My family has a habit of showing up at random times. My parents had family dinners to help us stay connected to our grandparents. Owen arrived with Wendy, then Aunt Jesse and Uncle Kaxon arrived.

Okay, let me explain about Kaxon. He’s not only my uncle but my cousin. It’s the same situation with Deacon and Patton. Our family likes to make life more convoluted than it should be. Grandpa and Uncle Maverick are brothers, married to sisters. What the hell?

I sat at the table, creating a family tree in my head.

/"Why do you look like your head will explode?/" Dad asked me.

/"Because we have a complicated family tree. Can I call Kaxon uncle cousin?/"

Kaxon cocked his head and squinted his eyes as Dad gave me an unamused look. Owen laughed.

/"Our family is strange,/" Grandpa JJ told Grandma Lydia.

/"It’s not any stranger than your family./"

/"How about we keep it simple?/" Nana asked.
