When I began writing the biography of Death, I was not sure where it would lead me. Real life inspiration and the darkest recesses of my mind competed to see which could be the more sinister. To a large extent I blindly followed them, and merely wrote down whatever sweet songs of madness they crooned to me along the trail. 

Like most writers I wrangled friends and relatives into giving me feedback. One, a millennial snowflake, was invaluable. They seemed to consider this fantasy nightmare I had created, to be some sort of manifesto. For the record this book is pure fiction. Fiction inspired by real world events in a few cases, but fiction nonetheless. Like all works of supernatural horror, this book is meant to be entertainment. It is perhaps a meditation on the zeitgeist of the modern west, but it is still as fictional as 1984 or A Christmas Carol. 

Another person seemed bothered by the apparent moral contradictions in my lead character. To this I can only say that a man is the sum of his contradictions. People love to apply the rules to others, but find reasons to grant themselves exceptions to their own rules. I did not want an incorruptible white knight monster. I wanted a complex and thinking human monster. To my way of thinking his inconsistency was his most human feature, even after he leaves his humanity behind. 

Should anyone find a mirror image to themselves in these pages, then it is only their own ego. The sum of this work has been so thoroughly washed in the waters of horror and fantasy that no living or deceased human could ever be reasonably compared to its contents. 

No rational person could ever compare the buffoons portrayed in these pages to a real life counterparts. Any person contending to the contrary is either a snowflake melting in the flames of my mad vision, or a lunatic in desperate need of having their mental faculties examined by a competent professional, I have time for neither. The fact that this book is fiction cannot be over emphasized.

Death, a Biography, is a fictional horror novel. It is crass, violent, profane, and not meant for the light hearted reader. Imagine living in a world surrounded by fools. For years your frustration grows, and no matter what you try to do you cannot free yourself from the preverbal ideocracy. Nom DePlume is just such a man, only one day he is granted the dearest wish of his heart. Nom, a grad student working as a truck driver is: intelligent, well educated, and the sort of person who always can find a reason to have a chip on his shoulder. One day while driving in Texas he finds that he has the ability to wish death on those he hates. Being scientifically minded, Nom proceeds to experiment searching out the scopes of his new found powers. He begins in Texas, a state he despises. As he moves on from each experiment, he picks his prey to match some facet of modern western life that he hates. Each receive a fate customized to match what Nom feels they did wrong. Nom then travels home to Michigan after initially defining his new role in life. In Michigan he uses his powers to settle a few old scores and family business. A run-in with an old friend convinces him that he is being selfish for not using his god like powers to better mold humanity. The end of the book sees him taking on the leader of the free world. Nom now personifying Death, learns that he has a true foe, Life.Nom will return.

Chapter 1: Earnest Instructions before Admission to School

When my mom sent me off at the train station, she sighed and said, "Linlin, look at how lucky you are! You can even get into Peking University! After you get to college, your first mission is to make sure you aren't kicked out of school, your second mission is to lose weight, and your third mission is to find an excellent college boyfriend, so that even if you don't have this kind of luck in the next generation, you can still lean on our genetic inheritance and allow your future generations to go to a great college."

Why did my mom only send me to the train station, and not accompany me to my new school? It was all because my mom had seen the top student of our town on television. The person who had tested into the exact same college as I had was a boy- a pretty boy, to be more precise. My mom loved pretty boys, her old idol being Won Bin. She went through numerous contacts to get that person's number and then she called him herself.

"Hello? Is this fellow student Fang Yuke? Hi. I am Zhou Linlin's mom. It's like this: didn't my Linlin test into the same college you did...Oh, you're not familiar with the area... No problem, no problem. After you go around a bit you'll be familiar with it. As for my Linlin, this is her first time going to a far away place, but her dad and I just happened to join a tourist group. Thus, could you do me a favor and keep an eye on my Linlin for awhile? Please. If there's time you can come to auntie's house."

I sat next to her, feeling bashful. I had no impressions of a tourist group. If she was willing to pay money to go traveling, the sun might as well come up from the western side.

And then there was Fang Yuke- even though we were classmates, our rotten school emphasized the importance of the sciences. Their sciences building practically resembled a palace, while the liberal arts students, including me, were put in a lonely corner, with about the same amount of land as where the palace maids would have lived. Even though we were classmates for three years, I had never met him face to face, and could only spot him from afar when the school awards were given out. I only knew that he had been named the most excellent boy on campus by our school girls, and that he was our principal's grandson. He, of course, never lost the principal's face. He didn't even have to move and he would receive some first place award. The glass display window in our school always posted an inchlong photo of him on it, and next to that was written his birthday, 7/18/1984, which year he had been named one of the top three students of the year, and on which month he had received an award, etc.

