Adrian (summer 2018)
I looked down at my shoes as they showed the reflection of the ceiling light in them. I didn't have anywhere else to look. If I looked at Dan then his anger would surely burst out of its cage (the same cage that had been unlocked by a bottle of Old Crow this morning) and if I looked anywhere else it would surely draw Dan's attention to me, ending in the same way.
I heard the chords of an old church organ (all minor) echo throughout the baren wood building. I tilted my head up a little (testing the waters). I looked to my side cautiously as I saw Dan's face (and I'm sure his mind) laying in a drunken stupor. I turn ahead facing the pastor as he steps up to a small microphone.
"We've all been gathered here today to mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Allison Angoscia. A loved wife and mother." He took a moment as his words echoed through the church. There was no one but me and Dan there. My mom had no family but me. And Dan's only living relative is his great aunt who he refers to as 'a drunken slut who died in gods eyes when she tied her tubes'
"She was a great woman. Even though I didn't know her personally she sounds like an angel of god. And If I may I would like to give my condolences to bereaved." He looked right at me but stopped after Dan fired a beam of fiery but silent rage through his eyes.
As he kept talking I kept my mouth shut and my head down. Ever since mom died Dan's been on edge. After all He didn't just loose his wife but he lost his only shot at a daughter.
