But there’s one thing people don’t know and can’t know about Yul.

Just letting you know now, the idea came from watching AKB48’s Mendol Ikemen, but the story will not be like the J-Drama. I hope you like it. Pleeeeeeease enjoy

The Shadow is what this story is about and this is a short story covering a serious topic.

I Let Out A Tired Sigh. I quickly remove all of my clothes, down the remaining coffee in the mug and jump into the shower. I wash the frustration out of my hair and calm my body for a while. Once I'm sure all the warm water is done for, I dry myself and put on some fresh and crispy pair of pyjamas and comfortable baggy t-shirt and jump onto the couch. I open my silver laptop and as if all the weight is back again.

I've been trying to prepare the cover for my new chapbook, "Sea Full Of Stars" for the past three days now. I'm not a visual artist and hiring one costs too much and I'm too broke to spend bills on softwares. It's never easy being a writer. Writing itself can be such a lonely process, although it is my first home. But then I have to design a cover that is not only catchy, mysterious and unique but also conversely uninhibited. Great. I spend hours trying to find the right website that'll let me make one for free.

For a minute there, I sit back tired and almost defeated. What if books didn't have covers, I think to myself. I could've saved all this hassle and been sleeping on my lonely bed in peace. I'd be "Netflix and Chilling" on my phone. I'd probably have been writing something new.

But what about all the books I've read? I confess that I've also once trusted the image more than the not-so-convincing texts. The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald with it's original art work is a stunning masterpiece. The eyes, the blue and the glam packed in it's dressing is an unbelievable turn on for any reader. But then again it wasn't designed by Fitzgerald himself. It was illustrated by Francis Cugat, a little known artist back then. It was the Gatsby that made me realise that it is an art to cover the book with a cape.

The same cannot be said for all the other books in my collection. Interpreter Of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri or Pablo Neruda's Love don't have the most convincing covers. I bought those books for the rave reviews I'd heard of them.

I do know that Rupi Kaur illustrated her own books. I get up and bring out all the poetry books that I own and try to fathom the making of their book art. The simplicity in Rupi's artwork is really appealing, but on the other hand Atticus's books look way too fancy. But the one thing they had in common is that their book covers were exactly what their book title said.

I too want my cover to reflect the idea and spirit of my book. But I don't know anyone who can design a book cover. Or who understands or reads my book or my art. I don't have my Francis Cugat.

I turn back to my computer, reducing it's brightness first because outside it's turning dark and I don't want to turn the light on just yet. I make a mental conversation with myself that if it doesn't work this time, I'll just use a template by Kindle Direct Publishing.

This time I go to YouTube and type 'how to make a paperback book cover for free' and hit Enter. The first video is of a middle-aged white man on the thumbnail, his hair slightly brown and a straight face. I click on it. The video starts demonstrating the process of making an easy to go book cover on this website called Canva.

I've used this app on my phone before but I never knew it could be used for making a paperback dress. I go to the site and follow all the instructions. I choose the image very mindfully, edit it, use the right fonts and change the colors. I do the same with the back cover and add a piece of poetry there. Then I keep following the instructions and after failing countless times, I make the perfect book cover for my latest collection.

I wipe the tears of joy slipping down my cheeks. I know I haven't made the best or make-you-pick-the-book-up kind of cover, but I'm happy.

I realise that I'm more happy because I could finally do something that fits the rules of the modern mass publishing world. I did something that will make people want to give me a look.

If it was upto me, I'd have the cover completely black or yellow and only bare my name and the name of the book. But that's not the case. I just smile with the fact that I made something that reflects the imagery or mood of my book. And I know that even with the exhausting role my cover will play, it won't ever gain the respect it deserves.

I go to bed hungry and drift off.

this is all your fault. why didn't you  place the bathrobes back in their position. Roline had learnt a lot on putting all the blame on this poor husband of hers.
 why didn't you just step back in the bathroom?, you were one step away from the door and here you're putting everything on me. An said helplessly.
looking behind, Roline saw that what An said was true but still didn't give up.
An, can't you stop all that? am your wife, you should save me some face. right?
 yes my dear wife, it was my fault that you came out of the bathroom naked and instead of you going back in to the bathroom, it was me who made you stand still. it was me who made you cover your chest, bending down and standing up straight again. right? An said everything looking at Roline. she was left with no words to refute back but still she asked.
why did you pretend to look away?

