In this world, there were several mysterious forces. However, the ones commoners had the most experience with were Knights!
Knights were warriors who had gone through tough training and had stimulated their inner life energy. Their physical attributes were way beyond that of a normal human.
To be a Magus, it required a specific kind of gift, and amongst tens of thousands of people, it was possible that there wasn't even one such person. However, being a Knight was different; as long as they were willing to put in the effort, anyone could become a Knight!
For these Knights, not only were their physical attributes several times that of normal humans, they were also well versed in using various weaponry, as well as in the killing arts. Some Knights even had special secret skills that could unleash a sudden burst of power!
The kingdoms of the common world, along with the nobility, were generally made up of Knights.
The Ironguard family which Ourin was part of was also a Knight family. The original founder of the family had fought in wars together with the king and had accomplished much meritorious service. Thus, they had been awarded with the Baron title, as well corresponding holdings.
After an overall sweep of the information, Ourin remembered a scene from the past.
It was a small jungle in the Baron's holdings, and John Ironguard was wearing a warrior's outfit with a stern expression on his face. He was facing the infant Ourin as he said: "Today, I will teach you the secret skill that has been passed down in the Ironguard family: the [Trigram Defence] and [Ironguard Secret Breathing Technique". You must remember that you can never teach this to anyone outside our family!" At that moment, Baron John's face held an unprecedented stern look!
Baron John was very severe on Ourin. As the first heir, his fate would have been to inherit the Ironguard Barony, if it weren't for the passing wandering acolyte who discovered magical talent in him. From Baron John's point of view, Ourin was an investment to raise the glory of the Ironguard Family, and even if he did not manage to reach the magus realm, he would still possess strength far surpassing the average knight. In Baron John's mind, this would be enough to raise the nobility rank to the [Count] level.
The memory finally ended with Baron John emitting white mist from his mouth as he manipulated his cross blade and repeatedly deflecting the charge of a three-horned bull, a mighty beast weighing over eight hundred pounds. Baron John's attribute were that of a knight who had reached the peak of his realm, yet it should not be enough to block an adult three-horned bull's charge. This was the result of high attributes coupled with high mastery of the technique.
Ourin smiled inwardly, knowing that even if knights were not as strong as level two acolytes, there was a lot to gain from training in the way of knights. After all, even if Grand Knights could not be the match of magi, there were many tales of Grand Knights being on par with level two acolytes, or even level three acolytes in some cases.
Although the Ironguard Secret Knight Technique required him to be a knight and having awakened life force, the Knight Killing Technique was just an advanced martial art technique. As long as he trained long enough in it, he would be able to learn it since his memory was engraved with a master practicing it in front of his eyes.
Without hesitation, Ourin picked up a sword, and began to study it meticulously, his scientific mind birthed from modern era college education proving effective in this kind of situation. He might not have a biochip, or immense dragon-bloodline physique, but he possessed something far more valuable. Determination, discipline and a decisiveness that allowed to make pragmatic choices.
Leylin, his biggest obstacle in his path for growth, was no longer of this world, and his broken magical artefact was the key to enter the magical academy of his choice. Although walking the same steps as Leylin was tempting, Ourin knew that he should pick the academy that suited his affinity the best. In order to become a magus, he would have to step onto the unknown at some point anyway.
