The arena's atmosphere shifted the moment Sasuke and Gaara were announced. Gaara stepped into the arena first, his calm, eerie demeanor was really annoying for some reason.
Sasuke followed his expression a stark contrast to Gaara's. Where Gaara was composed and cold, Sasuke radiated intensity, his dark eyes sharp and focused. He seemed almost eager, a smirk playing at his lips as he moved into his position. His Sharingan flickered to life, guess he was taking this seriously, that's good.
The proctor gave the signal to begin, and the arena was suddenly silent.
Sasuke didn't waste any time. In a burst of speed, he disappeared, reappearing just outside of Gaara's immediate reach. He threw a quick volley of shuriken. But Gaara remained unflinching, his sand rising effortlessly to form a protective barrier around him.
I watched closely, noting how Gaara's sand moved almost on instinct, guess his mom was looking out for him. The crowd murmured in awe, but I wasn't surprised. I had seen Gaara in action before and knew that getting past that sand was no easy feat.
Sasuke seemed to understand this too. He didn't slow down, he dashed around Gaara, testing the sand's reaction time. Each time, Gaara's sand was a fraction of a second faster, moving to intercept him.
But Sasuke was nothing if not adaptable. With a quick series of hand signs, he disappeared in a flash, reappearing high above the arena. He launched himself downward, spinning like a corkscrew, his Chidori sparking to life in his hand. The blue lightning crackled a sharp contrast against the bright sky. Well, that was new.
Gaara's sand moved to block the attack, but Sasuke was faster. He drove the Chidori downward, piercing through the sand with a screeching wail. I leaned forward, holding my breath.
But Gaara wasn't caught off guard. At the last second, his sand hardened, forming a thick shield that absorbed the brunt of Sasuke's attack.
When the dust settled, Sasuke stood a few feet away, breathing heavily, his arm still crackling with residual electricity. Gaara remained where he was, his sand shield only slightly cracked. But for the first time, there was a look of surprise on his face, then a weird grin.
Sasuke smirked, his confidence evident. "Not bad," he muttered, loud enough for Gaara to hear. "But I'm just getting started."
Gaara's response was a low, rumbling growl. The sand around him began to churn, moving faster and more aggressively. It was clear that he wasn't going to let Sasuke get close again.
Without warning, the sand exploded outward, rushing towards Sasuke like a tidal wave. Sasuke leapt back, but the sand was relentless. He dodged and weaved, narrowly avoiding being caught as the sand lashed out.
I could feel my heart racing as I watched. This was a different Gaara than what I had seen in the show, guess many things were already changing because of me being here already.
"Come on Sasuke kick his butt!" Sakura shouted far to close to my ear. I turned to look at her but she was completely focused on the fight.
"Don't you dare lose!" Naruto followed up right after Sakura.
Sasuke landed on the arena wall, crouching low as he surveyed the battlefield. His Sharingan was spinning, analyzing every shift in the sand's behavior. I could see the gears turning in his head, damn he was finally thinking.
And then he vanished from his spot as the sand slammed into where he was. Gaara seemed confused by the sudden disappearance, and that was all the time Sasuke needed. He reappeared behind Gaara, his Chidori once again crackling to life.
But Gaara was ready. His sand reacted instantly, forming a thick wall behind him just as Sasuke's attack hit.
I watched as Sasuke's Chidori flared brighter, his frustration evident as he struggled to break through. But the sand held firm, and for a moment. Great he was spamming that move just like Naruto does with shadow clones.
Then, with a sudden burst of power, Sasuke pushed forward, the Chidori piercing through the sand and landing a glancing blow on Gaara's shoulder. Gaara staggered back, his eyes wide with shock. A thin line of blood appeared where Sasuke's attack had grazed him, and then that maddening rage appeared on his face.
The crowd erupted into cheers, their excitement palpable. Sasuke had drawn first blood. But I knew better than to celebrate just yet. Gaara wasn't beaten not by a long shot.
Gaara's expression darkened, and a low growl rumbled from his throat. The sand around him began to swirl, faster and more chaotic, as if reacting to his emotions.
Sasuke didn't let up. He charged again, But this time, Gaara was ready. His sand moved with a ferocity I hadn't seen before, striking out.
Sasuke dodged and weaved, his Sharingan spinning as he anticipated each attack. But the sand was relentless, adapting to his movements, cutting off his escape routes. It was a game of cat and mouse, and for a moment, it seemed like Gaara had the upper hand.
But Sasuke wasn't out of tricks yet. With a quick series of hand signs, he created a fireball, sending it charging toward Gaara while he circled around to the side. Gaara's sand moved to intercept.
That was all Sasuke needed. He dashed forward, his Chidori blazing to life once more. He drove the attack forward, aiming for Gaara's exposed side. But just as he was about to connect, the sand shifted again, faster than I thought possible.
The sand wrapped around Sasuke's arm, halting his attack mid-strike. Gaara's eyes narrowed, and I could see a cruel smile tugging at the corners of his lips. The sand began to tighten, crushing down on Sasuke's arm with a vice-like grip.
Sasuke grunted in pain, struggling to free himself. Sasuke activated his cursed seal, the black markings spreading across his skin like wildfire. His power surged, and with a roar, he broke free of the sand's grip, launching himself backward to gain some distance.
The crowd gasped, their eyes wide with shock not really understanding what was going on. So he was already going to use it? might have just started the match by using it, maybe he would have won already?
