The mild-mannered man rubbed his sore, red face.

His lips and face were swollen like a pigs lips. Pink, red and throbbing painfully.

He was angry enough to die, to lay his life on the line and try to tear apart the young girl into a thousand pieces!...

...At least he would, if he had the strength.

'Curse you Sam!!! I'll show you who's boss once my mission is over... And my powers are unsealed! I'll make you regret ever crossing paths with the great me...!!! Muahahaha!!!' He thought to himself while meekly keeping his head low, not daring to let out even a peep about his grievances, lest he be *bopped* on the head again.

They had confronted the smiling, happy girl over the violence she had subjected them to. The blustering man and the yowling cat had sprayed their saliva in Sam's face to give her a piece of their mind. Then the smiling, happy girl had told them how much she missed her, then hit them both on their heads leaving sore, rising bumps - one each for the man and cat alike.

He and Snowie were rubbing their heads in pain, muttering to one another in demon-speak and cat-speak, united by their common foe just like in the saying: Having Sam as your enemy makes for strange bedfellows.[1]

Sam was standing quietly in front of the projection screen, digesting and relishing the sense of accomplishment she felt. Her body was by now free from injuries; self-healed during the long duration of her endless fall. Relief gushed over her, washing away her feeling of cold sweat that had burst out from every pore, and the sense of fear that felt like a circlet of thorns constricting the crown of her head.

She rejoiced in the taste of achievement, savoring every moment. She had done it! It was not a dream! It had truly come to pass! Her wish and heart's cry was heard at her darkest moment.

She had saved her first kiss.

Though she wasn't sure who it was for yet.

'Maybe Reeves... If he isn't too weak... But yeah, he's just really weak... Except for that *ZOOM SWISH BOOM POW!!* move that he did I guess? When I went "urgh!" and he made me fly away!'

Then she heard a peculiar sound from the projection screen before the altar.

She saw something even more odd. A symbol she could recognise easily anywhere, but one that somehow triggered great resentment and a heating up of her whole body in rage. A feeling like she wanted to smash everything around her and pull the plugs, then call up the Internet Service Provider and give them a-- Wait, what was she talking about again...?[2]

It was the image of a spinning clock on the display, like a circle going round and round without going anywhere. Somehow she felt so irritated looking at it that she punched the screen - but her hand just passed through, like grasping at the wind.[2]

After a long while of waiting and listening to her stomach grumbling (Albert and Snowie wisely hid behind some statues, making themselves scarce lest the girl look for them to "play" and let off her steam), finally she heard a "Ding!" sound.

"Congratulations! Challenges completed! Successor candidate, here are your results for the first phase of the inheritance trials!"

"Challenge 1: Trial of Perseverence - 100% score!"

"Challenge 2: Trial of Strength - 100% score!"

"Challenge 3: Trial of Wisdom - 192% score!"

"Overall results for Phase 1 of the inheritance trial (Difficulty MAX Level 10) - 392% out of 300% - *ERROR* score has been achieved! Result: Phase 1 of the inheritance trials has been completed! Apologies for the delay, as the completion method was outside of the fixed parameters. Beep."

"Huh?!? What cheat did you pull!!! There's no way these are Sam's results!!! What kind of death trap or sly trick are you planning, you dastardly Beep voice!??"

"Miao-yow yow yow yelp! Hsss! miao!!! Myuu, meow!"

Perseverence he understood. That bloody girl had no issue bugging him for 1 minute, 1 hour or 1 day if she didn't get what she wanted, even if it were just a pat on the head! Strength... Ahem, no comment. But wisdom!?!?!??!?

Rowllool meowie-ow wow! Reow, hss, prrr, meow!?????

"No!!! Beep. The results are real!!! Beep. Here's the recordings..."

[23 minutes later]

A slack-jawed man and cat stood shell-shocked, mouths unable to close.

"How the hell did you pass that last trial, you cheat!!!"

"Miao (Scolding in cat language)!!!"

They stood in the same incredulous pose, pointing a finger at Sam in furious questioning.

"Heheh! Lucky~!" She tried to act cute, which was pretty good, given that she was 151cm tall -- "Huh???"

Albert and the cat patted the girl all over, searching and sniffing (only the safe parts) of her body then asked.

"Where'd the rest of you go??/ Meowowoow??!"

