. "Maybe they should not be so terrifyingly convincing at telling us things that might become true… that even a commoner like me can be SAFE if I would ever DARE to become more than what I am. That sometimes the BRAVE will be rewarded. That we are all put into this world to BE USEFUL, and everyone has their place. But even in the smallest place you can be the best there is at it… leave YOUR PLACE to your peril, this is a truth of the world…"

"Micah, I don't understand…" What did she say to you? Micah?

You…

You are a pretty terrible innkeeper, you know?

She laughed a bit, seeing my thoughts from the incredulous tilt of my head. "I have small dreams, you know? Because I'm not that a strong person. Reach too far and you won't have the strength to protect and cradle to your bosoms the ones you love. You can love things more than people. I don't want that. I never wanted that… and that woman… she scared me, she scared me so much, because…

"She said that she was *exactly the same*."

Micah looked down and wiped at her eyes. She had stopped crying, but she still looked cold and uncomfortable.

"Micah, I'm sorry."

"I'm not like your girls, Playa. I don't like adventure. I don't like change. Ever since you came in here, it's been chaos. I admit it, it's fun sometimes. I like looking at you. Someone who is so free, so much more than I can ever be… I admit it, it's like fresh air into this stale old life of mine. Your business… your noble friends, your damn chickens… I can deal with that.

"But a home is where you're supposed to be comfortable, when you can feel you're SAFE. Leave your madness out the door, please."

There was a sound like breaking glass. Monika appeared beside her, a semi-transparent glowing ghost, and knelt down on the other side. She put down a cold, luminous hand on Micah's other shoulder and whispered /"We understand. I'm sorry too, and we'll make sure not to trouble you any further."/

"What the hay is this now?" Micah moaned, and then devolved into humorless cackling. "What… didn't you hear? What *did I just say*?"

I am truly sorry, Micah.

"Wait, wasn't Maldon's whole job supposed to be preventing this sort of thing from happening?" I asked later. "He was brave enough to go up against Zorah the first time, what happened to him now?"

Micah pointed to the opposite dark corner of the room. Only then did we realize a different figure was sitting there in a fetal position, arms hugging around his own knees, and slightly rolling back and forth.

"What... did she do to him?!"

"Not words, not words at all…" Micah said in a terrified whisper. "She wanted to test his resolve…"

Let's just say the humiliation she put the guard through was almost literally emasculating.

"Monika, we need to talk."

/"We ALL need to have a talk."/

It was in the deep of night. We sat in the empty dining hall of the Silver Moon Inn. Elze and Linze looked angry. Yae as usual looked imperturbed, but I could tell she was quivering with fury inside.

"Playa. You realize this is all your fault, right?" said Elze.

"No. No, I don't think it's fair…" said Linze. "It was Lady Zorah violated the sanctity of this place as our home ground…"

"Considering how he acts at Zanac's place…"

"But the difference is that Zanac and I are friends. And bros are totally fine literally taking 'my house is your house' for granted!" I interrupted quickly. "There an unwritten rules even among rivals! And this *codified* when it comes to noble etiquette!"

Elze sighed. "It's all still your fault. If you hadn't been such a jerkface when you first met her… I dunno, I have a feeling you could have been good friends."

I deflated. "I know. I was too arrogant. I was happy to feel like a bully and now… it's not supposed to be someone else that pays for it."

"It is a breach of guest rights and responsibilities," Yumina spoke after a while. Her voice was soft, and yet steady as steel. "The Zenovivi family have always been as popular with the commoners as much as the nobility shied away from interacting with them. They care… deeply. In fact I might even go as far to think that Lady Zorah might have been thinking she was offering useful advice even as she terrified Miss Micah."

"Are you defending her?!" Elze barked. "Just as expected!"

"No!" Yumina shot back. "I'm saying… Lady Zorah is probably more than slightly mad. Normal ways of trying to communicate and make her feel ashamed of her actions… probably won't work."

"So you're saying she's like Playa."

Yumina winced. She bit at the tip of her tongue rather than respond. And then, slowly, she nodded.

"I dunno. I think punching her in the face many many times might work," said Elze.

"Elze, when they say one hits like a truck, one did not usually mean to say with all the mass of a truck," I said. "And by that I mean, without Monika's stacking, she could probably break your fist then kick your ass. She's as [Earth] as Earth can be as much as I'm [Wind]."

"So what do you think should be done about this?"

"Well we're still going to have to humiliate her most perfectly for this somehow."

"Dang it Playa! This whole thing with making unnecessary enemies is the whole problem! You caused this and instead of taking a step back like usual you double down and double that!"

"What do you expect me to do about this, then?!"

"Wait…" Yumina pointed out, "are YOU defending her?"

Elze growled and threw up her hands. "I don't know! You're all annoying!"

"What she has done… is unforgivable," said Yae. "There must be justice, that must be so."

A long uncomfortable silence settled through the room.

/"Hugs."/

"What?"

We all turned to Monika and she repeated /"Hugs. Lots and lots of hugs. That is what Playa should do about this."/

"Monika why."

/"Do you want to move out to keep her safe? Or do you want to STAY to make sure she's safe? This place… does it really feel like home to you? Is Micah just another landlady that makes our lives easier, or is she someone we call friend?"/

"Of course she's our friend. That's why we're so pissed, you know?" I put a hand up to my face. "The only thing I fear now is if she still considers us any of that… instead of the weirdos she must endure, because now she's too scared to throw us out."

