“So, since it’s a long ride, Hazel,” Christopher said with a devilish smile. He held up a CD player, and then ear-bud headphones in addition to the large noise cancelling ones. “Want to listen to something?”
“You still have a CD player? A Discman?” Hazel touched the blue-ice colored edges. “Oh, you would have been the coolest boy in high school in the early 2000s.”
“More like the coolest girl in high school.” When Hazel tilted her head, Christopher shrugged. “I used to be a girl. Long story. But now I’m just Christopher, and I work as a DJ so I often still have CDs and records.”
Hazel blinked several times. He used to be a girl? Did that mean…Oh.She understood instantly. He was trans, a trans man. She’d come across trans people a few times on the road by now, including a buff trans woman who lugged their equipment around in Des Moines.