I used to make fun of it with my friend, Yao Zi, "Look at that photo- it looks so much like a first generation ID card. With those remarks, it all resembles an obituary. It's fortunate that our little town doesn't have a recommended-for-admission quota, or else this kind of person wouldn't even need to take the Gao Kao [1], and would immediately go to Tsinghua University or Peking University. I heard that when the Gao Kao grades were posted, Peking University called him and let him choose his major. Going with this person to university increases the pressure on me; plus he'll definitely despise someone like me. Alas, after I go to Peking University people everyone will be like him. I feel my head hurt whenever I think about it. As the saying goes, I would rather be a chicken's head than a phoenix's tail [2], so what's the point of registering for Peking University for the honor of my ancestors only to do wrong to myself?"

Speaking of this, before the Gao Kao, my grades went along a wavy line. Sometimes it would be twice the amount of my valleys. I had even drawn a line chart for every time I tested. According to the direction of the line chart, my Gao Kao grade should have dipped into a valley. I didn't think that my Gao Kao grade would exceed my daily trend, and rush to the top of Mount Everest, so when I received my Gao Kao grade via a short text, and saw the number of zeros and the two digit number, I kept feeling that the text could have made a mistake.

At our household meeting, I repeatedly asked my mom, "I was 28th in the province? Really? Really?"

My mom stared at me, "You've thought about examination places to the point of being crazy right? How could it be possible, it must be that your school is in 28th place."

That was when my prudent father spoke up, "She's in front of so many 0's, it looks like it should be out of 100 of 100,000s of students, so following this line of thinking, it should be the provincial rankings."

After the whole scene quieted for about a minute, my mom quickly took the phone and called my big aunt, "Big sister, a big meat pie [3] has hit my home's Linlin!"

I had managed to hack into the Gao Kao and as well as the system by which we filled out our college preferences.

The moment I entered the train car, I found that there was already a guy sitting across from me. His white, clean face, was framed by a pair of black rimmed glasses. He looked a little like the famous Khalil Fong. One of his hands flipped through a copy of National Geographic, while his other hand twirled a ballpoint pen. Seriously, who holds a pen while reading National Geographic?

I tentatively asked, "Are you Fang Yuke?"

He lifted his head, but the pen in his hand never stopped, "Mm, that's me."

I immediately threw out my biggest smile, "Hello, hello. I am Zhou Linlin. Please take care of me." When I finished I immediately took out my stack of snacks and put them on Xiao Fang's table [4] for him to eat. Fang Yuke coldly said, "Nice to meet you," and continued flipping through his magazine.

Not too long afterwards, I heard a sound of knocking glass. I turned around; it was my mom. She blinked to me and protruded her lip towards Fang Yuke, and made a "You can do it!" gesture. I gave a hopeless breath, rolled my eyes, and angrily said, "Can you stop?"

This time, I startled the person wrapped up in his magazine, Fang Yuke. He stared at my angry face and said, "If a girl has a bad temper she won't be able to marry." He didn't wait for me to reply before he went back to his reading again.

The train finally thundered forward. I couldn't come up with anything to say so I grabbed a copy of Soulmate [5]. I flipped through a few pages and felt extremely bored. I didn't have anything to say but I tried to say something anyways, "Fang Yuke, how did you get into Peking University?"

Fang Yuke didn't lift his head, and continued to twirl the pen, "I was always first in school so this is normal."

"Oh. It's so fortunate that I somehow also tested in, otherwise you would be the only person who made it in from the whole town. Then, you would be so lonely! Hehe." I laughed, but in actuality, my wound had been ripped open again and sprinkled with salt.

Throughout the whole train ride, I lonesomely sent short texts, looked through Soulmate, and ate chicken feet. I had nothing else to do. On the other hand, Fang Yuke acted like a statue who sat opposite me, reading his magazine. If it wasn't for his twirling pen, I would have suspected he wasn't a living creature. In the end, I became drowsy, lay on the small table, and fell asleep. Within my haze, I was woken up by Fang Yuke, "Hey, you can go to the berth to sleep." I wiped away the saliva on my mouth, and trudged to the back, I didn't even take off my shoes, I just lay on the berth not conscious of anything else. When I woke up, Fang Yuke who was opposite me was reading again. What a nerd.

After more than ten hours had passed, the train finally reached its stop.

