Chapter 49

Nanook walks out with them again, and then they go to the car and take turns making their phone calls. Rene goes first, calling Damon. He explains they need to look deeper into Mr. Socks, and that they’re close to finding a cure for the children. Damon sounds happy and says he’ll get the police right on it. He even seems fine with the idea of Evan staying to test the frogs when they’re found and to make up the antitoxin.

Rene starts driving home while Evan makes his phone call to a woman named Cherry. He orders all the things he’ll need to help with the kittens, and then he hangs up.

“It feels so good to be making progress,” Evan says happily.

“The parents and families will be thrilled. They’ll probably thank Nanook and not you, which sucks, but I’m glad you’ve helped them. I’m thankful,” Rene says.

“I don’t need the parents thanking me. Seeing the kids getting better will be enough for me. But thank you.” Evan smiles.
