Chapter 18: Arriving in Springwater

“No,” Nick says. “I’ve never killed a human.”

“Why would they believe you’ve decided to start with me?”

“I think they’ll want to believe it. It will gratify them to imagine that I’ve given into temptation and become like them. So long as they think I have a claim on you, they’ll leave you alone.”

“Claim?”

“The Bloodfangs don’t think much of humans in general. They’ll see you as my property.”

“I really hate that.”

“Don’t think too much about it. It’s just a lie we’re telling them, so they’ll leave you alone. You’ll hate the consequences of being an unclaimed human in Springwater even more.” I stare out the car window as the main road brings us out of Whitewood, and back into the woods. “We can still go back if you want,” Nick adds. “If you’re not comfortable with it, you don’t have to enter Springwater.”
