"I want named her Serefina junior, but I don't think you will like it." Serefina glanced at the baby, she didn't have any idea what name would suit her, thus it was better to leave this insignificant matter to Kace to think about.
Kace's nose scrunched in pure disgust by her idea. He would totally go against it. What kind of name was that?
Kace was looking at the sleeping baby, her lips slightly opened and her little pointed nose was so small. She was so vulnerable, yet she was the most substantial entity in his life.
Kace wished nothing for her but her happiness, just like how she brought the light in the end of the tunnel of his penitence.
And then Kace remembered this poem, the poem that he heard long time ago…

When Kace watched the baby, that poem echoed in his head. The only poem that he remembered because it questions many things that he wanted to ask.
"Hope." Kace caressed the baby's chubby cheeks and rested his forefinger on her small palm, when the baby curled her fingers around it, the warmth spread in Kace's heart. "Her name is Hope."

At first Serefina disagreed with the name that Kace chose for the baby as it sounded weird, but definitely Kace wouldn't even budge with his decision.
Well, he has his own philosophy for this, as that name meant something for him.
Serefina never knew that the youngest Donovan had this sensitive spot and went all the way to this cheesy name. At least, the witch thought that way because when Kace told Ariana and Alec, they liked the name.
The second problem was; Kace disagreed with Serefina's decision to take away his mate and raised her all by herself.
It wasn't that Kace didn't trust her to take care of Hope, but with Serefina's personality, he didn't think that his mate would be in good hand…
But the witch argued him back.
Her point was clear. With Kace and Serefina were not together, it would be difficult for them to be found. Especially when Kace needed to move from one place to another, in order to avoid Jedrek's people, who were still looking for his whereabouts, even after decades had passed.
As for Serefina, she was the master of it. She could chant as much spell as she wanted to protect her surroundings or manipulate her smell, so it was almost impossible to trace her.
But, with Kace near her, his presence alone was a disruption for her spell.
In the end, Kace agreed with Serefina's idea to raise his mate with one condition; Serefina would bring his mate to meet him once a year in her birthday until she reached the age of eighteen when she had mature enough.
Though he had to be separated, but this was for her safety.
In the night before Serefina would bring away his mate, Kace let the baby slept in his arms, spending the entire night to keep her safe in his arms.
"Why don't you sleep?" Ariana sat down next to Kace as she smiled at the baby.
"I just want to spend a little more time with her." Kace stated, there was no trace of tiredness on his face as firmly cradled the baby in his strong arms.
"She is so cute. I bet she will be a beauty when she grows up." Ariana caressed the baby's black hair. "I think you want her to grow up quickly." She made a conclusion.
Yet, Kace shook his head. "No. I just want her to live happily, cherish every moment and be healthy."
The sound of the Lycan's voice was very genuine and pure.
As Kace had given her, her name and watched her grew up. Kace would be everything for her. Her brother, her guardian, her protector and everything that she needed.
He would shower her with love.
"Hm, I agree with that…" Ariana nodded. "But, I still can't believe it that you have a mate. I don't know if the moon goddess had lifted the curse from the three of you."
If Ariana didn't watch the way Kace reacted around Hope, she wouldn't believe it, but Kace's overprotectiveness and the way he looked her it confirmed everything.
"Not many people know about this." but now, Alec and Ariana knew about it as well.
"Regardless, I am happy for you." Ariana said sincerely.
"Thank you…" but, before even Kace could give Ariana a proper respond, Serefina had stormed inside the room and with her demanding tone, she said;
"We need to go from here, immediately." Serefina walked over toward Kace and extending her arms, asking for Hope. "Maximus will be here in less than five minutes."

“Protectors!!?” Jedrek snapped. In the end, he stopped walking and turned his back to look at the moon goddess from far distance away, his eyes glistening red with anger. His wolf was livid. 

“Why do you think we will help?” Kace asked while narrowing his black obsidian eyes, his wolf took control of him. He was the youngest among the three and the less temperamental among them.