She smiled, tilting her head in a cute way that finally suited her, then explained with an understanding and confident voice. "I don't know!"

"..." Albert face-palmed himself then shared a knowing look with Snowie, as if ridiculing himself for even asking.

'Whatever, nevermind. I should've learned by now never to care or rely on logic when it comes to this girl. What was I even thinking? Hah, haha... Hahahaha! Logic... Sam... Hahahah-oof!!'

"Hehe... You were laughing so much that I felt it would be funny if I punched you in the face while you were laughing... Hehe...!"

Albert's face turned red, not from the punch but from anger.

'Just you wait... I'll get you yet... You little--oof!!'

"Hehe... You were frowning so much that I felt it would be funny if I punched you..."

A cat looked on in pity at her friend, shaking her head in sadness (while hiding behind a statue so that the violent girl wouldn't lay eyes on her). Snowie sighed and shook her head, looking like an old woman - then all the hairs on her furry white body stood on end as a demonic predator laid eyes on her.

Eyes that said, "Hehe, I felt it would be funny if I XXXX'd you..."

Snowie fled with a now-suddenly small-sized 10 year old girl in hot pursuit, while the female voice which went "Beep." waited for her audience to pay attention to her so she could continue.

[Later in the morning, about 11 minute before lunch]

"Oh, so what's the inheritance?"

"The knowledge and 100,000 years more advanced technology of the Assi Oddity race of the Assi Oddity planet shall be your grand inheritance! This knowledge brings with it sufficient power to establish a dynasty that spans a trillion planets, and quadrillion light years of territory! In fact, even 82,974 years prior to these discoveries, the Assi Oddity race had already conquered far and wide with their vastly superior technology, proving that..."

As the voice droned on an on with her occasional "Beep."s, it was Sam's turn to stand slack-jawed and dozing off, drool dripping down onto Snowie's head - the cat was caught in Sam's bosom, hugged like a boster.

Albert buried his face in his hands, weeping. Not with joy, but with sorrow, grief and a acute sense of loss as the inheritance being given to Sam was like pearls thrown to pigs...

What would she do with knowledge anyway? Eat it? Throw it at her enemies? Punch someone with it...?

Or more likely, forget it completely? Like that story she told him about the letter that she forgot... The letter that was supposed to be her reason for going to Rome and her only ticket to enter the prestigious Rome School of Arts...

[A short while later]

"...the war of the Second Centauri quadrant in 199,281 resulted in the eventual replacement of the Boson fragmenter with a new generation of cutting-edge weaponry, led by Sage Professor Mi-Jae who eventually rose to prominence as the--"

Finally unable to stand it anymore, Sam cut off the female voice, asking a simple question.

"I'm hungry. When's dinner...?"

It was already night-time.

The winner of my prompt was a book that is now on hiatus. No other entries qualified. At the time I didn't realize that having votes was the rank qualifier. So my book was instantly disqualified.
Despite not making it past the car park, so to speak, I kept this story going. I had moved it to Wattpad and continued to post chapters there.
I entered it into a Wattpad community award, and had eventually won the award for Historical Fiction, but never received the prize for it. 😆
That's okay. Knowing that my writing was enough to be a winner in a judge's eyes was cool. It won over some quality stories as well. That was a prize enough for me.
After some time, I started posting the story to Tapread where it picked up read interest there. Then I got a ping from Islinda who liked the lone chapter I had left on the book page.  
This story has been a blast to write. I'm proud of what I've been able to achieve with it. I have no regrets of what I leave behind, as I have given my best shot.

At a depth of nine kilometers underneath the ninety-ninth kilometer mark along the Profound River Elizabeth's calm meditative state jolted awake. Only the soft glow of her crimson eyes remained where she sat before fading as her body seemingly teleported straight to the top of the river.

Elizabeth seemed almost possessed as her movemenents carried her along the final kilometer to the Waterfall of Insight. To unassuming eye, she appeared to be dancing as she utilized her Seamless Water Steps. For the length of the remaining kilometers, the water around her could do nothing to drive her away.

"Damn it," Elizabeth grumbled, incredibly frustrated with her current situation.

She had achieved her goal of crossing the Profound River and there was even a fourth fragment of the Water Tablet of Flow at the base of the Waterfall of Insight for her. Yet only a couple minutes were left on the clock before the Water Substation Trial would force her out.

