Unexpected Problem

As they carefully walk up the stairs they could faintly hear the zombies shuffling about above them, or maybe they were just imaging it because they knew that the zombies would be there. They had gotten 2/3 of the way up the stairs before they suddenly stopped and William started hammering the stairs again, this time instead of trying to destroy the entire staircase he only wanted the 2 outside sections leaving the middle still intact so the zombies had to come through 1 or 2 at a time, after a minute or two he had broken the stairs and Felix was sent up to get the zombies attention and start the actual fight.

He ran up the stairs and came to the top, unless you already knew that the zombies were there you would have no idea about the trap at this point still. He cautiously walked through the door and a few steps into the room, dead silence and the room was completely empty of zombies and any dead bodies. He took a few more steps into the room until he heard shouts coming from back down the stairs from William and Jack, knowing that if they were shouting something must have gone terribly wrong. When he was back down the stairs he saw William and Jack fighting a hoard of zombies at the stairs, they had moved so that the zombies still had to go through the funnel but it barely helped them. All the way down the stairs was a trail of zombies stretching out onto the streets, just as Felix was about to go help them he heard something from behind him and saw that another hoard had appeared behind him.

What none of them except Annabel knew was that by the time Felix went into the room the hoard had split into three smaller hoards, one jumped out the window with the first few waves dying on impact, but as more and more jumped, they started to land on the rest of the bodies and survived with minimal injuries and started running back into the building and up the stairs ambushing William and Jack before they had a chance to stop them. The 2nd group had gone back up the stairs into the 7th floor and when Felix went back to check on William and Jack they ran back down and surrounded him as well. Finally the last group also jumped out the window but instead of going back inside the building they ran towards another nearby building and disappeared, Annabel tried to call William again when she saw this but before he could pick up the zombies had already arrived.

As the fight started it was clear that if they didn't do something soon the three would die here, Felix was the worst off as he needed at least a bit of room to be able to fight properly and was focusing more on dodging the zombies than killing them. William and Jack had it slightly easier but not much as they had better protective clothes on so they didn't have to dodge as much because they could block a few of the hits, the small space also helped and same with the shear volume of zombies, this meant that they couldn't get enough room to pounce and could only slash and claw at them making things slightly better.

William finally managed to answer Annabel's call and quickly put it onto speaker but over the groans of the zombies they could only hear small chunks at a time.

"You...window...survive.....part of a plan....another building.....watching....hurry."

This didn't mean anything to them until Jack managed to look out one if the massive windows that go up the side of the stairs and saw the massive pile of zombies lying near them, then it sadly clicked. Jack shouted to the others about what the plan was and they both got the same expression as him, sheer disgust. Felix dodged a few move attacks from the zombies while pushing and punching his way towards the window before punching it and cracking the glass then went back to dodging and killing zombies. Jack was the next one to hit the windows as soon as he got the opportunity, this time the window completely smashed raining shards of glass down onto the ground beside the pile of dead zombies. Seeing this the three of them slowly made their way as close to the window as fast as they could without putting the others in danger, Felix was the first to reach it as he was already the closest to it. He looked down at the pile of zombies and nearly threw up at the thought of what he knew he would have to do.

Jack joined him soon after and then finally William managed to join them, still swinging his sledgehammer killing any zombies that got too close. William was the first to jump out the window and slam into the mound of broken bones and rotting flesh, he quickly surfaced with a grimace and waddled his way out before shouting up to Felix and Jack to hurry up if they're coming. After a few moments they both followed him and thankfully weren't impaled by any of the bones sticking up, as soon as they had landed the zombies that were attacking them followed suit and also jumped out after them but by the time the first bunch had gotten free from the mound the three were long gone and running back towards the building Annabel was in. They had made it inside and quickly closed the doors and blocked them before the zombies managed to smash their way in, they went straight to Annabel to find out what just happened and why the plan went so wrong. When they arrived at her floor however they found the man that they had sort of befriended, laying on the ground dead...with chunks of flesh ripped off his body and scratch marks along his skin and finally a bullet hole in his head.

William ran straight to the room that he left Annabel in and tried to open the door but it was locked, so he started slamming into it shouting at her to open the door. After a few seconds it slowly opened and Annabel poked her head out of the door and looked at them all with a glare that could kill giants.

