Prologue

Katsuke knows two truths. One, his parents had forgotten he existed. Quite literally. Two, his life was complicated.

Today was a good day. Father was home again, enjoying a nice home-cooked meal. He was a busy man who had no time for family. This could be forgiven because he had one of the best smiles, among other things. It made you feel like you won the lottery. "Mother" was always happy when one was directed at her. Sister looked proud, as if a great honor had been bestowed on her. Katsuke wondered how he would feel if he ever smiled at him with that much love.

The whole house was lit up, contrasting beautifully against the dark night. He stood from his hiding place, careful not to disturb the leaves on the bough of the tree, and leapt silently away, leaving the pretty scene behind him.
