Chapter 41: The Letter

Edith paused, her hand still on the letter in her purse. Caden was still talking on the phone, so Edith carefully unfolded the letter.

“I figured you would find this letter when the time was right,” Her father had written under her name.

Edith was overwhelmed with a flood of emotions, her hands shaking slightly as she read her father’s last message to her.

Yet, his letter made her blood run cold.

Her father began by reminding Edith she was a smart girl, was a wonderful horsewoman, and always made him proud. Liam Doyle went on to explain his distance from her during his time at the cottage and his illness.

“I refrained from contacting you these past few years because I needed to protect you. You are my greatest gift, my dearest treasure, and I would not let those who would want to hurt you get close to you.”

Confusion tempered the grief building in Edith’s heart, holding back the tears that threatened to spill from the young woman’s eyes, so she tried to read quickly.
