Chapter Twenty-eight

Liam

On the car ride home, the car glided through the twilight streets, Martin at the wheel, Karen and I side-by-side in the backseat. We had barely left the hotel when Karen broke the silence, her voice laced with something that wasn't quite jealousy, but something sharper.

"I saw your 'girlfriend' literally blushing at you," she said, the air quotes dripping with disdain.

I knew she was talking about Vanessa. What Karen didn't know was how much I wanted Vanessa to be my girlfriend. "You mean Richard's girlfriend?" I replied.

"Keep saying that. Maybe it will deter you from her," she shot back.

A heavy silence descended again, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the engine. Finally, Karen spoke, her voice laced with morbid curiosity. "I heard you fired someone today."