"World you IDIOTS please! Keep it down, first off do you want all the zombies to know exactly where we are. And second you are going to wake up the girl and trust me you Do. Not. Want. To. Wake. Her. Up. She is pissed, sad, angry, and 14 so don't even try it."

William who was about to shout back at her just stands there like a deer caught in headlights, before yanking open the door and looking in the room. Sure enough a teenage girl with long dark hair thats just past her shoulders is curled up in a ball fast asleep...clutching a butchers knife.

William turns round and looks at Annabel with a 'WTF' look but she just shrugs her shoulders and drags him out of the room before he can say or do anything else. Closing the door behind her she turns around to the three boys.

"I would expect that you probably have a few questions and I'll be happy to answer them but not while you all are standing so close you all stink worse than a heap of cow shit, what did you guys do? You know what never mind let's continue, the zombies knew you were coming and set up an ambush. Not the one I told you about, it was some sort of decoy ambush, the real one was them jumping out the window to get below you. They split into three different groups, two jumped one stayed to get behind Felix, one went back up the stairs while the last went into one of the other buildings nearby. As for why they went there we can all have a pretty good guess, but for why there's a dead body beside you and a sleeping child with a knife? That's going to be weird to explain. Basically the man had brought his daughter with him here, and kept her hidden from everyone he saw including us or at least until he saw just how many zombies were in the building. When he saw that he decided to show me but just before you guys managed to escape a few zombies somehow found us and attacked, I ran back for the gun but he stayed so that his daughter could run away. When I came back the zombies had gone except him, who had turned and immediately tried to attack me...so I shot him."

Nobody says anything until Jack finally breaks the silence by walking over to the body and picking the man up, he carries him outside and walks away around one of the corners and disappears. William runs after him leaving Felix and Annabel who both decided to go back into the room and watch incase anymore zombies showed up.

By the time the two get back it is almost pitch black and Felix and Annabel dont even notice them until they open the doors, William is carrying a shovel and they are both covered in dirt with deject looks on their faces. Annabel and Felix don't ask them where they went as it is pretty obvious where they went. They went straight to one of the empty office rooms and collapsed on the floor not even shutting the door behind them.

On the other side of Belfast in one of the massive storage buildings, whats left of the army and police force are gathered. After the failed attempt to secure a safe zone there are only about 150 of them left who can still fight. They quietly talk amongst themselves on small groups, about what might happen and the failed plan. Until a large crash on one of the doors made a slight dent in the metal, then they whispered to each other before one of the commanders shouted at all of them to be quiet.

A few seconds later another commander started addressing them.

"All right you lot settle down, I know our situation might not be the best at the moment but at the very least we are alive. And we will do our best to make sure it stays that way, but with the way things are going unless we can get a message to any survivers outside for assistance we will be trapped here. With all the zombies blocking our exits we can't even send anyone out...Rest In Peace Jacob Carson he was a fool but our fool. We need to find a way out before whatever is smashing that door down succeeds, but none of us are capable of surviving the onslaught. So unless any of you have an idea we might just have to try our last ditch attempt at forcing our way out."

The rest of the soldiers are police mumbld to each other but no one says anything out loud, until one of the police officers, a female with short black hair sticks up her hand.

"Umm sir I might have an idea but it all depends on a theory, when we were first attacked by this group of zombies I was at the very front of the assault, with my dog Bear. All the zombies that I saw went after humans, not any of our dogs. Most dogs ran away when their owners got killed or turned but because I obviously survived, Bear is still here. Dogs like zombies as much as we do and Bear loves to meet new people as long as they don't do anything to suggest they aren't nice, if we can send him out with a note and he finds someone then we have a chance of at least letting someone know we are here which is better than our current situation. I would be happy to volunteer Bear for the job as long as we make sure he won't be killed by any survivers."

The commander just started at her for a few seconds thinking about what she just said to him before responding.

"Are you seriously suggesting we leave all our lives in the hands of a dog, when we don't even know for sure if the zombies will leave him alone...But as much as I hate the idea it is our only chance of getting out of here. Get him ready and somebody write the damn message already..."
