Chapter 14

The church wasn’t far from the golf course, and soon they pulled into the parking lot. Other faithful goers were streaming into the church.

“Good, we’ve got several minutes left before Mass starts,” Jojo said. “You going to wait here?”

“Yes,” Erwin said. “I went to church very early this morning.”

Adam followed Jojo into the church. The church had marble floors in the main vestibule, and everything echoed, even the coughs of its parishioners. The ceiling was exposed concrete, and the pews were in a semi-circle around the altar. Jojo sat close up front, and Adam followed. Even though it had been a long time since had had attended church, once the lector and the choir came out, the liturgy and pattern were all familiar. He followed along with the readings and the sermon, given by a young priest, was short and to the point. Before Adam knew it, Mass had concluded and people began streaming out except for Jojo, who remained seated in thought.