She did everything in her power, even going so far as ignoring the Status notifications that had been piling up since she reached the ninety-kilometer mark, to get this far. To get any form of benefit, she had to ignore the waterfall and meditate on the river's surface until the last second.

"Are you alright?" Yrre said, "I was going to congratulate you, seeing as how you did well enough to gain an additional thirty-six hours, but you were spaced out and unresponsive."

"I was just reviewing all the gains I got from this trip," Elizabeth said, drawing Yrre's attention to the table in the center of the round room.

She added, "Look, I got quite a decent amount of tickets. We should go over to the Exchange Hub to trade in for some rewards."

"Righ—" Yrre froze in her spot as she appraised the tickets.

'A Twinkling Comet Gold Ticket and fifty Yellow Tickets?' She thought, 'How is that even possible? She doesn't have a Cultivation Method?!'

As a follower of the Castle Lord, she understood the hierarchy of the ticket currency system. Unmarked Tickets were passed down to Mortal Realm Practitioners who challenged the Substations on the Castle's first floor, while Tickets marked with the signature of a Twinkling Comet were passed down to those building their Foundation.

She speculated, 'Did she really score that high on the test of Understanding Water? For a Substation that she started practicing less than half a month ago?'

"Say," Yrre asked as they walked out of the round room to the Exchange Hub, unable to contain her curiosity, "Can you show me your Water True Qi signature? I want to see how much you improved."

Smirking, Elizabeth complied with Yrre's wishes. She produced a small streak of Water True Qi so vivid, it all but looked like real water.

Elizabeth teased, "Pretty cool, right?"

"R-right…" Yrre could only shake her head at the absurd talent her master possessed.

Walking into the Exchange Hub, the white room from the outside looking in transformed into a lively bar. Lively with regards to its atmosphere anyway, as only Elizabeth and Yrre were there to accompany the sole bartender.

Elizabeth walked with Yrre over to a barstool and greeted the energy construct consigned to its position for all eternity.

"Scion," she gave him a nod.

"Oh? You're back already?" The golden naked man replied.

Elizabeth nodded before asking, "Do you actually serve drinks here or is this room just built this way for aesthetics?"

"I was created with the contribution of thousands of Spiritual Cooks across dozens of Planes and hundreds of Dimensions. However, since you're still building up your Foundation and challenging the second floor of the Castle, only Mortal Grade drinks can be served free of charge."

"That works for me," Elizabeth shrugged her shoulders as she ordered, "Can I get an Iced Green Tea. I also want to trade in some tickets I've earned."

"Right away," Scion said as he went to prepare Elizabeth's drink.

Quietly, Elizabeth nodded in appreciation as she watched Scion both bring out quality ingredients that she approved of and used top-tier tea making skills to make the most out of the ingredients. Though to Yrre, it looked like Elizabeth was appreciating Scion's naked form as she stared at him with ambiguous approval.

When the tea was served, Scion asked, "So, what would you like to trade for at this point in time?"

"I'm assuming you have an updated Jade Slip for me, right?"

With a nod, Scion passed Elizabeth a Jade Slip.

After accepting the Jade Slip, Elizabeth scanned through its contents as she sipped her tea. Even with her Aberrant Spiritual Sea, it took several seconds to go through and sort out the hundreds of thousands of options she now had access to.

Near the end of the process, however, Elizabeth stopped. With uncontainable excitement, she asked, "This… Can I really trade in seventy-five Yellow Tickets for another shot at the Water Substation?"

"You can," Scion calmly explained, "The Castle Lord created this Legacy Site knowing fully well how valuable the Substation Trials would be for the challengers. He understood that some Cultivators, like you, would much rather appreciate his Trials than accept the materialistic rewards usually traded for with the colored tickets."

"However," Scion added a disclaimer, "Be warned that the second attempt of any Substation will only yield rewards relative to your first attempt. If you hardly progress, you'll have mostly wasted your time, and if for whatever reason you happened to not even reach the potential of your first attempt, you may even receive a punishment from the Legacy Site itself."

"Heh," Elizabeth chuckled as she schemed mentally.

She said, "I guess, I'll return to get a second chance for the Water Substation after visiting the Meditation Chamber.