However, when we arrived at the train station early on a Sunday, the school didn't arrange for anyone to pick us up. Fang Yuke and I looked  for a taxi to take us directly to Peking University. The taxi driver and I chatted very amiably, Fang Yuke was like ice beside me, cooling the atmosphere. When I had someone to talk to, the time passed quickly and I felt it hadn't passed too long before the driver said that we had arrived. I got off the car. When I looked up I could see the two classic words of "Peking University" that I had often seen on TV.

I threw my suitcase aside, and stood under the big plaque as I told Fang Yuke, "Classmate Fang Yuke, help me take some pictures. If the developed picture doesn't have me in it, it will mean  that I am really dreaming."

Fang Yuke saw my idiotic expression and he shook his head saying to me, "Can you not be so childish?"

I laughed, "We aren't the same. You guys look at Peking University like you've seen your family. When you were born it was already determined that you will be  a Peking University student, and you don't have any feelings for it. I am not the same. I am a stalk of grass that was married into this wealthy family. I don't know if other wealthy people are regretful. If I'm kicked out, this picture will be evidence of my marriage, it can prove that I used to live a wealthy life."

I woke up with a start at the slamming noise of the car door shutting. As I adjusted my eyes to the darkness of the midnight groggily, I saw that Vikash had the front seat in an inclined position and was resting. On looking towards the sharp sound, I could see Master Da entering the car.

I looked at my watch and it was around 3:00 a.m.

In a sleepy tone, I asked Master da "What happened, why are you in the hospital?"

Master da replied, "I am planning on waiting for Maanya. Tomorrow morning we will go home together."

I could not help but observe that whenever Miss. Sengupta was anywhere Master da, he exhibits a certain softness and tenderness in his behaviour. It was hard not to notice the increasing proximity and caring between Miss Sengupta and Master da. 

After master da lost his family a few years back, he has disconnected himself from this world and mostly kept to himself or in the company of the children of the villages. I had the better sense to keep my thoughts to myself and not bring them up in front of Master Da and bring up old wounds.

Vikash was awake and enquired if we wanted some tea and I replied yes. He gestured the tea seller and ordered 3 cups of black tea. It is said that black tea is very good for relieving stress.

As we were waiting for our tea, I gathered the courage to ask master da more about Miss. Sengupta and the incident that took place in Mrs. Das residence.

"Master da if you don't mind, can I ask you something?" 

 He replied, "Of course, go ahead."

"What happened in Mrs. Das residence that evening, and how do you know about Tribeni Majumdar?" I asked.

Master da burst out laughing. 

"What happened… did I say something wrong…"

Still unable to control his laughter he continued "Do you believe in Karma? Do you believe that you need to do just one good deed in your life, and God will send someone to protect you till eternity?"

I replied "To tell you the truth, I am not much of a believer in God or Karma, but my experience during the past few days has restored my faith in a higher power. But what has that incident got to do anything with Karma."

"Do you remember, I once told you I teach children from the villages," asked Master da.

"Yes... why," I asked.

"Well, what happened was my reputation within the villages in Purulia grew to such an extent that the villagers and children nicknamed me Master. My house is considered a protective sanctuary for anyone, be it a villager who is in trouble or any person in need of help." 

"During my years with the movement, I happened to meet Tribeni Majumdar once, and he showed an immense deal of respect towards my intellectual knowledge and my philanthropic activities."

"Due to political pressure, Mr. Majumdar went into hiding back in 1984 and was never seen again. Just last week, he came and met me and said that he wanted to surrender and if I knew anyone from the home ministry, I should call them." 

"I knew only one person from the West Bengal Civil Services, Maanya Sengupta. So I decided to call her and tell her about him."

"Remember the very day, you and Vikash came to my home with your sister and told me all about that child, Tribeni Da was hiding inside the house and heard everything."

"I was in a dilemma on how to convince the teacher to quit, and then Tribeni dada gave me a great idea to make sure, she stays away from Geeta."

"Right after you guys left, Maanya came to my place from Kolkata and I introduced her to Tribeni Dada."

"They came here to check out Geeta's condition with the doctor. You might be thinking, how come no one recognized him in the hospital, then it's simple, no one has seen him for 24 years."

"Now here the main story starts. Maanya had a daughter Sunaina who was killed in a road accident 7 years ago. You might have remembered that the sports body of India organized a tournament to find the 10 best basketball players from the country who would represent India in Youth Olympics 1994 in Florida. That day the team from Bengal played a match against Tripura. After the match, they were returning to their training centre when they met with an accident. All the players were killed except for 4 of them."

