Chapter 19

Xia Xingcheng fell ill. While everybody thought that it was because he was drenched in water during the previous day's filming, he himself felt that perhaps it was due to the fact that he had been under too much mental pressure, which resulted in him catching a small cold. Even though it was summer, he still couldn't bear it. First he had a stuffy nose and kept sneezing and sneezing, and in the very same night, his whole body became weak and his muscles ached, and then it started to heat up.

The next day's filming was suspended, and Xia Xingcheng went down to the hospital with his assistant.

He felt extremely apologetic that his own physical reasons affected the filming's progress, and took the initiative to ask the doctor to give him an IV drip in the hopes that he would get better a little faster.

Xia Xingcheng was admitted to a separate ward in the hospital, and he lay drowsily by himself, without energy nor an appetite.

Until now, he had always felt that he was in pretty good shape, and even if he caught a cold, he'd get better right after taking two pills and sleeping it off. These kinds of severe physical symptoms had not appeared in a long time.

At noon, He Zheng and two deputy directors came to visit him.

He Zheng told him to rest peacefully and not to think about the matters of filming.

Xia Xingcheng nodded and said he understood, but still worried in his heart.

He Zheng and the directors sat down for a while but left soon after that.

Xia Xingcheng was so tired that he turned his back to his assistant who would always make noises in the room from time to time, and when he could no longer tolerate it, he drove his assistant out, wrapped himself in the quilt, and closed his eyes and fell asleep.

When he woke up, Xia Xingcheng sensed that someone was in the ward with him. He slowly opened his eyes and his gaze fell on Yang Youming's upright back leaning against the window sill, gazing back at him.

For a moment, Xia Xingcheng couldn't tell if he was dreaming.

The afternoon sunshine had shone through the window, and unlike the stage lights on set, it was real sunlight, and it portrayed Yang Youming's silhouette as something slender and finely gilt-edged.

"Awake?" Yang Youming asked him.

Xia Xingcheng raised his arm and realized that he was covered up tightly and sweating all over in the air-conditioned ward, so he pulled down the quilt, intending to sit up.

Yang Youming sensed his movements and said, "Lie down. Don't get up."

Xia Xingcheng saw a bouquet of flowers at the head of the bed which ought to have been brought by Yang Youming. The mix of golden yellow, pink and white flowers looked warm and full of vitality. He thought that it must not have been picked out by Yang Youming himself, but Li Yun who took care of it for him.

"Are you feeling better?" Yang Youming asked him.

"Much better," Xia Xingcheng replied. It was true. To say the least, he wasn't dizzy nor felt faint anymore, and he no longer wanted to go back to sleep. It was only once he opened his mouth that he felt his dry throat was feeling a bit coarse.

He sat up and tried to pour himself some water.

Yang Youming walked to the bedside table, picked up the jug and poured a cup of warm water, and handed the cup to him.

Xia Xingcheng took it and said, "Thank you." He picked up the cup and tested the temperature, then began to drink large mouthfuls of water.

Yang Youming sat down on the chair beside the bed.

Xia Xingcheng drank the water, put the cup back on the bedside table, and felt some water escape from the corner of his mouth and flow down to his jaw, so he bowed his head and raised his hand to wipe at it. He felt uneasy doing anything in front of Yang Youming.

Yang Youming didn't say a word, and leaned against the back of his seat, his eyes trained on Xia Xingcheng's face.

Xia Xingcheng said, "I'm sorry for wasting Ming ge's time." Yang Youming's time was much more precious than his.

Hearing him say this, Yang Youming smiled lightly. "What's there to waste? I don't have any other projects after this film is over."

Xia Xingcheng looked at the tip of Yang Youming's nose. It wasn't that he was unwilling to look straight into his eyes, he just unconsciously wanted to avoid them. He opened his mouth and asked a question that he had wanted to ask a long time ago: "Why haven't you been filming much in the past two years? Is it because you had to take care of your family?"

Instead of answering this question directly, Yang Youming asked, "Do you like my movies?"

Xia Xingcheng, who had been sitting at the head of the bed, immediately straightened his back and said strongly, "I really like them, I've liked them since 'Questioning the Jianghu'."

'Questioning the Jianghu' was a martial arts movie that Yang Youming starred in more than a decade ago, and he had worked with a very famous director. He was not the leading actor at the time, nor was he the most famous actor in the crew, but Xia Xingcheng felt that his role stood out the most.

How old was Xia Xingcheng at that time? He hadn't even graduated from elementary school yet.

Yang Youming looked into his eyes and smiled.

Xia Xingcheng was immediately embarrassed by his own excitement. He leaned back and explained, "I've always been your die-hard fan from the start. Originally, I wanted to come find you and ask for your autograph, but I didn't have the nerve to even open my mouth."

Yang Youming smiled and suddenly stood up. He picked up the marker on the patient's information board at the end of the bed and said to Xia Xingcheng, "Where do you want me to sign?"

Xia Xingcheng was stunned, he had only been chattering about casually to alleviate the mood, and didn't expect that Yang Youming would take him seriously. He immediately hurried to look for something that Yang Youming could write on.

It was a pity that he hadn't brought anything with him, and there was nothing on his body but a wrinkled quilt and clothes that were soaked through with sweat.

Yang Youming sat down by the bed and held out his hand. "Give me your hand."

Xia Xingcheng was slightly startled and obediently gave his hand to Yang Youming.

Yang Youming squeezed the palm of his hand and opened it up, signing his name on Xia Xingcheng's palm with the marker.

Perhaps it was because Xia Xingcheng's body temperature was slightly higher, but he felt that Yang Youming's own palm was a little cool on the back of his hand. As the marker swept across his palm, he felt unbearable ticklish, so he forcefully withdrew his hand.

Yang Youming signed his name very meticulously, holding his hand and bending his fingers closed, then gently placed it down on the hospital bed.

Xia Xingchend bowed his head and looked down at his clenched right fist.

Yang Youming stood up and returned the pen to the patient's information board at the end of the bed and said, "I'll be going now. Rest well."

Xia Xingcheng looked up, and for a split second, he felt a particular reluctance to part, but quickly realized that it was inappropriate, so he smiled and replied, "Ok, Ming ge, take care. I'll have Xiao Yang see you off."

Xiao Yang was Xia Xingcheng's assistant.

"No need," said Yang Youming. "Li Yun is waiting for me outside. Just have a good rest."

Xia Xingcheng spread open his hand and looked at the autograph on his palm, and before Yang Youming walked out of the ward, he couldn't help saying, "It's a pity that there's nothing I can do to keep it."

Yang Youming's steps came to a halt. He turned back to him, gently smiled and said, "That's all right, if it goes away, I'll sign it for you again."
