Chapter eight: First time flying

My fingers curled into each other, a nervous expression appeared on my face. This is my first time flying and I have yet to solve the mystery how an object thrown in the air falls down but somehow a plane as big as a house holds up in the air.

The young woman was dressed like an air hostess waited for my reply patiently but I was busy trying not to throw my guts out from anxiety as the jet began to make its way through the run way.

I wondered who the pilot is? What is his qualifications? How many times has he flown? Has he had any emergencies.

I closed my eyes tightly as the jet began to ascend. "Please don't crash," I cried in panic in my mind. My heart was beating fast in my chest, and I could feel a bit of sweat on my forehead.

"Are you okay?"

The soft polite enquiry came from the young woman and when I opened my eyes she was peering down at me with concern in her grey eyes. Her question also drew the attention of the woman to me.

"Are you scared of flying?"

I expected her tone to be mocking, but she actually expressed concern in her words which was a surprise seeing that since I met her the woman have acted like a robot without feelings.

The woman across from me was a strong and capable woman, and the last thing I want to do is seem weak to her.

"I am fine," I said through a pinched lip. My fist grew tighter as the jet wobbled.

The plane has ascended and was stable in the air, yet the anxiety gripping my insides like tiny threads has yet to relax its hold, and the hostess was still waiting for an answer.

"Get her something strong it will help calm her nerves," the woman commanded.

"Yes, ma," the hostess said politely and walked off.

"I said I was fine," I directed bravely at the woman still clenching my eyes close.

How do people survive plane rides. I am a second from passing out.

"You don't look it. You look like you are about to throw up everything in your got and that couch you are sitting on is the finest leather money can buy, so I do not want you messing it up with your vomit," she said in a matter of fact voice.

Her words made me throw her a quick look of disbelief before shutting it again.

She was currently browsing through her laptop and clicking her fingers rapidly across the buttons with an intense expression on her face like she was working.

I rolled my eyes behind my eye lids in reaction to her words. Here I was thinking there is something human about her when she showed her concern and she was more worried about her couch.

Figures, I sneered in my mind think the woman to be the coldest human being I have ever met.

"Here is your drink," the hostess interrupted my thoughts. She had a small tray with a tall glass of wine containing a red sparkling liquid inside.

"Thank you," I said taking the glass from her. I took a sip wondering at the name of the drink. It tasted good.

Before I knew it I was taking a larger gulp. It is so good. Sweet, and slightly ammonia.

The brunette turned to face my new employer.

"Do you want anything, ma?"

"Nothing for me," she answered curtly without lifting her head from the laptop on her laps.

The young woman nodded her head and turned around to leave. I asked for more glasses of whatever she served as she was walking away.

Alone with my thoughts I decided to occupy myself with my phones. I went on instagram and started watching videos. Mostly fashion tips and make up videos.

It didn't take long for me to get bored and looking for something else to occupy my mind.

My thoughts zeroed in on the woman across from me. I stole a glance in her direction. She was still hard at work, and her concentration just as intense as the last time I looked at her.

What is she working on? Strategies on how to take over the world? I wouldn't put it past the woman.

"Yes?"

"Excuse me!"

"You are staring."

Oh. I blushed and looked ahead. I felt embarrassed to have been caught gawking.

"I see you are a lot calmer."

Her causal observation made me realized that I was no longer scared. The wine was good, and really helped to calm my nerves.

"Thank you," I said politely.

"You are welcome. Most people experience anxiety when they fly for the first time."

I turned to look at her sharply. "How did you know this is my first time flying."

"You mean other than you trying to shit your pants at take off," she teased raising her eyes to look at me, a teasing glint in their blue pool.

My face burned hard with embarrassment even as my lips opened to deny her accusation. "I did not."

She peered at me hard through her long lashes, making me give up. "Alright, you are right. I was pretty terrified. But you have to wonder how the hell planes stays up here in the sky. I mean it is not like they are birds."

The woman's lips curved slightly into a smile. "I believe the gas helium is responsible."

"What?" I looked at her confused. Hel...What. Don't think I have ever heard of the word.

The woman peered at me with amusement. Then shook her head softly at me like I was a clown. "Never mind dear."

Her voice was slightly dismissive which was a bit insulting, but then again I have no reason to be upset. I am a school drop out, and of course it will always show during intelligent conversations like this.

And for the first time I felt ashamed and embarrassed about lack of education. I didn't pester again and tried to occupy myself again.

I opened the window and my breathe caught in my throat at the amazing view outside. The sky was so blue that it reminded me of the woman across from me, but I quickly pushed her thought away from my mind.

I continued to stare out of the window fascinated by the clouds and how they seemed to look like they were moving.

I thought about what laid above the cloud. Was it heaven?

Most Christians believes that God exist in the sky. And I have always wondered how far up in the sky do one need to travel to get to where God lives cause I would love to meet the big man and ask what the fuck is going on, and why the world is so messed up if he is as powerful as they claim.

I am not a believer myself, even though I was raised as a catholic. Watching my parents quarrel every day, my dad hitting my mother in fits of anger, and their narrow mindedness cured me of my religious sickness.

While staring out the window I started to feel sleepy and before I knew it I dozed off.

When next I woke it was to someone shaking my shoulders trying to get me up.

I groaned before opening my eyes slowly. And there she was leaning over me, her face so close that I could feel her breath on my face.

Whenever I am in that moment between waking up and being fully awake I am usually incoherent and tends to blurt out the first thing that comes to my mind.

"You are so beautiful, I slurred like I was drunk. Anyone ever tell you that. I scoffed at my own words. Of course you hear that all the time. I just wonder why a woman as beautiful as you is so cold. It will be amazing if you could smile."

At the end of my half awake sleep the woman stared at me. Her stare felt like laser rays burning through my skin rendering me breathless and incapable of any thoughts.

All I could do was drown in those piercing intense blue eyes.

Without speaking the woman leaned down and kissed me.

Shit!
