Some animes can be for kids but "Mostly" they see for teenagers and adults. Cartoons originated from the U.S. So when you call animes as cartoons your comparing it to tom and Jerry or Scooby doo bee do etc (I don't remember the name but should be like that) Just search up cartoon and anime and read up their individual wiki definitions and you'll understand what I'm saying.
