NARRATIVE of WARD COURIER/CONFERENCE with TED BENNETT
March, 2010
SOUTH WALES and BUFFALO, NY
On a bright morning near the end of March I walked into an impromptu conversation in the faculty room. A handful of my colleagues were busting chops over the grumbling coming from the English department about the paperwork the newly-hired consultant was expecting. As the department chair, I felt like I had to stand up. I admit that the English teachers keep their antennae up. Hell, I have my antennae up. Anything extra at that whole school that takes writing or reading gets dumped onto the English department. SAT registration. Spelling tests. Evaluation documents. It's like they think we read and write well but don't really do much of anything.
