Time For A Remodel

After looking over the floor plan, me and Ray decided to go talk to the other 2 residents and see what they thought we should do. Would we have everyone move upstairs, and have downstairs be the utility section?

We decided to start with the lower floor occupant. We made our way down, armed just in case, and knocked in the door. A lady answered, but didn't open the door.

"Who is it?" She asked

"I'm Ray, I live here and I'm trying to see who all is left here after the... Incident"

The door slowly creaked open.

"Are you armed?" She asked

Ray raised his hands in the air and said "yes, but I mean you no harm. Like I said I'm just checking in, but I do have a question."

"What is it?"

"So a friend of mine remodeled the top floor of this place a bit to be safer, and I was wondering if you'd like to take an upstairs room."

"Sure, you lead the way"

As she walked out the door, she saw me out of the corner of her eye and jumped. I quickly held my hands in the air to show I wasn't going to hurt her.

"If I had a pistol I would have shot you as a reaction."

"I wouldn't blame you, for all you know I was gonna jump you when you turned your back"

"That's the friend I just mentioned" Ray chimed in

"Uh, Alan" I said as I outstretched one of my hands

"Allison" she said as she shook my hand

"Come on slow pokes" Ray said while gesturing us to hurry up

We went up the stairs and made our way to the last occupant's room. We got into position with Allison around the opposite corner to me. Ray knocked on the door, but no answer.

He knocked again, but still no answer.

He knocked a third time, but still no answer.

"I guess she's not home" Ray said before turning around to walk away.

As soon as Ray turned around the door flung open and shots were fired at Ray who was pulled off to the side by Allison. I immediately rounded the corner and took my shot.

I shot her in the throat, and she stumbled backwards. I then shot her in the head to make sure she didn't suffer too much before she died.

I then stood there for a bit, walked back to my room, and sat down not saying a word.

"You okay man" Ray asked

The only words I managed to choke out were "I... I just... I just killed someone... They're dead... Because of me..."

"You did what you felt was necessary, and in the process saved my ass twice now. You both saved me this time." He turned towards Allison and smiled and looked back at me "I guess I owe you 2 favors and her one huh?"

"I guess so... " I said trying not to break down in front of people

Ray handed me another water which soothed my throat when I drank it.

"Want me to take care of this body too?" Ray asked

"Wait, you've killed multiple people now" Allison asked concerned

"No, first death was from the wolf-bats, second was suicide, third was this one." Ray corrected

Ray then walked out of the room and made his way towards the newly vacated room.

"So, did you do all of this or did he help?" Allison asked, looking at the homemade double room, outfitted with a security system, reloaders, guns, the whole nine yards.

"I collected and got all of this set up before the invasion happened. Now that i'm thinking about it, the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is probably close to being out of charge, I should probably get the generators set up.

As I stood up ready to get the generators set up, Ray dragged the body past my open door. I froze for a moment watching him drag her, then grabbed one of the generators and made my way out. Before I got out the door I grabbed a hammer and a box of nails and asked Allison to grab the sound proofing. We squeezed through the fence hole, where the generator barely fit through.

We made our way to the management office, and into the boiler room. We nailed the sound proofing taking turns after we hammered our fingers too many times. After we got that set up I wheeled the generator into the boiler room and ran the output cable under the door before hooking it up to the breaker box. Luckily the box had an input cable adapter built in.

We shut off every breaker except the ones to the rooms we needed power to, and as we got all this set up Ray appeared in the doorway with a gas can. Apparently we forgot to grab one, but at least Ray realized and brought one.

We topped off the generator, and started it up. It was surprisingly quiet once you closed the boiler room door, and especially once you closed the management office building.

We locked up the office and headed upstairs to the 2 rooms with power, both being my conjoined rooms. We then talked about how we were gonna arrange the living conditions.

"Before we move all of our stuff up here, we should set up the water filters to catch the rain." I suggested "Actually, never mind, we need to have a small water tank first that isn't the boiler. Scratch that, I'll just grab one when I go out to grab a dog whistle."

"You're honestly thinking about going out with the world like this?" Allison asked

"I said after we were done didn't I?"

"Yeah, but still are you nuts?"

"You could say that" I responded with a smirk

"It's official, you're actually insane. Either way though, let's get back to getting our living conditions set up." Allison concluded

We spent the next hour or so getting all of Allison's and Ray's stuff moved into their respective rooms. Allison took the room all the way to the end of the balcony hallway. Her logic was the further she was from the stairs the safer she was. I then suggested going one room less just so if the wall gets broken down on that end you'll still be safe because of the buffer the room causes.

Ray took the room that the guy that committed suicide lived in because "With the sendoff I gave him, his ghost simply couldn't be mad at me if it wanted to"

After we all got fully moved in we sat on the balcony using my scoped guns to look for creatures I hadn't documented yet. We probably spent 3 - 4 hours scouting out the area to no avail. We didn't see a single new creature the entire time. We saw zombies, people, and the occasional wolf bat pack, but other than that nothing was new.

We decided to set our alarms to go off early in the morning, and turned in for the night. I struggled to sleep though, I kept waking up from dreams about killing that girl. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for killing her, but at least I saved Ray in doing so. Feeling slightly better at that thought I fell asleep, and ended up not having another nightmare about that girl for the rest of the night.
