"Sorry, I'm really sorry," Daniel said, standing in front of the door as Anastasia opened it. "I thought the meeting would wrap up quickly, but it got extended due to some internal issues that came up."
"No, it's fine. I shouldn't have bothered you—I know you're busy." Anastasia offered a light smile before pausing. "So…" she hesitated, "Lily's already asleep."
"Ah… right." Daniel's voice softened, understanding the message behind her words. "I get it. It's almost ten." He smiled awkwardly. "Maybe… next time?"
Anastasia nodded. "If you're free, just give me a call. I'll make time for you to see Lily," she said, offering a warm smile.
Daniel returned the nod, pressing his lips together. He'd been excited the whole drive over, looking forward to seeing his little girl. But, as he'd guessed, she was already asleep. "Good night," he said, turning reluctantly toward the hallway.
