Meeting Koakuma and my first spell

I wake up, in another room again. To be specific in the library itself. I sit up straight and look around me. I see Patchouli sitting next to me reading a book. "So, you finally woke up? About time." She says, her eyes fixated on her book. "What did you do to me? Where is Sanae?" I ask in a stressed tone.

Patchouli closes her book and sighs. "I just drained your mana, so you'd pass out. It's a necessary measure so I could examine you better. Sanae was right though you have a great magical potential, but I highly doubt your berry-sized human brain will be able to learn anything but the simplest spells." She coughs after finishing her sentence. "Are you alright?" I ask as her cough didn't sound healthy at all. "Yes, don't worry asthma will never be enough to do any harm to me.

So, about your second question Sanae left about 20 hours ago. She was the one who actually sat you down if it was me, I would've just left you laying on the ground."

I ignore her comments. "So, what now?" Instead of answering Patchouli points at a book. As she delves into her book again, I take the book she pointed. 'Lingua Latinam I' is the title of the book. I open it and it's a book about learning Latin. "Do I really need this?" I ask. "Learning Latin is important. Without it you can't cast spells. Now learn quietly and don't disturb me anymore."

I get bored quickly as I learn the first words of the Latin language. Soon my boredom gets cured though as a white haired-blue eyed maid comes and places a cup of tea and a bowl of cookies in front of Patchouli. Right after that she turns to me. "So, you are awake. I didn't know that I am sorry." The maid is extremely polite to me. "My name is Sakuya, I am the head maid here. Do you need anything?" Her voice is almost soothing. "Nice to meet you miss Sakuya. Could I get water and anything warm to eat?" I ask trying to be as polite as possible. "Of course." Sakuya then disappears and reappears and places a bowl of warm noodles and water on the table. "Thank you." I say not really knowing what happened. Sakuya disappears again and I eat while trying to learn a bit more Latin.

About an hour later of silence, and Patchouli coughing sometimes, I finally break it. "Do you have no other task for me?" Patchouli looks at me. "Take a fun book and read it or nap or whatever. We will try some spells tomorrow." I decide to take a walk around the library.

As I look at the different books in the giant shelfs, I meet a red-haired woman in a black and white dress. She sorts books in shelves. "Uhm, hello could I maybe help you?" I ask the woman. "You are Miss Patchouli's student, right? Sure, you can help."

I kneel next to her and quietly sort books. "Say, what's your name?" I ask her. "My name is Koakuma. Thank you for helping me by the way." We slowly get to the last books. "Well, I have nothing better to do." I tell her. Koakuma smiles "Well Patchy was never really fond of humans." We finally sorted the pile of books. "How so? I try to be as polite as possible." I blame myself but again Koakuma smiles and tells me "There is a blonde-haired human magician that always steals her books, that's why she thinks of humans so lowly. But maybe if you keep being nice, she might warm up." I nod feeling a bit of empowerment from her words. "I will leave you alone now though. Good luck with her! And again, thank you for the help." "It was nice meeting you, good luck with your work." I say with a smile.

Koakuma goes on with her business elsewhere. I meanwhile go back to Patchouli. As I arrive at the big round table, I see her sleeping. She kind of looks cute napping so peacefully. I got a bit tired as well, so I sit on the opposite side of hers and sleep.

Hours later I get woken up. When I open my eyes, I see Patchouli standing next to me. "Wake up human." She says in her usual soft voice. "Already? But it's still night, isn't it?" I ask her. She pouts, "It doesn't matter, the sooner you are out of here, the sooner I don't have to smell your filthy human smell." Patchouli gestures me to stand up.

"So, a first basic spell would be Non Statera. What do these words mean?" Patchouli asks me. "Well non means no of course." I say innocently. "I knew you were going to be useless. Non Statera means no balance. It's a simple spell to make someone fall. So to cast a spell you need to concentrate and fantasize about the spells' effects while saying these words in your mind." Koakuma shows up. "I am sorry I am late. I will be your practice dummy for today!" Koakuma says.

The next hour or longer I try and try to do the spell. Patchouli is reading while Koakuma is trying to cheer me on. After what feels like my millionth time I finally do it and Koakuma falls to the ground. "Good job! Try it one more time." Koakuma says happily. I try it again and she falls again. "Yay! You learned your first spell!" She says as she stands up again. "It took him way too long for such a simple spell like that. I will give you some more advice later and then you can return to the green-haired shrine maiden." Patchouli says.
