“Why does it matter if you know or not?”
Helen sighed. “Nate, I think of you as my own family. I always welcome you at my house and I’ve known you for five years or more.”
“It doesn’t mean I have to tell you everything, right?”
Helen paused. “No, it doesn’t,” she said softly.
“So why are we talking about me?” Nate rushed in. “It’s Lucian who’s more important here. We should find him or—”
“Or what? What really happened?”
Nate thought of how broken Lucian had been earlier. He was afraid Lucian would do something bad, especially after he talked with his grandmother.
“I think you already know that.”
Comprehension flashed across Helen’s face.
“He talked to you about Payton?”
“Yes.”
She exhaled a big gulp of oxygen. “I can’t believe it. Lucian’s not the type to open up to someone, let alone someone he barely knows.”
Nate nodded his agreement. “Neither can I. He also told me he had a dream but didn’t have another nightmare the last time he slept after we had talked.”