I interrupted "Master da, we have seen the newspaper reports, It says there were 2 survivors only."
"You are right, even though the newspaper reports mentioned that there were 2 survivors, but the truth was there were 4 survivors of which 1 of them died on the way to the hospital, and the other one died 2 days later." clarified Master da.

He continued "According to Maanya, she says that the eyewitness reports say that 2 children who looked like they were not more than 7 or 8 years old, tried their best to pull out all the children from the bus before it caught fire and exploded." 

"The 2 children who tried to rescue the children, suffered a lot of burns due to the explosion and were also admitted in serious condition. She later came to know that both the children were in a comatose state."

Their parents got them transferred to a different hospital with the hope of a better treatment. 

Maanya has been searching for the children since that day because she is grateful and believes that just because of the bravery of those 2 children, she was able to hear her child's voice for the last time."

"Master da do you know the names of these 4 kids?" I asked.

He replied, "No, the sports body decided not to reveal the names of the 4 kids and due to a lot of pressure from the higher authorities, Maanya was not able to intervene in that case."

Did I hear it right, "Why would the higher up's stop a cop from doing her duty." I asked.

"Well, we both have been trying to figure out the answer to that question all these years." he replied.
"So did she find the children?" I asked.

Master da continued, "After her child died, Maanya has been searching for the 2 children ever since. Till today she has not given up on those children. With time passing the chances of finding the whereabouts of the 2 children grew slim to none. All Maanya could find out was how the children looked, and that too through a photograph which her daughter had."

"Amidst all those investigations that took place for the search of the missing children, on the eve of 22nd December 1993, Maanya came really close to finding one of the 2 kids when Mr. Banerjee approached her to help his child. When she saw the child's photo and the police report, her search ended, she found the child she was looking for."

"She started to keep a close watch over the child, helping the child in every way possible. However, one day the child went missing again. She came to know from Mr. Banerjee that he had sent the child abroad to complete the studies."

"Sorry to interrupt you master da, but I have a question?" I replied.

"Yes... tell me..."

"That day when Mr. Banerjee came and told you she was Addl. Superintendent of Police, Did you pretend that you never knew, she was a cop or you really meant it?" I paused a little and continued "I mean, your face clearly indicated that you didn't know that she was a cop." I asked.

"You are right, I didn't know, she was a cop. I knew that she cleared the West Bengal Civil Services, so I concluded that she would have taken up an administration job instead of opting for the state police service. An administrative officer, doing investigative work was not a new thing."

"Now coming back, 6 years passed and then Tribeni Dada happened. I told Maanya about Mrs. Das and Geeta and then she agreed to help me, find out a way to convince her to leave. They came to the hospital that night when everyone had left. They interacted with the doctors and when Maanya saw your friend Geeta in that condition, she was moved to tears. She couldn't bear to see a child in such a poor condition. Her maternal instincts clicked in and she promised me that she will not leave Purulia till she is absolutely sure the child is safe"

"Maanya, Tribeni dada and I devised a plan to trap her. She called up her team in Kolkata and did a background verification on the teacher, which included her phone records, bank transactions, etc." 

"We wanted to find out a loophole that can help us in blackmailing her to quit. We found out that every month thousands of rupees are transferred into her account. and in the name of tuitions, she only teaches one child, someone at the Banerjee residence. She lives in a bungalow which according to her husband doesn't belong to them, but has been gifted to her by Mr. Banerjee."

"Finally, Tribeni da came up with a plan. He asked us to try talking to her nicely first, if she agrees then it is fine, however, if she doesn't listen, then they should make a plan of action."

"Maanya should inform her team that one of her trusted sources has informed her that one of the most wanted Naxalite leader Tribeni Majumdar who has been in hiding for the last 24 years has suddenly surfaced and is going to meet someone in Purulia. She and her team should monitor every single calls in Purulia."

"Amidst all the monitoring her team suddenly came up with an idea. Of all the calls they were tracking, a team also started to monitor any newly activated numbers, as they believed that every criminal would want to cover their tracks by calling from numbers which was never used before."

"That Idea came as a ray of sunshine and we decided to order a new mobile phone using Mrs. Das credentials which we recovered from the local police station when the Banerjee's had to do a police verification."

We had to visit his residence and as planned Maanya made the call from her residence and her team was able to backtrace the call, which would show up from her house and then we could easily convince her to quit the job or go behind bars, and we both know what would be her answer. 

"Later on we could get a lawyer for her and get her out on bail and considering the judicial system of India, she would be a free woman." 