I had to save you some face. after which, An moved out of the room leaving behind more nine  words.
 "dry your hair or you will catch a cold.
Roline was left standing in the room. she had no words to change what had just happened. she was used to teasing An whenever the opportunity presented itself, but today An took everything seriously.

am sorry but I had to cut your wings short. I just want you to learn how to deal with your mistakes and not pushing them to others. I can handle it when you push them to me but, I can't tell what others will think of you just in case you do the same to others. An thought after closing the door behind him. he didn't leave the door.
minutes later, An heard no movements in the room. he pushed the door only to find Roline in same spot where he left her standing.
 why aren't drying your hair?
Roline didn't answer. seeing that she wasn't listening, An pulled her over to the chair in front of her  mirror. he brought the hand bow dryer and dried her hair.
he tied the hair in a messy ban.
 here, change into your night dress and go to sleep. An said while giving her a night dress.
Roline looked more like a doll. she didn't move, talk or do anything.
An pulled her out of the chair, put the dress on her head and pulled it downwards. got her hands out through the hand openings, passed his hands on her collarbone to loosen the towel. the towel slipped down to the floor.
An picked it up and tossed it into the laundry basket.
he dragged Roline from the mirror table to the bedside.
 "lay down for now, it's late. An said before he went to his side of the bed.
Roline didn't move. she remained standing at the bed side.
An ended up moving out of bed back to Roline. he pushed her to sit on the bed before sitting beside her.
  "Roline, am sorry. am sorry for ruining your day. I didn't mean to put you in this state. I will move out if you don't want to see me but lay down and get some rest. okay?An  said before he stood up to grab another cover from the cover box.
reaching the door way, Roline spoke.
 "get back here An, if you dried my hair, dressed me up, pulled me here, then why not carrying me to bed, cover me and close my eyes than leaving me here to sleep alone.huh? she sounded serious in her words.

 so, you want me to carry you. right?An asked in an amused manner.

An looked at Roline who was answering questions like a celebrity on a talk show. he bend down to carry her in his arms, layed her down, covered her and he also closed her eyes using his palm.
   "Goodnight princess Roline, may God bless me with the way you think.

Coach Wilcox looked more calm with Jason near third. Next, he turned to me. He slowly made his way over, making me nervous. What if I got cut right now? Noah would flip out. "What have you gone over exactly?"

"He's taken notes on the basics." Zeke replied for me. "Saturday we went over the most common plays."

"Obviously not." Coach refuted. "Hard grounders down the third baseline is second after grounders to the shortstop." He looked at me. "You would cover the base of it was a grounder to Noah, right?" I nodded. "Then why wouldn't you do the same when the ball goes to third?" I lifted a finger to point at Noah. He was more athletic and knew what to do so shouldn't he cover..?

Coach chuckled at my weak response. "You think Noah should do it since he's a better player?" I nodded, exactly. "Okay. Think about it like this. If it's a grounder to the first baseman, where would you go?"

I pointed at first base. I should cover. We went over this Saturday. Someone should be on the base. 

"Right. Now, why wouldn't Noah do the same, and cover for his side? We can't leave third open, because there's a chance for error."

I nodded, starting to understand. That makes sense. I should have thought about it more. 

"Let me give you a cheat." Coach Wilcox called in Noah, Jason, and Julian. "How many players do we have on the infield?" I raised four fingers. "And how many bases?" I raised three fingers. "So if there's an infield hit, you have one player going to the ball and everyone else should grab a base. Understand?" I nodded. "Just remember B. The letter B rhymes with three. Want to know what else starts with the letter B?" He grinned. "The three roles of an infielder: ball, base, backup. Your job on every ball in play, is to pick one of these three options. You either go to the ball. Go to the base to cover. Or backup a play."

Enlightenment dawn on me. 

"Wow Coach. Who knew you can make baseball this simple." Noah smiled, trying to hold back a laugh. 

