What is it to be a monster? What is it to be human? Is it not possible to be both, or neither at all? Malik finds himself awakened. Full of jumbled memories that don’t quite fit. In a body that he does not recognize. While he also finds himself next to someone that he can only call a goddess, he begins to learn. Guided by kind hands. That’s besides the gods. Their hidden battle goes unspoken but to their closest followers. The followers who are told that a great danger approaches. One that’s hunting for the vessel that was lost. Should he ally with these other god's vessels? Should he even fight the cultists after his body? This brings Malik to a choice. Accept the monstrous body he now resides in and grow stronger. Reject that body and lose his mind. Or completely give in and allow for his fate to be sealed along with his soul decimated by the eldritch god of the unknown. will he make this body his and everything that comes with it?

"I can tell it's something interesting you chose to take on. You know if you fail you lose that chance, but you can follow a different path." While Jen was surely saying this since many people struggled with the tougher classes they chose to pursue, she didn't really understand.

"There's no other option. I am human, I will take this class no matter what." A spark of coldness made Jen feel she was looking at a predator. No, an abyss. No, the boy who had just casted his elf fighting for hours within a dungeon that she expected to take a week in dungeon time.

"Like I said… fine, what do you need to do."

"Research on the fallen feathers dungeon."

Jen's eyes grew wide. This wasn't just a small dungeon. This was a dungeon known for making many people lose themselves entirely. A maze that couldn't be mapped. That aside, the humanoid monsters there were madness incarnate. Nothing good even came from the dungeon either.

"Access to that is nearly impossible right now. You should choose a different class-"

"I need this one. If you won't help me with it, I will get the guild master. I'll ask Ellen. I will ask anyone for help. As long as I get this class I can be me." Malik stood up and began walking away. He was making a direct line for the exit.

This wasn't what Jen had thought Malik would be like at all. His anger and focus were more than what they had been a few moments ago. He wasn't showing any of the awe and amazement that everyone else always had when it came to classes.

Beyond that, this was just like the time he had broken down after gaining his memories. The next time he had woken up, he had been driven and filled with rage. But now, that rage held more fear in it too. A cold and dark fear.

If she pursued this though… What would happen? Would he detach himself even more? Would he be able to keep his focus on his goals? Or would he crumble?

As Malik made his way outside the dungeon, a few guards offered to purchase the materials he had gained, but when he kept walking they just returned to their business. They recognized when a dungeon endeavor did not go well. The young adventurers needed time to accept that.

When Malik made it back to the guild, he changed clothing and showered just to turn back around. He knew that he could go to the academy library at any time. Especially the library. So, with his time before class, he would be going there to look for information. Then he would go to his elite class. He could ask the headmaster about the dungeon.

When Malik had left the guild, Clara had seen him, but she hadn't been fast enough to catch him. She could tell though, he didn't look happy at all. The stress around him was radiating.

The entire walk to the academy grounds proved to be silent. That was how the night streets were though. If anyone was out, they would normally be up to no good. Not that any guards bothered Malik. They didn't see a reason to.

The academy grounds were a little more populated. So students only had night classes. It made sense that some skills were better to train in the night. Especially stealth or dark mana related skills. There were also those who had a race that meshed better with the night. Demi-humans with the traits of bats or other nocturnal monsters were living proof of this.

They didn't pay Malik any attention either though. He went straight for the library and to the section of dungeon information. Anything else he could research was completely lost. He had to fully focus on this single task.

Yet, as he went through the alphabetical shelves, he had no luck finding the records for the fallen feather dungeon.

"Where is the record for the fallen feather dungeon? It's not in the shelf labeled F in the dungeon journal section." Checking with Ken do the library record keepers, Malik watched as the woman shuffled through a set of cards.

While having a record keeper class was very valuable to the academy or the city as a whole, it was a large job. Many things needed to be documented and memorizing them could be a large trial within itself.

"That's a restricted journal due to the danger level of the dungeon. It requires professor approval to take out the two volume journal. Do you have approval?"

Malik clicked his tongue in frustration. He came all the way here to be blocked. It felt like everyone was trying to stop him from accomplishing what he had to do. What he NEEDED to do.

"I'll have it soon." Malik thought of two professors that might help him without much question. Today, he would see one of them.

As much as he wanted to see if the headmaster would hand him the information, he had a feeling it would t go that easily. Just the atmosphere around the headmaster made it feel like he enjoyed testing students to win rewards.

That didn't mean Malik couldn't ask him to see what he could learn. That's what the elite class was for. The more complicated questions related to their education.

This left Malik to meditate on earth mana while he waited in the classroom for the other sod the elite class.

As he grasped an understanding of earth mana deeper than before, Malik also sensed that his internal mana was fluctuating. The earth mana naturally drawn inside his body was toughening skin.

From what He could sense, this was the growth in earth mana resistance. A tougher skin and bones that could rival the heavier weight that came with earth mana overall. But what he also sensed, was that he could wield more earth man.

While Malik had yet to try meshing earth mana with any skills or manipulating it much, he felt he could do so much more easily. Because he had the resistance, that meant that instinctually his body could handle more of it. His earth mana manipulation just had to direct it, even if it was a lower level.

With his eyes closed in a meditative state, Malik pulled at the earth. Slowly, dust and small bits of earth began to form up. Started to take the shape of the dagger he had lost. This was his first thought when he had seen the clay men.

They made their bodies of earth and water, so why could he not make another dagger from earth or stone? He just lacked the understanding to do it before. He also had the experience of losing a weapon because it could not handle how he forced elemental manas in to it. Therefore, if he made weapons from earth using earth mana, wouldn't he be able to make one time use weapons over and over?

The idea was not new, other mages did similar things when they had dual elemental mana affinities. But right now, Malik had not noticed that the others had arrived and he was the center of the class.

By the time that he did, he found that everyone, including the headmaster was watching carefully. They witnessed him made a dagger out of earth and condense it enough that the dagger was just as sharp as a stone dagger but lacking a little density due to the experimental use of the skill.

"That is how one is able to manipulate earth mana well enough to create shapes and forms that they are in need of. While not practical in every situation, you just witnessed something that many learning manas would struggle with. I recommend that all for you, even if you do not use magic, meditate to focus on your own internal mana control like that."

The headmaster did not hesitate to use what they had seen and make it a lesson. Naturally, it became a discussion topic allowing Malik the chance to ask what he had originally wished to ask. Ignoring the fact that he had just shown off his meditation and skill usage there.

"Headmaster, I am interested in the falling feather dungeon. Can you share anything about it with me?" This caught the headmaster off kilter a bit. Especially since this wasn't an average dungeon for someone to be interested in.

"It's an odd dungeon without much value. If you are asking about it instead of listening to the questions your classmates have about earth mana manipulation, then you must have a good reason. How about you tell me a little about why, and then I might decide on whether or not to answer." This was what Malik thought would happen. Someone that could stop him from accomplishing his goal right now.

could go well, could be another wall to climb