Gaara seemed unfazed, his gaze cold. The sand around him continued to swirl, faster and more violently, as if feeding off his anger. He was gearing up for something big something that could end the fight in an instant. Sasuke didn't wait to find out what it was. He charged forward again, The cursed seal gave him an edge, allowing him to move faster.
Gaara's sand moved to intercept him, but Sasuke was faster. He dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding a tendril of sand that lashed out at him, and closed the distance between them. His fist connected with Gaara's jaw, sending him staggering back as cracks appeared on Gaara's face.
But Gaara didn't stay down for long. With a snarl, he retaliated, his sand lashing out in a frenzy. Sasuke barely had time to react, raising his arm to block the incoming strike. The force of the blow sent him skidding back, his feet digging into the ground to keep from being knocked off balance.
I watched, my heart in my throat, as the two continued to clash. Each strike, each dodge, each counter was more intense than the last. This was fucking amazing.
Sasuke was panting now, the cursed seal markings receding slightly as his energy started to wane. He had pushed himself hard, maybe too hard, and it was starting to show. Gaara, on the other hand, seemed to be getting stronger, his eyes wide with that manic look. The cracks on his skin began to spread, and I realized he was transforming.
This wasn't just Gaara anymore—this was Shukaku, the tailed beast within him, starting to emerge. Holy shit, I wasn't ready for this. Come on Moonhydra if your in there I going to need your help don't ignore me!
The arena seemed to vibrate with a new, ominous energy as Gaara's transformation continued. His body was becoming covered in sand, forming the grotesque shape of a giant sand arm. The crowd gasped and shifted nervously, sensing that this fight was escalating to a dangerous level. I could see it in the proctor's eyes too.
Sasuke tried to get back on the offensive. He charged forward with another Chidori, which I knew was pushing it for him. His speed was incredible, even with his injuries, but it was clear he was slowing down. As he closed the distance, Gaara's monstrous arm swung towards him with bone-crushing force.
Sasuke barely managed to sidestep, but the sand arm still clipped him, sending him sprawling across the arena floor. He tumbled and rolled, finally skidding to a stop near the wall. The crowd gasped again, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a kunai.
I leaned forward, biting my lip. This was getting out of hand. If Sasuke couldn't find a way to finish this quickly, he was done for. And I had a bad feeling Gaara wasn't going to stop, even if the match was called. Then I felt something inside, it was hungry and all that Chakra that Gaara was releasing was waking it slowly.
"Get up, Sasuke!" Naruto shouted, his voice echoing through the arena. But I could see the worry in his eyes, and I felt it too.
Sasuke struggled to his feet, wiping blood from his mouth. He was still trying to figure out a way to get through that sand, but with Gaara transforming, it seemed impossible. His eyes darted around, looking for an opening. Any opening.
But Gaara didn't give him a chance. With a roar, he sent another wave of sand crashing toward Sasuke. Sasuke dodged, barely, but he was slower this time. His cursed seal flared up again, trying to compensate for his fatigue, but it was clear he was reaching his limit.
And then Gaara did something I didn't expect—he jumped, launching himself into the air with a burst of sand. Sasuke's eyes widened in shock. Gaara wasn't playing defensive anymore; he was going for the kill.
In mid-air, the arm that was partly transformed grew larger far larger than anything he had used before. It came crashing down towards Sasuke like a tidal wave. There was no way he could dodge it.
I held my breath. Sasuke braced himself, raising his arms to block as much as he could, but the sand arm hit with such force that it shattered the ground beneath him. The impact was massive, sending a cloud of dust and debris into the air.
The crowd fell silent, the tension unbearable. I could barely see through the dust, but I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. Had Gaara crushed him? Was this it?
When the dust finally settled, Sasuke was lying on the ground, motionless. The sand was beginning to wrap around him, and Gaara's sadistic grin grew wider. This was it. He was going to finish Sasuke off.
But before Gaara could strike the final blow, something incredible happened. A massive burst of chakra erupted from the other side of the arena. I turned to see Naruto, his eyes fierce and determined, his hands forming the seals for the Shadow Clone Jutsu. He had finally decided to step in.
"Not on my watch!" Naruto shouted, and a dozen clones materialized around him, all charging straight for Gaara.
The crowd went wild, a mix of cheers and gasps, as Naruto's clones descended on Gaara, each one throwing kunai or aiming punches. Gaara turned his attention to them, releasing Sasuke and lashing out with his sand to defend himself.
I let out a breath as I used my body FLicker to move in and grab Sasuke. Naruto's intervention brought me to pull him out of there.
The proctor, sensing the danger, finally stepped forward to end the match. "Enough! This match is over!"
Gaara snarled, clearly not wanting to stop, but he hesitated, glancing around at the incoming clones and the proctor's stern face. The sand around him started to recede slowly, and I could see the fight leaving his eyes, replaced by that cold, detached look once more.
Sasuke, meanwhile, was being helped up by me. He looked battered, beaten, but he was alive. And from the look in his eyes, he wasn't done fighting yet.
As I led Sasuke to the medical ninja they took him off the field, I felt a strange mixture of relief and dread. The fight was over for now, but I knew this wasn't the end. Gaara was a force to be reckoned with, and Sasuke had tasted his first real defeat. The Chunin Exams were only getting started, and from here on out, things were going to get even more intense and far more dangerous.
Naruto turned back to the stands, I gave him a nod, as we both were about to make our way back.
