Cultivation was a long process, and it wasn't entirely without reason that children were removed from their homes and parents and told to cut off their past when they started cultivating. It was in part a tradition and also in part a way to protect them from hurting themselves and being distracted while cultivating.
Of course, the Academy could be considered one of the few exceptions. Although there were still rather stringent rules about attendance that prevented one from being able to go home whenever the Academy's cultivation system was robust and systematic, and it allowed talents to achieve small success in a matter of years as opposed to decades. With such a system, there were more chances for students to return home and explore what they wanted.