"The 3 of us felt that it is a good decision, and no one would be harmed, however, the problem happened when she used those derogatory words against that child and finally after what happened yesterday in the hospital, Maanya thought it would be better for her to spend a few days behind bars."

"Wow... I don't believe it... You guys have gone to such an extent... What if you land into some sort of trouble." I asked.

Master da replied, "Trust me, everything has been planned to the last detail."

Master da's honest but nonchalant description of all these events scared me to a huge extent. I could not shake this impending sense of doom and logic that if I stay with that man, I might end up in some trouble sooner or later. 

It feels like my father is right, I should be immensely careful of the company I keep. But in the current context, I had no other option but to maintain my cordialness with him. Not because of Geeta, but for the sake of my family, I had to be strong.

A lot of things had happened during the past 19 hours. The number of surprises I received was enough to render me sleepless for a few days. Amidst all this, I kept wondering where were the missing pages of the journal, What happened to that child of Mr. Banerjee. 
Where have they been during the past 6 years? Gosh... things are really getting confusing and much too mysterious out here...

How would you react if you find out about someone who is being forced to live a life against their own will? A destiny that was supposed to be fulfilled, but circumstances and the people around her would not let her have that life. Know that the someone being referred to is only 11 years old.

and forced him to consider that there is definite oddness about her which he cannot figure out.  All his attempts at trying to get to the bottom of this seem to be thwarted by the walls and people keeping Geeta hidden

    固定时空1983时间用完，朱闻天回到现实之中，此时天色已经亮了，朱闻天首先确定了一下时间，整个固定时空1983所耗费的现实时间竟然不到10个小时。
　　从床上坐起来，朱闻天稍稍规划了一下，随即起床在别墅周围汶河公园运动了一圈儿，返回之后便打开好久不用的电脑，开始做固定时空后面的准备。
　　此时距离现实世界大学报到已经没有几天了，朱闻天是因为小墨的事情，心中有些不舒服，这才从家中出来了。