"See you then," she added as she stood up in preparation to leave the Exchange Hub.

"About the Meditation Chamber," Scion's words stopped Elizabeth from leaving as he said, "Now that you're on the second floor, the quality of the Energies in the Meditation Chamber has increased, as has the time-to-cost ratio and time distortion rates. Be mindful that all the Chambers will continue to improve in quality the further up the Castle floors you reach."

"Thanks for the heads-up," Elizabeth said, continuing to walk out the room with Yrre.

On their way to the Meditation Chamber, Elizabeth asked Yrre, "Are you going to follow me into the Meditation Chamber?"

"I won't be of much help to you there. Though, if you ever decide to pick up Alchemy in the Practice Chamber or want to go a few rounds in the Challenge Chamber, I'll be more than happy to accompany you," Yrre said.

"Maybe later… The Challenge Chamber, not Alchemy," Elizabeth said, with cold sweat dripping down her forehead. Cultivation was becoming more complex and time-consuming by the Stage and she already couldn't practice most of the Secondary Occupations she had learned. Learning a new Secondary Occupation in Alchemy was simply not feasible.

"Suit yourself," Yrre said, sounding somewhat annoyed.

She added, "Though, I have to ask what it is that you're planning. It seems to me that you really want to go back into the Water Substation, but you didn't even buy a Cultivation Method."

"Don't worry about that," Elizabeth couldn't suppress the smug expression that possessed her visage. "By reaching my current level of Understanding of Water, my Goldfinger Functions rewarded me with a Water Cultivation Method."

"If you say so," Yrre said, stopping before the entrance to the Meditation Chamber. She only had a basic understanding of Elizabeth's Goldfinger, but every Goldfinger was a reality-breaking ability and with Elizabeth's past history, she believed Elizabeth had every right to her trust.

Elizabeth said, "Anyways, if you're only going to be following me into the Practice and Challenge Chambers, I'll call you when that time comes."

Yrre and Elizabeth exchanged nods before going their separate ways, Elizabeth to the Meditation Chamber and Yrre to the round room.

Elizabeth, upon crossing into the Meditation Chamber watched as a plain altar was created in the center of the Castle's signature white rooms. She saw no other development and thus went over to investigate the altar.

All the important monsters and Five were gathered in the meeting room, watching the absorption process of the Core of Madness. It was the first thing they did when the monsters returned; Five was impatient to see his rewards, but he was bound to be disappointed.

Five looked at the list of monsters unlocked and internally sighed. 'No high-level monsters and only the Ember Spirits are societal monsters. There's no Boss Monster either. I suppose I cannot always be lucky.' 

He was hoping to obtain the powerful monsters of the Fire Pit, like the Flame Commander. While he did obtain many monsters that could be implemented in the volcanic biome, none of them were stronger than the Flame Scarab Warrior. It was depressing to think that the volcanic biome would be ruled by a monster coming from a dungeon specializing in insects rather than the monsters coming for a dungeon specializing in Fire Attribute Monsters.

'At least I've got the Flame Belle and the Flame Sisters. They are the equivalent of Harriet and the harpies but are of Fire attribute.' As the thought crossed his mind, Five glanced at the Flame Belle.

Without a word, he opened his dungeon interface and purchased a Renaming Table. When used, they could rename a character. Five had already noticed the name of the Flame Belle. He did not know how she ended up with this name but he could not allow one of his monsters to be called like that.

"Change your name," flatly said Five.

The Flame Belle's lit up. She hurriedly grabbed the Renaming Table and then froze. She hesitantly asked, "What should I call myself?"

"Can't you pick a name yourself?" asked Five.

"No. It is customary for the dungeon master to name their monsters. I held several names during my life; it changed every time I was summoned to a new dungeon," answered the Flame Belle with a pleading expression.

"Alright. Then, your name shall be Ignis. It means Fire! I hope that you live up to your new name."

"Thank you." The Flame Belle silently retreated. She knew she had already disturbed the meeting enough. She would use the Renamine Table later to avoid wasting more time.

Five nodded approvingly and looked at the system prompts again. Things were different this time; he obtained 300 thousand DP for conquering the dungeon. 100 thousand more than he did last time. 