The three of them were cursed by Selene because of their ferocious action to gain supreme power and authority. 

The moon goddess didn’t bless them with a mate as a punishment of their atrocious way and forced them to involve in this deadly war with the demons.

“You will turn us into a slave for those sickly creatures!?” Torak asked incredulously. “Aren’t you afraid that we will snap them into two?”

The guardian angel was so fragile and they as lycanthropes didn’t appreciate the weaknesses.

“No, you will not.” Selene said patiently. “You will not be their slave nor hurt them, you will cherish them in every way possible.”

Jedrek laughed menacingly upon hearing this, they didn’t care about the resurrected of the beast, once they crossed their territory, with or without the guardian angel he would tear their body apart. “I will be the last person they will see, once I find them.” He was referring to both the guardian angel and the demon.

But, the next voice from Selene was laced with mirth when she spoke.

“You will not hurt your mate.”

Satu tahun yang lalu Raine dikeluarkan dari Rumah sakit Jiwa dan harus hidup di Panti Asuhan. Itu memang bukan tempat yang terbaik, tapi setidaknya tidak bagi orang sepertinya.

“Jangan,” kata Torak dengan lembut. “Aku ingin melihatmu, jadi jangan menyembunyikan dirimu…”

“Kekuatan jiwa dari para Guardian Angel akan bernafas di kehidupan baru dari anak manusia. Tiga Guardian Angel akan lahir ke dunia terrestrial dan sekali lagi, kalian bertiga akan menjadi pelindung mereka.”

“Kau akan membuat kami menjadi budak dari makhluk lemah seperti mereka?!” Torak bertanya dengan tidak percaya. “Tidakkah dirimu takut kalau kami akan mematahkan mereka menjadi dua?” 

Para Guardian Angel itu sangatlah rapuh dan mereka, sebagai Lycanthropes, sangat tidak mengapresiasi segala bentuk kelemahan. 

“Tidak, kamu tidak akan melakukan itu.” Selene berkata dengan sangat sabar. “Kalian tidak akan menjadi budak mereka ataupun meyakiti para Guardian Angel, kalian akan menghargai mereka dalam hal apapun.”

Tapi, suara Selene selanjutnya di selimuti dengan sebuah kebahagiaan saat dia berbicara.

“Kalian tidak akan pernah menyakiti pasangan jiwa kalian.”

Joe looked calm as he boarded the bus from Nairobi CBD on his way to the countryside to meet his 'fiancee' whom he had not seen a whole twelve months, she had received the message of the arrival of a baby, a baby he had been anxiously waiting because of reasons. Reasons as hidden as the outcome. He was suspicious of several things. His relationship with Maina was no longer what he thought. Baring in mind that he was working in the same school with this so called 'fiancee' there were so many unanswered questions in his mind.
In fact part of him was almost convinced that they had shared the same plate with Maina and that the kid might even be his.
He could not hold his anger. He could feel the wrath rising in him like mercury in a thermometer. The anger blinded him, reddened his eyes such that even the person seated next to him in the matatu made to move further to avoid causing trouble.
He made to look outside the window to try and forget everything but he ,couldn't. He took a deep breath and sat still. That when he realised he had gone too far that he didn't even hear the loud banging music in matatu.
He chose to at least listen to the music to overcome the stream of thoughts in his  mind.

Yea, why doesn't everything cease, the thinking, the heartbreak, the fake friendship, why....
Why must he have a woman in his life,
Why must he have a good house, a job, a car for him to secure a status in the society.
Why should he follow the footsteps of his father to be a teacher?
Why must he work so had to achieve a good grade academically yet there was success without academic excellence.

He was distracted by the chill outside, it was too cold so closed the window and realised they were already at Limuru, the vehicle was really speeding. He thought of how fast he was arriving home.
He wanted to first meet Mariam, see the baby before proceeding to plan B.
His plan B was to go meet Maina, confront him because of his cunning nature, why he would choose to back bite him.
All this would be prompted by his first encounter with Mariam and the baby. If the baby showed any signs of resemblance  with Maina, he was pretty sure that someone would end up with a broken nose. Maina would have to explain in diagrams how he would have chosen to be sleeping with his girlfriend.