Coach didn't hold back his laugh. "This is as simple as can be. This is what I use to teach little leaguers." My face twitched at the thought of being compared to little kids. Coach noticed. "It's nothing to be ashamed of. You just lack practice."

Noah gave me a thumbs up. "Three B's. Apparently that's all you needed to know. Everything that Zeke taught you is just extra details." Jason and Julian let out little laughs. 

"That's not true." Coach Wilcox came to defend his captain. "Zeke probably gave you more in-depth information that you should continue to study. Baseball doesn't always go according to plan. The three B's are just the guidelines." He clapped his hands twice and turned away. "Back to your positions!" He headed back to his spot next to Mr. Miller. 

Julian and Jason were quick to walk back to their spots, and Zeke had already ran back to center field. Only Noah stuck around for a second. "Don't mind Chris. A few of the upperclassmen are just mad that you have a better bat. Just focus on playing. Not even playing well. Just having fun while playing baseball." He pulled my cap over my eyes before taking off. 

I fixed my hat so I could see properly. I wasn't completely naive. Some of the guys were bound to be upset with a total newbie on a varsity team. Zeke even said so before, that they shouldn't have to accommodate me. I need to carry my own weight. 

I focused on the guy calling the plays and hitting the ball. We started to run a few more plays, and with coach's cheat, I felt more comfortable making decisions. The infield plays became easier and easier. 

As we started to work on hits to the outfield, I really started to understand the point of knowing ball, base, backup. If it was hit to the left field, Noah would go to the ball to be the cutoff and I would cover second. If it went to right field, Julian would go to the ball to be the cutoff man, and I would go cover first base. In regards to center field hits, Zeke threw bullets to Noah and I made sure to cover second. Since I didn't have a strong arm to throw home, it wouldn't make sense for me to go to any ball in the outfield. Noah though, had a crazy arm to go with his outstanding reflexes. I really wasn't surprised that he would start at shortstop with those skills.

