"Well?" Dresden asked.
He was 'kind' enough to allow me to sit with them at an actual table in the kitchen as opposed to being tied in a basement. The woman, Murphy was sitting on the left and his brother, Thomas was to my right while he was in front of me. I looked down at the mug that appeared in front of me that had some how become filled with coffee.
"Well, what?" I asked him with a raised eyebrow. "And where the hell did this coffee come from?"
"Magic." He snorted. "Now, here's what I don't get; you try to kill me what- three? Four times? And here you are, six years later, asking me for help. Why me?"
"It was only twice, actually. As for why you in particular? You, Mr.Dresden, are one hell of a PI!" I said matter of fact. "I need someone who can magic their way through this case. We got a witch but she's kind of being a bitch at the moment."
"Someone I know?" Dresden asked.
"LeFay."
"'LeFay?'" Thomas asked incredulously. "That's our mother's maiden name!" They both looked at each other.
"What?" I thought for a moment. "I think her daughter's name was Margret?"
"That's mom's name…" Dresden said slowly. "What's this woman's name?"
"Morgan LeFay. You know, King Arthur, sword in the stone, king of Britain, that one!" I paused for effect. "Don't bother getting to know her. She's a total bitch."
Dresden rubbed his brows as if he had a headache. "Okay, who else is part of this?"
"As far as I'm aware, Morgan LeFay, Cú Chulainn, Vlad, and a dude name James Whisk." I shrugged. "That's it for now."
Murphy slammed her mug down on the table making coffee spill everywhere. "Dracula? He's real?!"
"Yeah?" I shifted my gaze between Thomas and Dresden. "Who is this chick, anyway?"
Dresden's brows furrowed. "Your fancy eye doesn't tell you?"
"I got the name and age, but…" I squinted my eyes at her. "You got angel blood in you, girl?
"Angel blood?" She asked, incredulous. "I'm completely human. My parents are both human too." She waved her hand around her face as if swatting flies away.
"Hmm…" I raised the mug and took a sip.
I definitely felt some kind of 'holiness' from her! if she isn't lying… "Ah! You got one of the swords!"
Hey eyebrows rose. "Uh… yeah, I used to. How'd you know that?"
"You got divine energy radiating off of you. Not strong though. That's why I thought you had angel blood."
The swords in question were made of the nails that pinned Jesus to the cross. There are only three of them and the wielders become literal holy knights, powers and all.
Excalibur was one of these swords.
Now the real question is; why are two LeFay descendants here with a woman who wielded a sword that, at the very least, was cut from the same cloth as Excalibur?
"Interesting…" I said quietly. "You know, Morgan LeFay was Arthur Pendragon's protector. Ironic that her descendants would meet another wielder of one of the Swords of the Cross."
"What are you trying to say, red-eye?" Dresden asked me.
"Seems like fate has more in store for you than you think."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Thomas asked.
"It means that I don't believe in coincidence." I turned to Dresden. "You know what I mean."
He sighed and tapped his hand on the table. "Yeah. A bunch of people are going missing and it turns out I'm the grandson of THE Morgan LeFay and I just happen to know two people who have a Sword of the Cross AND I just got a power up like we're playing super Mario." He looked at me. "Nothing drops into place like that. Someone is setting us up."
I nodded. "Seems like it."
"You said it was fate, though?" Murphy asked quietly while exchanging a glance with Dresden.
"Fate doesn't exist. Nothing is a coincidence." I said as my phone started to ring. I took it out and saw that it was an unknown number.
Answering it I asked. "James?"
"Yeah. What's goin' on, Birger?" He said through the speaker.
"Can you come to my location? Got a new guy for you. He's hella good at what he does!"
A portal opened up behind me. "Awesome!" James said as he hung up the phone and walked through.
"Did you just teleport?" Dresden asked as his jaw dropped.
"Nah, Portal. I'm also pretty good at what I do, Mr. Dresden!" James said with a wink.
I stood up and turned to James. "Right. James Whisk, meet Karrin Murphy, Harry Dresden, and Thomas Raith."
"Nice to meet you." James said. "I hate to skip the pleasantries, but we are going to be very busy, so I would prefer if we started sooner rather than later."
"Sounds good." I began as I gave Dresden a side eye. "What do you need to get started?"