No, not his girlfriend...lets say his f*ck mate.
Since that instance he had of Mariam seducing and laying his friends, his heart had frozen and locked the doors of love he had intended to open for her.
 The law of love has it that, if you don't respect my feelings you cant treasure a heart.
He was no longer attracted to her...no, he longer loved her but he could not avoid her beauty.
She had a stunning beauty was blinding. Since she was a kid Joe had always seen that beauty more than breath taking. He had spend quite a time in his life  thinking he had and would never encounter such a gorgeous woman.

"mwisho wa gari....mwisho wa gari weuwee..."

Days passed and the living doll my parents took home from some unknown place called hospital nearly captured my home. Especially her cries in the middle of the night threw me in utter annoyance. Many times I asked my dad how long she is going to live with us and my dad always just smiled in response and I somehow managed to tolerate everything and accepted the fact that she's going nowhere, at least not in the near future.
So I just decided to ignore her presence even when she's messing up with my favourite toys, I just pretended to see nothing, but that little demon was so hungry for attention that she almost tried everything to get me angry. She one day crossed all the limits and tore my favourite colourful rhymes book. I was so mad that I almost lose control but as she was so favourite to my parents, my hands were tied. I couldn't do anything for her but I decided to leave my house.
And I did, I walked and walked until the roads became unknown and an unfamiliar fear crossed my mind but I couldn't just go back coz that's about self-respect.
So I sat near the pond and started crying and sat there until my mom came and fetch me home.
And fortunately, my dad brought a pair of beautiful rhyme books for me so I gave up the grudge.
One day it was raining heavily and my mom was so busy in her daily household chores and I was reciting a poem I already remember sitting beside the bed where my newborn baby sister was lying.
I don't know what was wrong with her but she was crying badly and breaking my concentration. I was getting so irritated and just to continue my peaceful recitation I looked for my mother and couldn't find her so I just tried to calm the little girl crying so badly.
As I moved closer to her she stopped her crying for a while and looked at me as if she wants to say something but she was not elder enough to say something, and then again continued to cry even more than before... I couldn't just ignore her and I made up mind to calm her no matter what.
I started reciting my poem like a song and to my surprise, she stopped crying and hold my hand with her tender little fingers.
I felt like winning a war, and so proud.. I then tried to take back my hand to continue my way but she again started crying as soon as I stopped singing.
With no option left I started singing again until she fell asleep and I still continued in the fear that if I'd stop singing she might get wake and continue her unfinished cry. And looking at her innocent sleeping face I felt like keep on singing.
I don't know how long I sang but I eventually fell asleep.
And from that day an inevitable bond just came out of nowhere and I acknowledged her to be my sister. My sister for life, a little version of anger and innocence.My lovely sister.

"A teacher is good," I reply. "Good teachers are like precious jewels. Teachers with a heart for their students are indispensable."
"Once he learnt that we are building a house and digging a well up here, he offered to bring his relatives to help us. We can use the bigger money that we have to pay them for their silence and their assistance. It is too much for me to be able to build everything on my own before winter. There is too much to do. Gentle Whiskers is planning to go out to check on some of his patients again soon. He will be taking both Fluttering Bird and Keen Eyes."
"What about you?"
"We need to build the house. I will stay behind to get it done so that everyone can be more comfortable. Wen Ming, the scholar, is coming tomorrow with his relatives to have a look. I know you find it hard to have new people around and to have to meet them. You can just stay near the cave to rest. You don't have to come out if you don't want to. Please put up with it for a while and take care of yourself. It will be busy these few days."