　　从固定时空退出之后，朱闻天第一时间想到的便是这事，最为清楚的那对双胞胎的无辜小眼神......
　　电脑启动起来，朱闻天强行让自己冷静下来，现实之中的纷扰实在是让他有点儿烦，接下来他还准备把固定时空近两年时间给登录完毕。不过在那之前，他需要记忆一些东西。
　　首先是华夏八九十年代的经典老歌，朱闻天至少得强记住足够一个磁带专辑使用的数量，至少20首以上。
　　并且上次是姚媛出的女声磁带专辑，虽然其中也有一些男声更适合的歌曲，但是这会儿朱闻天觉得下一盘磁带专辑最好是男声的，这样比较能够平衡一下大家的喜好。
　　而对于拿别人的“劳动果实”，朱闻天并没有觉得怎么样，反正是在固定时空用，对现实又没有什么影响。
　　除了话语经典老歌之外，八十年代英语经典老歌也是朱闻天此次的目标，只不过朱闻天自己都不知道是不是有精力能够记住那么多就是了。
　　排除杂念，迅速投入到了“工作”之中，朱闻天发现自己的效率还是非常高的，自从体质发生提升之后，朱闻天的记忆就明显提升了不少。
　　因而在搜出了100首1980s的歌曲之后，排除《跟着感觉走》中曾经出现的歌曲，以及1984之前固定时空已经存在的歌曲，朱闻天迅速挑选了20多首，开始强行记忆。
　　这个工作前前后后也没有花费多少时间，大概半个多小时的样子吧，因为这些经典老歌朱闻天基本上听过旋律，很多拿过来之后就会唱，只不过此前有些陌生罢了。
　　也就是说朱闻天主要是记忆歌词，而不是旋律，这就简单多了，凭借他的超强记忆能力，已经算不得什么事情了。
　　趁着记忆华夏歌曲的兴致，朱闻天稍后也筛选了20多首1984年之后发行的经典英文歌曲，不过这个记忆难度就大了不少。
　　好在朱闻天现在的英语水平如同母语一般熟练，在其努力之下，这边旋律还没有记得多清楚呢，那边歌词已经记住了大半。
　　如此两个多小时之后，朱闻天开始查阅1984的一些大事件，特别是HK房地产、金融以及岛国&米国经济形势等，朱闻天着力留意了一下。
　　同时朱闻天也在考虑着可能应对的措施，准备玩一场资本的游戏，在接下来一两年的时间来一场豪赌。
　　也难怪系统会限制朱闻天这种豪赌的次数最多为3次了，上一次朱闻天仅仅是利用了美元的升值，短短一个月时间的货币期货做下来就赚了千万级别的财富。
　　如果没有系统限制的话，朱闻天完全什么也不去做，而仅仅是利用这种投机取巧的模式，获取大量的财富。
　　此时还剩下2次机会，朱闻天也已经打定了主意，前期财富的积累才是最为重要的，一旦有合适的机会，朱闻天便会把剩余的两次机会给使用上，而不会去等什么更好的机会。
　　搜索着国际国内的一些大事件，耳边还放着80年代的经典英文歌曲，不知不觉之间已是到了中午。
　　眼下百脉丹的效果时间还长，朱闻天根本不需要进食、进水，仍然在全力记忆那20多首英文歌曲，间歇性地不断停下来思索一些问题，同时手里还拿着笔不断地写写画画。
　　偶尔有些累了，朱闻天便试图联系了一下远在米国的陆瑶，不过对方的手机仍旧是关机的模式，如果不是知道陆瑶的父母大概还在陪着她，朱闻天都有些担心这妮子了。
　　随后朱闻天考虑着是不是联系一下D姐和她妈妈，问一下矿山那边的事情，想想之后便放弃了，自己虽然在场景体验和固定时空滞留了很长时间，但是在现实之中并不长。
　　看看手机，朱闻天发现除了一些微信群里有些消息之外，甚至自己的父母都没有打电话过来，索性便谁也没再联系了。
　　估计真要是打电话回家的话，说不得就会绕不开一些话题，而朱闻天正是由于一些事情才出来散心的。
　　如此，朱闻天再次投入到了记忆歌曲的大业之中，真的是“大业”无疑，这可都是真金白银，只要通过腾龙音乐发行出来收益就会源源不断而来。
　　后面朱闻天要在地产、金融、国际货币之中有所动作，某种程度上还要依靠这种吸金的渠道，于是朱闻天继续“奋战”强行记忆两个多小时之后，便选择再次登录了固定时空。
　　固定时空1984年1月8日，朱闻天登录固定时空SZ，第一时间寻找了蒋玉华、吴汉红，并由吴汉红联系了充当腾龙音乐顾问的两名音乐老师。
　　1984全年登录时间已经增加到了20天，朱闻天选择这一天登录，有几个方面的原因，包括为了保持最大记忆、为了赶春节推出磁带专辑、为了音乐老师不上班之类的。
　　1月8日是星期天，两名音乐老师分别来自于大学和中学，临近学期期末，她们肯定不会清闲，选取星期天登录的话就好说多了。
　　而经过商量之后，朱闻天让两名风尘仆仆赶来的音乐老师分成了两组，分别带了七八名巡回演唱会时招募回来的音乐专长人员，开始记录、整理歌曲。
　　朱闻天如此做，同样是为了最大限度的保持记忆，懂英文的大学老师跟吴汉红一起，负责朱闻天记忆的20多首英文经典歌曲的整理，另外一组则负责华夏经典歌曲的整理。
　　腾龙大厦第10层，在录音室旁边的两个房间内，朱闻天来回穿梭者，一首华夏歌曲穿插一首英文歌曲，分别唱给两个房间的整理组。
　　怎么说呢，第一次参加整理组的那些小伙伴们都惊呆了！

