Starstone

Lauren sat in the waiting room of the hospital twirling a few strands of hair around her finger. She had ridden in an ambulance even though she told them that she was fine but they said that they just wanted to make sure that she was okay. Lauren's heart jumped a mile when the door opened suddenly and a nurse walked up to her. "Is he gonna make it?" she asked her, fearing the worst.

She took a deep breath. "You better come to see him, Sasha will explain everything." Then she led Lauren down a hall and up some stairs and down another hall until she stopped in front of a door and opened it for her.

Inside, Lauren found Ben laying in a bed with all kinds of medical equipment hooked to him with doctors and nurses alike crowding around him; she pushed her way through them.

A nurse that had a name tag that read HELLO my name is… Sasha looked over to her. "You must be Lauren right?"

"Yes," she answered, "Is he going to be okay?"

"Well, it's hard to explain. He's… in a coma, but it's different than any other that they," she said pointing to the doctors "have ever seen. He will get weaker every day until he… you know… dies."

Lauren gasped and put her hand on Ben's arm. "So no one can help him?" she asked, tears threatening to spill out.

"I said there's nothing they can do. There is something you can do that might be able to save him."

"What?" she asked, desperately. "Anything!"

"Come over here," she said, walking over to a corner of the room. She handed Lauren some kind of stone that looked as if it were made of glass and ice but it had a blue tint to it. "This is the Starstone," she explained. "Take it, you will find that you will need it." Lauren put it into one of the pockets of her costume that she was still wearing.

"Why will I need this?" she asked, very confused.

"It could save your life. It belonged to my father when he was a member of the Knights of Evermore."

"What's the Knights of Evermore? It sounds like something from a King Arthur story."

A twinkle appeared in Sasha's eye. "Don't lose it. Be careful of who you trust. Not everyone in Eddeathra is who they seem."

"What's Eddeathra? Is this a joke?"

"If you want to find a miracle for your friend, do this tomorrow night: when the moon is fully visible, hold the Starstone directly in a beam of moonlight. Be careful, and trust your instincts."
