Wolf's Zone

A young girl, Letty Black, understands that the last thing she remembers is her father's death. Her childhood, teen years, first kiss, and first love are a tabula rasa. Her memories are gone, and no matter what she did and how many qualified doctors she had seen, there's no progress in getting her memories back except for strange dreams: an unknown city, a handsome blond man with magnificent blue-brown eyes, and... wolves...? What do all those dreams mean? Is she mad, or that's a hidden world under her nose?

A mystery

"Of course, take a seat. Sally, right? The librarian?" I arched an eyebrow, then put my purse to the other side, giving her a space to seat. She sat near me, then smiled.

"Sally, right. However, I'm not a librarian. I'm a dentist, and sometimes I help my mom in the library when I have free from teeth time," she shrugged, then smiled, "Recently I'm mostly in the library, so people started to call me the librarian… Sorry for confusing you."

"No need to say sorry, I understood everything you've said," I smiled at her, then closed the book, "I don't know how are you as a dentist, but as a librarian, you're the best one. Those books you've given me helped me better than those I chose."

"Happy to help. Got some answers to your questions about werewolves?" She smiled, then pointed to the building behind us, "Do you want to go to the Café? Here they serve a good coffee and have a good pastry! My friend is working here as well."

"Yeah, why not. I have a lot of time before I need to get back to service for my car," we both stood up, gathered my belongings, and went along the street to the next one.

"Something wrong with your car?" She worried, leading me to the Café.

"Actually nothing wrong. It's just a long way from Dallas to Zolf, and I never drove for such long distances, so I needed to be sure my car is okay. I don't want to have the car incident my father had. However, I really doubt he died in the car crash…," I looked at Sally having a weird facial expression. But in a second, she smiled at me and pointed to the building with a frontside full of tanned, big windows. There were a lot of tables with umbrellas on the front, meaning we reached the Café she was talking about. We got inside and went to the shopfront.

"What do you want to order, Letty?" Sally gave me the menu. I looked over it, seeing a lot of different pastries and many types of coffee, they are providing.

"A cup of Cappuccino please, and a cheesecake. I always dreamt to try it," I ordered, then gave the menu to Sally. She put it back to the shopfront, then rang a bell. A seller came to us, and it appeared to be a small, thin girl. She had long silk black hair, chestnut eyes color, a diamond-shaped face, and an hourglass body shape. She was dressed in a V-neck gray blouse, black jeans, and an apron with a Café logo. Her hair was taken into a ponytail to prevent it from falling into food and drinks. I did the same at the nightclub, as Mary advised.

"Hi, Sally, nice to see you here again. What's your order for today?" A girl smiled at Sally, then her chestnut eyes moved to me. She observed me from head to toes, then she looked back at Sally, waiting for her order.

"Hi Ifa, it's pleasant to see you again. First, meet Letty Black, my new friend…," Sally introduced me, so the saleswoman looked at me again. Then, she smiled and held me in her thin hand with a unique silver bracelet.

"I'm Ifa. Nice to meet you," her bright smile made me relax and smile as well. I shook her hand.

"Nice to meet you," I said in advance, then looked at Sally, "How many friends do you have?"

"A lot!" Ifa laughed, then looked at the visitors behind us, "Let's catch up later, so what's your order?"

"One Latte, One Cappuccino, and two cheesecakes," Sally smiled, then took our table number, and we both went to the street and took a table near a big tree with thick green leaves. I put my purse to my knees, when Sally asked me, "You said your father died in a car crash? What's his name?"

"James Black. I remember it, that's a wonder," I shrugged, and looked at a waitress going toward us. She put two cups of coffee on our table, then went back to the Café.

"James Black?" She asked with wonder, "Do you remember anything else about him?'

"Actually, no," I shrugged and sighed, "But I have a few drawings of him."

I looked for the diary in my purse, then took it out and gave it to her, opened the pages where I had drawings of my father. He had black hair and deep blue eyes. His face was of a square type, the eyebrows were thick, and the lips were plump. My father was a tall and muscled man. That's how I've seen him in my dreams. To my wonder, my so-called mom never showed me any photos of my father, as if she wanted to wipe up my memories of him.

Sally took my diary and observed the drawings from up till down. Her eyes rounded while she was observing all the drawings of my father, then she closed my diary and gave it back to me with a weird look on her face. She knows my father, or at least heard something about him, but didn't want to tell me that. Why?

"To my wonder, my mom never showed me the photos of my father, no matter how I begged. There's weird, no?" I asked, trying to ease the situation. She made a sip of her Latte and looked at me.

"Well, that's definitely odd, but maybe she just had reasons for it? Maybe she was afraid to wake up some bad memories in your mind? I mean, you said he died in a car crash, perhaps you were there too? Have you thought that it could be the reason for your memory loss?" She said to me, then looked at a waitress bringing us two small plates with cheesecake pieces on them. Sally smiled brightly, "My favorite one!"

"Yeah, could be," I said, then looked at a piece of cake. I've never tried it, as I said before, but I always wanted to. This is my chance to fulfill one of my old dreams. Meanwhile, Sally took a piece of cake, took a sip of coffee, then looked at me.

"You also said about werewolves. Do you believe in them?" She asked me the same question I asked Aiden yesterday. Today, I was more ready to give the answer.

"I'm closer to "yes", than to "no," I answered, and took a piece of cake, tasting it in my mouth, "Does it sound too weird?"

"No, no," she shook her head, then sighed, "You know, I'm not allowed to tell a lot to you because you need to study everything on your own, but… You're on the right way. Just study deeper and made the right conclusions…"

"Who hasn't allowed you to tell me more?" I asked, but instead of the answer, she took another piece of cake and a sip of coffee. I sighed, and took a sip of coffee as well, "Well, okay, maybe it's really better to study on my own. It would be easier to believe…"

"That's right," Sally smiled, and looked at her watch, "I have a client in a half of an hour. He's missing his fangs after the fight at the nightclub. By the way, we'd like to gather with a company in a nightclub, would you mind joining?"

"No, I'm okay, I just need to ask Aiden for a night off," I smiled, and took a piece of cake in my mouth, tasting it. She asked the waitress to pack her cake for take-out, then paid the money for her part, wished me "good luck", and ran away to her job. I relaxed in a chair, took off a book, and continued reading about werewolves.

After a while, a message on my phone brought me back to reality. It was a message from the service saying I can take my car back, so I ate the cake quickly, paid for my part of the order, and went back to the service.

It took me a few minutes to get there, pay for the service, and drove out of it. The price I paid was too low because they did not do so much as my car didn't need anything, except some regular checkups. I decided to drive through the forest, then turn back to the hotel, so I added some speed and turned the music.

There was an old asphalt road leading to the forest coming from the service. I followed it straight to the sign that made me stop, and went out of a car. I got closer to the sign, reading it on the meanwhile, "The Black Forest Pack," those words were crossed out, and I saw handwritten words under those, "The Forbidden Territory. Keep OUT!"

It made me a few seconds to notice a movement not so far away from behind the road sign. I went around the sign and looked deeper into the forest, seeing two men going here and there as if they were guards on some secret territory. I looked at a sign again, "Keep OUT," then at those two men.

Suddenly, they noticed me.

"Red hair! It's her! Get her!" They both ran at me, making me go backward in wonder, then in a second they turned into wolves and ran to me faster. I hurried to the car, started in, and turned around, then added speed, driving back to the city.