　　　　不得不说，锐意创新和老成持重这两种风格，在苹果公司这里冲突的太厉害了，甚至就连一贯最支持乔布斯的约翰.斯卡利，也抱着怀疑的态度。
　　广告片《1984》创意来源的小说《一九八四》，其作者George Orwell——乔治.奥威尔是英国著名作家、新闻记者和社会评论家。
　　由于早年的经历，使得乔治.奥威尔同情社会底层，他的文字也在始终关注底层社会的生活。
　　其两大传世之作《动物庄园》和《一九八四》，分别成书于1944年和1948年，堪称世界文坛反极权主义的政治讽刺小说经典，影响力已然超越了文学界。
　　小说《一九八四》里讲述了一个令人感到窒息和恐怖的，以追逐权力为最终目标的，假想的未来极权主义社会。由于该作品被视为危险和具有煽动性，故而被许多国家列为禁书。
　　乔治.奥威尔在其中创造的thoughtcrime——犯罪思想、newspeak——新语、Big Brother——老大哥、doublethink ——双重思想等词汇，都被收入进英语词典；而由他的名字衍生出来的“奥威尔主义”、“奥威尔式的”等新词，甚至成为日常通用语汇。
　　由此可见，乔治.奥威尔和他的作品，在英语国家的影响是如何巨大。
　　毫无疑问，乔布斯和Chiat/Day广告公司的三位创作人员，分别从小说《一九八四》里找到了自己想要的东西，相互产生共鸣，进而有了这则标新立异的广告，其预算空前地高达75万美元。
　　除了重金打造之外，乔布斯还对广告的导演精挑细选，最后找来了Ridley Scott——雷德利.斯科特。
　　此人在原本时空里的十几年后可谓大名鼎鼎，《Gladiator》——《角斗士》、《Black Hawk Down》——《黑鹰计划》、《American Gangster》——《美国黑_帮》、《Prometheus》——《普罗米修斯》，以及《The Martian》——《火星救援》等，都是他的作品。
　　现阶段，雷德利.斯科特的商业吸金能力，虽然远远比不上斯皮尔伯格，但表现也相当不俗了，其1979年导演的科幻恐怖片《Alien》——《异形》，拍摄预算只有1100万美元，但票房却超过了1亿美元。
　　由此，雷德利.斯科特得到了制片方的信任，随即成了《Blade Runner》——《银翼杀手》的导演，拍摄预算达到了2800万美元。
　　值得一提的是，在之前那一波香江电影进军好莱坞的热潮中，不光是邹文怀雄心勃勃，邵逸夫也同样出手了，《银翼杀手》的主要投资方里就有他。
　　但悲剧的是，1982年6月25日《银翼杀手》在1290家影院全面上映后，首周票房令人失望之极，仅有615万美元，直接被以《E.T.外星人》为首的其它科幻片碾压成渣，最后的总票房只有3300万美元。
　　可以说，邵逸夫和邹文怀此番对好莱坞的试探，都是铩羽而归，坑得不轻，毕竟这些美元折算成港元后，没准够香江这边拍一年电影的预算了，要不然赔得吐血的这两位，也不会对在好莱坞混得风生水起的唐焕，感觉莫测高深，进而百般妥协了。
　　《银翼杀手》虽然在票房上失利了，观众普遍不买账，但其深刻的内容却产生了巨大的影响，属于原本时空里网络时代被各种解读、捧上神坛的又一典型。
　　雷德利.斯科特导演的这部电影，所表现出来的反乌托邦色彩，和小说《一九八四》的内容有异曲同工之妙。
　　乔布斯正是看中了雷德利.斯科特的这一点，而雷德利.斯科特也没让乔布斯失望。
　　为了达到最好的效果，雷德利.斯科特特意找来了数十个真正的光头来拍摄，而女主角的扮演者则是一位女子铁饼运动员。
　　最终，耗资巨大的广告片《1984》，在伦敦完成了拍摄。
　　可它在苹果高层这里，得到了满满的恶评，以至于大多数人都认为，这是自己看过的最差的广告片
　　马库拉发了一会呆后，开口的第一句话就是，“有谁想另找一家广告公司？”
　　见此情景，首席执行官约翰.斯卡利越发地信心全无，随即便让Chiat/Day公司廉价卖掉已经买下的那两个超级碗上长度分别为60秒和30秒的广告时段，乔布斯为此愤怒不已。
　　现阶段，约翰.斯卡利和乔布斯的关系好得蜜里调油，他不想为了这件事，让双方的交情出现隔阂，于是做为一种妥协，约翰.斯卡利决定由负责营销的Bill Campbell——比尔•坎贝尔来考虑怎么做。
　　实际上，Chiat/Day公司并没有完全按照约翰.斯卡利的指示去做，他们进行了消极的反抗，即只把30秒的广告时段卖掉了，而那个时长60秒的广告时段，则压根没有去找买家，李•克劳给出的托词为“卖不掉”。
　　不明就里的比尔•坎贝尔，见这个60秒的广告时段砸在手里了，于是硬着头皮决定放手一搏，在超级碗上播放广告片《1984》。
　　各种和稀泥，最后让乔布斯乱中取胜，简直就是苹果公司当下最大的特色，马库拉也只能徒呼奈何。

