I started off at a 2 year college paying around 2200 a semester, then transferred to a university once I was finished with my associates degree. Also commuting helped me instead of living on campus.
a lot of it was exposure. the Internet was new and social media didn't exist. The kids played outside and you trusted your neighbors. We heard of kidnapping, or the occasional shooting, but that wasn't happening in our neighborhood so it's all ok.
I recently read a theory where Dumbledore is a Ron who traveled back in time and changed his name. They pointed out a few different reasons like his love for sweets or him always knowing what happened to Harry (because he already experienced it) and a few others... it was interesting to say the least.