After a near death experience thanks to his own mother, Jake Hollander has an adverse reaction to people, baseball, and family. He went to his assigned class. Finding the training ground, he went there with his PUD. Having a white shirt and camo pants, he walks inside the room of the firing range. From the outside, it was a small building. But he was expecting it to be big. He went inside and saw others like him. Also having the same uniform he has. Looking at them, he also saw that he was the smallest. He also saw that they have a robust physique. 
     "Gad damn! They were ripped!", Marlin shouted in his mind.
       "Do I need to be as robust as them? Hmm, but it doesn't feel the need to do so! I gotta exercise more!", Marlin said to himself.
       The instructor went inside with a cowboy hat and a brown uniform. He was like a sheriff in Marlin's eyes. Thinking about it, he was amazed by his broad shoulders and bigger upper body. His lower body was fit and compacted. He has Johny bravo vibes in him.
       "Now boys! You are all here to train! Grab that machine gun and let's not waste time.", He said to them.
       They saw the machine gun facing the targets on the firing range and picked their own. Standing on the floor while putting the stand of the machine gun on the sandbag. They were ready to fire anytime and they waited for the go signal of the instructor.
      "Point the scope to the targets on the field. You need to remove first the empty shell on the barrel.", He said to them while walking back and forth.
       Marlon followed his instruction although he knows it already. 
        "Aim to the scope then fire!", he shouted.
       Everybody knows what to do already and they pulled the trigger.
      Chagachagachag!
      The empty shells were thrown outside of the exhaust of the machine gun. Marlin saw the targets were stationary and were not moving so he fired it to the head. The machine gun has lesser accuracy and has high vertical recoil due to its firing rate. But when controlled, it will be a powerhouse against mob types of zombies. Marlin knew it and so he picked the guardian type of class because he wanted to protect his teammates. Despite knowing it has the heaviest equipment, he was only thinking of it as training while on the field. 
      Chagachagachag!
     They fired an entire magazine and others were freaking out. They haven't fired a hun before but they have now. It was a bliss of joy that they felt and they were addicted to it. 
      "Woohoo!!!", shouted the guy who has a shaved head.
       "Hey calm down your horses! We were still in the beginning. Now practice reloading! Put that magazine on the gun! Reload! Reload!", he shouted at them.
       They were now reloading frantically. Marlin calmly reloaded it and then readies to fire another round of shots. The instructor was amazed by it but he didn't show his feelings. He was just silently observing. They finished reloading and was looking at their instructor.
      "Good! Now you carry that gun outside and jog in the meantime. After that, we practice again firing in the firing range. Now move!", he shouted.
       They went outside and carried their guns. The instructor leads the jogging and they followed him. 
       "Hoppity hoppity hop! You need to have the stamina to last long in the battle as well as the strength to carry your gun! Move move move!", He shouted at them.
       Marlin carried his gun and it was heavy. It was bearable at first but it was getting heavier as time goes by. He ran while carrying the heavy machine gun until he felt that his arms will be ripped off by its heaviness. Feeling like he wants to surrender, he chose to grit his teeth and hold on to his determination. He persevered until it was on the finishing lap. Panting in great exhaustion, they nearly collapsed. It was their sheer fighting spirit that was keeping them up and running. 
       The instructor didn't even break a sweat. 
      "Come on! Move! Let's go back to the firing range and fire another round!", he shouted at them.
       They went back to the firing range while panting. Having jogged for one time around the field made them pant due to the heaviness of the gun. It will be a whole lot different without it. But still, they need to be accustomed to it. They didn't know what might happen to the field if they passed out because of their heavy belongings. They went back to where they came from and went back to their positions. Still panting and breathing heavily as they stand at the firing position. The instructor was just behind them and let them rest for a while.
       "That will be our routine for this whole day. We will be doing sit-ups while your guns were on your shoulders. As well as run fire or cover fire. You all need to be accustomed to it. Now we will be resting for a bit and drink water. We will proceed to the machine gun sit-ups. Yeah! that's how we call it.", he said to them.
       They do sit-ups while carrying the machine gun to their shoulders. It was heavy and thus they gritted their teeth and force themselves to do it. 
       "Count while you do it!", the instructor shouted.
       They were counting while sitting up. They managed to do it till the nineties. Not minding the numbers but focusing their strengths on each sit-up they made. Marlin was also doing his best while he's at it. He persevered like them and was squeezing all his strength with each sit up. The instructor was walking back and forth while he was overseeing them.
      "90..91..92..93..94..95..96..97..98..99..100!", they chorused.
       "Good! Now we go to the firing range! Group yourselves by two! We will proceed with the run fire or cover fire!", he shouted at them.
       They picked each other and Marlin approached the guy that has an army cut. He was tall like him but only an inch shorter. With them meet, Marlin introduced himself.
       "I am Marlin! And you are?", Marlin asked him.
       "I am Bert! Let's do our best!", he said then gave his hands to Marlin.
      Marlin also gave his hands and shakes it. 
      "Okay okay! Now that you all have your partner. You need to cover each other's backs. Now we will train your ability to cover each other. We will be having assault training, rescue training, as well as extermination training. Your assault training will need to be executed without fail. You need to cover fire as you retreat and assault. Rescue training will be one survivor. Imagine it to be a scientist and two of you will be rescuing him. The extermination was the easiest but the most dangerous. You will eliminate a building full of walkers. Let's assume that it has elite zombies there but you will all be trained! So don't stress yourself! You are the guardian of your team so mind that you will be the ones who have to see if your teammates are safe. If someone was hurt, it was the machine gunner who covers for the team when it was critical. You are the tank of the team so you need to be strong! Stronger than others! Is that clear?", the instructor said.
       "Yes sir!", they shouted.
      "Good! Now let's go to the training ground! You need to at least know how to run fire and cover fire. Go go go!", He shouted at them.

      "Go go go! cover his back! Move-in sync! You need to look at your footsteps. Look at his back! When he looks to the east! You look to the west! Be careful not to trip and beware of the one hundred and twenty degrees in your front. Remember that!", he shouted at them.
       They were at first walking while covering. It was a success and it was time for a cover fire while being chased.
       "That was good covering! Now let's proceed to more hardcore! A chase cover fire!", the instructor shouted.
        "When you are running, the other one runs while the other one will be covering for you. After that, the one running will cover for you and vice versa. Imagine it to be the zombies! Now go!", He shouted.
      They at first ran and don't know who will cover. 
       "I will cover and you run. And vice versa", Marlin said to him.
      "Okay!", he replied.
      Marlin covered and then fired the stationary targets. His partner stopped running and covered for him. Firing the target when he sees it.
       They followed the instructions of the instructor and has survived the first day.
      They were lined up and they were all commended by the instructor.
       "This is the first day and all of you surpassed my expectations. You learn well! I congratulate you in advance! Continue that and you will be proper soldiers in no time! I congratulate you all and you are all dismissed! See you again tomorrow!", the instructor said to them.

