Why the sudden change?

Marianne leaves the mansion and changes from her magnificent clothe to her rags, the next day.

She wants to commence the work the day before, but she is so tired and sleeps off.

She set out after she has put a mud on her face to make her appear dirtier, and after few minutes, she gets into the tavern.

"Hello sir." She greets a man with a beard, who hold a knife as it to slaughter a ram.

"Yes. The man eyes her from head to toe, before he looks away from her.

"I'm here to work sir. I hope you can help me." She says with her head bent.

"There is no space for you. Here Is filled up." The man says and she shakes her head and fall to the ground.

"If you don't save me. I think I will die. I am the only son if my family. My mother died before I was born and my father...he...he...he ran away with a woman. I've been the breadwinner of myself. Huuuuuu-uuuuu." She cries with tears rushing down to her face, and the customers cannot help but watch her and they pity her.

"Please, David. Help this little boy. Who knows if you are the only one to help him." One of the customers says.

"Th-th-this-" The owner of the tavern is speechless and stare at her, which she stares back at him in her puppy eyes.

"You are hired." The man, said helplessly and she jumps up in tears.

From afar, a certain person cannot help but shakes his head continuously as he sip his wine.

"What a vixen and interesting person." He smiles.

Marianne smile at her new boss and the man says she should follow him.

"You are?" He asks as they enters a store.

She knows what he is talking about, but she acts like she doesn't and says another thing.

"I am Philip. Nice to meet you my boss." She says with a smile.

The man is rest assured that she doesn't know anything and he continued to bombard her with questions.

"So what do you do before?" he asks.

"I does nothing. I always looks for a job, but became I am too ugly, they never give me any job." She complains.

"If you want to join, there is something you have to do. Are you ready to do it?" He asks, his voice getting dangerous. Even though she is beginning to get scared, she acts like she doesn't sense any air of cruelty.

"Of course, I can." She says. "I am ready to do anything, as long as I survives." She says determinedly.

"Okay. You are half hired. If you are able to do your first mission successfully, you will be here till you wish to leave yourself." The man says and she screams happily. "You can leave. Go and meet John in the kitchen." The man says thinking she is as naive as she portray herself to be.

After she goes out does she finally relieves and release the breathe she never think she's holding.

What type of business is he doing? Why would he be into a mission before she is accepted? She is ready to face whatever thrown at her, even though she is going to get harmed at the end - well not much.

She gets into the kitchen and she is so delighted to see him again.

"John." She calls and he looks at her with a smile. He is cooking, his back facing her.

"Wow! You are finally accepted. What did you use for my boss to accept you sooner?" He jokingly asks, still with his back turned at her.

"I don't know. But I know I'm happy I am accepted." She says and she smile.

He is so nice here, why the sudden change about him, few months later?