"The location of all the murders that happened within the last month." He said in a serious tone. "From oldest to most recent."
I reached my hand out to him. "Good to have you on the team." He grasped my hand and we shook before I tightened my grip. "I'm trusting you, Dresden."
Trust. It was something that I didn't have in a lot of people. I could count on one hand the amount of people I trust. Malum and Isaiah were a given. Dracula to a certain point as well. God has done too much shit for me to trust him anymore but I still respect him enough if he gives his word. I knew Dresden understood what I meant, because he had the same views as me.
His eyebrows furrowed for a moment. "You… Hell's Bells." He cursed. "Your family was one of them?"
"Yeah." I let go of his hand. "I'll get out of your hair. James? Get them up to date."
"Sure, but what are you gonna do?" He asked in a confused tone.
I grinned at him. "I'm gonna go for a walk! I'll call if I find something."
"Alright… I got your number now, so I'll do the same."
"Sounds good." I said as I turned to the front door.
"Birger." Dresden called to me and I turned around. "I know what you meant."
"Of course you do. Me and mine." I said as I opened the door and walked outside.
"Me and mine." He said quietly.
The four of them walked through the portal and I shut the door. My grin vanished and my face became blank as I walked down the steps back onto the street.
"What." I said as I stopped at the curb.
A voice called out like a caressing hand. "Having trouble, dear?"
I walked briskly on the sidewalk. "Yes. And I don't need help from you."
It whispered directly in my ear. "Are you sure? I can help in more ways than one…"
"Fuck off. You're no longer here."
"Oh, but I am!" The voice sounded further away this time as it slowly faded away. "I'll always be right…"
I exhaled as the voice disappeared.
*It's official.* I thought. *I'm going insane.*
They say an person who is questioning their sanity isn't truly insane. Me? Yeah, I think hearing voices is pretty insane.
I hailed a cab and hopped in the back.
"Where to?" The cabbie asked me.
"Emic Enterprise." I handed him a hundred dollar bill.
"Yessir!" He grinned as he took it.
The ride only took twenty minutes. I stepped out of the cab and looked at the tall building in front of me. I hadn't been here since it's construction back in '93. The building hadn't aged a bit since then, due to the 'expensive' materials used. The whole thing was built from adamantium, which was know for being both lightweight and almost indestructible! It's quite literally a metal so rare and expensive that even gods use it for their personal weapons and armor! You couldn't even begin to imagine the sheer cost of the building alone. It wasn't something you could get with money.
I entered the building and walked to who I assumed was the receptionist. She looked up from her computer and before I even got there she gestured at the elevator.
"You can go on up, sir. Mr. Eden is expecting you."
My eye brows rose as I thanked her before stepping into the elevator. It started to rise without me pressing a button. As it opened I stepped out directly into a Library. It was quite spacious, having a total of three floors which had bookshelves lining the walls. In the center of the room, a single candle was lit on top of a mahogany table. The man who was reading from said candle light looked up as I entered. His physique would put even Fae warriors to shame! He looked as if he was forged for battle. For war. And I suppose he was. As his hazel eyes met mine through his long blonde hair.
"Birger." He said in a arrogant tone. His voice had a slight accent to it. "Business or pleasure?"
I walked to the desk and stood opposite him. Crossing my arms I replied. "Business."
"What do you need?"
"Half a dozen silver throwing knives, and a sword. As well as an adamantium shield." I replied in a serious voice. "You still got my axe?"
"I'll have everything waiting for you down stairs." He replied. "Your… 'axe' will be there as well."
I nodded. "Payment?"
He grinned at me. "Same as always!"
I nodded again as I pulled out a single coin and flicked it to him with my thumb.
"Zeus." I said as he caught it.
He laughed and slapped the table. "I'll throw in some gauntlets! Zeus is gonna be pissed when he finds out!"
God Coin. It's basically the currency of the gods. They have no need for money so instead the use these coins. Each coin has it's own design, usually depicting their respective sigil. The one I gave him had a lightning bolt on it, which is Zeus' sigil. Now, Zeus owes him.
I turned around and started walking back to the elevator. "Pleasure doing business, Cain."
He laughed again in response.
“‘Coincidence’ is the word we use when we can't see the levers and pulleys.”
