In the living room of the house, I was surrounded by my mother, grandmother, and sister, as we had a candle on a simple small cupcake my mother baked for the occasion.

""Happy Birthday to you!... Happy Birthday dear Railo..."" They all sang for me, as they surrounded me like some sort of ritual, which in a way, I guess a birthday ceremony is, then again maybe it's best to associate this moment with better things.

'A part of me wonders if this is just a distasteful joke, but at this point, it's hard to tell.' I could help but comment looking at the absurd requirements for quest #1, though the rest aren't too much better anyway.

'Of course, it is... Anyway, l guess this answers my questions.' I sighed at the new piece of information as it both introduced me to the paths I need to follow to escape this hellscape, no matter what...

'I'll get me and my family off this!' As I reaffirmed my goal, I clenched my fist and as I blew out the candle, I could see my sister smiling wide, my mother happy crying, and my grandma warmly smiling.

Yeah... I can't stop... No, I won't stop until we're out.

"Smile! You're always overly serious at random moments!" Lera mean-mugged me with clear dissatisfaction in her eyes as she crossed her arms snorting.

"It's just how my face looks... I'm happy you, know?" I respond forcing a smile in.

"... She has a point if you're so mean-faced you can't even pull out a smile at any moment, that just means you don't smile enough." Mother supported Lera seeing me struggle to smile properly.

"Don't mind them too much, they're just playing around. But honestly, why so serious? Afraid your face might crack?" Grandma smiled at me.

"Pfff.... I refuse to laugh at that, but I'll give it to ya." I couldn't help but smile wide at the moment.

"See, there you go! You look like a whole new person with that smile on your face!" Lera exclaimed.

"Well, I guess I can't argue with that. My face might crack, but at least I'll go out with a smile!" I joked, earning a chuckle from my family.

And with that, I once again made a vow to myself and my family: we were getting out of this hellscape, no matter what. Even if it meant cracking a few smiles along the way.

The morning came and it was a new day.

As I was getting ready to run as part of my training, my mom pulled me in and we went into the kitchen.

"What's going on mum?" I asked seeing he hurried.

"Sorry, I just didn't want to stay outside any longer." She replied.

"Why?" I questioned.

"... I guess you're old enough now... Do you remember our neighbors from before?" She inquired.

"Yeah, they got taken away for lying all the way back, like 8 months ago or something like that," I said.

"Yes... They just got brought back, and apparently got tortured for most of the time, but then they found out that they weren't lying and the family only had one child Instead of the two being mentioned in the registration book, so all that happened to them... For a small mistake, and now they are back to having to work or die by the end of the month like us... No apologies or compensation.

"So, remember it my son, these people are monsters, and they don't care about us... So, promise me, you'll stay out of trouble no matter what, ok?" She looked at me serious.

"Hum... I..." I hesitated.

"Promise me?!?!" She grabbed me by the shoulders tightly and her face was imposing but the tears coming out of her eyes told me everything I needed to know.

"I promise... I'll stay out of trouble..." I found myself unable to refuse.

"I'm sorry, but I had to make sure you understand. I just want you and all of us to be safe." She then hugged me even tighter as she apologized and caressed my hair.
