*Ch 272: Detectives

"Someone's at the door," I stated the obvious while I removed his hands from my jeans to stop him from sliding them any farther from my hips.

"Whoever it is can take a hint and leave," Kai chuckled carelessly. "I've missed you."

Then he lowered his face to kiss my lips. He was doing everything to distract me with his lips smooching me on and off at several different angles. Yet that steady knocking didn't go away.

"Kai, open up!" we both heard his dad's broad voice demand behind it.

Kai sighed as he got up, annoyed by this disturbance. "This better be important." He muffled before he opened the door to find his dad outside it.

"It is!" Mr. Collin sternly replied to hear him through the door.

He came in and glanced at me while I was buckling my belt. It's apparent he knew we were in the middle of something.

"What's this about?" Kai griped. "As you can see, we were wanting privacy."

"You'll have to do that later," Mr. Collin rejected. "Victoria, you'll need to come with me."

"What's this about!" Kai hissed, repeating himself as I was fixing my sweatshirt.

Mr. Collin seethed his animus conduct as he retorted. "You'll find out soon enough. I warned you about this. Now detectives are here to speak with your wife."

"They aren't talking to her!" Kai countered, getting protective over me.

"Right now, we don't have a choice!" Mr. Collin bites back.

"Kai, what did you do?" I exclaimed, stressing from getting upset.

Mr. Collin presented a fake smile and touched my shoulder. "Don't stress. No matter what is said, understand we will handle it," he claimed.

"Tell them to leave!" Kai growled ferociously.

Again Mr. Collin snapped. "Let it go!"

"I'll talk to them." I resolved to end this dispute between father and son. Otherwise, they'd wrangle it out for hours. I kissed Kai's cheek and then left with Mr. Collin. Though my gut broiled the whole way to his office, where I found two detectives waiting patiently for my arrival.

"Mrs. Victoria Collin, please have a seat." One detective insisted as Mr. Collin shut the door, leaving me alone with two detectives.

"Please, call me Victoria." I correct, taking a seat across the couch from them.

"Of course, we appreciate your willingness to speak with us." the other detective seemed to express his condolences. "I'm Detective Clark and this is Detective Heart."

"Can we skip the introductions and get on with this?" I urged, doing my best not to sound too snippy. Honestly, I had a bad feeling. One wrong move, and I know Kai will kill them without a second thought.

"Of course." Clark asked, handing me a file, "Have you met these two ladies before?"

With some hesitation, I took the file, and opened it to see two pictures of these familiar women. The one was that same blonde Kai had kissed at the club on my second attempt to escape from him. The other woman was the brunette Rome was with. Months ago, they were found dead in a drain pipe.

Oh, no! Kai must've killed them. Then he put their bodies in a road drain pipe. All this happened way before I knew Kai and everyone else were vampires.

"Victoria."

My body jumped when I heard Detective Heart say my name. I looked up from the photos and did whatever I could to calm my voice.

"Yes, I met them once at a club, but that was months ago," I admitted.

"Was your husband and his friend

with them at that club too?" Detective Heart interrogated me.

I felt this tightness in my throat as I raised a question over his. "What does this have to do with anything?"

"Answer the question." Detective Heart expressed rather dour.

Before trying to speak, I swallowed this lump that was wedged in my throat. Their austere faces didn't help how I felt right now.

"I suppose they did," I responded, trying to keep a steady voice.

"Thank you, for answering honestly," Detective Clark smiled cordially.

Wonderful! They were doing the whole good cop bad cop on me.

"Is this all you needed?" I asked, hoping to dismiss myself from these intense questions.

"We have a few more questions," Detective Heart confirmed more adamantly. I should've figured this wouldn't be that easy.

"We also have a written statement that Orlando Mill claimed you were with him that night." Heart began. "He claimed you were trying to get away from Kai."

"I needed a break from him." I lied, and my flesh heated. "So please, get on with what this is about."

Heart narrowed a churlish sight toward me. "You do realize both these ladies, along with Elena were murdered only a night apart."

"What's your point?" I remark, feeling a hot sweat across my forehead.

Detective Heart exclaimed potently. "We have surveillance showing your husband and his friend were the last seen with these ladies. Understand, he is a suspect for murdering them and Elena."

"I-I..." I couldn't speak.

But that didn't matter because Detective Clark started talking, "Your ex-fiance claimed that Kai kidnapped you several times. Orlando said you were trying to get away from him. We were told, Kai drugged your food, held you captive against your will, and forced you to marry him. Orlando mentioned nothing about you needing a break. Is this statement true or not?"

"Well..." I opened my mouth to speak, but only one word came out.

Yes, everything was true. Except for the part about Kai drugging my food. However, he did kidnap me. Just like he probably did kill those ladies at that club, but he didn't kill Elena. Rex did. Too much has changed since any of this occurred months ago. During that time, I had no idea Kai was a vampire. Since then, it's been a whole new game-changer.

Because I wasn't speaking, Detective Heart added, "Alejandro Mill also made a testimony, claiming Kai has physically harmed you."

"What!" I exclaimed more out of shock as my heart started to beat faster. "That isn't true."

Detective Heart continued as he flipped through a file on his lap. "You say that. However, Alejandro said you shared with him that during a time you ran away from Kai at a duck pond, you admitted that he handled you roughly."

"No... that's not what I meant..." I stammered, shaking my head in disbelief.

"Your friends also said you admitted Kai has a temper," Clark added, looking me dead in the eye. "You told your friends one time he punched the wall near your face."

All these affidavits were piling up. It's becoming too much for me to keep up with it.
