Chapter 25: Difficult Conversations and Conclusions

Max beamed at Gemma as he opened the door for her, excited that she’d accepted his invite for dinner earlier that day. His smile faltered as he took in her troubled expression and immediately pulled her into his arms, peering down into her face worriedly.

"What's wrong?" Max asked softly, his hand stroking Gemma's cheek softly. "You look like someone died or something."

Gemma offered Max a sad smile before extricating herself from his embrace and entering the apartment. Max felt hurt and confusion flooding his veins as he closed the door and turned to find Gemma standing awkwardly by the kitchen island.

Gemma felt guilty as her eyes swept across the kitchen; taking in all the little things Max had started doing in preparation for dinner. Max walked into the kitchen and turn off the stove where he'd had a pot of water coming to a boil.

"What's going on, Gem?" Max asked as he stood in front of her.

Gemma sighed tiredly. "We need to talk. Can we sit here?"