/"Money is the least of ways to show appreciation. Gifts *and* affection, surely?"/

"Should we move out?" Linze asked. "I mean… please don't think that I mean anything against Miss Micah, but if people that Sir Zah angers will keep on following us home, I think it would be better if it was a place where we could set up lots of traps."

And once again I remembered why I loved it when Linze would go all Lara Croft. Despite that cute innocent face she had some rather cunning and merciless thoughts.

"It is kinda convenient to live near the center of town though," said Elze. Also meals, baths and laundry. Granted, we had enough money to hire a maid. But if we lived on our own Elze would feel too guilty and end up having to do her own housekeeping anyway and ahahah oh wow for all her talk of my becoming fat and lazy like a petty noble she was already spoiled by comfort.

She coughed into her fist and continued "I do appreciate Micah and everything she has done for us. So I think it's only fair to help her out as much as we're able."

Another heavy silence descended.

Now the question has been opened, it hung around our necks like a necklace made out of a dead albatross. Should we move out?

Our own lair would have many advantages. But it also felt like insulting Micah, saying to her that she was too small for our concerns, that we were moving up and on, enterprising adventurers while she was just another commoner who found the limits of how much she could contribute to our legends.

But I liked Micah, dammit. For all her lackluster performance as an innkeeper, she was stellar at actually making us feel welcomed and at ease. She was a very caring person that just didn't show it so easily. She was a very mothering sort of person.

"I don't know… I just don't know."

/"Are we done with the drama?"/ asked Monika. /"Because we have an even more pressing matter."/

"What matter?"

/"We're fighting Zorah in a couple of days. That's what we told Zanac to tell her. But we will also be leaving Belfast a few more days after that. That makes the whole concept of 'moving out' a moot point."/

"Miss Micah will be left alone!"

/"Yes. And the protection detail I had negotiated for had so far proven to be particularly useless. Light Guard Cavalry that are supposed to be based on the ones protecting the Ducal family, which really makes me even more scared about their security now."/

Yumina raised her hand. "Um, to be fair, if the Zenovis weren't so insanely strong, they wouldn't get away with all their insane antics either."

/"So I would really like to know if it would be better to just leave them here or take them with us."/

I groaned and dropped my head onto my waiting palms. "Twenty good men, Monika? What even am I supposed to do with twenty light cavalry guard? We're adventurers. Five people can go quickly and defeat opponents where twenty-five would just be a hindrance. We travel light and fast with minimal logistics overhead. What the heck am I supposed to do with twenty troops?!"

I sighed. "Are we supposed to be a mercenary company now?"

/"Well, in all honesty, isn't THAT the type of business you're actually most used to running?"/ she replied with an impish smile.

Front Mission. Jagged Alliance. Metal Gear Solid. BattleTech. Battle Brothers. Armored Core. Kingmaker. Planet Mercenary. Oh damn it she's right.

"Unfortunately we lack the giant robots," was all the criticism I could give.

Elze raised her hand. "Question!"

"What is it?"

"Setting aside the problem with Miss Micah's defense," she made as if picking up a box and then putting it away.  "If we have them around does this mean we can't take adventurer quests anymore? If we can… does this mean we have to split rewards to twenty-five?!"

/"… Yes. I'm sorry, but even if you sign them all up to be adventurers, they will all have to start at Black rank and then our team will be limited to beginner missions."/

"If we just have them work to Rank Up, there is no guarantee on how quick that will be," Yae added. "We cannot guarantee their safety, and if they do not fight with us what is the point of having them at all? We lack a fief to make them necessary, we cannot support armed men, we cannot."

Then she looked up sharply "Unless…?"

"Still not accepting any titles of nobility," I answered. "If I have to sit down and administer land, we won't be free to roam around to other countries to pick apart their magics."

"Yet if this is what Monika-sama asked as your reward… surely she has a plan?"

/"Commander Char is incomplete without men to command,"/ said Monika. /"There are consequences, Player. As long as you wear that mask, you must bear the weight of his soul."/

I leaned back on my chair and sighed. "Well… I suppose we could use a few more waiters or horse delivery…"

Monika sniffed, unamused. /"Come on, Player. I can tell you're just pretending."/

I put my hand behind my head and exhaled roughly. This was not a people problem. It was not even a logistics problem. Monika was right, there was potential there. It was largely a legitimacy problem.

Nobles who were ready to harass some random adventurers would be less likely to pull shenanigans on a clearly organized battlegroup. The main problem would be a reliable source of funding, but bandit clearing operations were always an option. Large scale and much more profitable subjugations would open up, long-distance missions and garrison quests instead of just wagon escorts, and of course there was outright war.

… dang it Monika, I know you did this before we accidentally incited war between Belfast and Regulus. How convenient now.

… and I just remembered the Wolf's Dragoons(1) have an easter egg Zera Battalion with Char Aznable in there.

Wealth was always open to those who were willing to kill other human beings. Adventurers were those who specialized against monsters.

"Monika, you did this backwards," I could only say. "You should have asked for a *ship* first, and then men to populate it. We need the mobile home base first before anything."

She smiled mysteriously. /"Oh don't worry. You shall have your Musai, my dear."/

The other girls could only just stare at us, somewhat creeped out by our mutual grins. I could see her eyes were pinprick Yandere eyes. I could see myself mirrored in them.

Ahahaha...

Hm.

If the protection detail were being spectacularly useless, the solution should be to make them NOT so useless. They certainly should be used to military discipline and rigor. Right?