　　唐焕想了想，最后答应了马库拉的邀请，正好顺便见一下那位公司政_治斗争失败的康懋达创始人杰克.特拉梅尔。
　　放下了电话，唐焕突然又记起来一件事，于是联系到了米哈依尔.科根，开口问道：“我记得，好像今年奥克兰突袭者进入了超级碗？”
　　“没错。”米哈依尔.科根得意地哈哈大笑，“继1981年夺得文斯.兰巴迪杯后，奥克兰突袭者今年又有希望赢得超级碗，对手是HSD红人，你要现场观战么？”
　　“在哪个球场举行？”唐焕兴致勃勃地询问，盖因这支奥克兰突袭者实在给他带来了不少惊喜，自从其被自己收购后，这已经是第二次在超级碗亮相了，俨然和旧金山49人成为旧金山湾区的双雄。
　　“坦帕球场，在佛罗里达州西海岸的Tampa——坦帕。”米哈依尔.科根特意补充了一下，“你那边是冬天吧，这边的气候可是非常怡人。”
　　“不特意过去了，太远了，要绕地球大半圈，我还是在旧金山看电视直播吧。”唐焕笑着推辞了。

　　1984年1月22日，美国国家橄榄球联盟1983赛季总决赛——第十八届超级碗，在坦帕的坦帕体育场举行，对阵双方为美联冠军奥克兰突袭者和国联冠军HSD红人，收视观众超过9600万人。
　　唐焕邀请杰克.特拉梅尔，一起观看了这场比赛。
　　第三节刚开始，占尽优势的奥克兰突袭者队便触底得分。
　　但是，电视并没有即时重播这一得分画面。相反，屏幕突然诡异地黑屏了两秒钟，接着转为金属灰色调的广告片画面，其所渲染的那种冷漠的工业环境背景，让人不由自主地联想到《银翼杀手》的反乌托邦氛围，看上去有点儿像科幻电影中的场景。
　　一支由光头组成的队伍，踩着令人毛骨悚然的音乐前进，“老大哥”则正在大屏幕上进行控制人心的讲话。
　　与此同时，一个穿着纯白色背心，上面印有一台麦金塔电脑，手里拎着锤子的年轻女子，在奥威尔式思想警察的追捕中奔跑着。
　　当这支队伍坐好，如痴如醉地聆听“老大哥”演讲的时候，这个女子跑到了大屏幕前。
　　随着“老大哥”宣布“我们必胜！”，女主角的锤子击碎了屏幕，一切在一阵光和烟雾中消失。
　　广告的结尾处，旁白平静地念道：“1月24日，苹果电脑公司将推出麦金塔电脑。你将明白，为什么1984不会变成《1984》。”
　　显而易见，按照乔布斯的比喻，广告片中的“老大哥”就是暗指统治计算机世界的IBM，苹果公司则类似女主角，是那个意图挫败“老大哥”世界的反抗者。
　　唐焕哈哈一笑，“估计这个花费75万美元的广告，把很多人都吓到了。”
　　“只要能够造成轰动效应，就是好广告。”杰克.特拉梅尔言简意赅、直指核心地评价道。
　　事实确实如此，苹果公司这则不走寻常路的广告，极大吸引了媒体的关注，甚至连奥克兰突袭者队以38：9的比分，战胜HSD红人队，夺得历史上第三个超级碗冠军的锋芒，也黯然失色了不少。
　　当天晚上，美国各大电视网和50个地方电视台，都播放了关于这则广告的新闻，从而产生了只有网络时代才有的病毒式营销效果。

　　1984年1月24日，MAC发布会与苹果年度股东大会同期举行，地点在可容纳2600人的迪安扎社区学院弗林特礼堂。
　　由于之前超级碗上广告造成的轰动效应，各路媒体蜂拥而至，加上苹果公司大发英雄帖所邀请的一众同行——包括唐焕、盖茨、米契尔.卡波尔等等在内，也前来捧场，顿时把弗林特礼堂挤得水泄不通。
　　今天乔布斯穿着一件蓝色双排扣西装外套，里面是一件笔挺的白衬衫，打着浅绿色领结。看的出来，他花了不少心思在装扮上面。
　　“这是我人生中最重要的时刻，”在后台等待活动开始的时候，乔布斯坦率地说道，“我真的很紧张。你可能是唯一知道我对这次发布会感受的人。”
　　约翰.斯卡利抓住乔布斯的手，握了片刻，最后低声说了一句“好运”。
　　在好基友的祝福下，乔布斯以苹果公司董事长的身份首先登台，宣布股东大会正式开始。

　　但随着他枯燥无味的讲话，观众们开始变得焦躁不安。毕竟，那些专程赶来的人，满怀期待的对象是MAC的发布，而非枯燥的财务数据。

　　“IBM一直想要占有一切，在过去的几十年里，它就已经统治了整个计算机世界。如今，IBM还想主宰和控制未来，进入了个人电脑领域。”
　　“不可否认，方圆电脑突破了IBM的垄断，让中小型企业乃至一些专业人士，受益于微型计算机技术所带来的便利。”
　　“但这还不够，MAC将会把这场变革进行得更彻底，让个人电脑进入到每一个家庭，使每个人都能通过技术，发掘自己的潜力。”