"Make sure they don't trample our garden," I say, closing my eyes. 
The villagers arrive early and Fighter hurries out to meet them. Gentle Whiskers and Keen Eyes also go to help. Some of the village women have joined them, bringing food. The women look strong and robust. I want to envy their strong muscles but dare not. Fluttering Bird and Swaying Blossom go with Baby Tofu to watch, eventually joining in. I hide near the back, keeping an eye on Baby Tofu, flinching at the loud noises.
Baby Tofu starts to make a fuss and it is only after Fighter straps him to his back that Baby Tofu settles down. While they work, I see the willowy scholar referencing a picture Fighter has drawn and explaining things to Baby Tofu while they work whenever Baby Tofu points. Eventually Baby Tofu falls asleep and is left in my lap, so that the men can get their work done properly. The village women try to talk to me, but seeing how I shrink from them and am silent, they soon leave me alone. Their eyes narrow at me with unhappiness. Keen Eyes says something to them quietly as he passes by and the women's eyes soon light up in understanding. After that, the women are more accepting and speak in softer tones when they are near me.
After lunch, Fluttering Bird helps me back to the caves, helping me to bed and one of the village women follows with curiosity. Baby Tofu complains at being brought back and Fluttering Bird takes him back to the building site so that he will not disturb me. The village woman stays.
She cleans and mends and gathers things, chattering all the while. She talks about the village and her family, her husband and her siblings. She chirps and then sings like a song thrush until I fall asleep. Even while I sleep, I can hear the sound of her keeping herself busy and singing folk songs while she works.
In my sleep, I thrash at a nightmare, waking with a near scream in my throat and cold sweat. Song Thrush is immediately by my side. Although I cannot understand everything she says because she speaks too quickly and with too strong an accept for me to follow, I appreciate that she has cleaned and organised our camp while I slept. She has finished mending all the clothes that had yet to be sewn and has helped the girls continue with continuing to make the shoes that had been set aside.
A cup of warm soup is placed in my hands, while my face and neck are dabbed dry with a warm, moist cloth. Her hand strokes my back when I choke because my throat is too tight to swallow properly. Out of my sweat soaked clothes, she helps wipe me down and put on warm, dry clothes. Tiredly, I lean against a wall, watching her sew with strong, nimble fingers. If only I were as strong and able.
A sleeping Baby Tofu is returned to my side and seeing my sweaty clothes to the side, Swaying Blossoms comes to check that I am all right. She takes my clothes to wash immediately. Meanwhile, I listen to Song Thrush sing and am lulled back to a dreamless although still unsettled sleep.
Everyone returns for an early evening meal and I am nudged awake by a hungry Baby Tofu who has smelled dinner. I don't know why I am so tired and nervous. Loud noises and rough laughter make me jump. Despite that, I observe that the scholar during dinner, cannot bring himself to stop teaching people. 
The different names of a few common herbs contained in a poem. A classical poem about family. Teaching his relatives how to write their names using sticks in the dirt. Teaching Baby Tofu the names of things he points to. Explaining the meaning of a proverb and the story behind it. Expounding upon the morals of the proverb. Discussing the various uses of certain words, their common and literary uses. 
He plays at riddles and helps different people to derive the answer without telling it to them directly. He plays at couplets and poem making with Fighter, Gentle Whiskers and Keen Eyes and explains them to those less learned. The scholar truly cannot stop himself from teaching. And he is talented in being able to teach without others feeling that he is looking down on them or that he is belittling their little knowledge. Instead, he encourages, facilitates and can teach without people realising what he is doing. He is not boastful or as proud as one would expect. When he is wrong, he accepts the correction gracefully.
Not bad. Not bad. His looks aren't bad either. No wonder he caught Swaying Blossoms' eye.
Before the light goes, the villagers hurry back down the mountain. I have not seen how he interacts with Swaying Blossoms much but I hope he doesn't spend all their time together trying to teach her. A man who feels he knows all and is constantly teaching and is unable to relax will not be able to care for his wife very well.