The dungeon core glowed after its meal but soon returned to its usual dull appearance. Nothing happened, it did not upgrade, nor did it provide additional functions. Five had been hoping for something to happen. The stronger its core became, the stronger the dungeon would be.

'It seems that it is just like for everyone else; it will progressively become harder to upgrade the dungeon core. I will need to absorb more dungeon cores...' thought Five.

Not letting this worsen his mood, Five turned his attention to the most interesting part of his loot. This time, he managed to plunder four artifacts from the dungeon master. He took them one after another, starting with the Heart of Fire.

Active effect: Increases all the stats of Fire Attribute Monsters by 3
Passive effect: Increases the reproduction rate of Fire Attribute Monsters by 9%

Conditions for Upgrade: Having 20 floors controlled by Fire Attribute Monsters, Unlocking 60 species of Fire Attribute Monsters.

Cost of Upgrade: 10 million DP

Five looked at interest at the Heart of Fire. It was a rather common item; even he could purchase it with the dungeon shop but the conditions to obtain it were harsh. It could cost him 100 thousand DP to obtain one at Grade 1 and the conditions were to have ten floors controlled by Fire Attribute Monsters with thirty species of Fire Attribute Monsters unlocked.

In fact, there was a similar item for each attribute but he could not even purchase one yet. Even the Heart of Darkness was out of reach. The Nosferatu's floor was the ninth floor with the tenth floor being the crafting department and Tinyland. He still needed to have two more floors dedicated to the Darkness Attribute monsters since the first floor did not count because it did not house any monsters.

Five was impressed that a dungeon had already managed to unlock such an item but again, he expected no less from it since it specialized in only one attribute. The effects of the Heart of Fire were also quite impressive; when active, it would increase the monsters' stats by fifteen.

The Heart of Fire went to Ishan who would take care of it. The artifact would be placed at the highest floor of the Volcanic Biome. 

The second artifact was the Flames of Destruction:

When used for forging, increases the chances of success by 10% and have a 10% chance of adding additional effects to weapons in exchange for a decrease in maximum durability of 10%

When used for alchemy, lowers the chances of success by 10% but increases the potency of the products by 20%

When used for cooking, lowers the chances of success by 10% but have a 10% chance of adding additional effects to the dish. The dish might even become poisonous.

'A crafting artifact? And it can be used for different professions,' thought Five. He paused for a moment before nodding to the Elder Dwarf. The dwarves would make the best use out of the artifact.

The third artifact was the Molten Embryo

Activate at any time to stop the Embryo's development and trigger its growth. The Embryo will turn into a random Fire Attribute Monster. The monster's strength will be proportional to the days of development the embryo had.

Days of development: 32 days
Note: The maximum days of development is 365 days

'Interesting. The longer I let it be, the better the results would be. I guess I will just throw it in my inventory and wait...' Five sent the Molten Embryo back in his inventory. It would not have an impact on the dungeon until much later into the game. Unless he was in danger, Five did not want to lose the opportunity to obtain a powerful monster.

Finally, the Puzzle Box was the last artifact.

'Another peculiar artifact,' thought Five. The Puzzle Box looked clean and polished; it did not seem very intimidating but Five knew how treacherous these puzzles could be. People could spend years without successfully opening one; most of the time, opening one would be all due to luck.

"Dreidus. Have you heard of the Tomb of Kanzanlak?" asked Five. Dreidus was an ex-member of Necro Valley. He might have heard of it which would make it easier for Five to estimate the value of the artifact.

"Never. However, I do believe that I heard of Kanzanlak. I think it is a town somewhere in the desert of the Domogo Empire," answered Dreidus after thinking for a moment.

'Hmmm, that does not help me at all.'

Five sent back the Puzzle Box in his inventory. He would give it a try later or ask the other monsters if they were interested in attempting to solve it. For now, the monsters all deserved some rest!

"Let's call it a day. You all worked well. I think you all need some time to recover. Ishan and Dreidus should arrange a floor for Ignis and the Flame Sisters. Harriet and Angela, go and make sure the Mongolla Gazelle has a place to sleep. We won't have any activities for now."

The monsters were delighted but Harriet asked, "Five, will it not be better for us to attack another entity. The more Destruction Points you have the better. There are still a few days before the end of the trial. We can push a little harder."

