Chapter 11

They drove in silence, but every time Jason looked over at Howard, he had a big smile on his face. It wasn’t the look he was still waiting for, but it was a wonderful view nonetheless.

When they reached Howard’s exit, he looked over at Jason and asked, “Where exactly are we going?”

“The park by the house,” Jason answered, starting to get a big smile on his own face.

“They don’t rent kayaks, do they?” Howard asked.

“Um,” Jason mumbled and shrugged his shoulders, working to be noncommittal.

“You don’t have to pay to get in,” Howard said. “I have the yearly membership. They make you put it in the car door.”

Jason pulled the car up and opened the car to flash the man at the ranger station a view of the sticker. The man waved them in and Jason drove toward the water. He pulled up near a dock where several boats were parked. About twenty feet away were racks that held kayaks and canoes.