The next day, Song Thrush works with the others on the flat ground while I water the garden. I am amazed at how fast the progress is with so many people to help. Baby Tofu plays happily in a pile of mud to one side and I wince at the amount of washing he and his clothes will have to undergo later. In the meantime, he may as well enjoy himself.
The well has a continuous stream of people entering and leaving it with pots or baskets dripping with mud. Flat stones have already been laid onto the steps to hopefully make things less slippery. I hear Tutor revising his plans and strategies with his relatives and Fighter over and over again, attempting to find the quickest and most efficient way of doing things. His relatives all laugh at him and smear mud on him when his nagging gets too annoying. Realising this, Tutor stops talking and retaliates with a handful of mud. There is a mud fight that only ends when a stray mud ball lands on my face.
Multiple eyes glance at me in worry but cheer up the moment I start laughing. It feels like the sun has come out to bathe me in the warm rays of happiness. I wipe the mud off and flick bits of it at Baby Tofu who shrieks at the attack, joining in the fun and flinging mud everywhere. With everyone covered in mud, the workers continue their work while Baby Tofu and I are eventually marched to the stream by a frowning Fluttering Bird and laughing Song Thrush. Baby Tofu and I have a water fight and are soundly scolded by Swaying Blossoms when she arrives to see what is taking so long. Seeing she still has mud on her, she is dragged into the water with us too.
While we wash the clothes and a random stalk of grass is wrestled out of Baby Tofu's mouth, the sound of trickling water being squeezed out of the clothes triggers a memory. It is like the windows have been closed, leaving me in the dark. There is the sound of the water falling onto the Stack, trickling through the bamboo slats of my dim box. I am trapped in the box, listening to the sound of the Strong Cooks gambling on which box will be the next to be dropped into the deep pool. My skin feels swollen, my eyes have long swelled shut. I can barely move and don't want to move. Moving elicits pain. I want to be good. So good that I will be permitted to rest forever underwater.
Screams and slapping hands patting my cheeks wake me up. Crying voices call me but I do not understand. What are they trying to say? I choke on water I have breathed in, coughing and vomiting it up. A baby wails and clings to me, refusing to let me go. I am confused. Where am I? Where am I? Who am I now? What is going on? How did I get here?
A fluttering girl leads a running man with a panic stricken face. A man my memory remembers as once being surrounded by yellow robes. He is dressed in coarse, muddy clothes now. After a cursory wash to get rid of most of the mud, he carries me back to the caves where an older man with a long grey beard is waiting. All our clothes are dripping. My blurry vision cannot see much. It hurts to breathe. It hurts to talk. Somehow I am warmed and dried and put to bed, together with a still crying baby that will not let me go. Who's baby is this? Where did it come from? Its howling pierces my ears.
I shrink from the man that was the Emperor. I am confused by the mix of feelings colliding in me when he holds my hand. I pull my hand from him. He is the enemy. He is one I can trust. He is the Emperor. He is not dressed like the Emperor anymore so he cannot be the Emperor. Perhaps I am dreaming but the dream is so real. I am afraid. A trap. It must be a trap.
"Tofu, talk to me."
Worried voices chatter and I don't understand what is going on. I want to know who this man is. I cannot work it out. My mind is too foggy. Can I trust him or not?
"Who are you?"

This is the story of the Third Princess of Guoyuan, Lin Singhua, after she was captured by the Emperor of Meihua. When psychologically broken and tortured in the prisons, she remoulds herself into thinking she is tofu. This is an exploration of the mental state of a crushed captive, and of how Tofu mentally protects herself in order to survive by running away from herself and her own memories. 

In order to reflect Tofu's mindset, the complexity of language may change according to her mental state at the time.

This story contains mature content and adult themes. It is not a romance or love story. More an exploration of Singhua's thoughts and psychology following the traumatic events in her life. Some areas may appear to be cut short or not explored in depth because as the author, when I immersed myself too deeply in Singhua's world it became unhealthy for my own mental state. Nevertheless, please feel free to make comment.

The location is set in a fictional version of historical China, approximately during the time there were many warring kingdoms or states. It also has mixed up historical elements from different time periods. In order to reflect that this is in a roughly Chinese setting, some Pinyin names have been retained.
