Horrible Things Have To Be Done
Mason explained to Ilona that he had snuck out in the night to find her on his own against her brothers' wishes. Normally, Ilona might have been unhappy with him for being so reckless, but she admitted she had done nearly the same thing in her hunt for revenge.
"It looks like we're both going to be in trouble," Mason smirked.
Even though the pair desperately wanted to get back to the safety of their cave, they decided it would be best to go find Ilona's mother and Sam Thatch first. Her brothers were with the other survivors, but Anja and Sam were on their own. If they ran into one of the groups Vane had sent out to hunt them, they would be outnumbered.
"What about him?" Ilona asked Mason quietly, looking across the clearing at the body on the ground.
Mason looked at it too and took a deep breath. "We'll leave him," he sighed. "If we're lucky, maybe something will eat him."
"Mason!" Ilona looked at him in shock.