        "When you are running, the other one runs while the other one will be covering for you. After that, the one running will cover for you and vice versa. Imagine it to be the zombies! Now go!" He shouted.
      They at first ran and don't know who will cover. 
       "I will cover and you run. And vice versa," Marlin said to him.
      "Okay!" he replied.
      Marlin covered and then fired the stationary targets. His partner stopped running and covered for him. Firing the target when he sees it.
       They followed the instructions of the instructor and has survived the first day.
      They were lined up and they were all commended by the instructor.
       "This is the first day and all of you surpassed my expectations. You learn well! I congratulate you in advance! Continue that and you will be proper soldiers in no time! I congratulate you all and you are all dismissed! See you again tomorrow!" the instructor said to them.

Xian Guiying seemed to know what Qin Gengxin was thinking. As she put down the pillow, she found two strands of dog fur under the pillow. She picked them and gave them to Dalisay.
Dalisay stared blankly for a moment, not understanding why Xian Guiying didn't explain to Qin Gengxin that Qin Wenqian were not allowed to touch the fur of this pet.  
Qin Wenqian had touched their neighbor's golden fur dog when she was a year old, and when Xian Guiying brought her back to the house, she almost had a hard time to breath. After being sent to the hospital, the doctor said that the child was allergic to pet fur, so the child should not touch it again; otherwise, it would be very dangerous.
Seeing that Xian Guiying didn't have any expression, Qin Gengxin's expression turned cold, Dalisay didn't dare to speak carelessly, so she turned around and called Darna. The two of them quickly took off the couch cover and checked it.
As soon as they took it off, Qin Gengxin walked over and held Darna's hand, not letting them throw the couch cover away. Instead, he looked at Xian Guiying and said in a voice that was completely devoid of any warmth, "If I remember correctly, everything in this house is as it was before we got married. For the past two years, you haven't changed a single bit."
As he spoke, he took the cover and threw it back on the couch.

Dalisay and Darna looked at each other, urging each other to open their mouths and explain the reasons to Qin Gengxin. However, no one dared to open their mouths in such a stalemate.
Xian Guiying placed the couch cover in the corner next to the couch. She didn't turn to look at anyone but headed for the stairs, clearly intending to pack her things and leave.
Seeing that she showed no signs of giving up or softening, Qin Gengxin naturally knew the stubborn nature in her bones. Yet, over the years, she always listened to him and with her current attitude, he didn't know if he should be angry or say that she was doing something wrong.
He turned his body and looked at the two Filipino servants, who were looking at him. "Put the cover back on the couch."
With that, he turned to leave, not caring if Xian Guiying really wanted to leave or if she returned to her room angrily.
"Em, Mr. Qin." Dalisay suddenly whispered.
Qin Gengxin stopped and turned around. Seeing that the two of them had not yet put back the couch cover, he raised his eyebrow. "Why haven't you done it yet? If it can be taken down, won't it be able to be put back?"
Dalisay bit her lower lip, doubting whether she should open her mouth or not. Darna looked at the couch hesitantly but didn't move.
Qin Gengxin immediately frowned when he saw that these two servants, who were always so diligent, obedient, and efficient when he lived here before, had now disobeyed orders. "I remember that your Chinese are very good. You should understand what I'm saying! Put it back!"
Darna froze for a moment before she turned around hesitantly to look at Dalisay.
Dalisay became anxious and stomped her feet. She rushed forward and stopped two meters from Qin Gengxin. She bit her lip and said, "Mr. Qin, this couch cover must be replaced! Madam is only thinking for the sake of Miss Wenqian's health. She has no other intention but to protect her own child!"