Five glanced at the harpy queen but shook his head. "Not for now. We can talk about it tomorrow. We cannot attack any random tribe. The situation with the Vicious Rhino Tribe was special. If we target any tribe, we might cause another conflict between them. We don't want another alliance to appear and target the Musclewood Tribe."

"Trust me and just rest. We have more than seven million DP now. Everything is going well, nothing can target us. Even if our reward for the trial is mediocre, we have cleared the region of all competitors."

Harriet paused for a moment with a thoughtful expression and eventually nodded. The monsters were relieved. They left the meeting room one after the other.

Five smiled. Everything was going well but he never expected the situation to change so suddenly. As Five was about to leave the meeting room, a series of system prompts sounded:

[System prompt: You have been selected as the target of the Challenger Gauntlet.]

[System prompt: The player, Farsight has officially challenged you to a duel]

[System prompt: You do not have any items that can counter the Challenger Gauntlet, the challenge has been automatically accepted.]

[System prompt: All the functions of the dungeon core will be temporarily locked. All the entities not belonging to the dungeon will be teleported to the entrance. All entities connected to the dungeon will be teleported back to the dungeon and will have their HP/MP/Durability fully restored.]

[System prompt: Prepare for teleportation, all entities connected to the dungeon will be teleported to a separate realm in one minute.]

Five froze. 'Did I speak too soon?'

After being betrayed, framed and kicked down to the ground, our protagonist was sentenced to life imprisonment. But a few days later, a global disaster occurred, people from all nations migrated to underground refuges.

As a prisoner, he thought his life was over, abandoned by everyone. However, he wakes up, greeted by Gaia, the person responsible for New Earth.

Hey, guys.  I have some unpleasant news to discuss.

I first created this novel to enter a biweekly writing prompts contest hosted by Webnovel.  Starting three days late,  I felt that I didn't have time to create a proper outline for the novel so I hopped right in.  This has resulted in a myriad of problems popping up with regards to story progression and the overall quality of the book.

Now that I have a bit of time since the contest is over. I want to work on a few things before the novel gets too far along.  I'll mainly be outlining arcs, villains, power progression, character development, and reworking previous chapters so that they're grammatically better and easier to read.

I can not stress this next point enough.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT THIS NOVEL WILL BE DROPPED. 

It's just that I'll be taking a break from this story to work on a few other projects that I've thought up.

I have seen that there is a new writing prompts contest about werewolves. My book is aligned with the theme, I am thinking if I should join or not. However if I will join the contest I will have to delete this current book  and create a new one. Since I have 50 readers in this book  I want to ask your opinion about this. "Oh I guess I'll stop then," Mu said resting his tongue back into it's wet lair called the mouth.

"Flexing my tongue it's sore," Mu said while pulsating his tongue from stiff to soft.

"Is the tongue a muscle," Mu asked the voice.

In another part of the universe another Mu was sitting down beside a fire with a monocle in his eye.

"Hahaha I'm not Mu, Author I am simply a forgotten segment or some shit being used here to talk about something." The Not Mu said.

The Not Mu got a book from a shelf and looked directly at the Author watching him.

"It has come to my attention that a certain website on which our book is published has made a new writing prompt competition." The Not Mu said while opening the book he got out.

"It is titled "Writing Prompts Contest 116: Male Lead - Entertainer in Another World", now this in itself is not the coolest part. The best part is in the ideas section where it says,"1) A former world-class singer wakes up in a world filled with fantastical beings and magic. They soon find out that their voice and songs are magical in nature in this new world where bards exist. How will they make use of this? How will this world respond to their power?"Not Mu said and after he was done he closed up the book and looked right at the readers.

"Now I don't know if you've read the story up to this point but I mean...come on. I'm not mad website on which this story is published in fact I just want to know who on your staff likes my story because that is badass." Not Mu said. 

"I don't know if this is normal or not but it's definitely cool," Not Mu stood up and ripped off his mask revealing himself to be the Author.

"I didn't want to make myself a body in this world because I didn't want Mu to be able to meet me, but I had to come down and say thank you I have had this story bumping around in my head for years and I just had to write it I didn't expect 10,000 people to find this concept as interesting as me." I wiped a tear away from my eye and said," This may not sound like a lot to some people but that's more people then I have in my city (I think). So thank you." Author signing out.
